      Being on naturals for 6 years, I have finally decided to lock it after giving it a thought for years,
      Before naturals, I was on low cut for some years,prior to that I made my hair for some years,after years of low cut.
      I live in lagos Nigeria and I am looking for a good natural hair loctician who I can afford and who is close to my residence.

    I would love to see a video from you about the relationship between black women and extensions/European hairstyles. I also never thought about the consumerism in the natural hair community and how it could be impacting the environment so thanks for bringing that up; I hope no one attacks you for that 😂 I’m about 4.5 months loc’d and loving it more and more every day 💕

    • @Ifeyinwa
      @Ifeyinwa  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Haha I’m putting my notes together for that video! I know that will be a sensitive topic for sure. And I’m sure I’ll get some pushback for the consumerism comment but I’m happy to have a conversation with anyone that disagrees with me. It’s definitely not an attack on natural hair but more a criticism on how it’s been hijacked by companies trying to sell us all these products to make our hair more “manageable”… welcome to the loc’d life it’s honestly the best hair decision I’ve ever made.

      It’s the colonization of our hair: texturism, lengthism, all the isms!! Basically mainstream culture telling us to self-hate how uniquely we were made.

  • @beingmichelleg
    @beingmichelleg ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I was on the fence for the longest time over "how" to start my locs. I got frustrated and went to the store to get some hair to braid up for a few months to postpone decision and had a visceral response trying to buy hair. I walked out of store knowing I was going to start my own (I stated with 280 - combined to 180 and took them down 8 months in because I didn't like how large they were). Those few months after the take down and this last set were final frustrating sign that I was ready for loc life and not interested in returning to all the "rules" of dealing with my natural hair. I used to spend hours doing my hair only for it to puff out as soon as I went outside or attended an event. I may spend hours doing reties but at the end of the day they are still there.
    My current set is 345 and outside of self reties days I have zero regrets. I've tossed all the supplies I had and no interest in wearing a wig or putting braids over this beautiful head. The upfront cost/time for installing is nothing compared to the time and memories lost always having to plan around my hair.
    You may get push back regarding the consumerism tied with natural hair but its real and those caught in the matrix will not recognize themselves. I rather spend that money and time enjoying life.

Sometimes the journey can be complex but it only makes us more grateful for the destination when we eventually get there! I’m so happy you’ve found hair peace now! And it’s so interesting how people are picking up on the consumerism comment, I thought I’d get more pushback on the cost savings breakdown lol 😊

    I’m three months in. I’ve always been a do it yourselfer especially with my hair. I was team creamy crack for years and kept it cut (by myself) into a pixie style. Last year I went bald and kept it like that until i decided to start letting it grow back and not use any more relaxer. It took so many products to use and finger coiling and two strand twists. It was such an investment in time and money. I’m very happy with this loc journey so far. Getting up in the mornings already looking like I’m ready to face the day is priceless! At 60 I will tell you ain’t nobody got time for that! LOL.

    Thank you so much for sharing your microlocks experience. And they are absolutely gorgeous. I'll admit, I'm hesitant to spend that kind of money consistently because I rarely go to a salon now and don't buy wigs or get my hair braided. So it would represent a significant increase in spending for me and a lot more time in a salon. However, hair freedom and the retaining of length are two HUGE draws for me. I watched both your pros and cons. Some of the most honest and most helpful info on microlocks I've seen thus far. Thanks!

    Lovely video. I had semi freeform (traditional) locs for 11 years, nice big fat gorgeous locs, I loved them.
    I now have microlocs....I can agree with you wholeheartedly on all your points (of course semi-freeform locs are easier to maintain, but the trade off on versatility with microlocs balances it out)
    I installed and maintain my microlocs, so cost is the same for me too, 😊

    I am convinced our curly kinky natural hair was designed by God to be in a loc state. Definately not chemically straightened which literally breaks the bonds of the hair, depletes it of crucial protein - damaged. And our hair is so wonderful that water and butters, braid it up is enough to stretch it, for variety, no heat needed.

    Can you take down microlocs after a long time and just return to the way your hair should be?

    And those estimations are not that accurate here in the states either unfortunately. I know of people who spend about $1,200-$1,800 a year on these hairstyles and inflation isn’t helping!! I will definitely be getting microlocs soon thanks for this amazing video!

    Does the loca get dry with no oil? My hair now with no locks gets dry and I feel the need to always dose it with oil

    Hair enjoyed the contents. If you don't mind can you show the price in American dollars. Pounds ($) I don't get.

    • @zakiya1635
      @zakiya1635 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @maryjaneguyton Pounds and dollars exchange at about a 1 to 1 ratio now, so, what she stated should be close in dollars. However, you might have to recalculate the prices of wigs, hair products and such as from the prices she was giving in pounds, its a little difference in dollars. It looks like wigs are a little cheaper, imo, in the US and shampoo, etc might cost a bit more. Hope you found this helpful.

    For consumerism, I think it’s the same with skincare products. But being a cosmetic manufacturer like you, these different products are created in response to peoples needs. So yeah there are tons of beauty products but the I won’t blame manufacturers, rather people need to be more conservative and understand what they actually need and get just that. That way there can be waste reduction cause how much product junkies finish all the products in their stash

    • @graceoriaghan
      @graceoriaghan ปีที่แล้ว

      *how many product junkies

      Of course consumerism is an issue iin any capitalistic society and I agree that it is the responsibility of the consumer to purchase consciously, but this isn't the same point I was trying to make. The natural hair movement started as a movement towards self acceptance for black women. If you transitioned at the beginning of this movement's popularity it was glaringly obvious how quickly this movement became hijacked by companies looking to exploit it. All of a sudden we were being pedalled 12-step regimens and products that don't exist in any other community, all marketed to make our hair more "manageable" (aka change it) which completely goes against what the movement set out to do in the first place. Perhaps I didn't convey my thoughts clearly enough but it's something I'm hoping to explore in a future video in more detail.

      Got you now. Very true. To think that most products for the kinky hair community are owned by white men is beyond me

    I want to do it so badly 😩 I don’t look good with short hair though so I am trying to grow my hair out a bit so that I can have more length because I know that they shrink after install. I have seen loc extensions but I don’t want someone else’s hair attached just to have some length
