Fix the CRUX35 HD’s biggest problem // The Great Discus - Sub250g DJI FPV Build

  • The CRUX35 HD was my favourite sub250g freestyle bind and fly... but there was one major issue with it... and that's its durability when running a dji Vista/ Runcam link. This simple upgrade solves that and even a beginner with no build experience can do it.
    In my previous review of the Crux35 I said that it was great but I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner because it wouldn’t survive many crashes… with this upgrade I can confirm that it’s probably a better option as a first quad than say the DJI Avata 2.
    Parts you’ll need:
    A happymodel CRUX35 HD (This is the Vista version in the video so HD zero versions may need different parts). - www.getfpv.com/happymodel-cru...
    The Great Discus Frame (in this video I used the 3mm bottom plate, button head screws and 25mm standoffs) - www.cncdrones.com/the-great-d...
    M2 x 14mm hex screws (you'll need 4 of these)
    180mm Battery strap (I'm using an 850/900 mah 4s battery this BetaFPV strap isn't necessary but it's what I had available at the time of the build) - betafpv.com/collections/anten...
    Battery pad - I recommend Ummagrip which is available in most places - ummagawd.com/products/ummagri...
    Alternative battery pad - Flywoo also do a sticky pad (although doesn't last as long) - flywoo.net/products/2pcs-flyw...
    3D Prints
    Flywoo Firefly camera adapter
    drive.google.com/file/d/1XO48...
    AIO to DJI vista adapter - www.thingiverse.com/thing:455...
    DJI vista/ ELRS antenna mount (will also work on a crossfire mini mortal)
    www.thingiverse.com/thing:655...
    4x Arm/motor guards (Booties) - www.thingiverse.com/thing:623...
    4x M2 4mm stack spacer (recommended for isolation but you can also build without these using the original nuts from the CRUX35 - www.thingiverse.com/thing:390...
    4x M2 TPU nut (not needed if you're using the original CRUX35 nuts or have the larger M2 nuts that I used in the video) - www.printables.com/model/4688...
    The Great Discus works with the standard CRUX35 settings, but if you want to tune the quad ‪@TorontoFPV‬ has provided his tune for the quad here • FPV Drone PIDS & Tune ...
    If you're using a CRUX35 with analog or HD zero or doing a build with this frame from scratch take a look at ‪@TorontoFPV‬ he has a ton of videos of different builds (even an O3) with this frame and is so responsive to any questions on your builds.

    Re-uploaded with the sound fixed (hopefully).
    As a correction to what I said in the video - @TorontoFPV just mentioned there is a 20x20 mounting in the top plate hidden in the design, which makes this build EVEN easier... so that 20x20 3D printed adapter and additional screws shouldn't be necessary.

      Yes the audio is much better in this one. I was going to say something but I didn't want to hurt your feelings and all you have to do is pin my comment and everyone will see that or you can pin your own whatever you wish. 😜

    Thanks buddy, glad your enjoying it! There is a 20 x 20 mount on the top plate hidden in the inner holes So you can mount the vista to it! If you go naked you can go from 25mm standoffs to 18 :) Also if you ever want to try something different build one as a pusher and toilet tanked on top. I'd say do that to your baby hawk and you'll be blown away. I've done 2 now and it's a whole different flying experience plus O3 with no props! See you around!

      I'm pretty sure I looked at that top plate when I was trying to figure out how to mount it and thought... nah it's not quite lined up... and now I'm looking at it with the vista attached... it lines up perfectly haha!

      @@GarethDix lol Yes it does I designed a 20 x 20 in there for vtx. With O3 or vista you can set it up int a way that if you had a spare ready with everything but the unit you can make a quick swap and keep going but since the bumpers it's been ultra solid. If you run a naked Gopro I'll send you my discus designed one It's 36grams :)

    I bought 2 Crux35s and we've broken both frames in 50 flights. Definitely going to order some Discus frames. Good to see you so satisfied with the build. It's a great little quad with a fragile frame.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s the thing about the crux35, everytime I crashed I panicked it had broken… after over a month of crashing the discus frame I’m pretty confident that it’s not going to break anytime soon! Let me know how you get on with it

    • @Kevin.L_
      @Kevin.L_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GarethDix I see you used the 3mm bottom plate. I was thinking of going thicker. Do you think you would go with the 3mm again? I've still got a few Crux frames to break but I plan on ordering Discus frames soon.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I took the 3mm as it's the recommended size from Toronto FPV (as it saves weight). Given the weight of the quad it probably doesn't need more than 3mm... and it flies very much like a CRUX35. but there is part of me that wants to see what the 4mm is like! I think if you fly bandos it might be worth going thicker, but the 3mm seems to be holding up really well so far...

    • @Kevin.L_
      @Kevin.L_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GarethDix Thanks. I broke the Crux so quickly I'm thinking 4mm may be worth the penalty. I'm still analog so I think I can tolerate another 8g or whatever it is.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Kevin.L_ if you're flying analog you have loads of weight to play around with, so 4mm and together with the shorter standoffs it would be like a mini tank

    The Crux35 is also my favourite sub250g freestyle bind and fly. I have broken 2 arms so far. I bought the grinderino frame and when I brake something the next time, I switch all parts to the grinderino. It's heavier but very durable, I'm wondering how it will perform or if it even works! I see you did a grinderino build yourself, are you happy with it?
    Grüessli us Lozärn

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do love the Grinderino it not only looks amazing but it’s soooo versatile you can pretty much fit anything in it. That said I hope you have one of the newer frames with arms that has the 9x9 and 12x12 mounting for the motors on the arms or the 1404 motors from the Crux35 won’t fit. But if not let me know I have some spare arms.
      It would be interesting to see how the crux35 internals work with the Grinderino frame as it’s much heavier so it may fly very differently… but if you do it an upload a video let me know!

    Are the Arm guards in this video called Arm Booties? For the Discus frame, cause in the 3D Description they look like they are bigger an also cover the motors? Am looking for just Arm bumpers that just pop on? 🙏

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These are the booties… they go between the motor and the frame and are bolted on. They do cover the motors which is great for added protection. But I wouldn’t go bigger than maybe a 1404. So far I haven’t broken a motor or arms using them so they’re done really well.
      But if you want arm bumpers that just slide on you could ask TorontoFPV to design some as he’s pretty accommodating to requests!

    Hi, I downloaded the 3D files for the Camera Mount on Discus / Crux35 ,it works for the HD Crux35 in your Video, I have the Analog version with the Caddx Ant Will the 3D camera mount sill work for Caddx Ant? 🙏

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That camera mount I use should work for any camera as it just angles in more for a smaller camera like the ant… however given its smaller than the runcam wasp I would look at some of the mounts Toronto FPV has made for analog cameras on the frame as they protect the lens much better as it sits within the standoffs
