When you are checking for the skimmer, don't do it with subtlety in the fear of being weird, do it crazily so you don't get confused for the culprit if someone else puts a skimmer there later on.

Yeah I actually seen one of these, they were in a hardware store, I immediately said I’m not paying for these things and immediately ripped the thing off the machine and I put it on the counter and they accused me of breaking it until they seen I didn’t break it.

I recommend getting a credit card with an EMV Chip, which counters skimmers because it ensures every transaction is unique and differently encrypted every time.
In the UK and Italy you only get these on ATM machines now and it's VERY VERY rare because of the nature of how the pads work, they have to be installed basically in graveyard shift times and the bank will check them before opening and closing and at intervals during the day. Pin guards like these are also less common on card readers here, you'd struggle to install one of these without making it very obvious.

That is their job.
They prob already got criminal history and long periods of unemployment so no one going to hire them over a good young honest lad. Their kids will be crooks too. That's the cycle of crime.
They can't get a job actually, they have to resorts to scams and petty thefts for livelihoods. I don't condone crime and theft, but if their local jurisdiction doesn't provide a solution for them or reintegrate them in society, they have this last resort. It's sad that a simple mistake compromises the rest of their lives.
