I totally agree with you. I think chemical sunscreens, when formulated effectively, can provide a more robust broad spectrum protection of both UVB and UVA (especially UVA). I’ve always admired zinc oxide because it provides more stable UVA protection in comparison to avobenzone (the US’s sole UVA filter approved by the FDA), however with brands such as La Roche Posay and Neutrogena they’ve managed to actually stabilize their avobenzone. I think a video of you elaborating a little more on this topic would be so interesting.

If your skin burns in addition to flaring up your rosacea when you use organic filters it may be worth checking out if you are allergic. It turned out that the burning and flaring for me was because I am allergic to several organic filters. I also learned that these filters may be used in other skincare products, not for their uv protection of our skin, but to stabilize other photosensitivit ingredients in the products. Turned out some creams I thought was giving me flare ups where actually giving me allergic reactions. It may of course be different for you, but it is nice to have allergies ruled out at the very least.

There's Dr V but she's questionable at the best of times so not many people pay her much mind. I think a lot of the time people aren't great at evaluating sources and relevant experts - for example, the AAD website unfortunately has the "physical sunscreens reflect and scatter" myth all over it and people assume they're correct, even though the way that UV interacts with metal oxides has nothing to do with dermatology (it's physical chemistry, and physical chemists have been saying that metal oxides absorb UV since day 1).

I love skincare and sunscreens. Im both a dermatologist and pharmacist but I defer to the knowledge of scientists and experts like Michelle (people who actually understand these things at a fundamental level).
An annoying part about the culture we have now in dermatology, especially aesthetic focused dermatology, is this thought that we are the final experts on skincare and cosmetics. That isn't true because that's not what dermatology is. My dermatology training was on diagnosing and treating disease, not chemistry.

But this double whammy approach was pretty effective because I only have sun spots in one small line on the side where I had most exposure cause I had to stand in one spot often as the instructor. Thank god I came back to the affordable chemical one.

Mainly, I’ve kept skin cancer away, and that was the main goal for me. The side effects of taking care has been that I have very fair, smooth textured skin (but it’s always been oily, so I’ve had to take extra care..cleanse/tone/exfoliate/moisturize to slow down the oil) No freckles on my face or throat. Some dark freckles on left “drivers” arm (I don’t sunblock my arms under long sleeved shirts) Some creasing under/around eyes, some horizontal throat creasing lol, so I’m not freakishly baby faced anymore, but I’d say a lifetime of sunblock has kept me intact. I gotta use mineral sunscreen exclusively. I've tried so many chemical sunscreens and they always burn the hell outta my eyes. Even keeping them far away from my eyes (maybe from sweating) so I always just dealt with the white cast giving me that casket ready realness look/ gray cast on my non white Latina skin. La Roche Posay's tinted mineral sunscreen has been a godsend. Liquidy, light, goes on smooth, dries down great as well as matte, layers under my power foundation great. The tint is perfect because I don't need it to really match my skin so much as not make me look like I'm cosplaying Morticia Addams. While pricey for the amount I love it and just use it for when I go out. If I'm hanging out at the pool or not really going anywhere important or don't need to look particularly presentable, I still just throw the regular La Roche Posay Anthelios Mineral sunscreen on and go about my vampire lookin' ass day.

In Canada, the La Roche Posay tinted mineral sunscreen version only has titanium dioxide, not zinc oxide, so I don't think the coverage is good enough so I never bought it.
I have problem with burning eyes with chemical sunscreens too, so I often used physical sunscreen around my eyes, and the rest of face with chemical sunscreens for better texture.
Recently I am using the Korean Isntree hyaluronic watery sun gel, and it is the only chemical sunscreen that did not burn my eyes so far, so quite happy with it, and it was also tested and confirmed correct SPF 50+ and PA++++ as on the label.

The chemical sunscreens here in Europe are fantastic and light with great filters so that's what I love. Garnier sensitive uv SPF50 is my current favourite.
What do you think of the new sunscreen filter TriAsorB? Avène Intense Protect 50+ has it and I'm buying it when my Garnier sensitive uv runs out.

I have dark skin and hyperpigmentation from acne marks. I use Altruist Brand, but I would like a full review of this sunscreens from this brand. I really like it and want to keep using it but would like some good science review. Altruist band used tinosorb.

as a brown girl with melasma and hyperpigmentation I’ve been told time and time again that I should only be using tinted or physical sunscreens for my concerns, leading to regretful purchases of chalky and pasty sunscreens that I hated using for months. your knowledge has guided me to the light however, lol, and this video is truly the one that will help me forevermore with my sunscreen choices. thank you, once again, for your myth busting and sunscreen wisdom, michelle 🤍

So can you tell ms If the ingredients in chemical sunscreen as a brown girl protected and prevent your melasma and hyperpigmentation than physical?? Because qs brown we tend to get educated from even youtube dermatologist ( brown ones) to uae physical or prefer physical because of our skin tone 2e get hyperpigment easily.. Im kinda concerned of using Chemical ( skin Aqua used to be bomb but it recently failed FDA test) so looking for the other

    • @moonlitskyes
      @moonlitskyes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@umaimasiddiqui7376 ?? this video illustrates exactly why physical sunscreens aren’t better than chemical in terms of sun protection, which is the most important factor for not worsening or agitating hyperpigmentation and melasma, especially relevant for brown and black skin. chemical sunscreens do tend to irritate the skin a bit more so a combination sunscreen (with both chemical and physical filters) will probably be the best option for the least irritation possible with the best protection. elta md’s uv sport is my holy grail.

Also, Invisible Fluid is the most aesthetic sunscreen I've ever used. I put it on, and then I'm like, "Wait, did I really put it on?" It's a liquid, I use three finger lengths on my face, half a finger on my ears, and two fingers on my neck and chest. I put it everywhere, including in my ears, on my eyelids and right up to my lower lashes. It does NOT migrate. I have to work fast. It sinks right in.

I find it so odd that people thought sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium oxide acts immediately. I use sunscreens with those ingredients and it still says on the bottle to wait 15 minutes. It’s so crazy how these myths come out of thin air. Growing up my family used chemical sunscreen but I always got burnt by the sun even if I reapplied every hour. I have very fair skin and take medicine that makes me more susceptible to sunburn. However, since using sunscreens with zinc oxide I have been having better results. I really dislike the chalkiness of them though, and I have dry skin so it really is not helping in that aspect.

The reason I don't like sunscreens with insoluble filters (so, the inorganic filters plus Tinosorb M and Tinosorb A2B) is that they show up in my facial hair. A tinted product solves this for one layer, but if I reapply a second layer of sunscreen with insoluble filters, it'll show up even if it's tinted. Sunscreens with all-soluble filters never show in my facial hair no matter how many layers I apply, so it allows me to reapply later in the day if I need to. The one instance where I do like sunscreens with only insoluble filters is around my eyes: I find that they sting less and the facial hair issue doesn't occur there.

this isn’t about how zinc oxide is more protective, but could you touch on why it’s frequently marketed as “safe for sensitive skin”? this is def a personal problem, but i’m allergic to sunscreens that contain zinc, which caused a lot of confusion for me because i thought i was just allergic to all sunscreen since i couldn’t even handle the “sensitive” version.

I have the exact same reaction! My sensitive skin reacts badly to mineral filters, but does well with most chemical formulations, as long as they don't contain fragrance, which is a big no-no with my rosacea.

Im happy someone finally said this, I’ve been absolutely loving chemical sunscreens and I feel like they are so effective. And I’m talking about US chemical sunscreens since Japanese and European are way too expensive for such a small amount.
I hate all the fear mongering from soccer moms saying that mineral sunscreens are the best for you and the environment. Every time I say I wear chemical sunscreen people freak out and say “omg it’s causing you cancer!!1” It’s just so annoying

admittedly i prefer chemical sunscreen too for uv protection, but i have to say skin type is a big factor in why I don't mind using inorganic sunscreen formulas too. I am SO oily and I have noticed that the drying effect of oxides is a plus. The pastiness can be mitigated with some bronzer when I use those forms of SPF

The biggest take home message for me is that you don't need to wait 15-30 minutes after applying sunscreen to go out in the sun. That right?
