  • Researchers are celebrating a major milestone in species recovery as the Mexican Gray Wolf population soars past 200 in the wild, thanks in part to facilities like the California Wolf Center in Julian, California. It comes following 25 years of conservation efforts to save and protect the rarest subspecies of gray wolf in North America.
The latest data shows a 23 percent increase in the Mexican Gray Wolf population since just 2021. It also doubles the population recorded in 2017. The California Wolf Center is one of the largest breeding facilities and home to 25 Mexican Gray wolves.

What happens to the older wolves raised in captivity? Are they able to rewild? Or do they live out their lives under human care?

They usually live out their lives under human care, since the cross fostering process is the only primary legal release method in the US recovery zone.
In Mexico; full captive raised adult releases are legal, which can also help with pack culture. There’s another video profiling the release of these wolves into Mexico, where they had to hunt wild turkey within a large enclosure before release.

They're not recovered until they've reached at least 90% of their pre-columbian range and at least 90% of their pre-columbian population.

Canadian wolves now as far south as Ventura county for awhile; we're going to surround the US with Mexican wolves from the south.
