Having read the comments below I'm even more convinced that Rick Steves is an essential voice - though it takes a lot to chip away at embedded prejudices and traditional misinformation.
My 3 takeaways: 1. The Sri Lankan Civil war was largely a result of the British importing cheap (darker skinned) Tamil Nadu labor from India to pick their tea leaves, which created a two tiered system after independence 2. The black cylinders you see on the rooftops of Palestinian homes hold water. The blackness absorbs sunlight which boils away the bacteria in the water, the backup storage is there in case Israel chokes off their water supply 3. Orthodox jewish women also cover their hair (specifically, they wear wigs after marriage), but the West only gets outraged when muslim women cover their hair. I could listen to Rick Steves all day
Such a valuable talk. Listening to this again on Dec. 24, 2023 about 6pm- Bethlehem in the West Bank is empty of tourists tonight. Looking at the Palestinians- people just like us- people who want to live in freedom and raise their kids in safety.

But I decided to comment anyway because a country that put freedom of expression at the very top of their bill of rights deserves someone interested in listening and reiterating perspectives. It's true he has formed an opinion, and this is forbidden in American politics, but I challenge anyone to find someone as interested in sitting down and having dinner with someone who has a different perspective.

I appreciate the efforts you make to inspire and educate our fellow citizens and help them to live their lives applying the "Golden Rule" that Jesus spoke of, which is to always treat others in the same way that we ourselves would want to be treated...which is in Matthew 7;12
Funnily enough Rick would’ve stayed in the West Bank during filming and returned to give this talk, with only positives things to say about Palestinians.
The same can be said about Israelis dear Judy. But the difference is, it can be said in truth. And the truth shines brighter than anything else and will prevail above anything else.
I never noticed before, but Rick's right shoulder is lower than his left. I checked some of his other travel vids that I've seen countless times and its the same, but its really pronounced on this video.
I wonder, is that the shoulder he habitually carries his backpack on? Hard to believe the guy's 68 years old now but he may have inadvertently screwed up his posture.

This is literally a sad case of two brothers kids (Jacob and Ismeal) fighting over a piece of land for over a thousand yrs. I ofteb wonder how their forefather Abraham must feel about this rival. I just find it silly.
First of all it was Isaac and Ishmael, secondly Ishmael was well aware of God's favor over Isaac and not him, and the land was given to the descendants of Isaac through Jacob aka Israel by God. The descendants of Ishmael should be smart enough not to challenge God.
Also, they were half brothers. One was the son of a slave woman. So even at the very beginning of this sad tale there's inequality. Keep in mind even most rabbis will tell you that Abraham is an allegorical figure who appeared in writing during the Babylonian Exile period and never actually existed.

wow, Steve you said people who live in closed communities find it easy to live in fear . you implied that greater understanding is achieved when you get out and explore the world. but later you said we should empathize with the Palestinians living in their closed cities on the west bank who are walled in because of their violence toward Israel! Israel's superb infrastructure is a result of Israel's booming economy (GDP in 2018 was $379 billion), not US AID ($3.8 billion)which is military aid that must be spent on US military equipment. Israel does not need US aid to build its infrastructure. . Israel has a good economy because of the brilliance and industriousness of its citizens, particularly in the high-tech arena. Rick Steves' bias and ignorance are truly profound.

Great video. It really helps those of us who want to understand the issues better. There is nothing like travel to help us understand other parts of the world, but I liked how you pointed out that travel outside of our country helps us also get a better picture of what our country is really like and also how we are viewed outside of our country. When a suicide bomber attacked the Dolphinarium dance hall during the 2nd Intifada he killed mostly 14 15, and 16 year old girls who were there to dance. What exactly did that do to promote any Palestinian objective? If you can think of just one, please tell me what that would be.

In the Bible God told Abraham that all the land will be his descendants.. God told Moses wherever they stepped that land belonged to the Israelites .. Israel 🇮🇱 is much bigger than the modern state! While all this can be debated till blue in the face... but God has the final say... Yes the land has been occupied.. What land hasn’t been? When Abraham went there, it was occupied.. Great video. It really helps those of us who want to understand the issues better. There is nothing like travel to help us understand other parts of the world, but I liked how you pointed out that travel outside of our country helps us also get a better picture of what our country is really like and also how we are viewed outside of our country. I've been using Rick Steves' Travel Books for many years and they always have helped me to have better travel experiences. Looking forward to more from Rick Steves in the future.

The Land of Israel and Jerusalem will always be a problem as long as man is ruling the earth. The problem will only be solved in God's plan when Jesus returns. The land is God's and was promised to Abraham as his eternal inheritance. Any Bible scholar will know these things and that God is ruling in the Kingdoms of men to ensure his plan and purpose comes to fruition. Those who do not know, or believe the Bible, will continue to argue over the land and they will never be able to resolve the problem peacefully.

You mention 1946 and 1947 and I have no idea what you are talking about. You mention borders being internationally recognized? What borders? The green line was an armistice line drawn in green ink on a map in the 1949 armistice talks. It was never a border with border crossings. You call Palestinians suicide bombers as freedom fighters? When a suicide bomber attacked the Dolphinarium dance hall during the 2nd Intifada he killed mostly 14 15, and 16 year old girls who were there to dance. What exactly did that do to promote any Palestinian objective? If you can think of just one, please tell me what that would be.
Israel killed more Palestinian children than Palestinian killed Israel children. Facts! Let's be clear if someone comes to your house then claims it was his, what will you do? Will you stay quiet and do nothing? See the Israel map of how it has grown since 1948. How many Palestinian chases out from their own house and land to make way for Jewish people.
