"Pick of the Day" - 1963 Fender Stratocaster Olympic White

  • Today, Jay picked out an incredibly beautiful 1963 Fender Stratocaster in original custom color Olympic White! Other than a refret and new nut, this thing is all-original. It plays excellently, sounds fantastic, and has only light, honest player wear. This guitar has a lovely acoustic resonance and feels amazing. These pickups sound great, and the guitar comes with its original case!
    A bit of a treat, we had Chandler Eggleston of the Carter Winter band in the shop today, so we teamed him up with this strat and an awesome 1964 Fender Vibroverb 1x15 combo for the demo section of this video.
    For more information about the guitar, please check out:

    Players don’t leave the ashtray/bridge cover on because it is impossible to play. Maybe guitar dealers like when an owner left it on because the guitar is more pristine, but any musician worth its weight is going to take it off. The switch is another issue, if you are a working musician switches get changed to a 5 way. Nice guitar 👍🎸

    2:24 that's not primer, that´s the Olympic White color coat. In 1963 Olympic White was acrylic laquer and it didn't really turn yellow with age. The reason this guitar isn't white but cream is that it has a nitrocellulose clear coat. Olympic White strats from the early 1960's without clear coat are still almost as white as they were when they were new.

I want to hear strummed 6 string chords, big intervallic inversions, and sustain above the 12th fret. Shredding usually doesn't tell you much about the instrument

      I used to believe the same.. to a point.. I now own new guitars.. Admittedly I have to try a few out before I find the one that says 'hello there' Strats and Teles.. But, when it comes to amps.. always vintage.. Simple circuits.. Just have that organic feel about them and dead easy to fix. I'm lucky enough to own a unmolested 57 Bandmaster it sings and sounds glorious. BTW this strat sounds terrible IMO.. but very sexy to look at. But again, that neck does not seem right.

    • @modestoney1577
      @modestoney1577 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spacebarbus I agree that old amps are great. I own a 65 blackface Bandmaster. Sounds great, is easy to maintain, but there are great new amps out there as well. It´s all about how it´s built. There is no "magic" in technology that was lost over the years.
      And i agree - you have to try guitars out to see which one is good. Could be old or new, you just never know until you play it.
      Yet most of times the astronomical prices on vintage stuff are not justifiable from a musicians point of view.

    • @spacebarbus
      @spacebarbus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modestoney1577 It's just the dealers who build this up..28 years ago I was in the position to buy a 61 Strat.. £2000. Realistic price for an old guitar.. Still got it and play it. But I always go back to my newer Strats and Teles.. not custom shops but your bog standard MIA and MIM guitars... As I said in my last post you have to try out loads until you find one that feels and sounds right. I know there are some good amp builders out there but I have never got that thing you get with old amps.. BTW all my amps Bandmaster, 64 Deluxe, Harvard and AC30 were all brought years ago before they started selling for silly money and for much cheaper than these handwired " boutique" amps.. Just yet to find a good mass produced amp.. off my soapbox now!!

      jeffrey price no they shouldnt alot of fenders are like that and the strings are usually fine fender has always done that and just because the steing are off center on this guitar doesnt mean its that because mose fenders saddles slope or angle mine does and the string are fine and everything is set up beautifully

      @reddsshaker3477 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffrey, you are correct. The saddles should be flat, horizontal to the bridge plate. There’s absolutely no reason for them to be curved. By having the saddles curved, you’re encouraging the strings to slide outward, closer to the edge of the fretboard. I’m a professional luthier of 35+ years, and I have worked on literally HUNDREDS of vintage Fenders, especially Strats. Every customer is amazed at how much better the playability is on their freshly setup Stratocaster after the saddles have been adjusted properly.

    • @reddsshaker3477
      @reddsshaker3477 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will add...the only Fenders that will have angled saddles are Telecasters, and similar models that feature courses of strings that share saddles. Angling the saddles is the only way to adjust the action properly on those guitars.

      You can't go solely by the serial number. The numbers are random as they were pulled out of a container in no specific order. The same rule applies to the bodies and necks. A neck or body could have been manufactured the previous year, but it wouldn't be paired to the rest of the components until the following year.
      The dates could end up being different right across the board. I can attest to this still happening in more recent times, as I had an American Standard that, the body was dated 12 months earlier than the neck.

    • @Retro.Studio

      Chris Patrick that’s true Chris, for what I was told they make and spray the all body’s at one period of the year. There is one thing what determine the period date of the year. Pick the pot with the latest week number, so you know your guitar was assembled after that date and not before.

    Great looking guitar, and no disrespwct to the player in the video, but it didn't sound amazing to me. I think so much of a guitar sound is in the hands of the player, and also the amp settings here make it sound all rather sterile. I'm pretty sure if Philip Sayce walked in and picked up this guitar and jammed it through a tube screamer with the amp reverb cranked high everyone would be losing their minds wanting to buy this guitar. Just saying . . .

  • @johnborchardt448
    @johnborchardt448 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That's not "white primer"... that's the white paint. The clear coat yellows over time, so where the clear coat has worn away you get pristine white paint. How is it possible you got that so wrong?

    • @Retro.Studio
      @Retro.Studio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John knows what he talking about he is absolutly right. For what I believe this must be a late ‘63...Why? Because Fender started officially in ‘64 using clearcoat(that yellowish more than without). It could be there experiment fase to start using clearcoat on top of color lacquer. This guitar is to yellowish for a regular or early or mid ‘63.

      Quality control took a nosedive and they implemented design changes that people didn't like, like the 3 bolt neck instead of 4. Some are still great, but it depends. Plus when you get into the 70s you're at the same time full on into the heavier is better nonsense.
