- 🇺🇦 I wanted to show you a big statue and instead I made a friend on the metro. Join Liza and myself as we go on an unexpected tour of yellow Soviet tiles, weird hotels, a church and finally a big old statue.

07:51 Bald, you forgot to mention the reason why the statue has a short sword. It was cut down to be lower to make sure the highest point of Kiev is a cross of a church instead. Ukraine is really superstitious country and sword is considered as War and Cross is peace ✌.

I said this in one of the last videos about how Ukrainians are so friendly and happy. This lovely women is a perfect example of that. Of all the places you travel, Kyiv has got to be at the top of my list, if just to meet the people.

In Kiev-Pechersk lavra, there is an UNDERGROUND network of catacombs with small zones for praising the lord. You should go back and check it out, it's magical.
claustrophobic and dark catacombs... quite the experience!

OMG, I was in Kyiv last year during this time of February and was exploring Arsenalna and these places, checking out which places looked Soviet, the Churches and the Roshen chocolate. Thanks for the nostalgia, Bald.

The yellow tiles was very modern in late 1950s, we have seen them in the Stockholm metro too.

Hi, I’m from Kazakhstan the former Soviet Republic, but I live in America. In the countries like Ukraine and other that were part of the former Soviet Union you will see deep metro stations around the former Soviet republics such as in places like Minisk, Moscow , and Kiev and in others cities in the former USSR because of the threat of nuclear war. I think one metro station in Moscow there would be a secret door so Soviet officials like General Secretary Brezhnev and other top ranking Soviet officials would hide in a bunker that is way deep, ( Thats only if there was Nuclear War ). It is a tourist attraction now but probably closed because of COVID-19. So that’s a bit of info of why there are so deep metro stations.
Just like how they are now in DPRK.
In Kiev we have such a deep metro not because of war, just because of Dnipro river

You can actually ENTER the statue. There is an elevator inside, which takes you to the top.
I was hoping to see more of the actual statue. I know it faces Moscow . Is it made of metal?
And there's a very good Great Patriotic War Museum within the pedestal underneath the statue.
Think bald had other pressing matters to attend to!;-)
Bald, you're gonna love it.
It's not just an elevator. There are two elevators, one moves diagonally and takes you to the top of the pedestal where there's a large observation deck.
The other one is inside the statue itself. After that one, you also have to climb a few flights of stairs. And then some ladders. And then you get to the second observation deck, which is located ON TOP OF THE SHIELD.
It's usually closed in the winter though, so maybe next time.

Hi Bald, the architecture of the Hotel Salyut is probably best described as "socialist modernist", although you could also describe it as being brutalist.
These "styles" are hard to define though - it is rare for a building to be 'exactly categorisable'. In general though, post-modernism is usually classified as a rejection of modernist doctrines, whereas socialist modernism is more of a subset of modernism that was cultivated in the so-called eastern bloc and is hence slightly different to western modernism.

I miss Roshen chocolates. My local supermarket where I was living in New Zealand at the time (about 15 years ago) sold them for a while, then they disappeared.
For US viewers near NYC, the abandoned Nevele ski resort has this Soviet architecture. It's near Ellenville in the Borscht Belt - up by New Paltz. We went there for Halloween, and it was legit scary. Definitely worth the trip
