      Scotty I have stuck pinch bolts(spindle bolts) on my 2004 Ford Taurus. I tried heating with propane but that didn't work, the nut came off easy but the bolt itself is corroded in the knuckle. I dont have a hotter torch but I can get pickel forks to try and spread it apart from the back. Any thoughts?

  • @the_bishop
    @the_bishop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Just as an FYI: Most spring compressors have a large printed warning on them to *not* use impact tools with them. The threaded rods are hardened so the threads won't gall, but that makes them prone to breaking when used with impact tools, which could lead to a really dangerous explosive release of force.

    Should mention that on some cars the hub assembly can fall outward once the strut is removed, and the axle will become unseated from the transmission. So it’s a good idea to use bungee cords to hold it in. Also, you will want to get an alignment after doing this job.

      he actually made a couple mistakes. didnt need to remove tie rod end.
      He should have put the nut on the tie rod end before using the puller, in case the threads get damaged.
      Only a jerk tightens the strut to spindle mounting bolts with a breaker bar, knowing that the alignment shop is going to have to loosen both nuts to adjust camber, which, if you dont note the location/angle of camber before hand (if it was even correct), someone else has to fight.

    Scotty, you're the man dude! I've done that work on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee , same problem, drivers side Strut was leaking! It took me quite a while being a novice, but I got it done.right! After watching you, next time when the passenger side starts to leak, I've got your video to show me the professional way using the right tools, and proper steps taken, to do it correct and save time! Thanks Scotty, your instructions are priceless!👍👍👍👍

    great instructional video Scotty. Personally I always tell my customers if you're going aftermarket you might as well get loaded struts. Just think about it by the time the struts wear out the Upper bushing and spring has that much wear on it as well and you don't want to have to pay someone twice to do the same job over again. I also do them in pairs for the same reason. I've done just one before and had the customer come back a couple months later needing the other one. They don't like having to be without a vehicle for the same problem twice in a short period. I wouldn't either

    For good measure I'd have the front end aligned after his. Things will never fall exactly where they were originally. I even mark stuff before I start, but still.

    • @MrMOGHammer
      @MrMOGHammer ปีที่แล้ว

      it is very unnecessary, the only adjustment you have in the front alignment is the tie-rod. And this part was simply removed and put back in place, without touching the adjustment on it. and the bolts attaching the strut to the swindle assembly are pretty snug fit all the way, there is virtually no play. But yes it is a good idea to mark up a few spots to make sure you put the thing back together exactly as it was.

      @behexen250 - Thanks So Much! But - Of Course spring is notched in between 'plates' - I Saw Scotty do it. LOL - So much for my brain. OK - I'll say, it's a Dumb Name. =p
      You're right about bottoming out - (no jumping) I had such lousy suspension when driving over road's Painted Lines I could feel it in my jaw. Couldn't get shop to acknowledge it was suspension. Hate it when I've asked and they make me feel dumb. >> Bet here's why i thought that stupid idea -> ~ It was bad suspension, Bump Stops were missing (only 1 B.S. left).
      And Now I know > 'Bump Stops' don't work like motor mounts. = D lol kind of funny to think that. - still silly name.
      I read troubleshooting, it's Fun! Even have tested & 'fixed' some things, but never really know if I'm right.
      THANK YOU for my New occupied Brain Cell! Other won't be so lonely. ha ha

    Hi Scotty! I'm a newer tech and I love your vids!. A few questions just out of curiosity: did you replace the rubber mating pad between the spring and the strut on the bottom? Did you change the rubber boot that looked like it was cracked on the bottom? And did you end up doing an alignment on the vehicle after? I was just curious about how you usually do these jobs. Thanks!

    Scotty you need a good hydraulic car hoist to lift the car up and work on it comfortably.
    In a nice big clean well kept garage where you have space to move around and it does not rain.
    Although I admire how efficiently you can do everything just with a car jack and how you have all the good tools you need.
