I love how you can tell how bad somebodies taste in shows are by their opinions of this show. If they think is boring is cause they just like typical shonen battle anime where the main gain has 10 girls for him and is op and there is a fight with a ecchi scene in every episode. (I know cause in anime sites I've found the guys saying shit about this praising this other type of anime xd)
I love how Frieren cried over Heiter and still mourns her friends. Most people in fiction that can live that long usually become numb to loss after a while. Omni man should take some notes. But guys, imagine trying to court Frieren as a human and she likes a "slow burn" oh boy Lmaoo.
She WAS numb to loss at the beginning. Or at least she thought she was. Her appreciation of her friends and future friends are in a big part due to her adventure with her party and Himmel.
Slow burn for an elf probably means you die as a grand wizard. It's worth noting that Frieren was already over 1000 years old at the time she started her adventure with them. To her, 10 years is nothing. She spent longer combing a forest for rare ingredients. She genuinely didn't think it would affect her the way it did.
I feel like I should point out she spent most of her life after her master died secluded in the same woods Himmel found her. She may not have had to deal with the death of short lived humans she cares about more than a handful of times in her long life until Himmel convinced her to join him. In episode 5 the person she saw when the monsters tried to maniplate her was Himmel, but before it had always been her master. I strongly suspect her master was the only human she had gotten close to in 1000 years before the Demon King adventure.
The two stories are basically told simultaneously. There's a lot of flashbacks in this series because the original journey was so important to Frieren and her character development. So we basically get Frieren developing as she reflects apon her journey with the Hero's party. We also slowly get to see Frieren's extremely long and melancholic life as the new journey unfolds. This series reminds me of the lyrics from a couple of different songs about how every story's ending is the beginning of a new story.
Yes, I’m with you Miss Dani. I would like to see Frieren’s journey with Himmel, Heiter and Eisen. They seemed like a very endearing group. Himmel was definitely flirting with Frieren 😅😅. I don’t blame him, she is a babe. Also Fernis fifteen I believe.
Idk if you guys realise this but. Himmel wanted to show her the blue moon weeds but he died before he could. Instead frieren found them on a quest to clean his statue. So in a way himmel ended up showing her the flowers.
How they weave both past and present into the story is truly amazing. Frieren is a strong contender for being a top tier anime that is a must-watch. So excited to see you guys react to this journey.
The word I use to describe this anime is "Sentimental." It gives that mix of heartwarming and sadness, like you're experiencing someone else's nostalgia.
This may just be recency bias, but Frieren has already cemented itself as one of my favorite shows ever. The animation and music are beautiful, the story is unique, and the characters are all likable
Heiter and Eisen playing in the flower field is still one of my favorite scenes of the series and probably also top of all anime I've watched. It just so joyous and it makes me really happy❣️ Btw, love how the episode made you go on a rollecoaster of emotions. I cried too, a few times 🥲😊
Maybe this will help pronounce them right, even if you finished filming it already: Frieren (free-ren) Himmel (himl) Heiter (high-ter) Eisen (i-zen) Fern (fair'n) Stark (shtark) Although you could look (hear?) up all names with google translate in German, since all names are German words:
ปีที่แล้ว +3
It’s honestly way WAY harder for me to read the pronunciation like that… (but then I do know some basic German)
Well I tried lol Meaning of names: Frieren = freezing or to be cold, Himmel = heaven or sky, Heiter = cheerful, sunny or bright, Eisen = iron, Stark = strong, Fern = remote/ far/ distant @
FYI: Remember this - Frieren learned a spell to clean statues..., and also a spell to make grapes sour. Remember the spell she used to make flowers. These are important character details to WHY she collects small, innocuous spells. Also, all the names in this are in German and have meaning to the characters and story: Frieren - the feeling of freezing, as in "I'm freezing!" Himmel - Sky or Heaven - watch for how many times they show the sky while talking about of referencing Himmel Heiter - jolly Eisen - Iron Fern - remote, distant Flamme - flame Stark - Strong Qual - Torment Lügner - Liar Aura - Aura Linie - Line, like a production line in an assembly plant/factory Draht - Wire Kraft - Power Sein - Existence
I love how you can continue watching the series on its TH-cam board even if they cut the scenes due to copyright... plus with Frieren's animation style it looks beautiful.
The fact that the show manages to make you care so much about a character that died halfway through the introductory bit of the first episode is really saying something. Some shows are visual spectacles, some feel more like junk food, but every now and then you get a true gem and it reminds you why we prize story-telling as an artform.
probably one of the anime to get nominated for best anime on 2024, not gonna lie i always watch action/fighting animes but watching frieren changed me it has no fighting scenes that much but i enjoyed every eps
As for Himmel aging more, the only thing I can think of is that he was keeping the demon horn for Frieren that was emitting darkness from it. I would suspect that affected him.
I think so too, but I have heard other theories. One is that he is the only party member without any kind of magic, and others think as ‘the hero’ his role put extra strain on his body.
Honestly, he lived a pretty normal life for a human. It's just that Heiter lived for exceptionally long. He was quite a bit older than 100 by the time he died, while Himmel was 70-80.
There is a story making the rounds in the fandom. A man intervened to stop a knife attack on a Taipei train. When he was asked why he had done so, he had a simple reply: It's what Himmel the Hero would have done. #artinspires
This is such a refreshing change from the normal anime I'd watch (although I wouldn't say it's my absolute favourite), so I'm glad to see you all enjoying it. I do find it interesting that so many people are surprised by Heiter outliving Himmel by so many years. In real life people can die at vastly different ages, even if they have near identical diets and lifestyles, and even if they are closely related. Many people still die in their 40s (not just because of freak accidents or murders), whereas others may live to over 100. Personally I think it would have been too weird for Frieren to reciprocate the crush Himmel seemed to have on her, as he was less than an infant from her POV. We'll just have to see where the story goes with it, though.
4:11 Since Dani knows DnD. What you said + the whole growing old and your loved ones dying of freiren gave me the idea of having a half-elf character who has a human parent that passed of old age, but the elf parent is still alive.
Its a detail that's lost on a lot of people: the two spells Fern draws attention to as examples of Frieren's spell collecting hobby are one that will clean up statues and one thst sours grapes. Only a few minutes later she is using one to repair a statue of her friend Himmel - in a world full of statues of her friends - and soon we learn that ger dwarf companion Eisen's favorite food is sour grapes.
If you havent already been able to tell; Frieren isnt heartless or lacking emotion, but much like elves lives are so much longer it takes her longer to understand her emotions. Watching how shes developed is just a good feeling.
Funny you compare it to a video game. Frieren is a completionist. Now that the main quest is done, she's doing all the side quests she skipped along the way. ETA: 10 years the hero's party journeyed together, 50 years later they watched the second meteor shower, 20 years later Frieren visited Heiter. She lived with him and Fern for four years. So at this time we've seen glimpses of 84 years of Frieren's life. Note she hasn't aged or changed a hair in all of those 84 years. How old was she when the Hero's party met her? That's the question now.
I really needed this show after Shibuya EDIT: Also the "you were everything" quote Dani was talking about at the end was from an Adventure Time sequel series called Fiona and Cake. It's really good but I don't know if you can really watch it without seeing Adventure Time
My friends that are fans of the manga explained to me that to better understand the age of elves in this series is to think 100 years equals 1 year to an elf.
And now you know why this story has been increasingly popular ever since it was first created. Published: Apr 28, 2020 to ?, Manga Genres: Adventure, Award Winning, Drama, Fantasy Authors: Yamada, Kanehito (Story), Abe, Tsukasa (Art) The anime is currently # 1 on MAL. Sousou Frieren which means Frieren the Slayer. If you make it episode 10 you will understand.
Favourite Fan Theory: Himmel aged as fast because he stored the evil dragons Horn in his house and the dark miasma "Poisened" him. But either way himmel must have been around 80 and Heiter reached over 100 Years, that both of them could use some Kind of magic, this could have been the reason for a long live of both.
I love this series because every single episode makes me want to go back, and re-read the entire Earthsea cycle because of how similar of a vibe they have
You don't know me but it's pretty rare I say something like this. Somehow this anime gets better and better with each episode. I think you'll really, really end up liking it. Looking forward to more!
Y’all acting like six months was like sixty years 😂😂. But I understand where you ladies were coming from, time is precious thing. Especially for us humans. But I do appreciate, respect and admire Frieren dedication to whatever her quest might be, rather that be a high priority powerful spell or finding some exclusive flowers for dear friend who has passed away. Perhaps, Frieren’s concept of time will change now that she has an apprentice to think about.
This show has huge character depth and action is coming believe but the story doesn't fully focus on action it really really pulls you in for a full story this has been my favorite anime all season.

Himmel was likely a good 10 years older then Heiter if not maybe more, he was just extraordinarily handsome so he didn't seem older at the time. And him being a bishop could indeed have had something to do with his very long lifespan
After watching 17 episodes of Frieren, I must disagree. Himmel was deeply in love with her. Whatever his reasons were, Himmel only flirted with Frieren. She never responded
In the next episode a kid flips Frieren's skirt up and Himmel gets mad. Himmel yells "You've just seen what I've been trying to see this entire time!" Himmel did not only care for her dearly, but he also was sexually attracted to her. Their bond went beyond sex appeal, but she did have sex appeal. Lol.
by Episode 2, this show makes Himmel, who is dead already, a more compelling character than most other protagonists. The writing is impressive.
2 episodes with no action but stunning visuals and emotional backstories. Welcome to Frieren
Hehehe
