Six-Cylinder Swapped Subaru Impreza Outback Sport - One Take

  • Of all the possible engines available in the Subaru Impreza range, one thing remained constant: they all had four cylinders. That's why we're filming this one. With a flat-six engine sourced from a Subaru SVX, and driveline, suspension, and interior parts sourced from a huge range of other Subaru's, this is one of the more interesting modified Subaru's we've seen. Amazingly enough, it works!
    Check out more about the progress of the project at Evan's TH-cam channel!

      +TheSmokingTire Matt, I like to believe I've been a solid subscriber/commenter on your videos and I'm not sure if this will come across as typical youtube commenter BS but you DEFINITELY want to check that car out and if you can get to Straya to do a one take...DO IT! Those guys have an international cult following which would boost TST and not only that the supergramps build and the story that goes with it is pretty epic. You might have to make the time to do it and spend some money but I think you'd see a quick 100k subscriber bump just from doing that car. Especially if you can get Marty shotgunning with you.

    • @jacobmyers7149
      @jacobmyers7149 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +TheSmokingTire Haha, for sure, we're thinking that the fluid was pretty old and had absorbed a fair amount of moisture lowering its boiling point, and since we live in the midwest (no mountains anywhere near us) we go years without replacing fluid. Not saying that's good maintenance, its just what happens around here. It's been bled now, time to beat on it to see how it does since the cold/snow is finally gone.

    • @jacobmyers7149
      @jacobmyers7149 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +TheSmokingTire Haha, for sure, nothing like that in MN. I did a quick calculation on the day you guys were shooting and I heard about the brake problems, a single 40 MPH deceleration of a 3400 lb car over 3 seconds is about 82,000 watts of energy dissipated into the brakes.
      Assuming 40lbs of steel rotors/calipers (and ignoring a few other factors) a single 60-0 deceleration in 3 seconds would dissipate around 180,000 watts, and raise the temperature of said steel about 106 degrees Fahrenheit. This would add up for each brake use...
      So brake a few times in a pass, and there's an absolute ton of heat. Thus the need for fresh fluid, and big brakes (or carbon ceramics)...its incredible what brakes do...
      As a comparison a 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon edition with a 200 lb driver does 60-0 in ~93 feet (or ~2.115 seconds), which translates to 260,000 watts of heat dissipation for one stop.
      Sorry about the engineer babble, I found it interesting, I'm glad you guys were alright :-)

    The dead zone in the steering goes away when you upgrade the steering rack bushings. It's rather bad with the stock bushings. Subaru uses pretty soft rubber, so every bushing has a ton of mush. I don't know if that's what he did.
    Throttle reaction is purely the difference between cable throttle and drive by wire. The difference in response is rather significant. The nice part of the old SVX engine is it's still cable throttle.

    • @JakeG001
      @JakeG001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Randall Peralta I don't know what UEL is but it sounds like you should just sell the Outback and buy a Legacy wagon, with the 3.0L H6. It's the same as your Outback, but even better, for street use, and they come in manual with the STI 6MT.

    I know there are people who hate certain cars, but you really have to give it to Subaru. They are truly "Lego" cars. I have had mustangs, Camaro, classic Muscle cars and my DD is now a CTSV2. Still my favorite build was my "1991 Subaru Legacy SS" Stock 2.2L Horizontally opposed engine. I took a 90s JDM STI turbo, fuel injectors, water-cooled Intercooler, STI exhaust, 2007 WRX shift linkage, 2007 STI shocks struts, swaybars, Brembos brakes, and 2004 STI wheels everything bolted on, everything was reliable. I added factory Subaru Boost, temp, oil guages. The car looked amazing, looked stock, ran and drove perfectly. The only custom item was done by Rob's ECU to make everything come together and added a 2 Step launch control. Really the only car I regret selling. I miss it. So cool, such a sleeper

    I drive an 02 outback sport that I bought new in 01 and the brakes were not enough for fast driving even before I added some power to the car. • @TheSmokingTire

      +HuffPuff Productions That's because I shoot 6 videos at a time, and my audio equipment doesn't allow for real-time monitoring (because I'm only one person.) So if I shoot for one day, and then go home to realize I've had an issue, that issue will appear in 6 videos, making it seem much worse than it is.

    great choice for a swap. Calling it back dated seems strange. that engine is crank and cam sensors, totally digital. Subaru is a leaping nerd on that stuff. I have an optical distributor and digital ignition in a 1985 RX engine (yes that is 31 years this year).. in a ten speed wagon, with peugeot wheels. Rochester carb, and a Spec clutch (450 ft lbs) made in alabama
    I'd let matt laugh at my project if I was in the neighborhood. You might think it was a cbr 600 before a subaru EA82 boxer.

  • @papapetad
    @papapetad 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Drove the much latter H6 3.0 in a legacy and it was very impressive. Linear and pulled strong all the way. The SVX's were quite rare but I'd heard of these swaps before. With the exhaust the sounds this engine makes are rather agreeable. I'm not sure why this isn't more common as a swap formula. Sure, if you want more power then it means really screwing around to adapt turbos etc...but people do that on so many different cars and engines anyway... At least you get a much better base to start from. As for overall strength of the motor and internals compared to the EJ20/25's and FJ's I wouldn't know but this at 250hp NA with some simple mods is WAY better than a turbo 4 at 300hp. Cool review

    • @Prodriver33
      @Prodriver33 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a rare swap due to drivetrain reliability. The Subaru 5spd is from the old 4spd Subarus without much modification. It can barely handle the stock 2.5l and we all know it’s not strong enough to handle the wrx even when stock. So asking it to handle the torque of the h6 is too much. And swapping over the entire drivetrain just to get the STi 6spd is unrealistic unless your a passionate mechanic.

    • @Prodriver33
      @Prodriver33 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The H6 EZ30 has heads quite similar to Porsche and it has a timing chain making it even stronger than the EJ’s, the SVX EG33 is extremely strong it was the SVX auto transmission that had all the problems. It can handle mods, looking at what they did for the F1 flat 12 would be a great way to mod it as they were pretty similar in concept.
