- What is involved when recording for All of Bach?
All of Bach is the Netherlands Bach Society’s project to record all of Bach's works in high quality image and sound and share them with the world for free. In honour of ten years All of Bach, we are giving a unique behind-the-scenes look. A crew of at least six and sometimes as many as 20 people is involved with an average recording: from video director to audio recording producer, score reader, data handler, concert producer and Head of All of Bach. In this documentary, All of Bach crew members, who have been involved from the start of All of Bach, give us an insight into this unique project from their own area of expertise. Video director Bas Wielenga: ‘Bach's music is too great to be restricted to the audience in the church or the concert hall. Everyone should be able to see and hear it!’

I am a pro video producer. Upon my first viewing of this channel I knew the videos had a team behind them. They are top notch! It was so good to see a channel as dedicated to the sound as the visuals. This channel is a gem.
Als Kameramann selbst habe ich mich immer dafür interessiert, wie ihr das so perfekt macht. Ohne Frage der beste Kanal auf TH-cam, nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch in Bezug auf die Videoqualität. Die Szenen sind immer einfach herrlich durchdacht und passen, als ob Bach sie gemeinsam mit der Musik komponiert hätte!

Happy Birthday, All of Bach! I suppose you don't fully realize how much impact you have on your watchers and listeners. I live in the southern-western part of Poland. Sometimes, over (say) coffee, we discuss individual clips with friends. Everybod is fascinated with the quality of sound and video, let alone the quality of the performances themselves. The best Bach channel, no doubt about it.
From the very beginning, the production quality of your content has set this channel far above others in the genre and is the one resource I point anyone to for all things Bach. The superior audio quality from period-correct instruments, beautiful cinematography, seamless transitions, and perfect framing of each of the musicians really has made me feel like I've gotten to know them over the years. Thank you for this formal introduction to the team who makes the magic happen - each of you deserves accolades for bringing these wonderful performances to the rest of the world.

the ultimate compliment to the video team is that viewers on UTUBE can watch the performances and not even be aware of the craft behind it. Needless to say, the music deserves no less but the All of Bach team is doing a remarkable job. Its a little hard to believe that any Bach lover wouldn't agree. Or that everyone involved doesn't take enormous pride in their product. These videos may not last as long as JS Bach in our consciousness but they might well set a benchmark for musical video recordings for some time to come

It is such a gift. Your channel means so much to me. Some 20 years ago, I thought to myself, how rich are we as society having inherited the music of Bach (and they are available to everyone). Now I want to add, we are even richer, to have these stellar videos/recordings of them.
And wow, how many people work on it. On the first AoB video, I realized the outstanding video and sound quality, and now it makes sense. Thank you for giving whatever you are giving to this.
I thought to myself the very same thing, 50 years ago. You see how the miracle of Bach ripples through the generations. I would love to have another 50 years to explore it, though no amount of time would suffice. It is a gift beyond measure whose mystery is beyond time and can never be exhausted.

A day without some Bach in it is a waisted day for me. Thanks for providing me my daily fix. NBS is the best. Many groups include the applause. Thank you for not doing that. It ruins the mood the music leaves me in.
I also appreciate leaving out the applause. The audience tends to clap too soon -doesn't allow for the last note to fall, for the silence that envelops the music.

This channel is a tonic to the soul, not only for the beauty of the material -the delightful renditions of Bach; but because it shows an appreciation for the beauty of good work, a true love for a craft, something that seems lost nowadays. (08:39) "Something which is note quite in tune can be more beautiful because the intention behind it is better than a perfectly executed performance" - truer words were never spoken! I've lost count of the techincally perfect but soulless performances I've sat through, especially in recent decades (not just 'early music', but across the spectrum). I wish every musical director and most musicians would post this quotation on their wall! Fortunately, this is *never* the case with NBS, which is one of many things that makes NBS exceptional.
From the moment I first saw an NBS video I immediately appreciated the very well thought-out and executed camera work, which really has the power to add another dimension to the performance (e.g., I'm thinking of the sudden top-down view in _Actus Tragicus_ at the end of _Es ist der alte Bund_ when the soprano sings her last notes) as well as the high audio quality. Huge thanks to all the amazing "invisible" people involved in making these video the best Bach videos on the internet! 👏👏 You deserve just as much appreciation as the performers!

Bravo! And thank you so much to the video and audio recording crew! I find that more and more of my favorite versions of Bach works are the videos of the Netherlands Bach Society.
I really appreciate and admire this huge project and I wish you can complete the work as planned. Great that you - besides the outstanding musical level of course - produce both great video and audio quality. There are so, so many video productions also in the classical music world where the sound is awful or being badly compressed, and this makes such a huge difference for the music perception.

I grew up in a generation of people that were able to listen to music without the accompaniment of camera stunts and unsurprisingly so did Bach. In the future will composers have to include camera stunts when composing music. The point of listening to concert music is to concentrate on the music without being concerned about video camera gymnastics. Concerts today have become duets for video cameras and music. I can well imagine how Bach would react to the practice of using video cameras to slice up his music. The production of this concert is a circus and the sacredness of Bach's music takes second place to the visual show.
What a strange comment you make. You would never have known most of these Bach works without the devotion of all musicians plus sound and image engineers here involved. People at home with their TH-cam do have totally sacred experiences, all that Bach himself would have intended and hoped for.
