Up until 3 weeks ago I was driving a 86 acadian with a bad rear seal, many times I told myself I'll fix it this month but I never did I always told myself If you fix that the car will rust away, I said that because the oil was the only thing protecting the underside of the car lol. I will be driving it as a winter beater but I'm fixing the seal in my spare time, I'll also add that that car is the best thing I have ever drove it's loud and ugly but never any serious mechanical problems love it.
Nice video Shawn.... I cant wait to see you put that k member in. I have had alot of old cars 20/30/40 year old cars and I have never seen that bad of rust on a frame.
I personally love the longer format videos... but I do agree it does take a while to upload. I junked a Windstar that was at least that ripe but around back. The funny thing about new cars is they don't really give you much warning before they go in spectacular fashion! Keep up the great videos Shawn
I'd rather these be fully in depth two-part 20 minute videos rather than time compressed 1 part videos; keep up the great work! I'll always watch these and learn something either way :)
I had to do the clutch on my sisters Saturn SC1. So the Kframe had to come out. I was going to do a vid of how good the kframe on my 96 sunfire was compaired to this one but I couldn't find my gloves and I had been too slow removing the oil plug earlier that day. Kepp em comin like we know you will.
you should spray some pb blaster or some type of penetrating oil on it and leave it overnight----it makes a world of difference when removing those rusty bolts
my 97 sunfire subframe lasted 8 years past the lines but she just broke, after 22 years i guess its over. oh well not bad i liked it ok sorry to see it go
Concerning this car, far better to have a horrible end than horror without end. This is very common in Michigan where we have no vehicle inspection laws and fewer people who can afford to keep a car in safe operating condition. Not to mention the salt.
holy crap! never seen a cavy that rusted and i have worked on a crapload of them they must use tons of salt and liquid evil on the roads up there in my neck of the woods they use salt, liquid evil and anthracite coal ash on the roads and you need to get it off as soon as the roads dry up
wow.. ya sure that thing is worth all the effort... I mean , I know a poor man has poor ways.. which is why I've learnded what I know about cars.. I've pulled a 2.8 v6 on a sat.. got on an engine stand and dropped in an used crank with new barrings.. with tons of break in lube and my wife drove it for over 3yrs. just couldn't afford to pay someone to do it.. so I just figured it out. love your vids man.. tc
Thanks alot bro!! Your videos helped me out a lot! Just replaced the sub frame in my 2003 cavalier!! Sub frame. 4 complete strut assemblys. Control arms. Ball joints. Bushings. Swaybar. Swaybar links. Tie rods. And an alignment. :) around 600 bucks to do it all myself. Much love from the 219. I'm subbed btw.
this is just plain scary. I drive 120 miles a day to work and back.. Wonder whats coming at me now on the road!. My pontiac is a 2000 model..and is kept in top shape by a trusted mechanic we been goin to for 20 yrs.. We will do without extras before we drive a car that needs attention so we can pay for it. He kept our five cars safe for wife and 3 kids and me. Kept a grand in savings at all times just for that. Theyre all done with college now..heee..haw!
Thank you.. Im spending $50.00 extra to have the yard pull the part, but you effectively saved me 4 EXTRA hours of driving, and then bashing my skull into a wall repeatedly by showing me what will go wrong.
Can you give me some advice please! I was about to change front ARB bushes on my 2006 Saab93 diesel when i realised i couldn't get a spanner on the bush clamp rear bolts as they are tight against the bulkhead. Is it possible to undo a few subframe mounts and maybe prise it down to reach the bolts without to much dismantling? I would love your imput, thanks.
I have let the sub frame down . All I have done is losen the front bolts and remove the rear. Make sure you have a jack under it as you dont know how far down it will come
@gumpster66 Thanks my friend. Sometimes you just don't have a choice. This car should have went to the junk yard but should be good now for a year or 2 tops lol
ShawnCFarm thanks for the reply and yes I agree. I'm teaching myself arc welding so as to replace or beef up my pinch weld seams on my 2002 Chevy Impala.
Do you know how long a shop would normally take to replace a K frame on a GM car? Mines all rusted out, and I picked one up at a salvage yard, and need a shop to put it in.
I guess I commend you for attempting this in your driveway. That person should have junked that car. I was told you should never weld on the frame. You've welded on everything. Tough job, but you did it.
Scrap that piece! Its funny how everything up your way rusts out before its wore out...that's one thing I never worry about down here in texas.
lucky skunks except everyone in the world is not trying to move in up here

I envy the patience you have, lol.
there would just be too much blue flame swearing for me
@RealCadde Your right there. Not sure where they have been getting there oil changes done , but they are not looking out for problems
@DrJohnBecker I think its ran out tonight lol. I have to fix the fuel lines now
@shepshepherd They funy thing is, is that it was under oiled once
@ShawnCFarm yeah here less ice less snow, thought they mixed salt with corn for some spots like alberta.
As quickly as cars rust up there in the north, I hope they are cheap enough. It seems to me that you'd spend a fortune every few years.
@cipmars Shes good now with the new frame in it but the fuel lines are another story
@chevyreaper I should have never let it leave the yard, but people have to get to work, and thought it would last a week or so
@krismounts It was and hope once I'm done that they don't have anymore problems with it for a long time
@cbhonda90 They put to much salt on the roads up here
@Erated78 Yup, and its going to like new after I'm done with it lol
Another good vid shawn....
Nice video Shawn.... I cant wait to see you put that k member in. I have had alot of old cars 20/30/40 year old cars and I have never seen that bad of rust on a frame.

no warning at all and got to get towed
I'd rather these be fully in depth two-part 20 minute videos rather than time compressed 1 part videos; keep up the great work! I'll always watch these and learn something either way :)
@swss12 It takes time, alittle here and there and it will be done. You should have seen it before I cleaned
I've dropped out quite a few subframes myself! I did 5 years at a Chevy dealer. But it was in California, definitly not that rusty.
I had to do the clutch on my sisters Saturn SC1. So the Kframe had to come out. I was going to do a vid of how good the kframe on my 96 sunfire was compaired to this one but I couldn't find my gloves and I had been too slow removing the oil plug earlier that day. Kepp em comin like we know you will.
dang, I think I'd scrap it if it was mine lol
@dwaynejperry Thanks my friend, it takes at least 8 hours or more to upload a 20 min video with me high speed lol
@backwoods3214 White knuckle all the way, everytime I hit a bump it tryed to pull me into the ditch
@wazclan1964 Thanks and the car will be good for a few years after this repair.
@hp11208 Thats because I keep bringing stuff home lol
@redneckbryon I have two out back that I can have some fun with, just run out of time to do it
Man that´s really a horrible rusty mess...cheesh.
How old was this POS again?
Kudos, that your are trying to fix it!
@ShawnCFarm wicked repair when Shawn hands a on whats needs a repairer if your stumped he can really help.
@fegolem Nope they still cost alot to buy new and not sure where people are getting there money from
Awesome video!!! Can't wait for part 2!!
@martian953 Na the repairs are cheap, just starting to kill me lol
@topfireman Ya I'm way behind on my own things to do
@wildcat2087 You still need brakes
you should spray some pb blaster or some type of penetrating oil on it and leave it overnight----it makes a world of difference when removing those rusty bolts
@RoflmaoAtSheepeople I think I'm going to have a few beer tonight. I thought I was done with it and now the fuel lines started to leak
@TINRFD Shes a 96 or 97 so its over the hill for up here
wow you have a task there to get that done without all the lines leaking.
good stuff my workshop is like your garage need more space.
@jon998811 I'd love to live where its rust free
@wasjunk11 Theres not alot left ot fix lol. I thought I was done and now the fuel lines started to leak
my 97 sunfire subframe lasted 8 years past the lines but she just broke, after 22 years i guess its over. oh well not bad i liked it ok sorry to see it go
@dcave74 Thanks my friend
Man, I'm not for scraping cars for scratches, smoke or any treehugger's reasons, but this is a major safety hazard.
@MisterMattyMo Comming soon
@dirtTdude I didn't make alot as I didn't forsee what a mess it was lol. I had to replace the fuel lines at the end as well
@4micaman Thanks my friend. The rust just kills cars. I'll think twice before I do another one on my back lol
double hammer air gun and 6 cfm air compreser y need when garage is cleaned

if i was the owner id part out as much as i can and then junk it, poor car and resrect for trying to keep it running.
@josderedneck22 Thanks myfriend
@johnygogo People have to be told because they do not know what the underside of there car looks like
@ShawnCFarm You can work miracles, then! The fuel lines are tedious to change, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to this job.
@chox2001 Hahahah I now have to fix the fuel lines. I should have just done them all right from the start
@kevin92xj I'd love to work on new cars all day lol
@swss12 Thats what it was like on the drive home lol
holy crap! never seen a cavy that rusted and i have worked on a crapload of them
they must use tons of salt and liquid evil on the roads up there
in my neck of the woods they use salt, liquid evil and anthracite coal ash on the roads and you need to get it off as soon as the roads dry up
On the Cavaliers that youve worked on did any of them ever have clunking noises made when going into drive or reverse?
@backwoods3214 Working on it lol
@rangerfx42002 It should have been , but its still cheaper to fix it
@cipmars I'm getting tired of working on this car lol
My wife was just ran off the road in hers!!! It has been a great car... 2000 and only 78k miles... I am thinking it will be worthwhile to fix this...
@lincolnmaniac I've dome alot of these k frames but this ones the worse I'v ever done
@sc0tte1 I will keep you in mind tomarrow night when I fix the fuel lines
All of that could have been avoided with some extra care over the years. To me it seems the owner didn't care at all. Look where that got him!
subframe is a really miserable spot to try and get at regularly to prevent rust especially the inside of it
wow.. ya sure that thing is worth all the effort... I mean , I know a poor man has poor ways.. which is why I've learnded what I know about cars.. love your vids man.. tc
The domino effect in action.
@backwoods3214 hahaha nope shes not a single
Great video Shawn, I don't know if I would try this job but it sure was good watching how to it again and again. Thanks
@edzgarage I didn't make alot but I got a few good videos out of it, thats just the way I see it lol.
Thanks alot bro!! Your videos helped me out a lot! Just replaced the sub frame in my 2003 cavalier!! Sub frame. 4 complete strut assemblys. Control arms. Ball joints. Bushings. Swaybar. How hard is the sub frame to do? I've already done struts awybar links ball jointa
That has to be the most rotten in-use car I've ever seen! The K-frame looks like it's from a 1977 car, as opposed to a 1997 one.
@kortt Me too
@MegaMarine111 She'll live for a few more years
K-Frame, is that the bit that claps on to the main frame to keep the output end of the RWD trans and drive shaft from dropping off to the ground?
this is just plain scary. I drive 120 miles a day to work and back.. Wonder whats coming at me now on the road!. clean that garage!
@ShawnCFarm You know how it is with those older Cavaliers, Shawn. They werent meant to last longer than say 10 years.
gotta love having to work on every one elses junk before you can even work on your own lol
@55points You just never know whats on the road. There are some really bad cars out there.
WOW, that car is crazy rusty, they should just get a new-old car.
To bad you can't take it off the road!
@uhrsker Its never ending
Thank you.. Im spending $50.00 extra to have the yard pull the part, but you effectively saved me 4 EXTRA hours of driving, and then bashing my skull into a wall repeatedly by showing me what will go wrong.
I LOVE videos like this. I do a bit of work like this myself so trust when I really do enjoy watching and learning from these vids.
Can you give me some advice please!

@@ShawnCFarm
Do you think i Could i leave drop links and steering connected to achieve enough spanner clearance, thanks for your input
@RoflmaoAtSheepeople hes going to need more than 2 oz.if it aint stright
@gumpster66 Thanks my friend. Sometimes you just don't have a choice. This car should have went to the junk yard but should be good now for a year or 2 tops lol
Nice job as usalley man !
Well we would get along just dandy , this is the back yard mechanic I'm turning into 😂
Always good to know how to do it yourself
ShawnCFarm thanks for the reply and yes I agree. I'm teaching myself arc welding so as to replace or beef up my pinch weld seams on my 2002 Chevy Impala.
@500passwords Oh it gets better
@gloorbit lol
@4gasem I'm a horder lol
@bigpaw64 This is very ture
@farmboy30117 I can't work in it. I hate all the mess. At work everything is clean and I know where it is
@backwoods3214 I need a beer now
@ManicMechanic007 And its not done
did u drink rum to settle nerves after driving it home
Taking this job over the next week or so... incrementally. Thanks for posting this.
Fun (to watch, ha ha) to see how much work this can be with home tools.
@carrabec99 Hahahah I like that one
@spelunkerd Yes I wish I had a car lift
@ShawnCFarm yeah just drive it over a speed bump at 30km/h and the wheels will bust out hahaha
Do you know how long a shop would normally take to replace a K frame on a GM car? Mines all rusted out, and I picked one up at a salvage yard, and need a shop to put it in.
+suikojay Yea dude my 2001 cavailier k frame just rusted out and cracked it will take at least a good shop 4-6 hours with a hoist
give the car to dave for a day
I guess I commend you for attempting this in your driveway. That person should have junked that car. I was told you should never weld on the frame. You've welded on everything. Tough job, but you did it.
He junked it not too long after arrrrrrrr
