- Not everyone owns a colorimeter or spectrophotometer to calibrate and profile their monitor. Luckily there are ICC Profiles available on the internet for many monitors. Let's check which levels of accuracy we actually can expect from those profiles.

I just got my Dell S2721dgf a few days ago and right off the bat I noticed that RTINGS' ICC prifle was as if I had a green tint on everything. I'm currently using yours as I've found that to offer the most contrast of the bunch while also keeping the colos the most balanced. I still play with the colors all the time but your ICC and RGB setup is the reference for me.
I came here straight from your S2721DGF review - excellent stuff! The thing about monitors for me is that I buy one, set it up and then I want to move on to other things. That is when monitor reviews and content such as that become irrelevant to me - and probably to many others, too. However, this kind of informative and perhaps a bit niche content about monitors I found to be very interesting and it made me sub. I don't think people are going to sub just for monitor reviews for the reasons I mentioned earlier, but people might just want to see a lot more of this. All the best and thanks for the video!

So while borrowed ICCs help colors to be more accurate, an individual profile should always lead to best results

I’m a colorblind photographer so I love these sort of technical color videos. I rely on hardware solutions to make sure my colors are accurate, I recent found a huge problem with my previous monitor so I’m calibrating my new IPS this evening. Great video

I believe you could reveal which one is the Dell ICC, so that we could verify more or less how do manufacturers' profiles stack up against individual calibration and if they're enough for non-critical use.

Super interesting. I've always thought about just using one of these profiles as I've never calibrated one of my monitors and I don't really want to buy a colorimeter as I most likely wouldn't get much use out of it after one day of calibrating. Great video! I hope more people get to see it!

Hi, what did u use, the setting OSD (brightness, contrast, RGB)?

But also I think there is one thing to consider- may be they are using On screen display setting of monitor something different.
So one would need to set it to that first (like brightness, contrast, rgb) and then apply icc profile download to see the changes.
Not sure that was done as I see brightness is set to 32 for all profile.

Thanks! I used whichever settings they gave with their ICC profiles. Unless there weren't any specific settings shown or mentioned, then I just assumed they're using default settings.
@@techlessYT Actually... I checked last week, rtings and bejan has mentioned brightness contrast and gain setting for RGB, not sure about others. Adjusting that may change things a bit as an overall color output.
BTW... I am facing a different issue, if you can help-
Recently got that Dell S2721DGF monitor having a wide color gamut. I applied the third party icc with OSD preset to custom color and looks good to me.
But the prob is- desktop wallpaper and window interface looks over saturated, seems windows doesn't support wide color beyond 100%sRGB in UI.
Since in Photoshop, Windows photo app & Chrome the color looks good/normal.
Any clue/suggestions please, how to figure out this? As I really didn't get the monitor just for editing. Rest looks weird and uncomfortable to eyes.

Unfortunately exact same thing for 24G2 Rtings profile, 7500K whitepoint and looks very off compared to both your profile and tftcentral, which both are almost identical.
Looks to be a systematic problem with them maybe?
Anyway glad I took the time to actually compare the profiles from different sources, otherwise I probably would have just used the rtings profile.

There's something suspicious with Rtings's ICC profiles. I've downloaded several and ALL of them are exactly 7 KBs in size, regardless of monitor model. Meanwhile yours and HUB's profiles are at least 2 orders of magnitude higher, often around 1000 KBs in size. That doesn't make much sense to me. Also supporting this idea is when I apply their profile it makes virtually no visual changes in my eyes, meanwhile yours and HUB's clearly show a change. How are they even accurately evaluating a monitor's color accuracy when every single ICC profile they're spitting out (which is presumably the one they used) is exactly 7 KB.
Granted, my monitor knowledge is limited so someone please explain it to me.

did you just install it and double click it if so then you did the icc profile wrong your suppose to apply the icc profile and theres videos that show it
What I'd really like to see is a calibration guide for the Dell S2721DGF. I have a i1display pro and it would be really handy to know what monitor menu settings should be turned on or off before calibration.

Appreciate your feedback, thanks! As Dell doesn't state anything on their website I assumed they expect everything set to standard. That's at least how I measured their profile. The brightness should have a negligible effect, so I'd recommend setting this according to the ambient lighting.

I got a quick question for you or anyone else that can reply: it seems that my S2721DG came with a screen protector, a film (like those opaque ones we used to use in smartphones) but I'm not sure if that's really a protector and can be removed or if it's the 3H screen coating mentioned in the manual.

Any would be fine but not the defective Rtings profile. You can just use mine if you like. You'll find that in the video descriptions of my S2721DGF review.

Just wondering what do you mean with downloading the profiles? Cant you just copy them?
I'm not sure what you mean. You will find download links to ICC profiles in the video descriptions of my reviews. These contain calibration and profiling which goes far deeper than just doing OSD tweaks.
Which ICC would you recommend even though they would perform differently on my S2721DGF?
I doesn't make too much of a difference if you go with Dell's, Bijan's, HU's or mine.

Stock is no profile at all, so just disable any profile you might be using. I would recommend using DisplayCAL's profile loader btw.

Great video but I have a question. While calibrating or using these ICC profiles, do we use the OSD tweaks you and Hardware Unbox suggest or do we use factory settings shipped by manufacturer before installing these profiles ?
I would suggest using the respective OSD tweaks for every ICC. And that's also what I've done for this comparison.

@@Vicky-il5yv yup still should. The ICC profile shows colors beyond the rgb level so you wont notice the difference when you first install it. Lemme know if you need anything

@@Vicky-il5yv indeed Windows doesn’t go above 100% sRGB. If Windows generally looks oversaturated then I assume the monitor custom settings are off and you could test different ones with its iCC profile. My answer is generic but it’s trial and error until you get one that suits your panel.

hmmm, nice video, HOWEVER...... the question is..... if I download a profile, HOW can I tell that my colors got accurate or not? unless I'm using two profiles and one is broken I can't tell, now can I....
Yes, that's the problem: you can't know if the colors are accurate if don't have a measurement device. Well, unless the profile is totally broken of course.

your spyder colorimeter is not a professional grade and not precise. use x-rite sensor and your results will be mush more accurate. pro calibrator use only x-rite hardware for a reason.

If are on Windows did you notice the single image when set as wallpaper looks more saturated infact over saturated than you see it in Photoshop/Windows Photo app?

HUB uses 200nits as brightness for their calibration.
Rtings uses 100nits as brightness for their calibration.
Who has the better setting?
And one more thing, before you apply the ICC profiles do you calibrate for white point first or just have the monitor on default factory settings?
And I'm using 140nits. There really is no "better".
Yes, I do calibrate to D65 and gamma 2.2 first. HU calibrates to D65 as well, but chose sRGB gamma, which is very close to 2.2 but slightly different. Bijan seem to have chosen to calibrate to the native color temperature instead, which is roughly 6700 K in this case.
I and all others also performed a pre calibration through the monitor's OSD. I used their respective RGB settings for this test.
