Mary's passing has broke my heart. That voice of innocent soul, her adorable face and personality has had me under a spell for a long time. RIP Dear Mary, your voice lives on.
The Lloyd Thaxton Show was one of the best dance shows ever produced. I used to watch it everyday it was on. Channel 13, Los Angeles. He had so many great groups on his show. And he was very funny, entertaining. Great seeing this short with the Shangri-Las. Mary was so damn cute. Her voice! Great rendition of the Isley Bros. classic, Shout. RIP Mary, you were truly awesome!
I was thinking the very same thing. What a beauty. She had such an innocence while singing those wild songs. Just read that she died recently at age 75. So sad.
The Shanghai-Las were real fashion icons back in the mid 60’s! True! When they came along in 1964, they were the 1st girl group to wear PANTS on stage! Before them, all the others wore dresses. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
And already from 1964 they toured with James Brown (who - just like myself once - thought they were black...), The Iguanas (with a young Iggy Pop!) and The Sonics from Tacoma, WA (Kurt Cobain's favorite band, who made yet another comeback just before Covid put an end to allt that 4 years ago). And a young Billy Joel played the piano on their first hit, 'Remember (Walkin' in the Sand' in 1964, covered by Aerosmith in 1980 (on the 'A Night in the Ruts' LP, when they made a comeback after disco and punk killed the radio star 1975-79...). When they signed with Mercury, they actually toured in 1967/68 with another band from that label, Vanilla Fudge (who became a world famous heavy prog rock band that I saw in Copenhagen around in 2001...), which also was the begiinning of the end, and they had no more US hits. They were still popular in UK, and toured in England with The Animals. They never saw any money though, and just disappeared in 1968 (Mary Ann was already hooked on alcohol and drugs), with their name unregistered why another band appeared as The Shangri-Las in 1989, even singing their old hits... Youngest member and most often lead singer, beauty Mary Weiss, died on Friday, aged 75 (b. Dec. 28, 1948, thus being 11 months younger than the Ganser twins, who died in 1972 (Mary Anne, from drug abuse), and in 1996 (Marge/Margeruite, from breast cancer). Betty Weiss (also a redhead beauty who had a baby in 1964, and took a short break until 1965), is now the sole survivor, aged 77. J, Sweden (and Wikipedia...)🤔
All female Filipino/American rock group Fanny (!) from Sacramento was the first ever to get an album deal with a major label circa 1971, and had a couple of hits in the early 70s, and also appeared on German TV (available here on YT), where one of the two Filipino sisters (a gay beauty, almost 80 and a big girl now, whereas her sister dated Gene Simmons of Kiss in 1974...) wore brand new, German Birkenstock sandals (Birkenstock had just opened an American division, and was introduced on Wall Street in October 2023).
The show originated in 1961 as a local program out of KCOP in Los Angeles. Three years later, it went into national syndication and received high ratings for the next eight years. Your Hartford station must have one of the many, many stations that picked it up.
me my friends and cousin use to sing this in our basement. What a flashback. We were teenagers in the 80s and 90s singing this and some other classics. This one was so much fun. Great footage here too but the strip across their faces is ruining it.
Lead vocalist, per song "Shout"- Betty (in spite of Mary later lip-synching the song on the Lloyd Thaxton show in February 1965 due to Betty's absence)
Sadly alot of Girl Group Icons are no longer with us from the 1960's. The Supremes, The Shirelles, Labelle, The Marvelettes, the Ronettes. Then Lisa Left Eye Lopes dies in 2002 in April and in November a New Girl Group is introduced to The Public called Girls Aloud in the UK and in 2021 Sarah Harding dies of Breast Cancer. Lloyd Thaxton also created Tiger Beat, and in her Book Rock Star, there was a group loosely based on them called Nellie & The Knockers.
When the artists could sing live and have great choreography tells alot about a time when they had true talent and didn't have to be dirty or phsyco to get a hit!
The twins! They were so damned cute when they screwed up their movements then laughed about it--they were excellent--just young girls making nation wide shows! Mary managed em--booked travel, hotels, everything.
These interviews were always so awkward and uncomfortable with these old guys either doing flirting skits with young girls or just asking dumb questions to guys. You could tell how annoyed the twins were at his "leader of the pack" comment.

Based on the posted date of the broadcast, Mary would have been less than two months past her 16th birthday. (December 28, 1948) But she was indeed 15 when they recorded that first album.
I believe there was a girl who joined this group at some point in the 60's named Betty. Does anyone know what her full name was? Betty Weiss was lead singer Mary Weiss's elder sister who sang lead vocal on one or two of their tracks and left the group early on...she briefly emerged frim seclusion in the early 90s when the Shangs tried to prevent an imposter group from using their name...
@@mikelewis1436 Oh OK. Thanks for the additional information. I believe the lead singer of the imposter group you mentioned was actually named Betty. Or at least that was the name she was using. Betty was Mary's older sister and they were originally a foursome. Betty got pregnant, very taboo in those days for single girls so she left the group but returned later on but unfortunately their heyday was past by that point. But there's some videos of the group as a foursome again.
You've already been put straight about Betty Weiss. I'd just like to say that I had the misfortune of seeing the bogus Shangri-las in the time frame you mentioned. The tickets to the show were provided to me free, otherwise I never would have gone. I knew they were phony, but went out of morbid curiosity. The lead singer had long blonde hair...longer than Mary's, in fact, but she was obviously going for that look. One of the other two "Shangri-las" was - wait for it - her mother! In the course of their show, they did exactly TWO Shangri-las songs; "Remember" and "Pack," as you might expect. Everything else was some other artist's song. I mean, really?? They sat in the lobby signing autographs after the show for the clueless patrons who came up and asked for them. I had to really restrain myself from approaching them and outing them.
