Mary's sweet voice will live forever. Whether she sang or just spoke, her soft, innocence gave her one of the most distinctive voices of rock and pop music. She left an indelible mark and I will miss her greatly.💓😔
I grew up with them in Cambria Heights in Queens New York ! They started out singing on the corner on Linden Blvd. Lost touch after high school. I always wondered what happened to them. Rest in peace Mary, you were a sweetheart !
They had a really good sound, and the music was incredible! Unfortunately, Mary Ann Ganser met an untimely fate, it is sad about what happened to Mary Ann. The only survivor is Betty Weiss. Too bad Betty doesn't come forward an write a book about the Shangri-Las, I am sure it would be a best seller.
I don't think a Betty Wise book on The Shangri Las would be a best seller now. I mean, I'd love it if she did write one and sure, it'd sell to the usual suspects - you, me and an ever diminishing bunch of Boomers and Gen Xers but I just don't think the interest is there anymore. I thought they might gain some wider currency when Amy Winehouse borrowed the Shangri Las vibe wholesale for her 'Back to Black' album but they didn't. I'd love to be proved wrong on this.
The bit i love was their music was ballsy. They had a bit of a tough reputation didn't do skirts or dresses and wore early lycra is that? and boots. Mary's voice went from vunerable to the defiant . . .I was so sad on hearing of mary's passing i guess there will always be a place in my heart for her.
Did you know there was a third sister Ganser (Gail), even younger? She didn't get very old (1957-2009), like the Weiss brother (George). I've updated heavily on various Discogs pages, added photos and so on. As a Swede, I've never seen any of this (particularly the trousers thing), and I haven't listened to them, or The Crystals, The Supremes or The Shirelles since the 80s...
3rd Ganser sister? No i didn't. . The Ganser sisters were identical twins as i am sure you know. . yes there was a weiss brother who helped betty bring up her son.
It's kinda cool Aerosmith made a comeback after disco and punk ruled the radio 1975-80 with a remake of "Remember..." (Steve Tyler's childhood wet dream...), athough I never liked 'A Night in the Ruts' (1980) very much. I like the 70s Aerosmith, but actually saw them at a festival here in Sweden some 18-20 years ago. I left after 30 minutes... I prefer heavy 70s psychedelic rock, Blue Cheer's 1st LP, 60s Grand Funk Railroad (until they dropped "Railroad" in 1970 and instead added a keyboardist to sound more commercial, like Steppenwolf (I saw them too, some 20 years ago - pathetic!). Modern and classic (mainly British and Scandinavian) prog rock, heavy rock, hard rock, blues/blues rock, The Residents (one guy left, only...), Leonard Cohen, Hendrix, Doors, Janis, Nick Drake, Black Sabbath, Kraftwerk, Gentle Giant, Van derf Graaf Generator, Faust, Amon Düül I/II, Tangerine Dream...and 60s girlie groups. And most stuf from the 50s and 60s. And 100-year-old bloos... OK, gotta go. I'm off to Peru/Bolivia via Amsterdam and Atlanta tomorrow, 45 days... /Old (62), Swedish fart
LOVE, ALWAYS. Been listening for 3 weeks now, obsessed. So much tragedy. Mary Anne Ganser died from an overdose, aged 22 TODAY (March 16, 1970)! And there was a third sister Ganser, Gail, who didn't get old (1957-2009), and the Weiss brother (babysitting George, d. 1998) didn't get very old either. Elizabeth (Betty) was supposed to be the lead singer - and sang here while Mary mimed on TV. Mary sang on their 2nd single though, 'Leader of the Pack', late '64. Betty, 18, got pregnant in 1964, took a break and returned after 8 months in June '65. She's the only one alive now, aged 77. As always, they never saw any money, but they made a couple of comebacks. /J, Sweden ♥
@@MrDomin099 It's Betty singiíng, and Mary miming? No...but one of the twins ask her "Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?" Confusing, since Mary sang on the 7" which they are miming to... And that Robert Goulet guy from various TV series, like 'King of Queens'. Didn't recognize him. And whoever that Lloyd Thaxton guy is, he sure is ignorant, and he can't imoprov either...
Always believed he was Canadian. What a relief to know he's not. Just kidding. He was a guest on What's My Line and wasn't like what I thought he'd be.
❤🌹🌺🌹 RIP Mary Weiss 🌹🌸🌷🌹♥️ Jan. 19, 2024.

@@ians2726 Yup, George (d. 1998). Gail was sister #3.

First of the so-called "Bad Girl Groups."
Bad girl groups were bad, but they weren't evil, lol.

I love them. So great.
Absolutely love this group! So talented!!
Absolutely the best Shadow Morton artists ever! They were so bad girl genius ❤
RIP Mary we all still love you!
The great and timeless Shangri-Las!
They had great songs and hits. New York City Girls ❤!
Oh yea and Walking in the sand was so dope❤
No disrespect but geez...this comes across like a comedy skit. From the goofy faces, bopping up and down on the bike to the "look out, look out" haha
The clown on the bike was an awful choice, but that's not the image the song conjured up during radio play.
Yep tracking problems with the squares on the screen by using a video tape, it is amazing this is here.
Love Mary Weiss the most accomplished member of the group..her later solo albums were great!
Just curious why Mary's sister, Betty Weiss was sometimes with the group but other times not?
Reading up on the net, Betty was an original member but dropped out in October 1964 to give birth to a daughter, she came back in June 1965.

Originally betty was meant to be the lead singer. . .the rest you know
@@MrDomin099 Yup. Their brother took care of her, but did you know there was a third sister Weiss, who also died early? Check my Discogs updates!
was that Bob Hope on the bike?
oh no Robert Goulet!
Always believed he was Canadian. What a relief to know he's not. Just kidding. He was a guest on What's My Line and wasn't like what I thought he'd be.
Great recordings -wished we had better qualities.
Mary Weiss on Lloyd Thaxton show: CUTENESS OVERLOAD!! ABSOLUTELY IRRESISTEBLE!!!
My freinds and i used to parody the Shangri las . I used to sing Marys lyrics . We were called The Baguettes. It was not seroius .
is thatbactually Betty? they say Betty but I thought that was Mary?
