One of the most interesting things that has come out of the LIV split is what gear those guys are playing now that the sponsorships are gone. I've noticed some interesting choices, like Phil using a LAB putter and how many guys choose PING products without a sponsorship. You get some insight into what gear a pro really likes, instead of who's paying them.
Their sponsorships aren't gone. Some may have lost them but most are still affiliated to the same brands as before.
Bryson using ping until last weekand and he's not a listed sponsored player for them . I do believe there are a few Pros using gear they aren't paid too. As far as the big names go in liv. I don't know forsure

It looks as if LIV will have paid off their clothing/hat sponsors, but clearly they still have show sponsors and club sponsors in the main.
Haven't seen many of them diverge from what they played on PGA.
I would love to see a "scientific" series where Ian uses slow motion video to explain some of these things. I love to nerd out and I'm sure there's a bunch of viewers who would like to see that.
A good friend of mine works for LIV golf and has spent a lot of time chatting with Bryson. He says Bryson is a really good guy and fun to be around. I love him!

I’ve been watching a bit of Bryson on TH-cam and he uses strike location to shape his shots. He wants to keep his swing exactly the same every time. So in order to shape the shot he adjusts his strike location. When watching his TH-cam you will hear him say “I want this to draw so I’m gonna hit it on the toe”
He says this mostly with driver but I’ve noticed him also do it with irons.
So I think this has less to do with trying to hit it straight and more that Bryson wants a swing we can hit exactly the same way every shot but still get the shape out of the ball that he wants.
Everyone focuses on his swing speed but in this case I think this is more about his single plane swing and him applying the scientific method to get repeatable shots that don’t rely on feel.
He’s dialed in every swing the same with repeatable changes. He knows exactly how far a 60 degree wedge will go based on the clock method to 15 minute intervals. He knows exactly how far his putts go based on how far he takes back his club. He measures everything precisely on the golf course.
So unlike most equipment that is designed to hit straight with off center shots, Bryson actually wants shape with different strike locations. This is why his equipment doesn’t work for regular players and not necessarily his swing speed which has been more and more common on tour.

And MOI matching. Single length sets are all the same MOI from the grip end of the club. There are huge advantages to this but you can match MOIs of standard set too.
ive always wanted to try this setup but i dont think the average fitter has the ability to accurately fit, swing weight, and loft each iron to the specs needed to have accurate gapping..

As someone who wasn't around during the old TXG days, I'm totally here for this type of video. It's encouraging seeing all the comments under the video talking about this is what TXG used to do. Keep putting out the technical stuff every once in a while. It's a super interesting watch.
Past few years I have really started to nerd out and get real into the equipment, science, how and why certain things fit certain people. You guys have really fed my want to know more and I love it. This was awesome. Keep it up!

At what swing speed should you consider a driver head to “too much” bulge and roll? Because I’m around 120 mph driver head speed which is above average but no where near Bryson’s.
The best part of Bryson's contribution to golf is the CLEAR separation between us mortals and a dedicated professional athlete. (There's a few players on the tour that make me think; "hey, maybe I can do that ...")
The physics in play for that level of golf are nothing but theoretical for the rest of us.

Players like "Bryson", Tiger, and Jack are a danger to the gentle game of golf. Moving the goal post of golf physicality at the elite level, often destroying their bodies in the process, is very different from those that focus on long careers of walking in the park.
currently gaming a older adams DHY 21 degree hybrid with the buldge/rolled face. not a super fast swinger but can feel it helps on off centre strikes!

Been using the krank fire pro 7.5 Deg and it's amazing!! Swing around 132 average and it's better than all I've tried so far. Very straight and ball speeds are incredible on monitor 🤙

I noticed the curve on my driver face as a kid and intuitively tried to figure out why it was like that. I thought hitting the toe or heel would cause opposite spin than it actually does. Based on the face to path youd think it would curve right for a toe strike for a righty, but bc of the rebound of the face opening up it emparts opposite spin and the thing i thought would make it spin right just gives it a slightly right initial start line. I honestly thought of this and thought why dont they have concave club faces? But i had the physics opposite

Ian, do you know what the iron lie and loft settings for the single length club design you talked about would be? I really can not figure out, via the science, if the loft or lie would need to be stronger or softer. Thanks

His Ping irons before the Avoda's had a 5i at 17* (my 2 iron). He wanted it stronger but the heads would break in the neck. 9i was 37*

I love my one lengths, I play a Radspeed set in the winter and Forged Tec set in the spring+. Golf never completely stops here in Tennessee, at least for me raised out west, these Southern dandies hang it up when it gets below 60. Shit, it's still shorts weather anywhere above 40. Would love to see a review of the Avoda "Same Length".
At BDs swing/ball speed, his shots are doing things us normal players can't fathom. Makes sense why he would want horizontal roll to help with miss hits. Love how he never stops tinkering and searching.
Thirty years ago, when golf transitioned away from persimmon, the trade off was diminished gear effect. It used to be a common part of golf.

I have an old Controller 1 iron that has a curved face and it does seem to shape the ball more than my normal driving iron.
Would be awesome to deep dive on Avoda irons and why Bryson’s irons are different from production set available from avoda.
Questions:
What iron ball speed is gear effect on irons effective?
What loft does h-convexity make sense? Does it make sense of wedges short game?
Does trampoline effect (smash) of players or cavity iron contribute to need for roll and bulge or does a more springy face take care of some gear effect rendering roll unuseful?
What's key to any of the things Bryson is working on it involves his swing speed, which very few if any of us actually have
According to TPI research, a 1/2” off-center strike horizontally will cause a +/- 2.6 degree effect on start direction, which may result in Gear Effect depending on the 3:1 Face-to-Path relationship determining curvature. For ball speed lesser than 150mph (ie. club golfers), unless the off-center strike point is more than 1/2”, and the Face-to-Path delta is larger than 3 degree, the compensation from Gear Effect may not be noticeable even for a Driver with Bulge and Roll. For any iron, given that off-center strikes are usually lesser than 1/2” toe or heel, coupled with CG being close to the Face, Gear Effect is probably non-existent even for lower lofted clubs with lofts >15 degree.

My understanding is that the gear spin is created due to the horizontal difference from the CG of the club. It is not to do with the head moving in one way and the ball moving another. I know the PGA teach it this way but I believe this is incorrect.
On impact the ball wants to move towards the CG. When you strike the ball out on the toe, the ball wants to move towards the centered CG. Thats what creates the spin axis tilt. On a center strike, the ball is horizontally aligned so no spin axis tilt is imparted. By the same token, the CG position relative to the face impacts the back spin. Think low spin drivers like the SLDR. The CG was very farforward and low. The ball gets struck and is pulled towards the low CG, countering a little the loft creating backspin. (note CG of the head also impact the shaft so there is more at play interms of backswpin) The distance the CG is from the face also makes a difference. The bigger the distance the more the effect.
The reason irons don't need to counter this is that the CG is always very close to the face and that the ball can never get that far away for the center. In both cases the effect is so minimal.
I totally agree that as speed increases the effect on the spin axis tilt, and that for the majority of people there is absolutely no point in having bulge and roll.
So what would a slow swing speed produce? I assume that over corrects those bad shots off the heel and toe.

Did Wilson explore this concept in the 1980's with their model 1200 ge irons? They had an entire line of gear effect clubs introduced at the time. Those irons were the first set I ever played. However, as a new golfer then I couldn't feel any potential difference in those irons versus other conventional brand models.

I really don't understand gear effect. When my club face is open the ball slices. So how does having the face more open on the toe make toe strikes go left? I don't get it.

Woods and hybrids have bulge and roll as well. It would be more pronounced in the mini driver because it is a larger head and would impart more gear effect though.
would yall ever do this same review but with toe and heel strikes that are more dramatic and lower swing speed like the average golfer? I see your impacts and most of those are all places id be ok with hitting.

Its not deflection that causes the gear effect its CG placement and reaction forces caused by the moment arm. This is why you want the CG lower than the strike point to create backspin and not topspin ... its just the same thing in the left/right axis vs top/bottom
The bulge/roll compensates for the gear effect spin, by starting the ball off to the right or left, bringing the ball back to center line with a draw or fade.
Yeeesss! Go deeper, you have the audience for this. Even if you make more in depth videos a side channel. Love nitty gritty details.
So, increased energy delivered to the ball due to faster swing speed results in a more pronounced gear effect, because there's more deflection on off-center strikes? The added roll works to move the start line further from center to compensate for the increased gear effect?

Bryson us single handedly why I hit as well as I do. I'll hit 330, 340 easy on the course 2, maybe 3 times, in the fairway. I have been playing 4 years. Golf needs his approach, and his tenacious propensity towards innovation.
Can you do a test on same length irons
There isn't much to say that others haven't already
You lose some distance at the top end of the bag due to shorter leavers which can be offset by slightly stronger lofts. You are more likely to hit the centre of the face due to the slightly shorter shaft
You can gain distance in the higher lofts due to the same thing, such is a reason why Bryson has so many wedges. Inverse to the longer irons, you may find that you can't find the centre as much due to the added shaft length but that is offset by you not swinging the short irons as hard every time.

in theory, i think this test is absolutely right. However, at least for me personally, if i were to hit the heel with an iron my face tend to be more open, vice versa with toe strike. Reason being that i want solid contact. My ball tends to fade when i miss it out of the heel, and it doesnt have a leftward starting line due to the face that there isnt curvature on iron's clubface. I'd love to test out irons that does have face curvature to test the theory myself.

it would be interesting to see what different iron tech brings to this discussion. For example, I'd expect most (all) classic blades to act as you've demonstrated. Cavity backs are likely to have more variance, but not enough to warrant the complication. What about the foam-filled game improvement irons played by a person with poor head control and decent swing speed? Food for thought...

There are lots of things you can learn and use from Bryson’s game. But, his clubs are unlikely what you want to replicate unless you have a ton of speed like him.
Sort of agree however, till a set of irons with either a positive or negative bulge is available, you never know. Interesting to learn more.

If Brysons bottom 3 wedges were not one length and his putter stroke wasnt so dictated by his leading shoulder (which can fatigue) he would be sooooo much better

Bryson plays his wedges at 6i length? I feel like you’re right about that being a hindrance. The benefit of the 6i length clubs is really for the 2i/3i/4i/5i imo.
I was thinking that about his wedges. It’s a massive advantage to have a 35” lob wedge in terms of accuracy. I think his one-length clubs are like 38” or 39” which must be so difficult to control the club face on pitching/chipping strokes.
His putting actually improved tremendously when he switched to arm putting, so I don’t think that’s his main problem though he’s obviously not the best putter either

I actually had no idea why the driver face had a bulge and roll. I figured it was that way for some important reason but never thought o ask why.
To bring your toe and heel shots back toward the center via start line. Sends heel shots left so they can cut back and toe shots right so they can draw back. At least that's what I've been told.
Seems like the same idea behind the eleven golf hybrid irons set.
I agree that our equipment will not take as much as the LDC equipment can. I am 63 now but when I was younger I had to replace my TaylorMade driver every 2 years. Broke my Titleist driver before the 1st summer was over.
So if I'm understanding correctly: Faster club speed benefits from more bulge & roll?
If this is true, could we say that the opposite is also true: Slower speed would benefit from less bulge & roll?
Do golf companies vary their bulge & roll amount already? For example: "Women's drivers" that are targeted at slower swing speed players. Do they have less bulge & roll?
Has anyone compared the amount of bulge & roll across OEMs? Which companies have the most? Which have the least?
Could the amount of bulge & roll eventually be a customizable option, similar to the flex of a shaft or the loft of a club?
All tech aside, they are a nice looking set of clubs.
Would a better example have been hybrids? Do they have roll and bulge? Has Bryson gone full bag of hybrids that look like irons?

Bryson is the most interesting player in the game at the moment, he was also the best towards the end of last year along with Hovland, Bryson needs to find that form again for major season, Scheffler doesn’t win after April historically so the door will be open soon 🚪
