- Last night I went to an opening showing of the new Bollywood film Jawan. Here is what I thought.

He is struggling to enjoy the movie. He is trying hard to get more subscribes and likes. Such a cringe movie. Just 5 years back Bollywood fans and critics were making fun of and looking down on south mass masala movies. Now they are praising jawan movie[Which is a mixture of many south indian masala movies] and making it an all time blockbuster. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂

Majority of the critics who reviewed on RT are SRK bhakths. They were the one making fun of south mass masala movies. Now they are praising the movie as it indirectly targets the present government. You can just take a look at the review history of these so called critics. The remaning critics on RT are budding youtubers looking for more subscribers. May be a blind bhakth like you should learn to handle criticism.

I saw the main actor in another Indian movie earlier this year called 'Pathaan', and I had a blast with that 'RRR' is one my favorite movies, and 'Brahmastra: Part One' was a fun and an amazing 3D experience so I will be going to see 'Jawan' later this weekend.

In December, the director of 3 Idiots is coming with his new movie "Dunki" starring "Shah Rukh Khan", it is a social comedy and is poised to be one of the best movies (content wise) considering how great the director is, according to the director SRK is the best actor he has ever seen (due to things SRK did on the set) so ya i hope you see that opening weekend.

Jawan and RRR are, in my opinion, the proudest gems of "Masala" Indian cinema that the world deserves to know about. Peak Bollywood Masala action. 🔥

Glad you liked it 🙂 witnessed the magic of my childhood crush Srk 🥰 last night in a packed hall amidst the cacophony of whistles & cheer was something else 😬
A lot of the aura behind the movie and the cause of the love that it's getting is due to the lead actor - SRK(Shah Rukh Khan). If you aren't aware of SRK's legacy - his rags-to-riches story, his humility, his wit, his charm, and his struggles of over 3 decades to become one of the (if not THE) biggest movie stars in world cinema history - this movie would feel like Avenger's endgame for a marvel noob. It's cool to look at, but a lot of the nuances and fun would be lost. Give yourself a couple of years with Indian cinema. Get to know about these actors and rewatch the movie, it would be 10 times more fun.
Consider watching the Malayalam movie 'Drishyam'. It's been remade into several other languages including Bollywood(Hindi), Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Sinhalese, Chinese..... etc.
The Bollywood remake has the same name. So please consider watching the movie in original language itself... It also has a sequel called 'Drishyam 2' which is also equally good... 🤌
Malayalam movies are more grounded and realistic when compared to tollywood movies and Bollywood movies... 'Jallikattu' is a Malayalam movie....But Drishyam is nothing like Jallikattu.. They are totally different in tone...
I would highly recommend you to watch 'Drishyam'
The thing about those messages directly being almost a 4th wall breaking and being directly told to audience, is that it worked. It worked because of the context of where the nation is right now. The audience needed it, they needed someone at the pinnacle of mainstream cinema to for once show courage and say things that people have been silently observing for some years now. That's why the style and those moments really connected with the audience here.
Jawan is the most MASSIEST. CLASSIEST. and SASSIEST role ever played by anyone in Bollywood .
Srk is not just a actor he is our emotion ❤️

People are enjoying the movie as a mass commercial entertainer, and rightfully so. It's just a fun time at the theatres. But for us SRK fans, this feeling is something else
This man has gone through so much in the last few years. People were like "he's done, he's lost his stardom, he should quit acting bla bla." He was silent this entire time. Then came Pathaan and everyone was silenced. That movie broke all the Hindi-language movie records. And now Jawan, which is just a treat for us. Atlee (the director) proved that he is an SRK fan and he worshipped his hero in the best way possible ♥
RRR was also my first Indian film experience, I recommend baahubali 1 and 2. They are big, epic films with amazing action set pieces and great characters. First one is a bit slower paced, I don’t think they’re as good as RRR, but still very enjoyable. They’re from the same director as RRR
this movie was crazy, lol our emotions were on a rollercoaster, didnt expect it to hit so much actual real world issues. definitely over the top but didnt expect less from Bollywood 😂, loved it! if your now getting to watch these movies youll enjoy A LOT of SRKs movie, dudes the goat for bollywood hands down.
I loved Jawan. It was meant for entertainment. It never promised art or something serious in the trailer. I loved the messages as they are pertinent to India and whole world to be honest at this point. But I understand why you are confused. Actually they tried something different with this film. The action followed by a message is a new thing for us as well. It doesn't happen..normally its one topic, one politician, one gangster...this one tried to break the chains if that make sense? I'd love for you to see "My name is khan" do a trailer reaction first. It stars SRK again. Set in USA based on 9/11 from an Indian muslim pov.
For Bollywood reccomendations, I would say
1. Dangal
2. Lagaan
3. Taare Zameen Par
4. Pathaan
5. The Tiger films
The first three are more serious, dramatic films starring Aamir Khan, the lead in 3 Idiots, while the next two are big action films, the first starring SRK as well.
They already liked way before since kal ho na ho they are fans of srk since then and they loved SRK's emotional movies if u don't know just search it u can get srk's vibe in Western people

i use to watch Shah Rukh Khan films as a kid a lot, you should see some of his old films when he was in his prime.
If you liked this one, definitely check out SRK’s Pathaan. It came out earlier this year and feels like a ridiculous 90s action movie, but in a fun over the top way.

These multi genre films are usually called "Mass or Masala films" in India. And people know the flaws that exist and come with the genre (random songs, emotionally manipulating scenes, lack of logic in action set pieces, etc). But, most of us go to watch them for the adrenaline high the film delivers. With SRK being the biggest star in the country, a film like this gives everything its supposed to give and more. Sort of hard to critically review in a way because of how most of these films will explode in box office numbers at the end of the day. Understood exactly what you said when it was hard to review the way a single genre film of hollywood can be reviewed.

I don’t know if this would count as an Indian film, but have you seen the movie polite society? It came out earlier this year. It has some of the fast pace action of RRR with a fun and weird plot

I think you should watch Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. It’s in the romance genre and it’s exactly what Bollywood is known for. Romance chaos about family, definitely would love to hear about ur thoughts

It’s great that your getting into Indian cinema. As a Canadian my dad always watched Indian movies since he grew up in India. Then he got me into it in the late 2000s ever since then I’ve been a fan and no matter what it be I see every Indian movie in theatre since Indian cinema is a emotion to me.
If you would like any recommendations here are some that I would recommend
1. Munna bhai(comedy and same director from 3 idiots)
2. Bahubali 1 and 2 (high scale action by the director of RRR)
3. Gadar 1 and 2(my favourite movie that deals on the partion in 1947 in a Romeo julliet standard with amazing dialogues)

I would love to hear your thoughts on the 'Dhoom' Franchise by YRF (Same studio produced Jawan and many other SRK films). I think that is the first indian movie franchise I recommend to anyone wanting to experience Indian cinema. YRF films are the gold standard for Bollywood movies.
Im glad you had fun watching it bro. This type of cinema is called " masala mass cinema". More closer to the gradeous hero type of movie closer to the likes of Hollywood did in the 80s with stallone and chuck norris. Its a movie genre in india and its quite popular.
This review video is a Huge W, i hope this film also gets the popularity like RRR among American and European audiences.

If you liked RRR I would strongly recommend the Bahubali movies (there are 2), as they are from the same director. I would also recommend Bajirao Mastani, which is a great historical drama, one of my personal favourites.
Never heard of it 😅 if it’s anything like RRR, I’d be willing to check it out…

Sean love that you’re reviewing Indian cinema now! I’m an Indian American filmmaker, my 4 sisters and 3 brothers live in India so I visit a lot and know the culture.
It is great that you are reviewing Indian films and that you’re liking them! Me personally, these kinds of movies are like the equivalent of the comic book genre here where it’s basically become redundant in my opinion. Now the fan reception isn’t like that, but as far as the regularity of the films it is if that makes sense. Why the audience cheered so much is b/c the lead - Shah Rukh Khan - is the biggest film star in India. In India actors are basically the equivalent of Gods - they’re loved and hailed as “the guys”. And Shah Rukh Khan is essentially the top 1-2 guys on the ladder there. In terms of star power- he’s basically the equivalent of what Tom Cruise is here, but even bigger. There was another film called Pathaan which starred him and a couple of other A list actors. The film was pretty bad in my opinion but became a huge success because of his star power. That’s basically how I feel about this film too.
As far as other movies to watch I highly recommend these films:

2. Sarkar
3. Gully Boy
4. Sardar Udham
5. Sanju
6. Baahubali (A Telugu film like RRR; not Hindi like the top 5)
7. Padmaavat

Jawaan is not that good. Movies with srk are very overhyped by fans so don't go with hype train always. About social issues which you feel were genuine it's because the drama is amped up very high and it's same in every movie😅.
There's a superhero movie named Krrish. Ig you can relate it with other holly movies. Other than that bahubali can be the one which you can like.

Good take. Mainstream big budget Bollywood movies are typically what we call “masala” movies - masala (mix of several spices) basically means a multi-genre films that blends action, comedy, romance, musical, thriller etc all in one and was popularized in the 70s in India. It’s supposed to appeal to everyone from 8-80, sort of family-friendly (no profanity or sex but okay with violence), and basically nothing too polarizing or niche.
When you view a masala movie, you just gotta go in with these expectations and it will play out just right. And based on your comments, you certainly do.

Well the movie which you will like a lot is of SRK which will come in December which is "DUNKI" which will put everything in perfect place + its a movie of Rajkumar Hirani who directed "3idiots". It will be perfect in all its core coz its Raj Kumar Hirani movie and its made for all type of audience internationally.
Yes Jawan is a movie which we Indians call a mass masala movie which turns theatre into stadiums.We celebrate these type of movies as festivals.

There are many real life references such as Eeram's backstory..... It was based on Dr. Kafeel Khan's exact story at an almost similar setting, even the actress herself, Sanya Malhotra, who essays the role of Eeram, was not informed about it, lest she refuse the role.....

Try Vikram 2 (tamil), Kaithi (Tamil) , Mrinal Murali (Malayalam), 777 charlie(kanadda), Kantara(kanadda) , Nachuia Kumpasar (konkani)., The last one dont know whether its available but its in my local language in Goa, India and is a loosely based biography of a Goan singer called Lorna whose voice rivaled the best singers in India in late 1960's and 1970's but her career went steadily downhill at a young age due to her illicit affair with a very much married musician

I think you should try watching ‘Pathaan’ if you thought this was good. It’s got the same main actor, and it’s just a super fun spy movie. Actually they’re trying to set up some sort of connected spy universe so maybe you can try the other movies too.
I will recommend Super Deluxe........it's an Inaurittu-ish drama with a masterful storytelling and amazing background score

People who are saying Pathan is a well made movie have really a bad taste of movies. Pathan was hell movie. Too much forcibly twists, 80s storyline, teenage( chappri ) look of srk with long hair. It was just SRK's stardom and nothing else. Stop the 🧢 by telling pathan a good movie.

This is a great review. Just like your RRR review. If you are trying to get into Indian films you have to start off with Baahubali The Beginning, and Baahubali The Conclusion - Directed by the RRR director. I'd compare it to Lord of The rings for your western reference.
Then you can jump into Kaithi and Vikram. They are in the same universe. And next month the third film Leo is going to be released. These movies are Jawan kind of high octane action movies but with more gripping storyline and characters, especially Vikram.
If you want to watch Horror, then watch Tumbbad.
If you want to watch suspense thriller then watch Andhadhun, Drishyam 1&2
