    I think Pony was a vastly different genre, almost shoegaze - bootgaze, if you will. This album clearly borrows so much from Elvis' catalog, and I love it, but i definitely got into Peck for the bootgaze.

      Came to say the same. I love the guy and have liked songs since Pony just fine. But I loved that Pony was like...A David Lynch western sung by the gay villain who's actually the hero. Or something. And I have been missing that vibe. But I'm glad to hear that he keeps gaining momentum.

      I believe the songs on Bronco are well written and super polished but I completely agree. Pony felt like a sad Western gay romance soundtrack with a surreal atmosphere. To me that's still Orville's greatest project.

      I think “Pony” was just bad. Like, it was novel which made it interesting, but the concept wasn’t fully realised until “Bronco”. You can watch the transformation in motion on the “Show Pony” EP.

    definitely not a perfect album, but i am obsessed with it. Love the campness and richness of lore. And I find the queer romance and melancholic cowboy energy just so fresh and moving.

    I was blown away by the massive improvement in singing skills between his debut and this album, as if Peck REALLY found his voice and gained a huge amount of confidence between the two albums. And I was equally as blown away and perplexed as to how Pitchfork could possibly give such a fairly dismissive review and somewhat abruptly end it by straight up saying can’t sing. You may not love his style, but the man is clearly an amazingly talented singer.

    • @herb_2
      @herb_2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Orville Peck has stated in interviews that he is trained to sing in a higher register and for Pony and his first appearances as "Orville Peck" revolved around the shtick of being this deep voiced country dude which was a fun challenge to stretch his range to fit that image. IMO on this album he just embraces his natural range rather than "finding it." Confidence to go there, I think you're right.

    • @cradio52
      @cradio52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@herb_2 that makes a lot of sense… there were frequent spots on “Pony” where he was clearly singing well below his natural range and kinda struggled as a result; the singing on that album is therefore pretty inconsistent. With Bronco, it does seem like he’s just gained the confidence to really let his natural register shine. “C’mon Baby, Cry” is done masterfully. Just gorgeous.

      @@polrua not sure of the Roy Orbison comparison on “Let Me Drown”… although I can definitely hear it with many of his other songs. OP has such incredible power in LMD, with some great depth & a bit of a rumbling growl that Orbison lacked. Love both, in their own way.

    I'm in the UK and Country is not really a thing, but I caught Orville Peck on a TH-cam channel and had to get this album. I love the whole package and am hoping he comes here to perform. The progression of his vocals is amazing - on Pony he reminds me of Smiths era Morrissey at lot, which I have no problem with at all, but on Bronco he has hit a point somewhere between Elvis, Cash and Orbison. A breath of fresh air in my record collection and sits nicely with my Glen Campbell 20 Golden Greats.

    The fact that Fantano doesn't realize Pony's vocals were a stylistic choice at 1:34 is shocking. I would dare to say Peck didn't work to improve his vocals; he could sing like that all along; he just preferred to sing in a more subdued manner on Pony. I think both vocal styles hold their utility, and I enjoy both of them equally.

    I really feel the critiques here. It’s good. I liked Pony, but didn’t love it. I like this, don’t love it (but I’ll give it time to grow). I do love him, though; I love the aesthetics. He’s a hot af, openly gay cowbow, so it’s hard not to… I just wish I loved the music, and I think it’s a certain lack of grit that is holding me back too. I like my country raw and outlaw, mostly. Why can’t I have my Peck, er, raw too?

He never really came into my European radar for Pony, but I started to see a lot more of him in the past 3 months with the onset of Bronco, and have dived deep into his stuff. I find everything about him refreshing and new, and perhaps because I am not much of a stickler for vocals having grown up listening to small independent artists most of my life - so that is less of an issue for me. I think Bronco is a solid album and I'm looking forward to my double LP arriving

    I think you might not be following indie country/Americana if you think there aren't many fresh voices besides Orville Peck. Peck is one of my favorites, but Paul Cauthen is doing country-funk fusion that's much more musically inventive than anything Peck does, and I think you might like the grit, twang, and big voice he brings on songs like Cocaine Country Dancing or Holy Ghost Fire. There's also Ian Noe, Gabe Lee, John Moreland, and many others who are doing things with a more traditional sound, but very well executed.
