I still have my Icom 7000. I prefer it in the mobile, although I have used it portable. My greatest experience with it was working A DX Expedition in the pacific on 20 meters. I was using a Tarheel screwdriver antenna at 100 watts. I got a response on my first call. I couldn't believe it. I had my wife get a piece a paper to scribble down the contact info. I was actually driving down I-5 going south bound from Portland, Oregon. Such an awesome rig. It will only leave my possession when I die or it dies.
Jason, Got one of the 706MIIG. won it at a Hamvention the year the IC 7000 came out. Had it installed in my 2000 GMC Sonoma using Lido mount. also had a LG antenna turner.
I run my ic705 using a RAM mount and a 30-W aftermarket amplifier. Got a set of ham sticks and they all work amazingly. No tuner. Mostly just do CW, leg strap mounted paddle and enjoy QSOs and hunting parks to and from work. Also have a UHF/VHF antenna and a duplexer for VHF/HF and can switch over to 2 m or 70 cm when HF is quiet. Finally I have a pistar that hotspots to my phone automatically permanently installed in my vehicle so DStar/dmr is always an option.
I have everyone of these radios. Is that bad? 😉 Love them all. Had to check because you are usually spot on Jason but the 7100 does NOT have a built in tuner. And as far as something you should have mentioned, the ATAS-120A is a great option for either of the Yaesu radios that the radio just supports out of the box. Maybe you are going to do a Best HF Mobile Antenna?
No it isn't bad that you have all of those - I have most of them. Yes I think I meant to say that the 7100 has a built-in sound card, but I said tuner instead. Not the first mistake I have made. Yes, a good HF Mobile Antenna video would be a great idea.
You’re absolutely right. I have a 7100 and that isn’t the first time I’ve heard someone say it has a built in tuner. It has a jack/socket for plugging in an external tuner. And the idea about a video on best HF mobile antenna is great too. In the video I could see he has what looks like a shorty Tarheel on his truck.
you included my favorites. I have an IC7100 in my jeep. I have an IC7000 as a back up and field radio. I also have a 7062g as a back up to my backups. with mobiles especially, antennas matter, if and if I had any suggestions, I'd say you need to do a part two for mobile hf antennas.
I have the IC7000 in my truck (I own two of them as, like you, I love them) I also have two IC706MkIIG. Why? Because nobody makes a "modern" mobile radio that does anything like these do and I am hoarding! The market is missing a HF/VHF/UHF "100W" flip-off front radio. Imagine a 100W IC705 but with a flip-off front and 100W - it would sell like hot cakes.
I remember when they launched the Kenwood TS480 at the Leicester Rally in the UK. The first day they had sold out by 10 o'clock in the morning. And the vendor had to quickly get more stock in for the following day. This radio is still very popular to this day and it's very hard to find a used one. Interesting video, all the best David M0DUU
Nice overview Jason! I have had an FT-857 and an IC-7100 in my F-150 and loved them both mobile. I now only have a vhf/uhf rig in my car, but, I use the IC-7100 as my primary station radio, and I have my first mobile rig, an FT-100 in my shop still providing fun out there. 73 - KF6IF
I would definitely buy a "IC7050" in the configuration you describe. I've been using an IC706MKIIG for over 20 years, mobile/base/POTA and can't find a current model that equals it.
Recently picked up a FT-891 and an ATAS-120A planning to mount in my truck to also allow for it to be removed easily to put in a manpack. Also picked up a 706MIIG waiting on the DM5AL separation kit alternative. Great list of radios.
I have been dedicated mobile for the last 8 yrs, started off the ICOM7000, upgraded to the Kenwood TS480SAT and is a great radio however the Yaesu FT710 install has been a game changer. I use Diamond mono band HFCL range whips and I have a unique spot I park next to the sea and that has been a big advantage. It is a tiny little peninsula and when the tide is in I have 340 degrees of sea water giving a huge enhancement both in receive and transmit. (plenty of evidence in my channel) I use RAM mounts to mount all these radio, exceptional mounts. Thanks for the video, hopefully work you mobile to mobile in the future. MM5AJN/M Duncan 73
Well done Jason. I love everything about the 7100 except for the price. I agree with you about the FT-891 - that's about as perfect a radio as you can get for 100 watt HF mobile that is compact. You are right that the navigation on the menu for the FT-891 can be tricky but as I've talked to other hams most of that will be during setup.
I have Icom 706 MK II G with their tuner but never used it. I ran the High Sierra HS-1500 MK II ( I had little board that you plugged in the back of the radio for tuning). Currently using a FT -857D with ATAS-120. Both are the best for me for the vehicles I used them in. ATAS-120 is ok but I spend more time putting the ball bearings back in the holes. I had a lot problems with the mounts breaking for the ATAS, but problem has been fixed. High Sierra was probably the best mobile antenna that i ever had. 80M was game changer. I like the Icom over the Yaesu and i had the separation kits for both of them. The Icom set up was sweet in my Silverado with a custom hitch mount for the High Sierra. There's a picture of it on my QRZ page, loved that set up. When I get a new car I ask my self where and how can I mount my mobile station. The best mobile station is what works for you.............73 N3LJS
Funny. I have so many of these. I bought a 706MkIIg while looking for the 857d. I found the 857d and it’s in my car now. I also have the 891 which was my first HF. It is in my POTA bag. Lots of good stuff here Jason. Good job.
You should review the updated 891 with a band scope and an internal tuner that resembles the FTM 500 Oh, they don’t make one do they. Well maybe Icom will take the hint. Let’s see something that will be a better option than a G-90
I used the ic-7000 as my first rig. Did everything. Used it for 2 years, upgraded to a K3 and it sat unused. Turned it on in 2017, and the power supply smoked. Moved, it was in storage, got it out and shipped it to WA for an Icom repair for $200. Good as new. Be careful with used rigs, check the website, and make sure they’re still supported.
I have a ts480sat in my work truck and an icon 7000 in my car with the video out going to my head unit lol. LOVE the 480 myself. Its great for having an antenna on the truck on one antenna input and i have the other with coax for portable use
Naive, first timer. So Cal area. I go to the eastern Sierras/Sequoias throughout the year. In addition family lives on both coasts. So to my question: Looking for HAM radio communications Mobil . I want my family on those different coast locations to also have that mobil radio. I need those radios to be able to communicate that way in good times and emergencies. So what do you recommend to this Newbie
nice radios. What I am looking for is VHF/UHF all mode. even AM and the 220 MHz band. the ones out now leave out the 220 band . when you find one with 220 band it's FM . not all mode. SSB/AM /FM RTTY /CW /digital . 2 meter AM is fun. nice range and better sound that weak FM which gets choppy. SSB works great 2 meters as well. 73's
I have the FT-891 ad the IC-7100. I lucked out on the IC-7100 with a good price plus a rebate from Icom. I think I got it for $850. I love both of them.
I had the FT-857D + ATAS120 in my car and I can assure you it's the very best combo for mobile... I had QSO's with Australia, USA, Japan....etc (WHILE DRIVING)...I live in Spain! Regards! EB5DQ
I have an FT-857D + ATAS120 in my tiny '98 Toyota Camry and have had an absolute blast with it! I only listen while driving though I have occasionally pulled off the road if there's rare station on the air. I have a CS800D under the font pax seat and the large screen mounted on a flexible stalk. The head for the 857D is mounted just above the large CS screen/head. I have a TYT 7800 2m/75cm mounted on the center console just under the AM/FM car radio. For POTA use I can quickly pull the radio from the trunk and slap the original head on it. I also have a battery installed for portable use. I've operated summer and winter field days for up to 8 hours from that battery!
Once the kids get older I am going to do pot with my dad’s IC7000 I inherited when my dad passed. I will never get rid of this radio. I have the icom backpack for it. So I’m halfway there
I hated my FT-857, there was so much issues related to RFI in my truck especially using the ATAS-120 antenna. I even tried other antennas, bonding the truck and more. I got rid of it and went to the IC-7000 and NEVER LOOKED BACK. I love the IC-7000 and prefer having one radio in the truck vs two radios for HF and VHF/UHF.
Still waiting on icom to come out with a remote amplifier for the 705, Duplexing, tuner, 100w HF, 50-60w VHf. Simply unplug the 705 as the head unit and go qrp portable......REEELLL NIIICE. Icom could take my money now! Love my 7000 tho. Thanks for the content!
Enjoyed the videos! Why is all the great radios discontinued?? Haha!! Enjoying all the videos happy birthday! I saved several bucks thanks to you!! Keep the camera rolling!!
I’ve been using an 891 for 2.5 years, 76/100 towards Mobile DXCC, running only 5-50 watts, SSB. (The ONLY time I wish I would have cranked it to 100w was when I had an iffy connection to a Japanese station from Pennsylvania.) The 891’s DNR for SSB is nearly useless, most of the time. Excellent for CW though. 73 de WB3CFN/m BUT…the “menu” system drives me crazy! I’d trade it in a heartbeat for a 480SAT because the buttons and knobs plus I’m a longtime Kenwood fan.
I've run 480 sat and hx, icom 706 mkII, ft891, ft857 and icom 7000 and 7100. Best for all and running right now for all band all mode is the icom 7000. I run with all radios the Tarheel II. The best strictly for HF was the high powered TS480 HX because of the extra power. Still the Icom 7000 is my goto mobile all day long, everyday. Great reports especially for working with Tarheel II. Hard to get the separation cable, though, for IC7000, now. Ft891 is good for strictly HF for new production. KJ4BAD 😊
@@Z28videogates two big issues. 1. It's design and mounting. Cumbersom 2. Power output due to alc design issue has tendency to cut back power out. See forums concerning this issue. Also 7000 head is smaller and easier to mount in limited space, and design of screen information is better adapted to tuning Tarheel. Add to that is a solid modulated 100 watts which the 7100 seemed to limit at full modulation due to alc design. Receive on 7100 is very good but matched by 7000. That's my experience. If only HF needed, FT891 is a good match and priced right.
I really appreciate the detailed answer. Regarding ALC issue I heard there is an ALC mod you can do but even the other reasons are good reasons favoring the ic7000. I like the 7000 display quite a bit too out of all of them@@williambingham2459
I've been an Icom guy for decades, but an FT891 w/ ATAS antenna system is TEMPTING! No need for an antenna tuner. Only wish the 891 had data capability built in w/ a usb jack although a Digirig will do the job. Icom needs to revamp the 7100 with a color screen and an affordable antenna system like the ATAS. It would sell like crazy to the POTA crowd.
As an owner of an 891 and 7100 both in my mobiles, the 7100 wins hands down. But it does not have a tuner as you said on the video. It does have the sound card buit in though which enables easy mobile ft8. And the rig also allows 1khz tuning via the vfo or microphone buttons where the 891 does NOT which makes the yeasu a bit annoying to use while mobile. The 7100 also has safety PTT Tune when hooked to an external tuner. It's also nice that on the 7100 you can see all of the meters at once. The 891 is simple and compact but I feel that the recieve on the 7100 is superior. Just my opinion though.
Not sure if it's been said, but he 706 original was HF-2m, but only 10W on 2, and repeaters had to be programmed using splits. Not too user friendly, but at the time, it was the only rig like it. I got one in 2000. The MKII added repeater offsets, and as you said, 20W on 2m. The MKIIG went to 50W on 2m, but only 20W on 70cm. I got that one shortly after it came out. The 7000 is still my favorite HF-70cm mobile rig, and I have 2 now. One I got shortly after they came out in 2006 and has been mobile from day one. My second is a backup/portable rig. IMHO, best radio in its class, as I personally hate the looks of the 7100, and can't stand a touch screen in the mobile (I have fingerprint OCD- LOL).
Just started studying for my general. The iCom 7100 has been kind of a pipe dream since before getting my ticket. I still really like it but compared to other full color shack in a box type radios it is way overpriced.
What would be great updates would be to have multiple faces available for the unit with a slide in/out mounting bracket. Let’s face it these radios are EXPENSIVE. A lot of us can’t afford to have several thousand dollars tied up in multiple radios for the shack and car. We end up having to make a choice between having one or the other. Or different types for mobile rather than shack. If the mfg’s focused on having a shack in the box that you could easily take from the shack and bring to the car and back you accomplish a lot. One place to program, one radio to learn how to use and maintain and minimize the rather huge investment needed to get into the more exciting areas of our hobby.
I would like your thoughts on the Alinco DX70TH . I just picked one up for a good price . I think it would've been a good choice for your list of the discontinued radio's !
The 7100 has always been the radio I want for my truck. I have a 891 currently, but its not installed in the truck, but more so my camping/carry rig. My elmer has a 7100, and he loves its performance, although he shares the view on the head unit and its design. It kinda limits the mounting options just due to its design. Other than that, its one that I am saving for to install in the new tundra. (My concern is how antennas will react to the composite bed...)
at 14:30 you state that the IC-7100 has a built in antenna tuner. I'm thinking that's incorrect. It can be mated to the AT-180 or AH-4, according to the literature.
Here's one out of left field, the Alinco DX.SR8 with removable face. It's bulky and doesn't have a tuner. I have not tried it mobile though as I have an FT891 with mAT30 tuner in my 4x4.
I have an FT 891/ ATAS 120 and FTM 200 in a generously bonded Ram 2500. I have a speaker, both head units and both mics all mounted on the Lido heavy duty cup holder tree with some modifications. K1DLA
That being said - I really like the FT891 because it's receiver is far better than the FT857. The filter is far better - almost comparable to my IC7300
I tried to find an 857 before giving up and getting a 891. People want a ton of money for the 857's in the us (If you can find them) and I've heard some being sold from ebay you don't want since most of these are programmed for Japan's HAM freqs only.
What would be your mobile recommendation to cover HF/VHF/UHF either in one radio or two radios and the antennas that would go with it/them. Going in a Jeep Gladiator for travel in remote areas Texas, Arizona, Nevada, etc.
I have an IC-7100 that I use as a base station. Just wondering if the remote control software that you can buy for the Icom radios (Icom RS-BA1 Version 2) is worth the price. I have found it on sale on eBay for $88.
Not sure about the 7100, but older radios like my Icom 7410 have limited functionality. I believe the 7100 and 7410 are from the same vintage, but the 7419 has been discontinued. The software display has way more controls than my radio will allow.
HF? or VHF/UHF? All of the Mobile Radios will work great as Home Base radios, you just have to use a power supply with them. That is how most people do it
@@HamRadio2 sadly, I'm not that familiar with ham. I've been researching it to find what would be best to get for a bit over a month. As many options on the radio as possible for him to enjoy. When he was serious about it last, radios were very expensive and we got hit hard financially at the time back in the 90s.
Have the FT857D in my truck for 7 years. Used with the Atas 120 screw driver antenna. Been trouble free until the zebra stripes appeared on the display. Very difficult now to source a new display board .
I was given an Icom 706, Gen.1 ? Still new, in the box. I don't have any HF antenna yet, so I have not used it. We tested it out at a field day, and it works great!
A friend of mine has one and we searched all over that radio and manual one day but never found a way to enable the built-in tuner. Conclusion - The IC-7100 is prepped for tuner use but does not include one internally.
Time to do some vehicle installation videos!!! Thanks for all you do for Ham! KI5VOY 73!

Yeah that is a great idea
Enjoyed the videos! Why is all the great radios discontinued?? Haha!! Enjoying all the videos happy birthday! I saved several bucks thanks to you!! Keep the camera rolling!!
Excellent question
My first radio Kenwood 480sat. Great radio. Seen them for $650. Easy to mod btw. If ya want a 200watt cb. :) MARS etc.
73 de WB3CFN/m
BUT…the “menu” system drives me crazy!
KJ4BAD 😊
Why not the 7100?
Picked up an FT-857D for $650. It’s in like new condition. Just need to figure out the antenna situation.
I'd like to find one of those myself.
You got a good deal for $650. I love mine. WB5NOE.
I use the 891 with the icon 2730 for uhf vhf.
I run an FT-710 mobile and love it. Definitely bulky but it fit and I made it happen 😂
Yeah that is a good radio
I plan on getting a uhf/vhf/hf mobile transceiver for my box truck and pickup truck for the simple fact I wont need multiple radios.
Beautiful dog Jason. ❤
Do you have a video for top 5 HF antennas to go with it or what do you recommend?!
Not yet but you're not the first person to recommend that, so I'll work on something
Here's one out of left field, the Alinco DX.SR8 with removable face. It's bulky and doesn't have a tuner. I have not tried it mobile though as I have an FT891 with mAT30 tuner in my 4x4.
What would you rather have and Icom IC-7000 or Yaesu FT-891?
The 7000 is an overall better radio but the 891 is newer with better filtering
I have an FT 891/ ATAS 120 and FTM 200 in a generously bonded Ram 2500. I have a speaker, both head units and both mics all mounted on the Lido heavy duty cup holder tree with some modifications. K1DLA
Yaesu ft710 is compatible with the SMB-209 mounting bracket, i used on my car and works amazing
Great looking Radios, good info tnx Man!
I run st 480 sat and I like it a lot I run a single band antenna
Well, I have 3 of these and a Tarheel ant. I need to get busy and get HF rolling in the mobile.
How do you feel about the Yaesu 991A?
That being said - I really like the FT891 because it's receiver is far better than the FT857. The filter is far better - almost comparable to my IC7300
I tried to find an 857 before giving up and getting a 891. People want a ton of money for the 857's in the us (If you can find them) and I've heard some being sold from ebay you don't want since most of these are programmed for Japan's HAM freqs only.
“Then when you are silent you are worthless.” King Agis’ reply to an Athenian who claimed that speech was the most powerful weapon of all.
What would be your mobile recommendation to cover HF/VHF/UHF either in one radio or two radios and the antennas that would go with it/them. Going in a Jeep Gladiator for travel in remote areas Texas, Arizona, Nevada, etc.
That's what I talk about in this video
Dog is adorable.. more dog please lol
Haha, she is my POTA mascot!
I run an ICOM IC-7000 w/LDG Tuner
Icom needs to make a 100w amp/tuner for the IC-705. The 705 would make an awesome mobile rig it just needs more power
Yes
Need 7300 in a 706 Sized profile.
Yes
Thanks Jason
What do you think of the Yaesu FT-991A 100W?
It's decent but not my favorite radio
I have an IC-7100 that I use as a base station. Just wondering if the remote control software that you can buy for the Icom radios (Icom RS-BA1 Version 2) is worth the price. I have found it on sale on eBay for $88.
Not sure about the 7100, but older radios like my Icom 7410 have limited functionality. I believe the 7100 and 7410 are from the same vintage, but the 7419 has been discontinued. The software display has way more controls than my radio will allow.
I want Yeasu to make some matching radios. specifically, the FTM-500 body in an HF mobile HF model.
I wish I can would come out with another 706 mark two G. updated version color screen those things would sell like hotcakes. What a great radio.😅
The Icom IC 7100 does not have an internal tuner as stated! If needed you would have to use an auto tuner such as the LDG brand auto tuner.
Correct
Best, I would say ft-857D.
No longer in production
Is the Yaesu FT-891 the most popular hf mobile radio that TH-camrs use??
I don't have a list of what other TH-camrs use
Is the YAESU 991a not worth a mention?
It would have to be Number 6? I would put it ahead of any of the discontinued radios.
Not really a mobile radio
Do you have any recommendations for a home use ham radio? Not for a car or walkie talkie style. Shopping for my dad. Thanks in advance
HF?

@@HamRadio2 Many thanks!
Just a FYI you messed up on the 7100 at 14:29..You said it does have the Internal Antenna Tuner but it does NOT have one..
Ok
Have the FT857D in my truck for 7 years. Used with the Atas 120 screw driver antenna. Been trouble free until the zebra stripes appeared on the display. Very difficult now to source a new display board .
Meter vs Frequency. How does one tell what frequencies are in each meter band width? I’m very new and studying for tech test.
Divide by 300, then find the Amateur Band that is closest.
300/10(meters) is 30. Our 10M band is around the 28-29MHz mark.
I was given an Icom 706, Gen.1 ? Still new, in the box. I don't have any HF antenna yet, so I have not used it. We tested it out at a field day, and it works great!
According to Sherwood Engineering the Icom IC-706MKIIG has the best receiver of the bunch, IC-7000, IC-7100, FT-857/897 and TS-480SAT/HX.
I haven't looked at anything that old, but having used one of those for a while I can say that does not surprise me
FT-891
Rumor has it that Kenwood is coming out with a VHF/UHF Mobile radio to replace the D710G. Built in Bluetooth, GPS, APRS capability and D-STAR.
The IC-7100 does NOT have a built in tuner.
A friend of mine has one and we searched all over that radio and manual one day but never found a way to enable the built-in tuner. Conclusion - The IC-7100 is prepped for tuner use but does not include one internally.
I see ham radio, I click. I see doggy, I click faster.

FT-857D was looking pretty good there but what's the point if it only does 60m that has some restrictions...ugh
Only does 60M? What do you mean?
@@HamRadio2 dis I read it wrong on Yaesu's website? The only HF band it does was 60m I thought?
No it's 160-10, 6 plus 2M/70cm
Definitely should've added the yaesu ft710
Not really a mobile radio...
My IC-7000 always gets unsolicited comments on audio.
Just recently put this in my F150 on a Lido cup mount. Is WONDERFUL. Just wished I had done this earlier. Robert KD4YDC
I'd like too know what one gets out the best
They're all the same, since they are all 100w. The 200w Kenwood should go farther, but it depends on the antenna, more than it depends on power
Except for Y, there are no 100w mobile HF new in an affordable package.
I think I should have put the new 718 guts into a mobile rig.
Not sure if the 718 is "new". It's the same as it was, just back in production
857 best radio ever
Good, but not best
No internal antenna tuner in IC-7100..
The Icom 7100 does not have an internal tuner.
Correct
