2nd degree is actually the more serious charge in New York than 1st degree. Learned that long ago from having an armed confrontation with two murderers, who were brothers, violating their New York parole when I was at UCLA ( fortunately I was smart enough to be backed up by some really big guys). They had turned a drug addicted coed into their whore and were squatting in an off campus student housing I was elected to manage. When I found out was 2nd degree murder really was in New York and that the LA cops couldn't be bothered, I ended up carrying a gun and watching my back for the next six months. Did get them out of the housing and away from the girl. Unfortunately she liked being a drug addicted whore. I assume she eventually came to a bad end. The lowlifes probably did too.

Probably saw, or heard about, the bonus money and tried to rip it off. Being an idiot he managed to blow the whole thing and panic. He could have stuck the gun in the guy's ribs, grabbed the bag and run off. He might never have been caught. Almost certainly not his first strongarm robbery. If they bothered to look he could probably be tied to a lot of other crimes. His atttorney told him to shut up because in today's New York "justice system" there's a substantial likelihood that he'll be released well before his 24 year minimum. Never confessing to the crime seems to help that.
