    Just want to throw this out there, part of the swept wing design is to keep the wings inside the mach cone of the aircraft. This way the entire wing is supersonic and it significantly reduces drag past mach 1. I'm sure there's more advantages and disadvantages but that's about all I know :P

    • @koc988
      @koc988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      It pushes the critical mach up so you have more control at higher speeds because the center of pressure is moved away from your control surfaces. It's the difference between your plane being uncontrolable at mach 1 or mach 2.5

      @N9GamingOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

  • @decus9544
    @decus9544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You should give the wings on your aircraft some implicit angle to allow for level takeoffs and lower landing and takeoff speeds. Same goes to The Beady Penguin. When doing this one must make sure that the centre of lift is not too far from the centre of mass, and must account for transient effects where the centre of lift will move depending on how fast and how high you are flying, but it allows for much more efficient aircraft design. Use FAR to tell you if you've achieved a wing angle that provides the best lift to drag ratio during level flight, usually it's about 5 degrees. I'd also recommend some airbrakes for more controlled landings, if you don't have a mod with airbrakes you can just use procedural control surfaces and have them deflect 90 degrees or so.

    • @N9GamingOfficial
      @N9GamingOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I will keep this in mind when designing some more aircraft in the next episode for sure!

    • @decus9544
      @decus9544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@N9GamingOfficial Excellent :) Just a few more tips then, when you're looking at the FAR logs:
      1: The pitch rotational moment line (I think it's yellow? Can't remember) should be slanted diagonally downwards like this \, i.e. with positive angles of attack it should want to pitch down and vice versa. The more slanted it is, the more intrinsically stable it is, but the harder it will be to turn.
      2: The y intercept for this line should be near 0, if it's high the aircraft will tend to want to pitch up horrifically the faster you go, if it is below 0 it will tend to pitch down horrifically as you fly faster (and thus probably plunge you into the ground immediately after takeoff!). Test fly every aircraft in a simulation before you build it, particularly to begin with; aircraft with implicit angles are much harder to get right than those without and a lot more engineering principles must be observed.
      3: Be sure to simulate your aircraft in FAR in regular intervals across your entire flight regime, I tend to do it in Mach 0.2 increments, for both the highest altitude that you intend to fly it and at sea level. Don't just test the highest and lowest flight speeds as FAR does simulate transient effects so e.g. when you're going through the transonic region it can become unstable (FAR has a cross-section feature to help manage this, use this to remove sharp changes in cross-section, it's in the final FAR tab I believe it was - the cross-section line doesn't need to be perfectly flat but the flatter the better). Swept wings help tremendously with this and also reduce drag and improve stalling characteristics at supersonic speeds, the higher the Mach number, the more swept they should be but this will reduce low speed performance and lead to a greater tendency to stall at low speeds, this link should be kept in mind: (www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/machang.html) as if you exceed the Mach number for your wing's sweep angle drag will increase dramatically and the wings will suffer various negative effects (mae-nas.eng.usu.edu/MAE_5420_Web/section7/section.7.3.pdf).
      4: Also be sure to test it in FAR and in simulations with flaps down and airbrakes out at landing speed (in the range x0.9-x1.5 for safety) as this can heavily impact centre of lift relative to centre of mass.
      5: The FAR lines will deviate to show stall, the light line shows flight dynamics during stall. This is vastly more important with implicit angle, I find a stall angle of about 12 degrees is safe. To be extra safe you might want your airbrakes at the back of your aircraft or a rescue drogue shoot to recover from flat spins which can happen if you stall out. To recover from a flat spin, point downwards using full yaw and once airflow is stable over the wings pull out slowly (not exceeding the stall angle).
      I have many more tips I'm happy to provide, Aerospace Engineer here :) If we're roleplaying just imagine I've stolen a bunch of research from TheBeadyPenguin's research department and defected to the US programme, Decusyev Kermanilov from the USSR ;D

    That was highly enjoyable to watch. I'm amazed how much better this looks than stock KSP, so I think I'll try to set up RO / RP-1 for myself.

    I just have to say, i really appreciate and enjoy the work you deliver with this Videos. It's Spot on and at times i feel like watching a Movie. The Thor Launch @53:45 flight to the moon, with the Background Music gave me such Interstellar (The Movie) Vibes. Can't wait for the next episode!
