    One thing I never got is Shepard didn't have to die. If you choose to destroy the reapers why get closer when you have a gun with unlimited ammo? So your bullets do slightly more damage? Because you enjoy the feel of fire against your skin? Did you think it was a moving target? Was it a personal vendetta against the thing? There's no good reason for walking up to the fucking explosion!

      I don't think it really mattered. You see the Citadel explode in the final cutscene anyway, so it was a choice between us seeing him die in that first explosion, or assuming he dies in the following Citadel explosion.
      Also, it makes it much better if you assume the unlimited ammo is just gameplay segregation. In universe, the gun didn't have unlimited ammo, we as players just couldn't be trusted with finite ammo in that situation.

      From what I gathered, BioWare needed 3 years to develop Mass Effect 3, but EA gave them 2 years because EA needed the sales figures from Mass Effect 3 earlier.

      I always don't get the total hate of EA. Sure, they cut corners. Yeah, micro Transactions. Yes, they squeeze the life out of franchises. But Capcom is far, far worse when it comes to gaming politics.

      Don't take the effort to port great games? Check.
      At least with EA, you have a wealth of games to choose from: FPS games, Shooting games, horror games, racing games, fighting games, fantasy games, RPGs, Sci-Fi games, etc. With Capcom, if you don't particularly enjoy fighting games, then Capcom is not the company for you. Both companies release games that can be broken at times, but at least EA has the politeness to tell you you're going to get fucked over. Capcom just doesn't care about the millions of us that decry Disc Locked Content. Fuck Capcom.

    The ending of Mass Effect 3 is a what happens when EA pressures a game to be released and they don't have enough time. I bet Bioware had an actual ending but they ran out of time and had to rework the ending to meet a deadline. The Mass Effect series is amazing until the last 10 minutes of it.

    • @Chico50445
      @Chico50445 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Then The Extended Cut DLC came out, and I agree with JeremyJahns I didn't get everything I wanted out of it, but it was enough to satisfy me. And didn't the actual ending they planned have to do with the over-usage of mass relays causing dark energy to go out of control destroying the whole space-time continuum? Which doesn't make much sense either, why would the reapers create the mass relays and then wipe out all these species for using them?

    • @KevinKoolx
      @KevinKoolx 11 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Again the ending and reason for the Reapers just doesn't make sense. You can even make a friendly alliance with the Geth and Quarians which totally contradicts the little boy saying machines will always revolt against their creators. I haven't played the DLC yet but that is because the ending ruined all motivation to play it again.

    • @Chico50445
      @Chico50445 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      KevinKoolx Just watch the extended cut endings on youtube and/or Angry Joe and JermeyJahns's videos on the DLC, that's what I did before deciding I'd re-play Mass Effect 3.

    • @Xelpherpolis
      @Xelpherpolis 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SnakeEater866 That's partially true. It wouldn't have destroyed the space-time continuum, but the imbalance of dark energy caused by the use of Mass Effect technology would've caused all the stars in the galaxy to age a lot faster than they should have. Haestrom's sun in ME2 was actually supposed to foreshadow this plot point.
      Harbinger has a lot of little taunts and battle quotes that he says whenever you kill the Collector that he's "assuming direct control" of. One of them is something along the lines of "You cannot stop the great darkening" which was supposedly a reference to all the stars in the galaxy going out.

    • @jayr5277
      @jayr5277 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SnakeEater866 I'm personally convinced that even with the "dark energy" ending, the ending to Mass Effect 3 still would of been flat out silly (So... You guys created the Mass Relays and discovered that they have release Dark Energy that controls the Galaxy... Can't you just turn them off? Or destroy them yourself (since, logically, they would know how to safely deconstruct them...)? No... No, harvesting is the only way? ...Da fuck?) and the Indoctrination Theory still would of came about since it would sound like the Reapers were lying.
      The Reapers' motivation should of been left vague; Finding out the Reapers' motives, contrary to popular belief, was NEVER a goal. The goal was stop them. It adds more horror and dread if you don't know, exactly, why they do what they do... And for the love of god ANY kind of "noble" goal is just stupid.

    Reaper's motivation: We're robots who are going to kill you every 50,000 years so you don't get killed by other robots. Because organics will always create robots who will destroy them (cough...Geth & Quarians).
    If you haven't already come across it, I'd recommend the MEHEM mod if you didn't like the canon ending.

      great stories dont have fairy tale endings.
      All roads are flawed, all roads leave pain. Much like the decisions you make in life. There are no perfect solutions, only decisions that the bravest amongst us shoulder the burden of making, and, more so, live with the consequences.
      Most objectors hate the ending because they dont understand it so I will try to explain.
      The reapers represented the "ultimate solution" to humankinds salvation, To kill off advanced species before they could develop dangerous AI that surpassed reaper technology and wipe out all organics. (Effectively making the reapers the "shepards" of mankind, beautiful storytelling)
      For countless cycles, time after time, this has been the solution to keep the threat of universal destruction at bay. No organic has been able to best them since there inception, presumably billions of years in the making. Until now.
      for the first time, an organic, shepard, was able to best the reapers. The reapers, the "shepards" of the galaxy had been dethroned. No longer could they hold claim to the future of the galaxy. The decision for humanity's future now rests with commander shepard.
      Shepard has before him 1 of 3 paths. No path can be perfect, because humanity in and of itself is not perfect. One path may lead to the galaxy and beyond being destroyed while one may allow humanity to live in peace throughout time. It is impossible to know which path will lead to salvation or destruction.
      This is the ultimate ending. This is the ultimate choice that not only you as the player has made up to this point, but any being in the history of this fictional universe has made.
      This decision, and the consequences that follow, now belong to you.
      If you think the ending doesnt make sense because "everyone would starve", you're missing the bigger picture. This isnt about any crews you brought together, it's not about joker, liara or anyone on the Normandy. every choice, every sacrifice, you've made up until now has been to get shepard to this point. Those people you've met, the armys youve assembled all of it was to get you to this one point, this one decision.
      The entirety of everything in existence is at risk and you, the player, hold this decision in the palm of your hand. You wanted your decisions to hold weight? Bioware literally let you decide the fate of EVERYTHING IN EXISTENCE.

    The thing I hate about the ending is how they just make Shepard nod their head to whatever the God Child says. Especially when Shepard themself before this confrontation proved the God Child's circular logic wrong... repeatedly. What happened to the Shepard who looked Harbinger straight in the eyes and said "Maybe you're right. Maybe we can't win this. But we will fight you regardless! Just like we did Sovereign! Just like I'm doing now! However insignificant we might be. We will fight. We will sacrifice. And we will find a way! That's what Humans do."? What happened to the Shepard who when they met the unstoppable force they pushed back?

    Just finished playing the trilogy. Always wondered why people hate the Mass Effect 3 ending. Now I know why. I chose the destroy ending only so that Shepard could live. If Shepard was able to still be alive in the synthesize ending, I would have chosen that since that seems to be the noble, life lasting and peaceful ending.
    In the Destroy ending, you may destroy the reapers but you kill all synthetics like EDI and the Geth and like the blue kid said, future generations will build synthetics only to repeat this.
    Assuming control of the reapers could be risky considering that it may control Shepard eventually like it did with Illusive man.
    The synthesize ending seems to be the better ending but it would have been a perfect ending had Shepard lived in that ending. I mean, humans could coexist between the synthetics like EDI and the Geth. Not to mention that the reapers help in rebuilding life back again. Synthetic ending + Shepard living would have been the best ending. Hands down!

    • @Darkus1155Blogspot

    • @Camelotsmoon
      @Camelotsmoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Synthesis came out of nowhere; sure the illusive man was trying to control them, but the entire time we were trying to destroy them. Plus I mean Shepard saving the geth and the quarians, and how Edi and legion develop as characters kinda give the middle finger to the dues ex machinas logic, and they die because of this kid.
      The control ending is interesting to me, destroy is what we were trying to do the entire time, and the way it was done was bullshit; the citadel DLC is the true ending to my story since this shit exists. I feel like when I shoot that conduit and die, my Shepard woke up next to Liara in bed at the end of the citadel DLC (Shepard was having nightmares the whole game).

      ins't this depressing? imagine if they got the ending right, if everyone like it, man i can see the spin offs that would have been made, one investigation/adventure game with garrus and liara maybe even with kaidan or ashley as protagonist(so you chose one of then to play, if you choose one the other is dead to the story line), a stealth with thane or kaidan as he is the commander of the biotics division the special force, or even a "beat then up" action on FP or TP telling random stories of jack, wrex, samara and grunt, after or before they meet shepard, would be awesome seeing than having badass moments against pirates mercenaries and cerberus, but we will never nothing of this because EA/biowere screw up the ending, they make a game that you see the ending and want to throw everything away

      It's not worse. Indoctrination is a mental attack on Shep by the Reapers. It's not a dream. The concept of indoctrination was set up in the first game and was a theme throughout all three games. So please, tell me how it's "worse?"

  • @mrspaceman2764
    @mrspaceman2764 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So yeah, the last 5 minutes are really lame. The issue with focusing on this is that the previous 49 hours and 55 minutes are absolutely wonderful. The whole game is essentially one giant 3rd act for just about every story arc the player guided through their play through of the first 2 games. I thought the game was pretty amazing and set the proper tone throughout as the galaxy devolved into smaller and smaller corners of safe harbors. Yeah, I wish the game ended with the beginning of a thousand year war but it looks like we might be getting that with ME4.

  • @EldritchAugur
    @EldritchAugur 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Jeremy Shepard does live if you pick the destroy ending with enough galactic readiness. The Official Collector's edition guidebook given to us from Bioware says Shepard lives with that ending.
    And as far as I'm concerned, that absolutely confirms the indoctrination theory. That means that Shepard would have survived the explosion of the Crucible and The Citadel, then survived MOTHERFUCKING SPACE. Then survived burning through the atmosphere and hitting the ground at terminal velocity. Buuuuuuullllshhhhiiiiit.
    Oh wait, Shepard has experienced this before, in the opening of ME2, when he, you know, DIED.
    Sure it's easy to think that the Indoctrination theory is just a desperate attempt to understand the ending, but this piece of evidence is just irrefutable.

    He said all the things I was thinking a few years ago when I first finished the game and still think right now. It would have been better if they made a paragon, neutral and renegade ending. Paragon: cliché happy end with reapers dead, no mass relays destroyed, synthetics still alive, shepard getting a medal, listening to politicians talk for hours and some romantic last moment with their loved one, whoever it is they dated. Renegade: destroying reapers, mass relays, all synthetic life, commander shepard dies too and that's it. The crew will be ignored in all this. Fast forward a few centuries and there's this random school teacher at the end who teaches a history class talking about Commander Shepard and how he/she was the most controversial person ever in history. Neutral: I dunno. Letting Reapers go, show a peaceful rebuilding scene on different worlds, Shepard getting along with his crew. That scene fades out and there's a scene of how Reapers attack again, 50.000 years later. Sigh. This'll never happen.

    I think after playing the same character for over 100 hours (since each game is around 40hours) I actually wanted a happy ever after ending. At this point what was even the point of the paragon/renegade system. For me the best ending would have been a fully happy ending for paragon Sep (he/she lives and everyone lives) and for renegade Sep the ultimate sacrifice (he dies every1 else lives) since even renegade Sep was a hero, an ass but a hero.
    Oh well... that's how it ends in my mind :')

    1:13 "...because you did everything right in the game" - the point of Mass Effect story structure is that there are multiple ways to handle a situation / different choices / responses. Because of this, doing "what is right" and doing "what is wrong" is not a standard that can really be used IMO, because the "right" and "wrong" of the game is determined by the player and the choices they make. Is it "wrong" to not do the Grissom Academy immediately, leaving a character to an unpleasant fate? How about the Geth / Quarian conflict resolution?
    WITH THAT IN MIND - how do you create an ending that will not create an artificial standard of right and wrong, possibly "penalizing" certain players who made certain choices? I think the ending was always fated to disappoint because of this. The ending we got (which with Extended Cut and the Leviathan DLC makes a lot of sense to me now), was an attempt to please everybody, and ironically, because of the very nature of the Mass Effect franchise IMO, wound up (initially) pleasing almost nobody.

    After my first play through, and seeing how it all ends. Now that I knew that my choices didn't matter, and my chosen love interest (Miranda), ended up alone despite my promise to not die. I played a second time, and when I got to the sanctuary mission, I chose to go with Miranda's sister being saved, but Miranda dying, along with the chance to some day having a family with Shepard dying with her. After her death, my good Shepard, went total renegade, because he didn't care anymore. That's how depressed the ending, made me. I thought that maybe Shepard lives, retires and lives happily ever after, with Miranda at his side, while him and Garrus talk about the good old days. When Shepard and Garrus talk before the final mission, they both mentioned that they would like to retire from a life of saving the galaxy, so I thought maybe that might happen. But, after seeing the ending and realizing how fucked up it was. I decided to say fuck it, and have good Shepard turn bad, and has a death wish for the rest of the game, because the love of his life died. Well at least gets his Bioware forced wish in the end. I know Miranda couldn't get pregnant, but they could always adopt. Damn it Bioware, fix the endings so that the game ends the way we wanted.

    I think your rage is the point of this game. The story is a straw man against humanism. It doesn't matter that we think we're the galaxy's savior and that we think we know how to solve the reaper problem. In the end, if we're doomed, then we're doomed. And we're probably doomed.
    We're supposed to be angry. It's a kick in the nuts, just like such a realization in real life would be. Learning that choice doesn't matter, even though we always thought it did is supposed to be disappointing.
    The ending's twist is a philosophical change from humanism to fatalism. I thought it was worthwhile.

      this was pretty much what i realized as i was playing the ending recently for the first time. In life, we have a shit ton of choices. but we cant really choose when to die. mass effect pretty much slapped us in the face with reality. like yeah you did this and that, but tbh guy, it doesnt matter. you really dont have a choice in how it plays out. granted, doesnt change the fact that 16 different endings should have been 16 DIFFERENT endings. a clear GOOD ending, maybe sheppard convinced the ai to work with him or something. unrealistic, but then again, being a pure paragon, with maximum survivors, and maximum war effort or w/e should convince "God" to help save us, where as my half assed, renegade for life,punch ppl in the face would have gotten the ending he deserved. shrugs. it took me weeks to accept that such a huge part of my life was over. i do think mass effect was the greatest trilogy ever. game movie whatever. it hurt to end..angry happy whatever. kudos

      Zing Freelancer i see your side, i remember being half way through ME2 and having 38h in that one game alone, after finishing all 3 nearly 100 hours or more, and then you give me an ending like that, i chose control of the reapers thinking i could have quick repair of the relays for transport but apparently the citadel, reapers and i go to a corner of the local cluster and open a casino , but it deffinatley felt like my choices of the 3 games made no end game difference other than which one or two surviving crew members come out after joker (surprisingly no broken bones) walks out, (and seeing other endings the destroy synthetic life has no affect on EDI or Liria), and despite my ME1 ME2 krogan mission choises they did not supply me with grunt in ME3

      Zing Freelancer I'm replaying the ME series right now. Just re-met Tali in ME3.
      The story is great, some issues but it works, the character interactions are great. The gameplay is great (barring ME1).
      The ending sucks.

    I personally think the ending was bad for many reasons listed already by many people. If some of you are happy with it, fine.
    To me, it made no sense.
    Take another example of a movie you all probably like : Star Wars.
    Ok, just imagine that kind of ending for episode 6 : Luke meets the Emperor, he doesn't fight Dark Vador because the Emperor only gives him three options : die, die or die (red, blue or green lightning color). Luke dies by the end of the Emperor.
    Then you see Leia and Han on a planet you don't know and you don't even know why there are here nor what happened to the rest of the crew.
    Staff roll.
    Would that make sense?
    NO.

    • @NoktynGaming
      @NoktynGaming 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to say it but the story to the entire Mass Effect trilogy is a lot more detailed and intricate than that of the story of all 6 of the Star Wars movies, they are hardly comparable. So of course what you said made no sense.

      Dedal Donnager and that’s stupid. Part of choices is to have an ending where there’s a good/best outcome. Dragon Age origins had it and me 3 should’ve had it too. Only being able to achieve one outcome further proves that the choices never mattered

    Just a quick clarification, Shepard's crew run from the effects of the crucible because of what is mentioned in the game "we do not know if such a big gun will only destroy the Reapers, or both of us", and the only one who decides and knows what will be targeted is Shepard. Organics and Synthetics are targeted in Synthesis (the point of sacrificing yourself, adding an extra target to the crucible, because since Mass Effect 2, Shepard is both organic and synthetic hybrid because of the reconstruction), Synthetics on Destroy, and the Reapers on Control.
    So, I consider the Synthesis ending the best just because of my choices on the rest of the game, in Extended Cut you see destroy ending is the Paragon one (chosen by Anderson by the Shepard's flashback) and Control as the Renegade one (chosen by the Illusive Man in the flashback) and the Synthetic neutral (more Paragon-ish for me) in the way you don't have to doom both.
    I let the geth to live and made peace with the quarians, as I see that destroy targets all synthetics, I didn't choose that, as pointed by Shepard, should everyone gain freedom of choice, just the organics, or everyone except those transformed into Reapers? I choose everyone, organics, synthetics, the Reapers and the Crucible (as it is an AI) should both have freedom from the cycle and also help rebuilding everything destroyed and share the knowledge from past civilizations and the tecnology from the Reapers themselves.
    I romanced Liara (Male Shep), so I figured it out, in synthesis every life in the galaxy becomes "networked" on their knowledge (like the Geth), and she wanted to know everything she could on the Protheans, as the Protheans are in fact, part of the current Reaper form, I gave her unlimited knowledge about them, their civilization, tech, and etcetera. In some way this also freed her from being the Shadow Broker.
    Also, I made Joker to seek relationship with EDI, so Destroy was not an option (EDI's name appear on the Normandy's memorial on Destroy), and for one, I enjoyed that Joker finally made true his love with the ships from the Alliance (one of them atleast).
    And to make Legion sacrifice worth, I didn't destroy the geth, and also Mordin, since Wrex and Eve now can co-ordinate with every other Krogan the reconstruction of Tuchanka. About Garrus, I don't think there is much to be said, other than finally enjoy with Tali (without her suit, whooo) in that beachfront in the quarian homeworld, the Citadel is supposedly reconstructed on Synthesis and there is no threat of total extintion of organic life since it does not exist any more.
    Pretty much, the best ending in that way, plus everyone is now inmortal. I only feel guilty for not be able to "undo an eternity of mourning", sorry Liara, but anyway you would have lived more than Shepard anyway, probably 6 times the 150 years of the humans in that era, or more.

    Ironic, I love the ending for the exact same reasons you hate it. You’re no longer in control, you’re not getting that happy ending you want, you spend your whole game getting your way that when reality finally hits you in the face, you hate it. To me that’s beautiful. You’re engaging with forces far superior to your own, you have no choice but to agree to the terms and conditions given to you. What we want and deserve is irrelevant and that’s what adds to the magic of the ending.

    • @rob7216
      @rob7216 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure how to feel about it yet. My war assets bar was completely full, but apparently a few hundred points shy of my Shepard surviving the destroy option, which is what I picked on my first play through of the series. The fact that he doesn’t survive left me torn. I had built such a strong bond with Tali through all three games that she became my driving force to want to kill the reapers and survive. So I could be with her. Also to be with my squad mates that I’ve bonded with through our journey. Not only that, but I only felt comfortable destroying the reapers because I proved I could bring a galaxy together for a greater cause, so I felt like I could take the chance of being able to stop the inevitable chaos that the star child warned about if the reapers were destroyed.
      I don’t feel like I hate the game, or the developers for the decisions presented to me, just sucks that I thought I did enough to survive and get the ending I wanted. In that sense I feel incomplete in my journey. However, making a few different decisions here and there could’ve got me the ending I would’ve been satisfied with. The fact that I’m going this in depth with this comment shows how great the series is even if you weren’t satisfied with the ending. Now think to yourself, how many people do you think die in real life are satisfied or would be satisfied with their ending? I like the way you summed it up though. This comment comes a day after I beat the Legendary edition and all I can think about is this game and how my Shepard is dead, and how that’s bugging me lol. He deserved a chance to create his own life. Pass along his genetics. That bums me out that Tali had to put my name on the wall as a casualty of war.

    I lost all my love for Bioware because of this game. I was so psyched, ready for 20 radically-different 10-minute long endings. That was what we wanted, and that is pretty much was they were promising on records. What I got left me so sick with disappointment that I have not picked up ME 1 or 2 since then. They were my favorite games until I got 3. Multiplayer was not asked for, but they shoved it in. They included Kinect, even though the game was totally playable without it. There was so much they missed, and so much unneeded. Sorry, Bioware. You were gold. Now, you are just another (EA-owned) developer.
