This is a discussion topic video about the fourth generation of videogame consoles. This will be part one of my nine part mini-series. This will be a general video about almost all of the six consoles, the Turbografx 16 (PC Engine), Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) plus Sega CD and 32X, Super Nintendo (Super Famicom), SNK Neo Geo AES, Philips CD-i, and Pioneer LaserActive.

It was Sinclair behind the Spectrum. Out of all those home computer types (Spectrum, Amiga etc) the only one I ever owned was the Amstrad CPC464+ which had a tape deck and a cartridge slot. I've still got an Amstrad GX4000 and a whole 3 games for it!
If anyone's interested, there's a movie similar to the Pirates of Silicon Valley called Micro Men that looks at the rivalry between Sinclair and the BBC Micro.
The 4th gen was my introduction to gaming in the early/mid nineties too. Like you Adam, the Mega Drive and Dreamcast are my two favourite systems.

I wanted an Amstrad GX4000. Almost got one in the UK when I was there last year. Had the money...just didn't have the luggage space. Le sigh.

I remember you saying in one of your vids. The games are really expensive now. The two I have (not counting the pack-in game Burnin' Rubber) are two of the more common ones, Switch Blade and Pro Tennis Tour. I never see any games out and about, only on eBay.

The Commodore CDTV is as much of a console as the Philips CD-i. You can add a keyboard and a floppy drive and use it as a computer, but they're not needed for normal use.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  9 ปีที่แล้ว

If you say so. Most people consider it a PC/console hybrid. Though honestly I don't really have enough information on it to positively state either way.

AdamKoralik when you talk about the Sega Genesis are you going to talk about the "Blast Processing" Sega touted which whether or not it was true, the Genesis's clock speed was 7.67 MHz compared to the SNES's 3.58 MHz.... However, everything else the SNES outperformed the Genesis in. but man... now i wanna go play some classic mario and sonic games, maybe some zelda too.

This is my favorite generation. Of them Genesis is my number one I sunk an ungodly amount of time playing games like X-Men 2 Clone Wars, Shining Force, Dune Battle For Arrakis and Dungeons and Dragons Warriors of the Eternal Sun among others that were Genesis exclusives.
Turbografx is my number two as my uncle had one and later on a cousin of mine had one so I played a bunch of games back then. Only managed to beat 2: Bonk's Adventure and Military Madness. And played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons Order of the Griffin that plays very much like the Sega one. Then SNES 3rd.
I had a friend down the street who had one and while I loved the rpgs it wasn't my preferred style at that time (except Shadowrun) and the lack of turn based strategy games didn't help and was not a fan of D&D Eye of the Beholder, but I still loved it just the other two a little bit more.
And my God did I, and still do, want a Neo-Geo. I'm jealous looking at it.

Nintendo saved the North AMerican market, the European market was different. Yes COmmodore/SInclair/AMstrad went out of business, in the 90s, under the pressure of the Sega/Nintendo invasion. Without that invasion, the big war of the 80s, Atari versus Commodore would have been left alone (Amstrad in the background).

Another fascinating video Adam. This is probably my favourite generation as well.
The Commodore product you mentioned is called the CDTV. It was essentially an Amiga 500 computer, with a CD ROM drive. It was the forerunner to the CD32 that you covered recently, however it was never marketed as a console, but neither was the Philips CDi.
The Amiga CDTV, and the CDi we are both marketed as home multimedia set-top boxes. It was a market that a lot of companies assumed would be big in the early 90s, basically multimedia encyclopaedias, atlases, videos and study aids. As we know though, the market wasn't quite ready for it.

Out of all the gaming generations, I love the 4th one the best. SNES (also my first console) had Mario, Final Fantasy, while Genesis had Sonic, Phantasy Star. Neo Geo had KoF, and PC Engine had Bonk! The last generation where 2D was the main focus, and the last generation to have console makers (minus Pioneer and Phillips) be about games and games only! Also aside from the two I just mentioned, this was also the last generation where everyone used cartridges! Funny how gens later, I still go back and power on my SNES and Genesis on a almost daily basis!

This is probably my favorite console generation. I gotta be honest, I was like the most annoying Sega fanboy back in the day. But still to this day, I don't know what came over me and bought the SNES instead when it came out. Loved the console, but looking back on it now, I do think the Mega Drive was the close winner. The console that I absolutely idolized though was the Neo Geo AES. It was extremely rare in my country and it seemed more like an urban myth, few people knew about it and I didn't know anyone that had it at that time. I only saw one at a console club (videogame store) on display playing a Fatal Fury game. I grew up in the arcades so this console was like a dream machine for me.

This generation is my favourite generation. I started out with an NES & naturally moved to an SNES in 1994. Friends & family had Genesis, SNES, & even TG16, depending on who. What I liked most about the 4th gen are the polished environments and overall look, as well as even more imaginative gameplay that got going during the 3rd gen. Mario, Sonic (yes I know he came about here, but his games went from pretty nice in 1991 with the 1st one to legendary with Sonic & Knuckles at the end of '94), Final Fantasy, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, TMNT, & loads of others were great before, but became truly established household names by this point. Many games in the 3rd gen have a glitchy charm to them that I like nowadays, but that is mainly out of nostalgia. The 4th gen was where quality control really shows.
Something else I liked about this generation was that it was so interesting in that there were CD add-ons that were being pushed due to the multimedia craze that was also going on, like today we have 'Internet of Things' as the latest big buzzword. Everyone wanted in on the action, from Sega to JVC to Philips to Nintendo to Atari to Commodore to Sony to the companies who made 3DOs, everyone wanted to be on that next cutting edge & were hoping their formula was the one for success. Unfortunately, this also likely meant a lot of money lost between companies making all this stuff that didn't really succeed, & consumers whose' wallets were much lighter after buying some of these expensive add-ons or that crazy-expensive 700$ 3DO. I am confused about where this gen end & the next begins due to the timing of the 3DO & Jaguar launches - those came out right as Sega was pushing their Sega CD & their new 32X add-ons, but the PlayStation was over a year away in the USA, possibly 2 years. I think companies learnt from this generation that it is best to just make one console & focus on that.
The Amiga CD32 was the console version of one of their computers, & it probably would fit in best as 4th-gen, given that the games were still 2D for the most part. I believe there existed the CDTV as well, but the CD32 was more of a console than any of their other stuff. Still supported computer component slike their disk drives, etc, though.

commodore didn't go bust until 1994, the UK division actually left the company, got bought by a Japanese company in mid/late 1995, and the japanese company then went bankrupt in 1996 and with it basically the Amiga.

This generation is a magical generation, it's generation where if you're a kid and own one or both of the main two consoles you would be open to some of the best games ever made, in one side you got your Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Chrono Trigger, Metal Warriors, Super Star Wars Trilogy, Final Fight Trilogy, King of Dragons, Super Punch-Out!!, Knights of the Round, Wild Guns, Mega Man X Trilogy, Final Fantasy Trilogy, Star Fox, Killer Instinct, etc., then on the other side you got fresh new faces like Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic the Hedgehog, Vectorman, Ristar, Bonanza Bros., Splatterhouse, Outrun, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Warsong, Merc, Strider, Virtua Racing, Eternal Champions, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, etc. Even games that are based on the same thing are different like Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, Contra, TMNT, Shadowrun, Batman Returns, Shaq Fu, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Castlevania, Sparkster, Home Alone, X-Men, WWF Royal Rumble (SNES had Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect whereas Genesis had Hulk Hogan and Jim Duggan wtf), etc., it's just mind blowing how different and unique both systems are.

looking back, i don't understand the design choices of NOA. the famicom and superfamicom both look more aesthetically pleasing imo. unfortunately, i never got to play much of the genesis. i was basically a Nintendo only person until i got the N64...that's when i realized that Nintendo was not the only game console manufacturer in town. anyways, i look forward to the series.

Love it. First, the ZX Spectrum was made by Sinclair.
Second, I don't totally agree with you on your definition of video game console. The broad definition of it is a device that primarily plays video games and outputs its video signal to a display. You also add that physical media determines that it is a "true" console. Sure, I'm not totally against it; all the major home consoles use cards, cards or discs, but for the 5th gen videos, you included those minor consoles that aren't normally considered 5th gen consoles. Sure, those ones use physical media, but isn't the point to include the minor in general? Maybe that CDTV isn't a true console because it was primarily a computer, not a console. Maybe we could get some videos on the computer gaming side in these series. You could also lump the microconsoles together (highlight a few) because there are so many of them.
Third, or whatever it is now; I'd like to see some handheld game consoles series. (Those still use cartridges).
Last, I like that new haircut.

I can gladly say that I was one of the 1 out of 3 kids who was able to play both the Sega Genesis and the Super NES. Aside from the shitty bullying in school and the overtly transparent attempts by companies guided by focus group studies to appeal to kids by branding themselves as 'kewl', it was a good time to be a kid. If only I could relive that time period.

in europe we had a sega (genesis i believe) but cant remember it much....
after i came to US as a kid we got a ps1 and i was given an snes as well, childhood was pretty decent. Gotta love SMW on snes. Still my favorite mario game of all time, and the hacks.... ohhh the hacks, pretty awesome, even got a REAL sequel to it.

Discussion of connection among generations matches my description of progression in JRPGs. Golden age (snes and ps1) was when creativity exceeded tech. Silver age (ps2) was when tech was on par with tech. Dark/Present age has tech exceeding creativity.

The best innovation were shown by consoles willing to experiment with CD (and not pull out).
Even if I was to only consider sprite based games, the Mega CD pissed on the Snes.
Everyone knows for instance that the best platform game of the generation was Sonic CD.... Nothing Nintendo made in this gen came close.

I've never really played much from this gen. The most I've played is a few games I have for the mega drive and the mega drive compilation disk for the 360. There are probably so many great games I have not played from this gen simply because it was before my time. I mainly want to know more about Nintendo in this gen because I know virtually nothing about what they did in the 4th gen, which is partly to do with me only playing the handheld Nintendo consoles up till the Wii U which was the first Nintendo home console I actually got interested in.

Good vid man. I don't know lots here but I think the games crash was worse in NA than here in the UK. I had a sinclair Speccy and it was a great time for gaming, all through the 80s from what I can remember.
Obviously it was significant that Sega n Nintendo brought consoles out universally but the uk was a hot bed before these guys.

I think the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Turbo grafx 16 all have their "vibe". The Genesis gives me a feeling metallic soundtracks. The Turbo grafx 16 gives me a feeling of bassy sountracks. The Super Nintendo gives me the feeling of 16 bit music at its finest. There is something about the Sega Genesis's sound that pumps me up because most Genesis games I played sound like metal music. Have you ever played M.U.S.H.A on the Genesis?

In my opinion the fouth gen started the golden age of video games that lasted until the sixth generation. So roughly 1990 to 2005. During that era video games were the undisputed kings of pop culture. Sure video games today are still huge, sales might even be higher. But with the rise of the Internet, social media and so on video games no longer have the same status and other options have emerged. Back then gaming was pure and had a different mystique to it.

Hey Adam, I'm a little late to this series since I haven't had any internet for the past month, but I wanna shed some light of the whole European dispute of "Nintendo saved gaming" and what not.
I don't think the discrepancy is about what you're stressing, it's more the "gaming wouldn't be what it is today without Nintendo" cliche and all that jazz being overstated. Since European countries still had a healthy market for video games, the respective retailers and developers weren't really intrigued by Nintendo's exclusivity practices, and it doesn't seem a coincidence that as a result, the NES' impact in said countries wasn't anywhere near as big as what it was in North America and generally played second fiddle to the Master System. Obviously the NES' influence can be seen in a lot of platforms that came after it, but they do perhaps take a lot of undue credit for things that would have been a huge help, market share wise, to damn near anybody, lol.
Anyhow, good stuff nonetheless, I look forward to watching the rest of the 4th gen series.

If only nintendo completed their snes CD addon project and if only they allowed bandai to release their portible snes system, then the 16bit wars would,ve been complete, but since it’s not complete, i cannot consider this as the most exciting golden age era business wise,
I personally consider the 3th 8bit generation as the most and biggest golden age of gaming with lot’s of things happened with lot’s of turning points of changes,
    Same with the 6th gen.

Lol the Great War Sega dose what Nintendon't...the best part about Sega was they allowed blood and fatalities in mortal kombat while Nintendo said no, no blood none of that. Like it's a watered down port on the genises but you got all the great parts that Nintendo didn't have. I miss though's days great times.
