    I've read about doing the stuffing box in the water, but never saw it done until now. I need to do mine, but I'm going to wait and do it when I haul out to paint the boat next month.

      Yeah, it looked so scary! Our dripless shaft seal leaked last Fall and the amount of water that can come in can be frightening. They did a great job though and all worked out!

  • @BoatingJourney
    @BoatingJourney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I mentioned before, that last September our charter power boat WAS sinking. Our dripless shaft seal (that's the black rubber part to the left of yours) was pouring out water. The fact you replaced your packing while on the water - wow! Super scary, but we're glad you got it fixed and the pumps were working! Safe travels to the Bahamas and we hope it sells soon, so you can return back here! Cheers!

    Aubrey, I tie a rag around the prop shaft when I do my stuffing box. It greatly reduces the ingress of water, keeps the water away from where you're working, and gives you time to work on the stuffing box without rushing. You could get even fancier and stop the ingress completely but just slowing the water ingress is all I've ever found necessary.

    The last boat I had had a dripless seal--but in the one before I put a small sump under the end of the tube with a lip I made from some rubber taped in place--it dripped into a plastic box, in which I had fitted a float switch and a twenty dollar Rule bilge pump. The bilge pump emptied into a cockpit drain pipe. These seals are supposed to drip- a little-they are water-lubricated.

    It is interesting at the beginning of your video that as a female you think your wheel is too small and makes it more difficult to steer your boat. So Bigger is definitely better.

    • @steveholton4130
      @steveholton4130 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bigger is Better especially for low speed power maneuvering. Under sail in open water smaller is better as it gives a more positive feel of the boat. For open water sailing a tiller beats any wheel every time as long as the helmsperson has the muscle strength.

    • @glennedwards1449
      @glennedwards1449 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveholton4130 I guess it is a matter of leverage the larger the equipment be it tiller or wheel the better it is.

    • @SailingMissLoneStar
      @SailingMissLoneStar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair I also have a small rudder🤪

    • @steveholton4130
      @steveholton4130 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bigger the rudder the more force is needed to move it. The longer the tiller (distance between the hands and the rudder post) the less muscle is needed. With a wheel, there are mechanical advantages related to thee size of the wheel, the size of the AND the ration of the turns on the wheel shaft to the size of the quadrant on the rudder post.

    • @SailingMissLoneStar
      @SailingMissLoneStar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn’t have worked in this case there were precisely 4 rings cut to length to make a circle.

    • @derektaylor8598
      @derektaylor8598 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingMissLoneStar in my training it should be one length of stuffing or packing material cut to the diameter of the shaft and the next length of packing with the gap at a different position say 180 degrees around the shaft. This is so the chance of water seeping through the stuffing box or gland is kept to a minimum especially when you use a waterproof grease as a lubricant. The stuffing would never be removed and would only have more packed in behind as the previous stuffing is worn away. To have 4 separate lengths to make a circle is 4 gaps if I understand what you are describing and makes 4 potential leak points. And I would predict that trying to insert 4 smaller pieces while afloat would be quite a challenge for you and fun to watch for us at the other end of an internet connection.
