  • Taki is our 7 month old Lutino cockatiel. He is most likely a "she" but we call him a "he" anyways. His wings are uneven because of a botched clip job he had before we got him. Our avian vet has suggested simply letting them molt out and regrow because she can't clip them to match in the mean time. The clipped wing is overclipped and he also had many secondary feathers clipped as well. He will be fully flighted after he molts as we will not be clipping him again.
Taki did roughly 4 sessions of stationing/recall training shortly after we got him in late September, 2017. Then we took a break until recently to focus on harness training since harness training a bird can inherently help them learn stationing and recall. During those 4 stationing/recall training sessions it didn't seem like Taki was making much, if any progress in learning the commands but we kept trying anyways.
This video is from his 7th or so training session overall, and his third recent training session. His training sessions are usually around 10 minutes long and he trains one or two times every day, spread out by a few hours. On his 4th training session I introduced the "turn around" command because he kept facing the wrong direction and was scared to turn around on the perch due to his poor balance at the moment. The "turn around" command was intended to position him properly for recall as well as build his confidence.
By his 5th training session he seemed to fully understand the "station" and "accio" commands (his recall cue... #nerdalert) and "turn around". Now we are simply practicing those commands to make sure he has a firm understanding of what each verbal cue means. Soon I will be training him to do these tricks in areas he's not used to because he currently only understands the tricks in the context of standing on his training perch. In the future I will be filming his training progress from the very first training session to the training session where he has learned the trick so you can see the full progression and the potential pitfalls or issues I might encounter along the way.
Thanks for watching! Feel free to leave comments or questions below and I will respond to the best of my ability.

Hi, can I ask.a question? Does the verbal command "station" means he/she needs to go to the perch?

Hey! Is the clicker a conditioning and training toy? It’s nearly impossible to train my budgies I hope the toy will help.

Clickers serve to mark the behavior that is earning the reward 💖 They help to communicate to your bird what they did correctly with more precision similarly to the way that a pleasant "ding" sound in Super Mario tells the player they've done something that earned them a coin! With practice your bird will learn 💖
