while I did get the "omg wow are your eyes actually this green colour, so beautiful" comments I received way more weird treatment than compliments while in SK for a month. for example, I am super pale to the point where korean foundations are some of the only ones I can wear. but when I was buying the lightest shade 2 different saleswomen shaded me asking "are you aware this is the palest shade?" like, miss gurl, you're the ones wearing a foundation three shades too light lol and unlike you I was actually made to hate being too pale in my country. I guess they were just envious which is so strange to me, why would anyone want to be paper white.
I also had so many rude service experiences, getting straight up ignored at restaurants, getting snarky remarks for politely asking if they had lactose free milk etc. I've never really encountered such rude service aside from maybe Paris and I've been to over 30 countries. also in Busan this older bus driver didn't open the doors for me while opening them for every local, so strange.
while there were of course friendly people too, it was a day and night difference from the almost overbearing kindness of the Japanese. koreans are still extremely xenophobic and you won't get any preferential treatment just by being a conventionally attractive white person. of course white privilege still exists and they treat other ethnicities even worse. I felt like they only warm up to the foreigners who speak fluent korean which, fair enough, but I still expect just basic politeness especially since I went out of my way to be very polite and speak all the little korean I know out of courtesy.

If they look good, then we want to be a friend of them. Orelse they have to be dressed well or they got a good scent. And they should be english speakers. It may be related to the past when modernization was equated with westernization. In fact, it is difficult to think of the so-called modern era as separate from Europe. In that respect, Europeans are blessed. Of course, the center of such cultural influence moved to the United States a long time ago. However, Europe's influence in the historical context is still enormous. This is true in both positive and negative aspects.

As a Korean, I think I need some clarification on what he said. It's pretty normal for people from any country to have a better impression of people from countries with a higher standard of living than their own. But among fellow Asians, except for the Japanese, the image isn't so great in Korea. For instance, Southeast Asians often come to Korea for illegal marriages and as illegal immigrants, so their image is especially bad. People can be biased against anyone, and he claims that Americans face discrimination in Korea. But from my experience, Koreans prefer Americans as well.
If Koreans prefer only white people, it won't explain why Russians are not very preferred in Korea.

I'd argue his privilege is not even a thing in Korea. Sure you might get a few avg girls approaching you, and some people think that's a big thing. But if he plans on living there for 10, 20+ yrs he will realize those privileges don't really lead to bigger opportunites . So sure if you're in your 20's and you're obssesed with girls, you might think it's a privilege, but if you have bigger aspirations, white people are not privileged there.
