  • Dr. Marc Smith:
    Hello, ladies and gentleman.
I'm Dr. Marc Smith. I was going to give you a brief tip on if you have a dog with a luxating patella.
A luxating patella is the kneecap goes out of place. Lots of times, this happens in small breed dogs, and it'll go immediately in the inside.
What I'm trying to get ... The point I'm trying to get across in this video is when do you decide to do surgery.
There's different grades of patella luxation.
Every one of them affects your pet differently, but when do you do surgery?
You do surgery specifically when it causes your pet to limp consistently over time.
What happens, when that patella gets out of place, then your dog's going to hold his leg up, but when it gets back in place, he'll run around like he's normal.
A lot of those dogs, especially if they're small breed dogs, I don't recommend surgery.
Some of the larger ones, like this guy right here, we're getting ready to do surgery on, we would do it, but all patella luxations don't necessarily need surgery.
If it's affecting your pet's quality of life, then it's a good time to do it, but if it's not, I wouldn't worry about it.
If you want to know more pet health answers to your questions, then go to our blog at www.PETTAO.com. We've got tons of information just like this that can empower you and help you make the best decisions. Thank you for watching.

Thank you so much! I have a 5year old Maltese mix ,walks fine jumps up and down ,no problem. I can feel her knees sliding, always have. Shes never shown any discomfort. We walk every day. I can never go to any vets appointment without them bringing up surgery! It always angers me. I'm not willing to have them cut on my little girl as a preventative measure for future problems! It's reassuring to hear you say it's not always necessary!

I dont know if i should go to surgery, my vet said that she just need suplements but i dont think its getting any better. Although she is lighter than your pit mine is like 55lbs

My dads orange pom about 8 pounds has this and normally shell will pick up back left while running then one time I did see her hoping on the right and it went out and she just sit down so I picked her up. That's only happened once most the time it's only back left and shes still really playful and fetches but I'm worried if it's bad that she can't really run like a normal dog to get that good cardio in everyday. She's with my disabled dad so she stays by his side like a shadow and doesn't really like going out other than to potty or if he is outside with her. Doesn't seem to be in any pain though just a little discomfort when it pops out. She's only 2 years old so I'm worried if we should have it done or not and how much is the surgery normally?

Hi I have a 1 year old mini aussie. He had a luxated patella on the left side and limped here and there one doc said surgery and two said he didnt need surgery only vitamins for life. Then one day he was running and it got very bad he injured both sides and they said he has a cruciate tear and grade 4 luxated patella on the right and the left is mild luxated patella. The doctor said without surgery his leg will atrophy and will not get better. So 4500 for the tear and to correct his knee. He can hardly walk he can walk normal but then limps or falls over. The way he looks I feel he does need surgery but I didn't want him to go through that or I am scared he will ruin it I can hardly afford one surgery

My dog had left knee surgery (luxating patella) in 2016, the vet wanted to do the other knee 2 months later. I waited. A year later, I put him in for the second one, and the vet called me and said, for some strange reason, the right knee seems ok now, I can't luxate it anymore.
Check out my x-rays on my channel, the problem really seemed to have fixed itself after operating on one knee. I give Foxy fish oil, green lipped mussel powder, home grown herbs Centella Asiatica and Bacopa Monnierie, and (the vet uses it himself for his arthritis): Rose Hip Vital. And with the occasional course of arthritis injections, he is a very happy chappy.
Thank you for your video. It's not often that I find an honest vet.

Please, please let this be the case with my little Yorkie! Her right is a 4 (knee out of place and stays out), she has recently begun limping, walking with a strange gait and stumbling. Her left will still go in and out of position. I am hoping that by doing the right knee we can keep her left one from deteriorating further and hopefully avoid surgery on the left. You've given me hope. 🙏🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻

@@catpatrick3838 All the best! Making the muscles strong is super important, Natural Vet in Sydney told me that, and I've been to Vet Physios and got some exercises. Walking uphill super important, even sit stand on a slope makes the back muscles strong, it helps support the knees. He's 13 now, and still only on natural supplements and lots of walks. Good luck!

Hello. My dog went through this surgery, but his knee cap/patella keeps luxating. It's been 2 months since the surgery. When he walk slow, it's pretty evident how the patella keeps going out of place and snapping back to place almost in every flexion of the knee, when he jogs, it looks a bit more stable. Apart from that he has hyperlexia, just in case it needs to be considered. Is it possible that after a successful surgery, the problem persists? Or if the patella keeps luxating, it means that the surgery didn't go very well? I know it's a hard question over TH-cam, I just want some guidance, I'm getting desperate for the sake of my dog. Thank you.

Hi, I have a 1yr old cavapoo (4kg) that was diagnosed with grade 4 following a jump off our couch. Vet recommended surgery as last option. She’s completely active, and can sprint full speed in dog parks, jump, and even walk on hind legs. No signs of pain at all.
I dont want to put her through this surgery at all, knowing the high risks. How long will it take for arthritis to set in, and will it be too late to consider surgery if it does?

I really appreciate your honesty. When we first noticed something was off (lameness, limp) in our pom pup, we immediately took him to the vet. They took x-rays and told us he had grade two luxating patella. Told us he would need an immediate $3,000 surgery. Being the average mid-class american, we just don’t have that money on tap, so we declined. Two years later, we have him on supplements and exercise, to keep him in a healthy weight, he does just fine. There are some days when he plays a little two hard, but then he is right back at it again.

Hi Saul, the TPLO surgery (recommended for bigger dogs) for torn CCL is about $2700, $550 added to fix the luxating patella. That is getting her meds filled at my pharmacy for cheaper and we are already $400 in with exams/x-rays. The luxating patella alone would be about $1500 since you'd have to pay all the other parts of the surgery that are already included with the $2700. I also have a Pet Assure discount that my vet accepts. This is in the North Texas area, I hear it is more expensive on the coasts.

My toy Poodle can no longer pop his leg back in place... is he in pain or is it just a nuisance to him? he travels around quite well on three legs and can even run really fast.... I dont want to leave him in pain, but if it's not really hurting him, is he ok to stay like that? The money for the surgery is beyond my means right now, and he has rotten teeth also which have to be tended to and those are taking priority. Another question, if he isn't using the leg for a long time, will the muscles be damaged so that he may never use it again even if I can do the surgery later on down the line?
