Ouch. The other big one, as noted by Jay, those hard plastic vacuum lines in these early cars WILL absolutely fail at some point - and I think it's optimistic to expect to pay only five or six thousand pounds to replace them - unless you have a pretty friendly Bentley mechanic. I guess if you can find one that has already had them done as well as that suspension refresh, your only real worry would be niggly things you could probably live with - but otherwise at the age they are now, if they haven't had those things done Jay is right, you're likely in for a mechanical write-off at some point unless you don't mind spending more money than the car is worth to fix it.
Great content Jay. We have a facelifted Flying Spur in the same colour (Dark Nlue Somerhingorother) but Magnolia leather. Always an event to drive even though it's mainly for trailing the Grandkids around...the space in the back makes child seats easy and no kicking of the drivers seat from the little darlings. Had it a few months and it's my favourite car to drive. Tried it as a daily for a week and regal on country roads but the mpg was just a little too fruity to keep as such. Only had to replace a battery, which manifested as a nuber of electrical gremlins...all of which vanished when the new one was put in. The boot motor was broken when we got it and the £2k quote means we are happy to just lift it manually. For £18k it's great fun and looks the part on the grass at the Races. Great experience so far but my fingers are always crossed.
Oh, and we also had a 2017 V8 Gt in Silver. That car was excellent, after Bentley fixed an oil leak, and I preferred the noise it made. Slightly better fuel economy and a surprising capacity for 4 adults, meant it was a more usable vehicle. Prefer the Spur's space and presence though.
On my 2nd Bentley GT. First one was a 2004 and a money pit . Current 2008 GT speed. Fantastic car and no problems besides regular servicing . I give this guy his due very fair review
The vacuum pipe issue was present on 2007 cars. I know as I had a 2007. It cost £2300 to fix at a bentley main dealer. The first quote was £3990, only when I said I would take it to a specialist did they reduce the price. It’s not £5k as said in the video. Servicing at a main dealer in 2023 for an over 4 year old car is £700 for cheap service and £1100 for the main service. And there are plenty of very good specialists now who are generally a little cheaper but in my experience offer more of a detailed approach than the main dealer. So while more expensive than the average car to service it’s similar to others of the same class. I have a mark 2 GTC now and it is a better all round car, tempted by mark 3, but it’s lost some of the Bentley look and feel. Progress?
I had one when I was 25 years old. It's was in much better shape than this one tbh. They are beautiful vehicles. But theres a lot of bad ones out. All about the cars history with these. Low owners and full Bentley history is a must. I buy cars like this every 6 months or so. Sell them for the purchase price and move on. I add £300 per month to my available money to purchase new vehicles. Just hope I don't get a lemon. It's been nearly 10 years now, and it's been great. Currently got a 2008 f430. The only real cost is the service before I sell them on! Best way to drive amazing cars as a normal person, imo.
Here in the states you can routinely pick up a Continental GT for around $20,000, but the financial ruin is overstated. Its a big Volkswagen, and can be serviced at any Volkswagen dealership. My sister bought a used one and it hasn't had a single problem in 5 years.
@@strongereveryday2302 update heading into 2025? Does she still have it and what does maintain e cost per year or common things she gets serviced? How many miles does she have roughly and what year did she have? I’m looking at a earlier 2006 model
The original Mk.I Conti GT was not a looker. The front-end is bulbous and the rear end is anonymous with tail-lights that are neither round enough nor square enough, kinda ruined the bits in-between which I have to say is actually good. The Speed treatment made it slightly better, and the Supersport is even better still, but the Mk.II facelift brought so much more panache in terms of styling, and is a handsome car even today. Not a fan of the Mulliner Driving Spec wheels here, though. However, the Mk.I Flying Spur is just atrocious in design. My friend called it a bloated Suzuki Baleno Saloon. Mk.II is a lot more cohesive and the current Mk.III is even better.
Had a mk1 fir 3 years now, WOW, what a stunning car, headturner was a phrase devised especially for the GT, it's tempest great, all the chrome is black wrapped, massive 21 inch, black 6 spokes, hotspur red and black interior, only done 35k, still smells new, had a service done at a specialist, £800 THAT'S IT!!!, 5 and half hours to Mousehole from Derbyshire, got out feeling great, yeah it only gave me 19.8 mpg , but EVERY MILE WAS A SMILE. Spend a little more to get the right one or it'll kill you. Shall be getting a newer one on time as they are beyond great.
My dad bought a 2008 (I think?) Speed Coupe for about 35 grand a few years ago - he’s sold it recently for 6-7 grand loss but he wanted to own one as a bucket list thing It’s a pretty special car - I wasn’t THAT into them but having been in one, I think it has to go on my bucket list at some point ! You can’t really get any other car with that interior, presence and authenticity for this kind of dosh
The current model is more vibrant / sporty. > It’s best not to leverage happiness into place through the material world. Ultimately happiness has to come from within oneself.
Great summary James of a very good car. Brilliantly effortless on the motorway and straight smooth A roads on long journeys. I've had mine for about 2 and a half years. I took it to my local Bentley main dealer for it's first service and then to an independent specialist after that - the latter being both better and cheaper. Maintenance has been about £1.5-£2k per year. It's 100% better to go for one that's been looked after all it's life rather than a cheap one that you think you can bring back up to good condition. Also, if ever there was a car that needs to be used regularly it's this one - even letting it sit for a couple of weeks can start to throw up spurious electrical warnings. I've put mine up for sale now, but only because my kids are too big for the back seats.
I've had a 2007 Flying Spur Mulliner since Feb this year. It's one of the world's greatest cars. In my previous S classes, XJR, A8 etc you're totally anonymous - no one gives you a second glance. In the Bentley people stop to look at it, ask you questions & admire it. BUT, they can be a pain to own. It took Autoglass 10 weeks to fit a new windscreen - the original infra red coated screens are discontinued, so I now have brown tints side & back, and a green front screen. And if you need a new UK satnav disc, forget it ! Unobtainable. You can get parts for a 100 year old Bentley 3 litre, but parts for a 16 year old Flying Spur are getting tricky.
For mine, I'd prefer to pay a little more and have the DB9. Still achingly beautiful after all these years and the 2008-11 vintages can be had with fairly low milage and full service history. I know lots of people will day "repairs and maintenance" but I've had a vantage and that was pretty reliable. Maybe I got lucky. Ive driven the DB9 a year ago and it still has the capacity to thrill.
I have been driving my 2007 GTC in dark saphire and magnolia leather interior for many years and more than 100.000 mls all over Europe and I have never had any serious issues so far. It gets its annual inspection at the local Bentley dealer and that's it. Of course this costs between 3k and 5k, depending on wear and tear if you want to keep it in an excellent condition, but besides that I have never had to spend a lot on it. Its a great car and a lot of fun to drive, even at high speed with almost 200 mph on the German Autobahn. Mine has a chip tuning and comes with 635 HP and an enormous torque of more than 700 Nm. I would not recommend to buy a coupe for less than 35k € or a convertible for less than 60k because it definitely pays off to buy one in almost immaculate condition, if you can manage to get such a rare example.
In your dreams don't talk nonsense no way are you having an old 2007 Bentley with over 100,000 miles on the clock serviced by Bentley why I know you stated it cost 3,000 to 5,000 lies Bentley charges £799 for an interim service and £1,199 for a major service..Bet you don't even have a Bentley..Should write fiction novels
Yes, the interior is beautiful and feels special. And a big engine in a large car gives that “wave of torque “ experience. The body is pretty good though the rear details look a bit plain to me. But! I have sworn off VAG products. I loved my Audi and it was just a delight while under warranty. But it aged very poorly and suddenly, and didn’t love me back. The dealer loved me like a pimp loves a John. Then the independent German car service garage loved me when I turned my back on the dealer. I sincerely hope everyone who buys a used Continental GT has a rewarding experience. I’ll wave to you as you drive by.
@@spicynoodles11 Yeah this was worth double that back then. My mates brother in law works for them and was trying to sell it to me at their wedding. It was absolutely stunning.
@@spicynoodles11 This one was their company run-around and had hardly any miles on it, they'd decided to sell it and swap it out for the newest model and he could get me an amazing bargain on it. In hindsight it was stupid NOT to buy it!
I filmed the VW Phaeton being assembled in Dresden for the BBC. On the second production line Bentley GT's were also being assembled "for the German market only according to our PR handler. But we were not allowed to mention that!
Always liked the early Continental GT. Not particularly spectacular in any one area, but considered as a whole, it definitely adds up to more than the sum of its parts. I think it's glorious. I'm just not quite brave enough to dip my toes into the water. Nice dream though. Maybe that's where the Continental is at its best.
I'm probably very wrong but I like to imagine that when Tyler Hoover got one of these with a VERY dubious history that ended up being a total basket case a few years ago, it smashed the value of them and still hasn't recovered.
A dealer said a guy bought a new continental with an 8 cylinder, then when the 12 cylinder came out 6 months later, he brought his car (6 months old) with only 3k miles after paying $277k USD and they wouldn't give him $160k for it.
I could have had a brand new Dacia Duster and £30k spare to spend on other stuff. Or a new Tesla and a few quid for the electricity, but where is the fun in that. Get the GTC, summers were never this good before I got mine. Seems reliable after 3 years ownership. Can’t take it with you!!

£18,000 for a used Bentley? Considering what it cost new not that long ago, that should be a HUGE warning sign. How much will you have to pay to tackle all the deferred maintenance? Probably around £80,000. Even if you got very lucky and the car was well maintained, it will still hit you with astronomical repair and maintenance bills sooner or later. These might be beautiful cars, but let’s face it: Bentley and Rolls Royce are not known for Toyota or Lexus levels of reliability. I’m a mechanic and I can tell you from 33 years of experience that these cars are nightmares to work on, and the level and frequency of maintenance they require is something most people would consider too much of a hassle or too much money to waste. I You know the old saying: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”. You can find far better cars to spend your £18.000 on.
What are you on about man? This is just what these cars are worth. Their market value. You can be meticulous with maintenance and it will still only be worth £20k.
I understand your point but one of the reasons why these cars are so cheap is because Bentley produced so many of them. If they’d kept the production figures low it might be a slightly different story. Also Bentley went full on for the marketing drive at the time. Every footballer, rapper and reality star seemed to be driving one which probably didn’t help the 2nd hand values either. Lol. If you have tonnes to choose from it drives the second hand values down. A lot of them were also used as dailies so the mileages on some are super high. But yes for sure you need to have your eyes wide open when looking at buying something like this. However if I had to choose between a 2nd had Maserati or one of these I think I’d prefer the one with mainly VW parts. Lol.
I saw a Flying Spur drain thousands in repairs on the ABS system to the dealer trying to dispose of it. At the end of the day a simple fuse fixed the lot.
My Father owns a 2008 GT Speed and I remember he took it to the dealer for a service once it had only done 20,000km the cost was $1800, I looked at the invoice they charged $800 for 2 wiper blades, there was nothing wrong with the original ones.
Fair and accurate although I suspect the difference in handling you experienced between both cars was simply down to the fact car one was a Speed and thus much sharper and dynamic. Simply mega cars but you’re not wrong on running costs with a previous service and a couple of bits costing over £12K and having not have confidence in the franchised dealer outside of the UK cost-wise it simply had to go!
I’ve been lucky enough to spend plenty of time behind the wheel and as a passenger in a SuperSports convertible of this era and those cars are mega. Incredibly fast but more impressively they can STOP on a dime. The regular Continental I don’t see the value in - the S class and any RR is way more comfortable. Thanks for another great review!

A good friend bought a used one in 2008 and drove it till 2020 when he bought a 911 4S. As far as I know the car had 250‘000 km on the clock but he told me, every inspection was north of CHF 10‘000. I drove it once and must say it is a very satisfying experience.
I saw Flying Spurs are cheap now and thought, ooh i fancy one o those, then i saw WatchJRGo's video on his cheap salvage one and wow! He eventually gave up and he even had Bentley diags to help him, it was all due to ecu's & mildly damaged loom.
6:15 wich VW/Audi is the gear leaver surrounding from exactly? Never seen it… the face lifted mk2 GT obviously has the Audi A8 surrounding, but this one??
Those roads look very familiar. HM will be looking for an alternative test circuit 🙂Currently own a 2015 GT Speed Mk2 and it is a very special car indeed, the street presence and sense of occasion when out and about is quite something. The power delivery is also quite sublime. The Mk3 is another notch up interior wise.

If car manufacturers spend their time on making cars last and being maintainable and upgradeable, we could enjoy these things for generations. Instead we get electronics that break.
A combination of both. I have a friend who works for them, Chester is not far from Crewe. The problem is that at some point it will go wrong, that is when you find out that spares are hard to find (Boot Motors) and if you find them very expensive. Hence why neither my friend or myself have any desire to own one. Good luck to those that do.
Ran a 2007 one for a couple of years. Let me down at the end of a 2000 mile road trip through Europe, at least i was back in the UK and wasn't a problem. Cost was £80 for a sensor in the end. Really like the idea of another at some point... maybe the 4.0 GT S is a better option as a lot more shared parts with "normal" cars vs. the W12 and no big issues like the vacuum pipes under the engine?
I'm glad you mentioned the "footballer" image at the start. I've always liked the continental GT but I really don't look like a footballer (not even Accrington Stanley's 3rd choice goalkeeper) so I would never be able to have one. But things have changed. Footballers aren't tooling around in £18k cars, this is the price point for a car enthusiast who isn't rich but is doing OK, and is prepared to take a gamble. Tempting, very tempting.
Something which many people tend to forget this is a proper luxury car which costed more than £125k brand new. It's a marvel to own but only if you can afford the expensive repairs and maintenance, or else stay away.
I really liked this first variant VW Bentley Continental. I liked the looks for the reason you like it less. It's gentleness. I would not want such a complicated car, and the servicing expenses would not suit me. The only other post war Bentleys that I liked were the post 1945 Mark Six and the first 1950s Continentals with the Royce six cylinder in-line engines. Otherwise bentleys were made in Cricklewood before 1931! Nice to see one on the road though. Thanks. Best wishes from George in Herefordshire.

Tyres last 6 years max. Regardless of tread. Should be changed asap. Can be dangerous, look for cracking inside the tread and the sidewall. If lucky it's been stored indoors and won't have UV degradation. But rubber degrades with time. Sorry!
The person this belongs to given the channel they run already knows this, I guess when he phoned about the price for some new bentley trainers and everything else this car mostly likely needs to keep it running went fk that and sold it referencing what J said 3/4 of the way through "its most likely already sold" probably as seen. In the old days two types of people drove old bentley's , Old bankers and scrap dealers.
Most people probably drive on older than 6 year old tires. I wouldn't say they arr unsafe unless something in them has failed. Even when dryrotted somewhat. Obviously grip will be terrible but ESC and knowing the vehicle and tires limitations helps..
Call me a tight arse if you so wish...or wise....but I wouldn't touch one with someone else's barge pole, apart from the fact that they are rapidly developing a 'drug dealers image' around here on Merseyside now too. Seen several with blacked out front and rear windows being hooned around like 'Max Powered' chavved up Corsa. No thanks, but a very interesting vid. all the same
This is one of the very few cars that I think looks great on photos and videos, but not so great in person. Everytime I see one of these, I can't stop thinking that it looks like a cheap-ish crossover and not like a classy GT car. It rides fairly high and just looks incredibly tall.
Like my SL500, this type of car is a bargain buy, but you have to put aside a ‘repair pot’ of quite few grand and keep it topped up so that when something needs fixing (which it will) you have the money to hand. If you do that then you have luxury motoring for the price of a Ford Focus along with headturning looks and performance. Put a non aging plate on and all anyone sees is a Bentley (or in my case a Mercedes SL) and they are still head turners. For me, compared with paying a grand a month or more to a finance company and being hit by more than that a month in depreciation, it’s a great deal. 👍
Always have loved the Continental GT. But fear of long-term maintenance has kept me from taking the plunge. My alternate has been the 2004 CL 55 AMG. Easy to maintain, usable, backseat, plenty quick, but it seems the grass is greener on the other side. I still yearn for one of these British land yachts.

Only the peasants lift their own boot lids.
On my 2nd Bentley GT. First one was a 2004 and a money pit . Current 2008 GT speed. Fantastic car and no problems besides regular servicing . I give this guy his due very fair review
I think that some local businesses.need to start putting up advertising hoardings up on that S bend as you Jack and Harry use it all the time 😀
I recognised Harry's regular test run too 😃
Everybody got it from Top Gear, I remember Hammond push a 911 though it years ago. I use the road regularly, it's the B4437 to the west of Charlbury.
@@pauldorset2124 Same here.
Progress?
I also like the 2nd gen GT more. The interior of the 3rd gen is a big improvement but I don't like the exterior as much
Interesting that a lot of the scaremongering is simply that.
Would be a great topic for regular TH-cam videos
Here in the states you can routinely pick up a Continental GT for around $20,000, but the financial ruin is overstated. Its a big Volkswagen, and can be serviced at any Volkswagen dealership. My sister bought a used one and it hasn't had a single problem in 5 years.
😲
Has she still got it ? And is she single ?
@@strongereveryday2302 update heading into 2025? Does she still have it and what does maintain e cost per year or common things she gets serviced? How many miles does she have roughly and what year did she have? I’m looking at a earlier 2006 model
What do you mean big Volkswagen? Aren’t the part older and harder to source hence why so expensive?
My dad bought a 2008 (I think?) Speed Coupe for about 35 grand a few years ago - he’s sold it recently for 6-7 grand loss but he wanted to own one as a bucket list thing
It’s a pretty special car - I wasn’t THAT into them but having been in one, I think it has to go on my bucket list at some point !
You can’t really get any other car with that interior, presence and authenticity for this kind of dosh
The current model is more vibrant / sporty. > It’s best not to leverage happiness into place through the material world. Ultimately happiness has to come from within oneself.
Same my dad got an 08 a few months ago, he wanted one for 20 years
HAHA! Love the 'Beard Meets Food' callout! Are we going to see a crossover, maybe have Jay do an eating challenge and Beard drive a luxury car?
Who is going to eat all the pies
😂
12 year old tyres.. jeez. Car would be considered unroadworthy in Australia if the tyres are 10+ years old
Could have bought one for 30k a few years back.
18 is astounding!
There's been loads under 20k for the past 4 years
@@spicynoodles11 Yeah this was worth double that back then. My mates brother in law works for them and was trying to sell it to me at their wedding.
It was absolutely stunning.
It's ludicrous value for money
@ThunderChunky101 Yeah, I just meant in general there have been many for under 20k, obviously not the most desirable examples though.
@@spicynoodles11 This one was their company run-around and had hardly any miles on it, they'd decided to sell it and swap it out for the newest model and he could get me an amazing bargain on it.
I'm still annoyed that I didn't take him up on it. Me and my friend were going to go half/half on it.
We'd have run it for a few years and made a good profit on it.
… wasn’t the (rubbish) 8 cylinder released after the 12 cylinder Continental?
I could have had a brand new Dacia Duster and £30k spare to spend on other stuff. Or a new Tesla and a few quid for the electricity, but where is the fun in that. Get the GTC, summers were never this good before I got mine. Seems reliable after 3 years ownership. Can’t take it with you!!
Range Rovers and Bentleys are probably the reason a lot of former footballers and glitterati are broke after a few years.
I had a 2010 GTC speed....one of the best cars, i actually want to rebuy the same model again, they are just incredible

I
You know the old saying: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”.
A good pre purchase report and keep up the maintenance schedule and these are no issue.
If you're a mechanic with a lift and have great intestinal fortitude - and you're a gambler. And you get it dirt cheap. Maybe.
You are spot on. I was lucky enough to own 2 Bentley's, before eventually moving up to a RR Ghost. The Ghost was in a different league.
Super content over the last few months James. Enjoying.

Im in The process of buying a 2007 GTC been looking around for a few years now and think ive found the right one , amazing cars for a long trip through europe
My first Bentley was an R type in 1960 between then and now a couple of continentals and one convertible ending up in 2017 with a GT never had a problem
That dismal puddingbowl styling with token Bentleyisms (grille, brightwork) overshadows the rest of the car.

I'll stick to my town car. Beautiful ride and great handling. I just suggest where i want it to go and eventually it will amble in the proper direction. Even a lane change is an adventure
Panther platform or older?
Saying it’s got great handling then explaining that it doesn’t is hilarious
If car manufacturers spend their time on making cars last and being maintainable and upgradeable, we could enjoy these things for generations.
Instead we get electronics that break.
Then they wouldn't make any profits. I agree with you but
A combination of both.
I have a friend who works for them, Chester is not far from Crewe.
The problem is that at some point it will go wrong, that is when you find out
that spares are hard to find (Boot Motors) and if you find them very expensive.
Hence why neither my friend or myself have any desire to own one.
Good luck to those that do.
Great review, love that you, Jack and Ian @ hubnut do these collaboration with each others vehicles
Are other TH-camrs allowed to use Harry's road? 😂

@1:04 It is brave because running costs of said Bentley can easily skyrock with minor repairs and.

It's a marvel to own but only if you can afford the expensive repairs and maintenance, or else stay away.
Great video Jame, made me laugh quite a lot, love the Beard meets food reference, very good.
Thanks.

Tyres last 6 years max. Regardless of tread. Should be changed asap. Can be dangerous, look for cracking inside the tread and the sidewall. If lucky it's been stored indoors and won't have UV degradation. But rubber degrades with time. Sorry!
Spot on.

This is one of the very few cars that I think looks great on photos and videos, but not so great in person. Everytime I see one of these, I can't stop thinking that it looks like a cheap-ish crossover and not like a classy GT car. It rides fairly high and just looks incredibly tall.
Iirc the mulliner spec did include different suspension, arbs and steering rack/settings - it wasn't just cosmetic.
In the Netherlands they sell for 40 to 50 k . How is such a price difference possible?
Always have loved the Continental GT. But fear of long-term maintenance has kept me from taking the plunge. My alternate has been the 2004 CL 55 AMG. Easy to maintain, usable, backseat, plenty quick, but it seems the grass is greener on the other side. I still yearn for one of these British land yachts.
the only poroblem is not reliabilty or how expensive parts are, its that to do anything on the engine its an engine out and engine out is at least 5k
Hi Jay - forgive me if my query has already been answered elsewhere - but is this video a collage of reviews ? I couldn't help but notice that in some under the hood shots the engine had a 5.6 litre nameplate, but in others it was clearly visible as 6.0 litre. I'm confused - tks in advance.

Can go one of 2 ways, you either get a good well maintained bargain, or a complete disaster that needs constant repair. Personally I'd be avoiding it (like my wife's cooking), at some point it will need something and it'll be expensive.
