I agree, but for small wood turnings they should be just fine. When I do something like these I will always use a mortise and tennon joint.

End grain to end grain will definitely fail. Looks pretty but I am afraid you will hurt yourself. Stay safe.

I like the combination of woods used, but shouldn't there be a wood dowel drilled lengthwise into the handle to reinforce it? I had butt joined wood fall apart on a handle before. I make fishing rod handles using various types of wood.
