4 Idaho College Students Murdered in ‘Crime of Passion’

- Four University of Idaho students were found dead in a house near the campus. They were identified as Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen. The murder is being called "a crime of passion." According to police, the killer used "an edged weapon such as a knife." The medical examiner reportedly ruled out a murder-suicide. Authorities say there's no risk to other students on campus although the killer is still on the loose.

There seems to be a confusion regarding the term "crime of passion". That does not mean passion in the meaning most people think of as in a romantic relationship. The term "crime of passion" is used when they believe that the killer knew the person and acted out of hate, revenge or some other emotion. It is usually indicated by the amount of wounds that go far beyond what is necessary to kill someone.

My deepest condolences to the families involved and to those who lost their lives way too early and for such a stupid reason. They seemed so happy in their videos and this is just a terribly sad situation. I can’t believe someone could go out of their way to do this. It really shows how quickly life can be taken away from us. Again, my deepest condolences. I’m so sorry this happened.

@@Didenne the best thing is to try to ignore watching the news even though sometimes some stuff is good but pass on the bad ones because I usually get stressed over a lot of things and when I stop watching the news, trying to stay healthy helps me in the long run. Stuff like this comes without anyone knowing just enjoy life to the fullest is probably one of my biggest goal in life.😊

No it was prob one of the girls ex boyfriends whom got jealous she moved on and he broke in and killed her and all the other roommates because if he obviously just killed her than he knows the others will rat him out and he would get caught. The university has a vested interest in saying there is no danger to other students. And that interest is a financial one. It's callous and dangerous move to put money over the safety of other students. Until the killer is identified they should be making students aware of the danger and encouraging them to take precautions

That was a prime example of the University using it's influence to try and steer the case in a direction that was better for the universities PR. In that case many of the Universities high ranking executives including the president was fired for their part in the cover-up. And the university paid a huge settlement

A crime of passion generally means there's some type of relationship between the victim and perp. Childhood friend, acquaintance, gas station clerk, who knows. They'll get 'em soon.

There is probably something at the crime scene that led them to believe it was targeted.
Prob one of the girls exes and he prob broke in and killed her first and then took out the others because obviously they’re a witness to the crime so that usually happens.
1. By the way they were killed. 2. Perhaps they have a suspect or they recognise the MO or they believe that this person had only this one target, again by they way they were killed.
A lot of the times the police and stuff know more than they can tell.
Probably because of the number of stab wounds and location of the stab wounds, there may also be DNA evidence, fingerprints at the scene and other evidence such as cell phone calls/text.

I don't think she was defending their actions, more of saying "They did everything right" because so often we're told "If you do this, you'll be safe" "Don't do this, it's dangerous" but this shows that it really doesn't even matter because it still happens.
How does someone murder four people at the same time , unless of course, there were multiple attackers in the apartment? Did anyone fight back? They were murdered by being stabbed .... something is not right .
Multiple attackers, victims were asleep in separate rooms, it could be many things, but the police is not going to release that much detail so early on.

Steven you mentioned that authorities said there's no risk to the community but the Idaho Police Chief clearly states we can't say that there's no threat to the community. I would definitely say be on guard. He said this in a live news conference. I send my condolences to the families this is a tragic and unexcusable act and the person or persons need to be brought to Justice.
Exactly, the whole story stinks of misinformation. It seems to me that someone acted with emotion but Inside Edition called it passion and told everyone not to worry. I think a crime of passion wouldve been solved by now because it hints at motive.

Also it's inaccurate reporting here. The authority that said crime of passion was the mayor, not the police. And when reporters asked him why he came to that conclusion he walked it back and said "I don't know what this was"

An excessive amount of force. Even after the victim was deceased.
I'm going to guess that whoever did it was some crazy person that one of the victims knew.

They actually didn't decide this. The mayor just sort of blurted it out in a statement, and then later retracted it when reporters asked him why he thought that. He said yeah you're right I don't know what this was.
Totally unfathomable and senseless that the world has lost four beautiful souls who had so much life to live and give so much more to the world than we will now never know. I wish every ounce of strength to the loved ones to be able to carry on. I hope at the very least they get the answers they need but sadly it won't bring them back. Rest in peace 💙

If I was a student at Idaho, I would immediately resign and transfer to another university. This university clearly isn’t safe, they need more safety measures in place.
