Fierce self-compassion is a form of self-protection. I love this concept because it shows very well that compassion is not only about being soft and kind. It means also setting boundaries, expressing our needs, and stepping out of our comfort zone if we want to grow!

I feel like men are often self-sacrificing as well, especially for their families. And, they seem to have quite a lot of difficulty in expression of softness towards themselves. ❤️

As a woman who has learned to embody strong yang, fierce, masculine energy over the years in the workplace, it has been so important for me to learn how to integrate the tender yin, being, feminine energy. Thank you for providing clear language around the two sides to self-compassion, Kristin. It helps me and my clients!

It’s such a powerful meditation that helps me to embrace many faces of feminine energy especially the fierce one which I haven’t noticed much. Thank you very much for this much needed practice

Wow, definitely saving this for my daily practice. I've listened to many beautiful meditations but not one that weaved yin and Yan.

Thank you for developing this I was feeling that, I had concerns about the non-doing state, and need to take action. I like the integration part. And it has worked for me.

The yin and yang balance is different for every person, regardless of sex. Having said this, I'm aware of the broader social picture where women may struggle to channel the fierce yang energy collectively. It's possible Kristin's message could reach a broader audience if it were gender neutral. As a 'man', wanting to channel fierce compassion (the combination of yin and yang), a book encompassing a message of gender inclusivity, in all it's variations, would be welcome. After all, fierce compassion is itself a non-binary dialectic. Thank you for this amazing meditation. 🙏❤️💪😌 M

Ironically, "self-compassion" can only come from others, in a process of reparenting to replace the self-loathing too many of us carry away from our abusive and emotionally abandoned childhoods, as a result of parents thoughtlessly and selfishly bringing children into a world that no longer has a place for them and who do not have the time, protection, and care to properly parent. So, support groups like the 12-step groups often accomplish what expensive, rarely available individual therapy or hopium programs like this one cannot provide. Self-compassion is not a self-administered therapy and must be freely and lovingly granted unconditionally by our fellows, to replace what we did not get in our traumatic childhoods. Stress R Us

There's lots of mention of women and none of men. Does not the life of everyone (including women) benefit from helping everyone (including men) grow?

I don't think it helps to draw lines between men and women unless one is looking for a target market. Men are also taught to suppress what they feel and to act in certain ways which are not healthy. In fact I would say women are far less inhibited when it comes to sharing how they feel whereas men have a lot of difficulty.

I listened to a spotify podcast where Kristin Neff was featured, and there she talked more about how men also struggle with self-compassion, especially with the yin side of it. And my impression so far, from starting her workbook, is that it's for both genders. There are examples of men and women who struggle with self-compassion and what they can do for themselves. So while I agree with what you say, I think this video might not be representative of the whole approach.

@@AG-ej7wm Yes I haven't read the book but I've found the meditation exercises Kristin has put up for free very helpful. There's nothing new in it though. It was John Bradshaw who introduced me to the idea of self compassion for men. He has some videos on youtube as well about self compassion. He's a funny guy.

Men are socialized to protect, set boundaries and stand up for themselves, women are not. Read a book.
