I like how Komaeda's mind distorts the reality of some of the characters. Makoto's this smooth ass senpai type because of how much the real Komaeda idolizes him.
Tsumiki's sexualization is downplayed a TON. Her fanservice is really soft core because Komaeda doesn't really sexualize her.
He sees the relationship between Izayoi and them to be perfectly stable and without fault because his beloved senpais can do no wrong.
But the funniest thing is: Komaeda's mind legitimately treats Sayaka as literally nothing more than a shoujo anime protagonist. Like, the MOST stereotypical shoujo romance ever. He idolizes her like the others, but he has absolutely no idea what her personality is.
The best part of Makoto being a smooth senpai in his mind is that Naegi is actually Komaeda's kouhai.
Also, it seems that the reason Chiaki (and to some extent Hajime) are not inside of this world because they meant too much to him.

Toni 'Hazel' Pendleton It was an interesting choice of friends he wanted. I think it was subtly implied that Komaeda respected Fuyuhiko for his actions at the end of the second chapter of DR2. I remember him saying something like "Fuyuhiko used Pekos death as a stepladder to true hope" to Hajime in chapter 3. And, in Ch.4 Fuyuhiko told Nagito not to give up hope trying to find an exit out of the fun house when they first got there, and Nagito remembered that later when they got to grape house. As for Soda, I'm honestly not sure lol. Maybe he respected how hard he goes after Sonia lol? That's my interpretation at least.

Yeah, Fuyuhiko didn't hate him that much. I remember he even defended Nagito at one point when he was still a loner, seemingly because it reminded him of the way people treat him. He was also very worried of Nagito when he was about to die from the Despair Disease, unlike Gundham who openly said he wouldn't mind Nagito dying.
In Despair Arc, they just found him annoying. In SDR2, they got fed up with his antics, but they didn't start to hate him (or just really dislike him) until the end when he tried to kill them for the sake of ultimate hope in Chapter 5 (which resulted in AI Chiaki's death).
Okay, to the people saying that Fuyuhiko didn't hate Komaeda. I didn't mean a burning passion hate likr Hiyoko to Mikan, I meant like an annoyance or a pest. That's what I meant!!

I thought it looked familiar. I noticed a parallel a while back with the school killings. Izuru has a bullet skim the side of his face. This is when he learns the unpredictability of despair. Hajime, in the neo world program, has the same thing happen when the big electronic monsters in DR2 shoot. Monokuma was trying to prove the world was "real." XD
I also kind of like how he noticed it was Hajime not Izuru

I think it's interesting how Komaeda's luck works in this ova. Usually it's something bad happens to him or people he cares about but he gets something really good to compensate (for example, parents die horribly right in front of him, he gets a large inheritence to compensate, when he goes through the trauma of being kidnapped by a serial killer and kept in a garbage bag he finds a winning lottery ticket, etc). But in the ova, when something bad happens to him, something good happens to someone else. He gets pushed into traffic and sent flying, and Maizono gets helped up by incredibly suave Naegi (...is this how Komaeda sees Naegi?) All those chemicals blow up on his face, and Souda gets a date with Sonia. He goes rolling into Tsumiki's skirt and probably beaten up by Saionji, and Souda's date with Sonia goes well if that picture she's looking at is any indication. Since this is essentially Komaeda's dream world, this could be how he wishes his luck worked, with bad things only happening to him and good things happening to the people he cares about, instead of good things only happening to him and his family and friends being horribly slaughtered by some chance of fate. In the ova he's actually allowed to have friends and close relationships in general just because his luck works so differently. Well, if Izuru's luck talent can really counter Komaeda's luck then maybe it won't be too difficult for him to have the life he wishes for. (Also, it seems Komaeda can't imagine a life completely without his luck...)
It's a really fascinating and endearing look into his desires.
Yep! And as someone who's been analysing Komaeda since dr2 and trying to tell people that Komaeda wants friends, I'm super happy with this ova. It's not perfect, but all things considered I think they handled it fine.
In a way it's kind of similar to Komaeda's other character song Zanka. Some of the lyrics make me think of this ova.
Well also. Since he says in the OVA "I only have bad luck" he actually considers his luck cycle itself to be his bad luck. the fact the cycle exists is just bad luck.

I just thought I'd point out that when Hinata was leaning over Komaeda and asking if he could hear him, he word-for-word quoted and mirrored the opening scene in SDR2 with him and Komaeda on the beach.

It's kinda sad that, in Komaeda's dream world, he wanted to be friends with everyone. (Especially Kuzuryu and Souda, who were two of the characters most annoyed by him.) He cared about his classmates, but they hated him. :(

I'm just so entertained by how much Komaeda has been growing on NicoB
KirroSoya Komaeda is the best character in all of Danganronpa, he grows on everyone. At first he's like a pest that you just want to destroy, then you learn about his backstory and you feel sorry for him, then you start to try to understand him more and it makes you really sad, then he gets Chiaki killed and you hate him forever. Then you eventually start to kind of tolerate him again until you love him more than anything else in the whole world
KirroSoya Well Komaeda was never really a bad guy to begin with, it was just that mixture of despair and hope that Junko infected him with, he even tried to shoot junko and couldv'e saved the world if Izuru hadn't stepped in.

I didn't expect this OVA to connect to other anime at all, though I probably really should have. Also the introspective look at Komaeda's inner thoughts was neat.

I want to ask about DR V3 spoilers....
Do we have someone in the mods who already knows everything what will happen in the game (or at least killer and victims)? Because it's will be a lot easier to find actual spoilers and don't spoil game to other mods who will wait official English release.
And since I already know story of DR V3 (not only deaths), how I can help?
pmintertek Well, they're just banning anyone who posts anything about v3 that we learned after the official release.
pmintertek Sadly no, none of us mods currently know about the story or killers. Well I might have been spoiled on one of two things but it's hard to tell what's true or not. ANYWAY I made an announcement back on the fist episodes of Ni No Kuni, and I think episode 8 of Angel Beats that any reference to DRV3 (be it a real plot point or fake) will be met with a ban since we can't tell the difference, and that we do have a board on the Picky Penguin steam group made specifically for spoilers.
Now let's see how can you help? Well there's two ways. If you see anyone spoil by accident, say like a slip of the tongue or something like that, just give them a heads up kindly asking to remove that spoiler.
If they refuse to remove it, or the spoiler seems malicious, let one of us mods know immediately. There are 5 of us and you can find comments by us on most every video. Myself, EeveeVSHooh, RandomBrowser, GillyXD, and Jean-Phillipe, find one of us (or just use this comment thread here) giving us their user name, what video it was on, and if it was in reply to another comment or a stand alone. We will as soon as possible find and remove the commenter and request Nico to enact a ban for them.
Now honestly we haven't had too many spoilers so far, the Picky Penguins are pretty solid when it comes to that, but in order to combat trolls that regularly show up in DR LP comment sections, we have discussed with Nico the possibility of turning off the comment section for the first few DRV3 videos so that us mods can play through it unspoiled and be ready to hunt down anyone who would ruin everyone else's fun.

I find it weird that Chiaki wasn't in here. This place was full of people Komaeda knew/cared about, regardless of whether they were alive or dead, right? Chiaki definitely meant a lot to Komaeda, just like she meant a lot to all the students. I wonder why she isn't here? :(

Well its like seqka711 said: Komaeda cared for Chiaki just as much as all of the other students. For him she was hope. People seem to forget him saying "she was our hope" before his stepping stone speech. Her death broke him just like it broke everyone else. Honestly I think they didn't show her in this because they probably wanted her appearance beside of Hajime on the boat in the Hope side to be the final farewell

I agree here. Because Chiaki is Nagito's (and everyone else's) hope in many ways, her not being present when Nagito didn't remember what "hope" was until towards the end makes sense. In a sense, he had already lost his hope but through the process of having his "world" destroyed, he remembered it.
Komaeda in his dream world seems to not care about hope so much. Since Chiaki was the embodiment of hope, including her in his simulation would probably have brought back the memories that he was trying to clock out.
Komaeda's whole character is so tragic. This OVA shows us just how much he wants to be normal, and how he wants to put everyone else's happiness before his own, though in reality his luck tends to screw them. It's why in real life he tried to separate himself from the others as much as possible; he didn't want to hurt them.
And then there's the circumstances of his death in the game. After he discovered he and all the others besides the traitor had destroyed the world in the name of despair, he came to hate them all, including himself. He decided to sacrifice himself and try to kill the rest of the Despairs in order to make hope win. They mention during the investigation that whoever tortured him must have held a grudge against him, and that was true.
[Revision: actually, I don't think he wanted to kill them because he hated them. He hated the despair they brought and what they would be if they remembered, as shown by Mikan earlier. After giving it much thought, I believe his decision to get them all killed was to prevent any of them from ever remembering, so that they would all die as his precious symbols of hope. In doing so, not only would he defeat the Ultimate Despair to the world, but he would also defeat the despair that drove them all insane, thus why he believed doing so would make him the Ultimate Hope. So, from his twisted, demented logic, he really did it out of love for them all.]
He is such a sweetheart who truly cares about the others, but because of his past experiences with his luck, along with his dementia, he can't appropriately express it. I was constantly annoyed during both the game and the anime how everyone treated him and no one (with the possible exception of Hajime, and only if the player decides) even attempts to get to know him.

That weird feeling when your favorite character (Fuyuhiko) hangs out with the character you want to bury alive the most.(Nagito) Not gonna lie, I think this one episode was 10 x better than all of DR3, and that says A LOT.

I think they kinda gave the plot away with Hajizuru's fingergun. I would have liked it better if he had used multiple talents to defeat his oponents (Hijoko's moves, Nekomaru's strenght, Akane's agility, Sakura's and Juzo's techniques, and even Genocider's scissors attacks). Nontheless, this was funny as f*ck

The reason Nagi and the others seem different is because of how Komaeda sees them. He sees them as basically Gods so he over-exaggerates what they do. That's what I think anyway.

Even though I highly enjoyed this OVA (Nagito as a main character, his friendship with Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko, Sonia being badass, Izuru, dat moment with Hajime at the end, no mary-sue Chiaki to steal screentime, ...), I'm still a bit disapointed by the fact that a lot of questions I have stayed unresolved. Why was Hajime the only one there when Nagito woke up (implied when Nagito came to hug Fuyu and Kazu) ? Did the others knew that Nagito was about to wake up (since they seemed to be waiting for him outside) ?

Actually, DR3!Chiaki (or human Chiaki) is indeed a mary-sue. There is no way you couldn't see that. As for SDR2!Chiaki, she's better but still way overrated.

DR3 probably turned me into a bit of a cynic toward the franchise but this felt kinda empty to me. Is it me, or did this not only not answer much, but just add more questions? It spends more time on shallow (but admittedly kinda cute and funny) fanservice then actually explaining things.
For the concept they went for, I think it turned out okay. We got some depth into Komaeda's character, and how this might be a side of himself that he represses. The main problem was that the outlandishness of certain character phrases jarred a tad too much to make us believe there was any hidden sides to other characters brought up. Other things: How can Ryota interact with Imposter in the classroom, anyway? And how can Komaeda recall people entering the warehouse if he was already dead by then? Most importantly, were memories from the Neo World Program restored?
How do you argue for Ruruka? (Honestly asking: no snark.) To me, she seemed like Saionji, but Kodaka figured that no one would buy this sob story either, so he just let it go. I mean, here's a thought: if Seiko's medication can't react with a chemical in Ruruka's sweets, why can't she use her talent to make sweets without this chemical?
+joshua Paul I didn't question Ryota interacting with the Impostor, but now that I think about it, why was he even there at all? I'm pretty sure none of the 77th class even met the real Ryota aside from Mikan and Impostor. In regards to your last part, it's not as simple as that. After doing a bit of research, I found out that even sugar-free sweets would still have a possibility of triggering Seiko's medication. Not definitely, but it's far, far too risky to take a chance and figure out what works and what doesn't. When you're a test subject with a good chance of dying, trial and error is not a smart option. I could also turn it around and ask why Seiko didn't just develop a version of her medicine that didn't come with annoying side effects. If she could develop extremely powerful aphrodisiacs that instantly took effect and potions that could enlarge a puppy to 20x it's original size, surely that would've been no problem for her.

As for why they wouldn't check such a thing with Mikan or a licensed doctor, here's why.
Shoddy writing. Concepts that play a roll in one aspect were not thought out in the long run. Just like how Seiko's medicine worked when it needed to, or how Ryota's anime allowed people to speak yet not close their eyes.

+joshua Paul Ruruka also holds her sweets to a very high standard, so it's entirely possible that taking out or changing any chemicals or ingredients that make them what they are would be unacceptable to her. And yes, unfortunately I'm willing to accept some of the more overlooked details as shoddy writing. We only ever got "I can't eat sugar or I'll die" with zero elaboration on any of the specifics from her or Ruruka, which makes a lot of things vague and forces viewers to come to their own conclusions.
Now THIS was what I wanted from DR 3 anime Hope side. The focus on the main characters from the second game. Granted they changed some things because it's an OVA but this is amazing! Now we need the other people's dreams.

I kinda like the detail that in this world, he's super unlucky and since the world may play out his subconscious wishes, it makes a lot of sense considering his luck cycle had killed people he loved like his parents (and his dog, I've seen people say?).
So in this world, him taking the brunt of all bad luck means no one else can get hurt from his cycle. That's pretty sad :')

This OVA was great and all, but it sucks that they still never explained how Komaeda knew all that info about Junko, Mukuro and the Kamakura project back in the Despair Arc. That's gotta be the biggest plot hole of DR3 for me.
Really? Not how one man (Tengan) can be so fucking stupid to think his stupid-ass plan would work, AND THEN HAVE IT FUCKING SUCCEED?!
His plan was actually simpler than you think. It was basically to kill everyone in the game. That's it. He didn't even care if he died too. It was all for the sake of Ryota using his hope video. If Ryota hadn't shown up at Makoto's hearing (which Tengan warned him not to do), he wouldn't have been caught up in the game too.
If anything, Ryota survived mainly because he stuck around Tengan (someone he knew was the mastermind), and Kyoko (who was really smart and analytical of her surroundings).
Now, as for Komaeda being able to know more than Munakata, Juzo, and Chisa combined about Kamukura, Junko, and Mukuro's schemes they've done together, all while being stranded on a deserted island, with no explanation at all, still remains a HUGE problem for me. I couldn't even begin to imagine how his luck helped him know all this stuff...
MProductions GAMING No, it's not as simple as that. Tengan's plan is as unnecessary as it is fucking stupid. First of all, why? Why kill all the Branch Leaders? There's no logic or reason behind this decision. There's no reason to kill them, with the exception of the ones who wished to create a new faction (Namely, Ruruka and Izayoi), and perhaps those aligned with Munakata. And even then, it's still unnecessary because the hope video would force them to go against their actual beliefs.
The rest of the plan, as well, is completely unnecessary. Why did Tengan have to set this entire thing up to spread the hope video? Why didn't he just, oh I dunno, ASK Ryota? Or steal his phone and do it himself? Or ANY other course of action? Even if he didn't do this, when Ryota showed up at the hearing, WHY DID HE PUT HIM IN THE GAME AND GIVE HIM AN ACTION DETRIMENTAL TO HIS GOALS?! He could have taken Ryota out of the game when he knocked everyone out and moved them to the underground portion. And why, of ALL THINGS, would he make his code "using his talent"? All that does is ensure that he DOESN'T spread the hope video.
However, Tengan had absolutely no idea that Ryota WOULD stick with him and Kirigiri. There was also no guarantee that, after his death or before they met up, he would sleep away from the monitors. When he was with him, sure, he could have told him where to sleep. But after he died, he could have slept right underneath the damned thing and boom, his plan is ruined. If Nagito were the mastermind, then I could accept this. His luck would be good enough to prevent Ryota from dying under any circumstance. But Tengan doesn't have the luck, nor should he have the faith in his luck, to believe that this plan would work.
aneonfoxtribute Tengan also antagonized Munakata in a way that threatened Ryota and didn't broadcast anything. How would Ryota have seen this bullshit?! Also his shift to a villain was so jarring. It feels like they were going to have Chisa be the mastermind but changed it at the last second for shock value.
Nacho Hangover I mean, the monitors could have had cameras in them and he may have projected them to the tower where Ryota broadcast the video.
This OVA made me love Komaeda even more than I already did.

I'm a bit disappointed only a small portion of characters were used. I kinda wanted this to be a feature-length film. You know 2 hours and all that jazz. Any time we spent with these characters is a plus.
