I love that at the end Paul still does the formal salute he learned from Duncan before single combat, like in the first movie, but he also adds the Fremen phrase he learned from Jamis as well, "May thy knife chip and shatter." Shows what he has become by then. The best of Atreides and Fremen combined.
I loved the trailer - just enough for excitement, but only glimpses of various details. I think that with Denis Villeneuve we finally have someone with enough skill and respect to pull movie adaptation of stories in Dune universe off, and cast and technical crew brilliant enough to make it great. I was literally the first person in my town to buy a ticket for the Part 1 and it was a rare sight to have the place packed with people and barely a noise heard - people were so enthralled. After reading the books ages ago and watching SF channel TV adaptations it is great to finally have something where you can really, really enjoy a scene in the setting - a slow paced one or an action one. And the visuals. My God the visuals! I have seen part one 5+ times, including some selected pieces of the movie which are a feast on their own. I am trying to curb my expectations, but I trust the filmmaker who has never let me down - neither in the Arrival not in Blade Runner 2049 and with Dune series he is making a masterpiece. I wish there was an uncut edition of part one, even with 5 hours I'd watch it without a break. Take care Molly!

There are so many parts of the trailer that impressed me. Among them was the gladiator scene where Feyd was fighting his opponent. In the book, I only envisioned it to be like a smaller size arena but the trailer showed like a coliseum-size.
Right? Such a marvelously weird, and mildly terrifying, power couple. I'll just be here on these tenterhooks if anyone needs me for the next five months.
I just started the books, starting with the prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. Hope to get to the original books before November. New fan but a huge fan. I remember the David Lynch film. Lol.
I’m glad they are giving Princess Irulan some screen time in this movie. She didn’t feature much in the novel, except for quotes from her biographies and histories that are featured at the beginning of every (almost every?) chapter. Therefore, even though she didn’t play much of a role in the novel, her contribution to the lore is very important. I also think Francis Pugh is PERFECT to play her.

And anyway, he has to be better at doing all things Fremen than the Fremen themselves. As to the books...well, I'm so old that I read "Children of Dune" when it was serialized in Analog SF magazine some time in the 1970's.And then thru the end of Leto II's [xyzw] year reign. Talk about cringing scenes.
I'm old enough to remember when Dune was originally serialized in Analog (in two parts). And I had a chance to buy John Schoenherr's sandworm cover painting back in 1972. But I didn't have the huge sum of $200 (sold recently for six figures).
The only nitpick I have is teeny: I wish they'd let Florence use her natural accent (or bit more poshed up version) for Irulan. Other than that, epic. This Feyd is bananas, and I'm unbelievably curious as to what Villeneuve's version of Alia will be like. (Also, it sounds like you've never read Heretics? Actually I haven't either, I have a habit of not reading the last book in a series for various neurotic reasons)
I’m in the middle of book 3. I’ve never read sci fi before and it’s sometimes overwhelming. Would you recommend me finishing the chronicles? Or end at #3?

I have read all 6 but there is a huge time jump between a couple of them. I enjoyed the novels very much but they definitely don't get lighter as you go.
First two books are Paul Atreidis story and they go together. Second two books are Leto II story and they should be read together as well. I recommend you at least to finish Book 4 The God Emperor of Dune to fully understand the Kwisatz Haderach thing, the Ultimate Being with the ultimate consciousness . And yes it's a big commitment, I agree.
I definitely need to read the books. As a child of the 60s and 70s, I have fond memories of the original movie. Part 1 of this was disappointing for me. But, as I said, I've never read the books. Part of what I didn't like about Part 1 was that I wasn't aware that it WAS Part 1 of 2. The title didn't reflect that. Once this hits streaming services, I'll probably watch them both.
