  • I show a new type of box I'm working on that features a spring open drawer mechanism. I also show a bit about how the mechanisms work.
    Check out my website at : www.crypticwoodworks.com
    I'm also on Facebook : / crypticwoodworks
    And I sell products on Etsy at : www.etsy.com/shop/CrypticWood...

    Great idea,I googled 'spring loaded drawer mechanism' and this was one of the recommended videos, I'm going to use this for a project. Thanks!

    Thank you!! I just needed the springing mechanism behind it and couldn’t figure out how to do it! Such a simple idea. Thank you.

      Janell Woodbury Glad that helped you. I’m thinking there are even easier and smaller ways to do this with a different spring.

    Perfect! I'm gonna make a box that holds some tea, some cups and other tea related items and I wanted either (or both) a serving tray hidden in the bottom, or a cutting board... Although a cutting board might be a bit heavy, but I might figure out an other way to implement the board. Thank you! You've been a great help!

    Question: how has the longevity of the spring action been? Does it pass the test of time?

    I would love to see how this was built. You have inspired me to make a spy / ninja themed room, including hidden doors, trip lasers and cryptic puzzle boxes.

      +The Golden Radio Sorry I missed this comment from a while back. However, in that time I added a series on making spring open drawers. I hope that helps to explain all the basic steps. I often want to expand my creations into more furniture sized objects.

    I have an idea for an interactive box but need help. Could I get your input?

  • @Joburgbass
    @Joburgbass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This would be great for a #geocache. If the box has, say 7 numbered buttons with the same load on them and you need to press three buttons simultaneously to get the compartment to open (so four red herring buttons). Combine it with a clever puzzle to solve to get the combination, that would be a great hide. #Geocaching

      Thanks for the comment. I've actually been thinking about this since you posted it. I like the idea and I might just have to look into it for a further build. I think i could make a customizable code too!

    I am looking for something like this, but to spring open a lid to a trinket box, rather than a drawer. Would it work the same way, by just attaching it at a different angle to make the lid pop?

  • @LogoBallers
    @LogoBallers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should put on a false front and shorten the dowel in the back. Make it hidden so that pop out drawer is secret

    • @crypticwoodworks
      @crypticwoodworks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool idea. I did this one mainly just for me and to get a feel for how the mechanisms worked. When I make more they'll be a bit less obvious!

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could shorten the dowel to end just beneath the floor, not drill a hole in the floor, eliminate the rear support for the floor; instead use the springiness of the floor to push down on the dowel.

    • @crypticwoodworks
      @crypticwoodworks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlwatib That would be a neat way to do it!

      I haven't made more of this style of box, but I do have a number of other spring open boxes on my Etsy site at : www.etsy.com/listing/468066945/jewelry-keepsake-box-with-spring-open?ref=shop_home_active_3
      These feature both a spring open drawer and the unique linkage hinges for the top. I have several of this style for sale.

    Really? Like the easiest spring mrchanism... why it took you more than a day? I've been doing this for years and never took me more than a day or two on figuring out how to do it. I have several ways depending on sizes or purpose. All using same principle.
