Moved from ZHA to Zigbee2MQTT about 2 months ago because a power meter wasn't compatible with ZHA. I saw in the ZHA that they are adding it, but I'm liking Zigbee2MQTT more than ZHA so far (even though ZHA is more user friendly)
@@HomeAutomationGuy Luckily no because I have few Zigbee devices (around 10) at this point. Including installation and configuration it was 1 hour tops
It also really depends on how you want to use your zigbee devices too. I started out with ZHA, and then started playing around with NodeRED, then started using the zigbee devices in NodeRED, and just didn't like how I had to interface with them. I currently have ZHA and would like to move to Zigbee2MQTT - I have a Pi4 running Home Assistant. Do you happen to have a guide you use for the switch or was it simple enough? Thank you.
Z2M is also the winner in my book because it allows for a cleaner separation, as well as a common interface for more than just Zigbee. With Tasmota support for MQTT, as well as several other micro systems, having one broker setup for all devices just makes sense. It also allows for having other control software for mocking up simple automations, like Node Red, and for correcting and integrating devices that don't follow actual Zigbee spec, which Tuya and Aqara seem to love to do. I also run Mosquito, outside of the HA instance, for more stability there as well. It may add a slight layer of complexity, but in the end it buys a lot more flexibility.
I love your videos. Been tremendously helpful as I enter the HA game. And I started on ZHA but went to MQTT when I took everything I learned and started a fresh HA .... MQTT is soooo much better. I spend about two hours yesterday setting up Z2M. After trial and error, i finally got a IKEA shortcut button paired. after another hour of asking AI and browsing forums trying to figure out how to use it for an automation I gave up.... There was complete inconsistency with what I could read and what i saw in HA. The only options I had for triggering automations where "update available state changed" "battery state change", oh and one "on action" which seems to be the single press.... Was unable to find any information that could resolve my issue. Some solutions suggested went something like this....: "go to the MQTT dahsborad, find your device, then press the pysical device, and inspect the logs in MQTT dashboard, to see what signal was sent, then go to automations, create a MQTT trigger, bind a topic to your device and defined the MQTT payload to listen for, based on what you learned from inspecting the logs" saaaaaay whaaaaat!? how is that even a thinkable UX? 😂 I'm sure there is a better way, but this scared me off completely. Switched to ZHA and this just worked out of the box so far 🤞
After a short time on ZHA I changed to Z2M. Whilst the initial setup was a bit more complicated, I have found I get more control over devices/enterties. With ZHA I was struggling with some Ikea products and a Neo Siren.
If all manufacturers would adhere to standard ZHA would be the best choice, but since manufacturers do as they pleased, zigbee2mqtt is the way to go, for maximum capability
Been waiting for a video like this. Have around 80 units running ZHA and finally everything seems to work. I have used Deconz but since some annoying bugs i switched to ZHA, don't regret it at all. But now I'm tempted to try ZigBee2MQTT as well 🤓
i migrated from 100+ devices to z2m, and i can say... its worth all the effort for sure! Only the ability to set hue motion sensors to update every second instead of 15 seconds or the sensitivity of these sensors for example.... it has so much more options that zha doesnt have.
nice video 👍🏼 I prefer Z2M because I feel like having more control, I can interact with my devices by publishing JSON payloads to MQTT topics Furthermore, there's lots of info and logs in the Mosquitto broker and Z2M add-ons Getting started with ZHA seems easier but you may feel it's boring after a while
I agree, sending JSON via MQTT is a great way to use Z2M to extend your automations beyond Home Assistant. But you have to remember that most people who want smart homes don't know what JSON is and how to send a payload. For those people I recommend the "boring" way 🤣
Isn't it better to keep the hubs for each devices and centralize everything on home assistant through the different hubs ? That way you keep the ability to update the devices officially through the hubs as well as some options that are not available on HA (like the last state option in case of power outage) ?
Z-Wave is rock solid and the pinnacle of home automation mesh networks (and will remain the backbone of my home), but... Zigbee devices are CHEAP and totally usable once you filter out all the junk and problematic ones. It seems that long-term it's better to hitch your horse to ZHA, especially if you're starting down this road for the first time or have only few devices that would require rebinding. Make it a point to shop for devices that are known working with ZHA today, thanks to the table online, that's not difficult to do.
Finally getting into Zigbee as a new light I wanted is only in Zigbee. So I am actually going to be using two cordinators and running both side by side, one with each light to see what I like better. The light is the Aqara T1M and I dont see it on the database at all, but it is working with ZHA (basic functions) but only with the Aquara hub can I get addressable LED support and themes. So I hope one of the two gets this feature soon and it will be the winner for me. The other option is order the Aquara M3 and pair Zigbee to IT, and then add IT to HA via Matter or Homekit. So this is 2 years old, curious how much has changed with your opinion or how things were then vs now?
I still use Zigbee2MQTT, and I now use an SM Light PoE Zigbee coordinator with it. Check out the My Zigbee Network Failed video on my channel for more info
Good video, but a comparison could have been more in depth. I.e. comparing support for different dongles/controllers, or how Z2M allows you to physically separate ZigBee controller from a HA host, or that Z2M is not tied to Home Assistant specifically etc
Great Video mate.. I have tried both platforms but got frustrated when ZHA had limited functionality for alot of devices esp Ikea Switches forcing me to move to Z2M. In terms of Ease of Use, Z2M since simple is pairing devices as long the device gets started on pairing mode, Z2M can automatically pickup the device. 1 Disadvantage which i think you did not highlight on ZHA was that during pairing mode it gives certain brand devices a default name e.g. Aqara sensors always gets named Lumi and we have to manually get it changed which is kinda annoying. But to be honest Z2M was a pain in getting setup especially when you are moving paltforms from ZHA.
Given that both systems support more or less the same devices and dongles the choice comes down to being locked-in to Home Assistant or not. I prefer to keep my options open, therefore Zigbee2MQTT and Mosquitto, both running in a separate VM from my HA VM, is my choice.
One of the biggest reasons to use Zigbee2MQTT is the broker. When you restart HA because of an update, your Zigbee network are still working while updating.
I wanted to use ZHA for the plug and play simplicity, so I went and got my first zigbee device: (TuYa PJ-ZGD01) Not supported in ZHA and just didn't know where to start once it was paired. So moved over to Z2MQTT and it was supported (had to create a cover entitity in HA) and now it works perfectly.
Personally I don't think one is better than the other. It depends on what products you use and what supports them. I have used Deconz, ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT and for my devices, which are detected successfully by all 3, there was absolutely no difference in performance. The Deconz Conbee stick, however, does have lower performance than a lot of other sticks. Honestly, use what is best for you. There is no one better than the other.
Thanks for the video, was a great comparison. I’ve just started with HA and ZHA basically auto installed itself. I’ve got 7 devices so I’m deciding whether to switch from ZHA to Z2M to try it out. I was surprised by your answer of preferring ZHA after you mentioned that some devices like the Aqara Cube have more functionality with Z2M
Some devices have more functionality. Is it really worth all the effort of Z2M just so you can play with a cube? In my opinion not really. But it may be worth the effort in order to get something more useful working, such as some Zigbee blinds or other devices that may not have ZHA compatibility.
Other than my Phillips Hue lights/sensors which are linked to my Phillips Hue bridge, I have a grand total of 4 Zigbee sensors/switches. And all of them are compatible with ZHA. My place is quite small, so I don't need that many. I'm fine on ZHA for now.
ZHA is great. No need to swap if you're happy with what you have!

I'm currently still running deconz on a dedicated RPi, but my place for the intermediate future is to run z2m on my new server and cut out one box. I also have a Hue gateway because of the firmware updates there ... I'm dreading the repairing ...
Thank you for your content, I have the automation bug and buying up bits an pieces of smart tech as I go using your (and Everything Smart Home's) advice. So, a year on, do you still have the same opinion about ZHA v MQTT and does Matter affect this? Cheers
I actually am considering switching from ZHA to zigbee2mqtt because the October update broke Zigbee for me. There is a thread on the forums about this. The "solution" so far is just rolling back to a Sept release. I feel burned over this because it took me a full day to track down the problem. I thought I had burned out my zigbee stick or that I had too much congestion (with.... 7 routers and 12 battery devices) but nope, reverting to 2021.9.7 restored reliability for me
I'm sorry to hear that! Having an unreliable Zigbee network is really frustrating! Do you know if the 2021.11 release has the same problems for you or has it been resolved?
@@HomeAutomationGuy I have not tried it to be honest. It was enough of a pain that I am avoiding the upgrade. I am going to watch the thread in the forums to see if others have been successful. I have also considered creating a second home assistant instance with a couple zigbee devices to test with
Thank you for the comparison. You mention the possibility of changing a device type when it's detected has something else. Could you explain how this is done? Thank you.
the main reason why I have two zigbee radios, majority of my stuff runs on ZHA while the incompatible stuff is on z2m. but once they are compatible with ZHA, ill just basically reset that device and pair it to ZHA. its just much better if you can skip the mqtt stuff and have a direct communication on the IOT device it self.
I was going to ask "Why choose? Why not run both?" and this seems to answer that question. Two radios. Just to clarify ... do you turn one of the radios off to pair with the other or just ignore the request to pair on the one you do not want?
I just purchased a zigbee usb stick and some sensors and lights. However I run my home assistant as a docker container. Suppose i cannot use zigbee2mqtt like that right?
Can one have both? I am thinking of adding an outdoor motion sensor that, I have been told, needs z2m. I have ZHA and really don’t look forward to repairing them all. So I would use z2m just for those devices that demand it.
Tried Z2MQTT and had a coupe of my devices not work at all even though they were listed as compatible. Just couldnt get them to work. Had to go back to ZHA and have had no issues.
Did you know you can update hue devices using the zha ota functionality? Simply download the files, put them in de data folder (the one you set using otau_directory property). Once enabled and files present, zha will now from time to time update your devices (or force update using a zigbee command). Been using this method and it works good!
Thanks for the great videos. It has allowed me to take my home automation to the next level. I have a question however I recently got a SonOff Zigbee USB stick and an Aqara motion sensor. They are my only Zigbee devices currently but I just can’t for the life of me get them to pair. Any advice or guide to get these running. I am using ZHA.
I don't have the 'motion' sensor but have several other Aqara devices and had the same issue with pairing. At first I thought it was an incompatibility with ZHA so I switched to Zigbee2MQTT. I still had some pairing issues but eventually got them paired. You have to hit the pair button on the device multiple times to get it to pair. I started having issues every time there was a HA core update and devices going offline and so I added an Ikea Tradfri repeater but couldn't get that working correctly so I switched back to ZHA and everything is working fine now. I'm guessing that the initial issues I had with ZHA may have been resolved by the recent updates. The only strange issue I have now is that ALL my sensors are going through the Ikea repeater instead of just the ones closer to that then my coordinator but everything is working so I let it be. I have also since(based on recommendations) put my coordinator(Sonoff Zigbee v3 'E') on a 3 foot extension cable to get it away from my server(Wyse thin client) and get the antenna up higher to minimize any signal strength issues.
A year later I still mind ZHA does not work as well with devices. I have a Aquara rocker double switch and after many hours of trying to get it to work I had to give up and go back to zigbee2mqtt which detects it fine.
What mesh protocol does Amazon Alexa (in built in their latest gen dots) use? I have a few old control4 zigbee devices still wired in my house that I can control using the C4/Alexa Skill. The other Nue smart switches were also instantly discovered via the echo dot and I switch these using Alexa. Same goes with a few Philips Hue bulbs. I don't have any other bridges or mesh controllers. So I see all this and control all my switches using the Alexa app. It's a real simple but very robust zigbee mesh. My question is now I am adding Home assistant installed on an intel NUC, what do I do about seeing these devices within HA? Which of these two protocols would suit me best? Do I even need to get a zigbee dongle for my HA NUC? If it ain't broke don't fix it.. So Wouldn't I be best just to Keep using ALexa to control my mesh? Is there any way to "See" these zigbee devices and control them in HA without even getting a HA zigbee dongle? Thanks!
Good comparison I switched from ZigBee2MQTT to ZHA some time ago when my dongle died .... still missing some ZigBee devices in ZHA As I switch to HA-Yellow now I think of switching back. to ZigBee2MQTT. Is there a possibbility to run both in parallel using an dongel for ZHA and the intergarted receiver of the Yellow for ZigBee2Mqtt?
You can do that, but be aware that the two Zigbee networks may overlap each other if you use the same channels and that could cause interference and problems.
Nice video made 👍 I'm missing Deconz, this platform also deserves a comparisons video 😀 I have Deconz in a docker, so when HA is unavailable i always have a second platform to turn off/on the lights. Think that this is also a good reason for Deconz or Zigbee2MQTT, to have it independent from HA.
I've heard GREAT things about Deconz, I just have never had the opportunity to use it myself. I don't need three different Zigbee networks in my house - I just started with Zigbee2MQTT which is why I am using it.
@@HomeAutomationGuy yeah three different Zigbee networks is somehow overkill 🤣 I've never used Zigbee2MQTT, but your video made me doubt if I should give it a try 😉
After moving from Z2M to ZHA, and it's largely unreliable compared to Z2M, especially if you are regularly needed to restart Homeassistand due to HACS Integration updates. It seems with every restart of HA core ZHA is restarted as well and the network really take a while to re-establish it self. I take up to minutes to get back in reliable state (in my case) further it seems that with a large ZigBee network with about 60 Devices (on SkyConnect) Messages are not arriving well. Further, the Zigbee Group handling is somewhat strange in ZHA. There are a few positive things about ZHA like Easy to setup and maintain, but I would Prefer ZHA would be an independently running offical AddOn rather than part of the core. Just to keep it running while restarting HA Core container. If you have a large installatios or independant Areas it's much easier to have multiple RaspI with Z2M running publishing to a different topic.
Question for all Z2M users: I just started in the HA game two days ago with HA Green and SkyConnect. I am a newb at coding and want to avoid that as much as possible, so it hough I’d keep it simple thus went with ZHA. But already the first few Aqara sensors are failing or not supported. Removing ZHA and setting up Z2M looks manageable, but question: is the pairing and automating as “easy” (coding free as much as can be) with Z2M as with ZHA? Thanks so much in advance!
It's almost as easy and shouldn't require any coding if you use the Z2M add on. You just open the add-on web interface via the Home Assistant navigation menu, click "Enable Join" and pair the device the same as ZHA
Ive noticed some updates to ZHA have started opening up more information from my devices. My Aqara air monitor just recently started reporting TVOC data where it wasn't recognized by ZHA before.
I have been a ZHA user since my entrance into Home Assistant about 3 years ago. However I keep running into roadblocks with new devices that makes me strongly consider Zigbee2MQTT. The recent issue is with an IKEA VOC meter (vindastryke). The unit is working on ZHA but the VOC index reading is not. Can ZHA coexist with Zigbee2MQTT on the same instance of HA using a shared coordinator?
I don't think the coordinator will support multiple Zigbee networks via both ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. In my experience you need to pick one or the other, or use two coordinators and create to Zigbee networks - which might cause interference
New to Home assistant and home automation. i'm currently trying both solution. Z2m is clearly winner in my case and for sure for every ppl who wants to properly use fully their devices. ZHA lack a lot of functionnalities... as an example, my heater controller in ZHA wont set entities for preset, mode, and even wont detect battery level ... how to automate things when hardaware is partially supported ?
I stumbled in one major drawback with ZHA: you can only have one broker. I live in farmhouse where I have sensors and devices in large area. So there must be some sort of meshing but I can't make it with ZHA.
@@HomeAutomationGuy You can run multiple z2m instances to control multiple Zigbee dongles. ZHA only allows each integration once, so you are limited to one dongle. Note that a zigbee device can only be paired to a single zigbee network, but there's nothing that stops you from running multiple networks...
Hi, Thank you for this comparison. I am wondering if you are still using ZHA when Home assistant is running in docker. Is ZHA still an option then? And how would you connect a Zigbee dongle. Or would you use some standalone dongle for this (is there anything that can be connected through ethernet)? Kind regards
You've probably figured this out by now if you still care. But yes you can use ZHA in docker with a dongle just fine. I've set it up fine with conbee and sonoff.
I'm just getting started with home assistant and holy crap there's so much to learn! I went to the Blakadder page and there are 6 different options on there. Is there a reason you only covered 2? Thanks!
@@HomeAutomationGuy Ok that makes sense. Thanks! Another question, I got an Aqara cube the other day. I paired it and it worked for about an hour before it became unavailable. I could see it in the visualization tab, but it wasn't linked to anything. Not sure how to fix that. Any ideas? Your stuff is so hopeful for us newbs trying to figure this stuff out!
Is your Aqara Cube stable? Mine does not always register that a new side is up. I can see the side both in Z2M and HA, but it is not always updated. It is not just delayed, but stays stable on the previous side.
Z2m has a lot of functionalities that werz not covered and is making the comparison very unfair for z2m, i used both, and yes zigbee2mqtt is light years ahead.

Good Video - I have a question about Zigbee Groups. ZHA is terrrible at managing RGCWW LED bulbs. Have you tried to switch more than 6 bulbs in a group? The whole network is basically unusable for a few seconds after sending the command. Now here is the real PITA this doesn't happen with same bulbs on philips hue. I tested with a friend of mine who has 60 bulbs. After adding only 8 bulbs and note all 8 bulbs was less than 1.5m from the coordinator. The same problem with group commands from ZHA. Put all the bulbs onto 2 philips hue bulbs and all bulbs respond INSTANTLY in group commands. I have this issue no matter which bulbs I use. Would love to know if you have any experience of this. BTW I tried to use the aqara occupancy sensor in kitchen where i have 6 ceiling rgbww spots and 1 led strip and 2 ikea bulbs in kitchen hood. The delays and system locking up after sending a group command for a few minutes makes the occupancy sensor useless. If you have any pointers that would be great. You would be solving the issue for 3 people in 3 different houses all having the same problem!
My biggest Zigbee group has 4 lights in it, so I've not got any particularly large ones. But again, I'm using Zigbee2MQTT for that and have not seen any locking up issues. That sounds really frustrating, I hope you find a solution!
I dont agree with the usability. If a device is not supported on ZHA your just out of luck in most cases. in z2m you can add it with an external converter. So the 1700 devices it supports is not the end of it. You can just see what the device exposes and write a little file for it and load it in as an external converter after which it works. ALso ZHA doesnt always pair a device or it takes 10 tries of pairing before it finds it completely. Where z2m always finds the device instantly without any issues if its supported
Hey! Could u help me? What do I need to turn my lights on with motion sensor? Just a smart motion sensor and a smart light? Just a smart motion sensor and a smart switch? Os all three of them? Thanks!
That compatibility list is not entirely accurate. I found a few devices which I own and use with ZHA+ConBeeII which the list says are not compatible. Linkind motions sensors come to mind.
@@HomeAutomationGuy , agreed. While it was disappointing to see a set of products widely deployed in my home not on the list, I certainly did not mean to dissuade viewers from using it. In the words of a past US President, "Trust, but verify" :)
Can someone answer a dumb noob question: I bought an Aqara E1 hub and thought that I then have a Zigbee device so I can use the Zigbee based device from Ikea. Will the E1 only work with Aqara devices? Do I need something completely different to connect any Zigbee device?
It most likely will work with most devices. Zigbee is a standard, but some manufacturers seem to use Zigbee with a dialect. Aussies and Americans both speak English, but have their own vocabulary. Same happens with some Zigbee devices and Philips Hue is infamous for it. Most 'platform specific' hubs are limited in the amount of zigbee devices they support. Most seem to really start to run into issues when you connect more than 20 devices to a single hub. People that run into similar issues often switch to the Deconz Zigbee dongle. A powerful Zigbee solution, but relative to other Zigbee hubs/dongles a bit pricey.
@@2Fast4Mellow After some time researching it seems that it is not really a ZigBee dongle but actually a USB powered hub. Only works with aqara. I've ordered a dongle
Hello guy, I have a question: in case of power loss do I need to repair each Zigbee(Zigbee2MQTT ) endpoint(sensors) by clicking the button manually (as if I am doing it for the first time)? I've read that it is necessary and this will create a lot of problems, is there are any workarounds for this? thank you
When I had a power failure 95% of my devices kept working fine. It was just a couple that stopped working and they repaired almost instantly and I didn't need to reconfigure them as if it was the first pairing, so it wasn't so bad.
Thanks for the great video! Is there a particular coordinator stick you’d recommend? I’m currently using the Sonoff Zigbee bridge with ZHA but I’m a bit worried about long term reliability due to Wi-Fi dropouts and whatnot.
Very good explanation, thank for this. It would be nice to see a How-to from you to install and setup Zigbbee2MQTT. But I guess such videos are not really in your scope, are they?
Yes, no problem at all and even more. I'm successfully running Z2M with cheap cc2531 usb stick and multiple devices acting as routers, ZHA with Sonoff ZBBridge (tasmota) and separately IKEA Tradfri network with Ikea bridge for reliability with lights. No issues at all.
I use zigbee2mqtt and can't seem to get a Philipt Hue light bulb to pair. I have a CC2652R chip as my controller. When I turn on the Philips Hue bulb it flashes rapidly, but zigbee2mqtt doesn't pair it. Thoughts? Good video, thanks.
You may need to reset it. The Zigbee2MQTT documentation for the bulb will give you some hints on how you can do that. I have on occasion had to reset them a couple of times before they work, especially if they've previously been paired elsewhere (Like a Hue hub)
@@HomeAutomationGuy Thanks. You are correct that these bulbs were previously paired with a Hue Hub. My neighbor was moving and offered the his hoard of Philips bulbs to me. Again, thanks for the insight.
Hi, i alsomtried both...i started with zha, but after the upgrade of ha to version 10 everything became incredibly convoluted requiring creation of developer accounts on some platform in china, and much more.. So i moved to zigbee2mqtt which to me seems to be finally simpler more stable and more independent on the cloud. Did you do perform this test on ha version 9 or 10, is for me zha is totally broken on 10.
Too late. I already have Philips Hue Hub, Lutron Hub, Aqara hub, and all my devices are on these hubs controlled by HA. Except for TP-Link Kasa dimmers on their own, because they are WiFi. BTW. I hate Kasa dimmers, but they are way cheaper than Lutron.
Can we use both in the same device and in the same time? I've sonoff wifi bridge, if i buy a zigbee2mqtt usb device, it can be work? i want to use some of zigbee devices with Zigbee2MQTT

But you have to remember that most people who want smart homes don't know what JSON is and how to send a payload. For those people I recommend the "boring" way 🤣

Thanks for the feedback Alexey, I appreciate it. I'll take it into account with future videos.
That's true. I did see that same issue with Aqara devices. It's a lot easier to get started though if you're new to Zigbee!
I wanted to use ZHA for the plug and play simplicity, so I went and got my first zigbee device: (TuYa PJ-ZGD01)
Not supported in ZHA and just didn't know where to start once it was paired. So moved over to Z2MQTT and it was supported (had to create a cover entitity in HA) and now it works perfectly.
Thank you for this video and Blakadder list.
Great and informative video; I live in Australia and finding it hard to find aZigbee smart plug that is ZHA compatible? Any ideas?
Unfortunately I don't know. I haven't lived in Australia for over a decade, and I didn't have any smart devices back then
Personally I don't think one is better than the other. There is no one better than the other.
is there a video/resource explaining ALL the types of zigbee, protocols, comparisons, differences?
Re-pairing is such a pain. But one day I just took a deep breath and took the plunge - I'm glad I did, I'm happy with the results.
Is this out of date? I run many brands of ZigBee kit though SmartThings hub definitely not one hub per brand
Thank you.
I use ZHA and I had to install the mqtt integration and an mqtt broker.
the main reason why I have two zigbee radios, majority of my stuff runs on ZHA while the incompatible stuff is on z2m. but once they are compatible with ZHA, ill just basically reset that device and pair it to ZHA.
its just much better if you can skip the mqtt stuff and have a direct communication on the IOT device it self.
I did not know that, that's great to know!
Did you know the z2m dont need to upload any files and check updates for philips hue automaticle if you needed too
Whenever I try to install ZHA on my Raspberry PI 4 core installation of home assistant I get an error "Could not load config flow"
I am trying to connect a wireless base module with ISM band 915 MH. I have a zigbee antenna 3.0, but I cannot detect it. Do you know why? Thanks
Thanks!
Good comparison
I switched from ZigBee2MQTT to ZHA some time ago when my dongle died .... still missing some ZigBee devices in ZHA
As I switch to HA-Yellow now I think of switching back. to ZigBee2MQTT.
Is there a possibbility to run both in parallel using an dongel for ZHA and the intergarted receiver of the Yellow for ZigBee2Mqtt?
You can do that, but be aware that the two Zigbee networks may overlap each other if you use the same channels and that could cause interference and problems.
I'm not able to use a USB stick with my HA server. Is there such a thing as a wifi zigby bridge?
Does ZHA work with a UNRAID server running Home Assistant? Has anyone tried plugging in the USB stick to an UNRAID server to test? Nice video!
I bought an smlight slzb-06 and use it also with my Unraid server with HAOS. The smlight slzb-06 is connected with PoE ethernet, USB is also possible.
Question for all Z2M users:
I just started in the HA game two days ago with HA Green and SkyConnect.
Hi, i buyed a sonoff Hub zigbee USB, c210x model. I can't do upgrade of firmware. I can use on z2mqtt? I top can't use on Zha :(
Im a beginner in this topic with a couple of devices and not sure about the nomenclature. Is a ZigBee coordinator = ZigBee gateway hub?
Ive noticed some updates to ZHA have started opening up more information from my devices. My Aqara air monitor just recently started reporting TVOC data where it wasn't recognized by ZHA before.
Yeh, it's great that the community is putting so much time and love into ZHA - it's only going to keep getting better and better!
Yeh, that's the reason I use Z2M as well.
I stumbled in one major drawback with ZHA: you can only have one broker. I live in farmhouse where I have sensors and devices in large area. So there must be some sort of meshing but I can't make it with ZHA.
That's a drawback with Zigbee overall I believe.
Thanks!
Yep! I picked the two that I've used before.
Not really, it's quite a gimmick
Z2m has a lot of functionalities that werz not covered and is making the comparison very unfair for z2m, i used both, and yes zigbee2mqtt is light years ahead.

Good starting point, I think.
But lazy me has to ask, if it is possible to use the tradfry hub as a ZigBee dongle since I have it already...
I don't think so, you'll need to use a device from the compatibility list on their website
Is the bulk of this still valid, any positive or negative updates since make a difference at all?
I still use Zigbee2MQTT!
That is true. But I think ZHA has a similar concept with Quirks? github.com/zigpy/zha-device-handlers

It is unfortunately difficult to keep a full accurate list with so many devices on the market. It's a good starting point though!
@@HomeAutomationGuy , agreed. While it was disappointing to see a set of products widely deployed in my home not on the list, I certainly did not mean to dissuade viewers from using it. In the words of a past US President, "Trust, but verify" :)
"If it aint broke, than don't fix it" which is what every tech person always does
Yeh, but we ALWAYS regret it but learn something useful in the process.
@@2Fast4Mellow
After some time researching it seems that it is not really a ZigBee dongle but actually a USB powered hub. Only works with aqara. I've ordered a dongle
you are forgetting things like separate entities vs notification events...
Hello guy, I have a question:
in case of power loss do I need to repair each Zigbee(Zigbee2MQTT ) endpoint(sensors) by clicking the button manually (as if I am doing it for the first time)?
I've read that it is necessary and this will create a lot of problems,
is there are any workarounds for this?
thank you
When I had a power failure 95% of my devices kept working fine. It was just a couple that stopped working and they repaired almost instantly and I didn't need to reconfigure them as if it was the first pairing, so it wasn't so bad.
@@HomeAutomationGuy thank you, I will test this many times and many ways I was so afraid of this, and u calmed down ❤
@@HomeAutomationGuy is this using ZHA or Z2M? I'm having a lot of trouble w 108 devices using ZHA

Thanks for the great video!
Is there a particular coordinator stick you’d recommend? I’m currently using the Sonoff Zigbee bridge with ZHA but I’m a bit worried about long term reliability due to Wi-Fi dropouts and whatnot.
I'm pretty happy with my Slaesh's cc2652rb stick!
Very good explanation, thank for this. It would be nice to see a How-to from you to install and setup Zigbbee2MQTT. But I guess such videos are not really in your scope, are they?
I'm actually working on this video right now, watch this space!
can we install zigbee2mqtt AND zha (both) in Ha ? thanks
Possibly if you have two USB sticks and dedicate one to each platform, but I honestly have never tried it.
I did it on HA version 2021.10
Zha is so easy and reliable
Zha wouldn't stay connected to most of my battery powered devices. Switched to zigbee2mqtt and the problems were instantly fixed. Zha is garbage.
Zigbee group? How to do this groupp
Which platform are you using?
@@HomeAutomationGuy same question.. I use ZHA... but planning to move to Tuya integration
In ZHA there is a tab at the top called Groups. You can configure them there
