@thenerdshow that is good to know that it will run on 120v. From what I understand a lot of these devices that are usually designed around a 220v-240v grid don't always work on the NA 120v grid.
There is a new NSPanel Pro 120 version with a larger screen. I am using it with HA and it has been great. The steps required to side load apps on it are a little bit more complicated, but you will only need to do this once, so it’s totally worth it. Once you have fully kiosk installed, don’t forget to disable the Use Wide Viewport option so you can enable the Initial Scale option and set it to 200%. I created a custom dashboard and it is awesome!
The Shelly display looks amazing and will definitely have to pick one up. I won't touch the Sonoff, I don't give money to companies who make it hard for open platforms like Home Assistant, it just reinforces their bad behavior. Also requiring to sign it into an app is already a hard pass for me. Give the Shelly Dev team some kind feedback about the bar at the bottom and maybe they can update it in the future. Great video!
Just FYI - you don't even need to sign up for Sonoff. You can just download the app, use guest mode without registration, add the display, enable ADB and then uninstall the app.
I went with the NSPanel Pro, and am looking forward to the new 120 model with the larger screen. The shelly really didn't cut it for me. I don't like its looks, the aluminium frame around it, and I'm loosing too much screen space with the permanent taskbar at the bottom that I'll never use. Setting up the NSPanel Pro is done within 15 minutes of running a couple commands, as you showcased. Looks sleek. No wasted screen space. The proxmitiy sensor is really nice so the screen only turns on when you actually need it. Also, it's cheaper.
Same for me. The bottom bar takes valuable space on already small display and since I'm not using Shelly ecosystem at all, I want the device to be 100% locked into Home Assistant, so other people can't mess with it. Fully Kiosk is therefore perfect for this.
Thanks for the video, I had previously not considered using these in my house and was looking at putting tablets in rooms, but after buying one and setting this up I have changed my mind. Thanks for the clear and easy to follow videos.
I would love to try these but the down side of owning a brick wall is that, if want the wall displays to be at eye level, you have to break your wall :p . Where your switches already at the right height, or is your house build out of wood?
@@ArneVanhove The ones by the bed were already at the right height, but I had some others put in at a higher than switch height. Luckily the electricians were able to run the power from a nearby switch or outlet and the wall is made of plasterboard so they could fish the cable through and mount the back boxes.
@@ArneVanhove no its brick but we are going through a reform so not a problem, but to be honest the display has a really good viewing angle so even at normal light switch level you can see them.
I think the Shelly display is perfect with the combined Shelly menu and Home Assistant option. The display can now easily replace the main light switch in every room. In case Home Assistant, or WiFi, is down, you still can control the main light of the room directly! Our intention is to build a new home and I was looking for compact screens which can be use with Home Assistant for every room. So this maybe the perfect solution. For now I have bought 1 piece to test it in our current house.
I had mix of brands at home but now I am switching everything to Shelly. Gen3 and Pro are insane due build in scripting, KNX and BTHome support, Home Assistant integration, MQTT and Node Red(third party) support. In future I plan to use Shelly Wall Display too.
Electrician here. It is absolutely fine to use flex directly in the clamp type terminal built into the Shelly screen. A ferrule is required to protect the flex strands from damage when used in a terminal where the screw tip would be in direct contact with the flex strands.
I have the SONOFF NSPanel Pro and was able to display a HA dashboard WITHOUT all the steps described here. It was in a video from Smart Home Australia where he describes how to use the app that works with the panel (eWeLink) and you go to the area in the app where you set up web pages to view on the panel and simply enter the local IP of your HA. Then on the panel you go to where the web pages set up by the app are and tap on the icon for HA and login to HA and the dashboard appears. Granted after a power failure or an update to the panel you will have to manually get back to the HA page but it took literally 5 minutes or less to set it up and without the hassle of all those commands and sideloading of apps.
I came here to mention this too. It is really nice that sonoff pro supports web pages directly. You can also setup multiple pages. You can swipe to go through different home assistant dashboards
Thanks you. Great video. 👏 Questions: In the UK, what is the minimum depth do you recommend for the back box? What depth are yours? What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a ethernet cable POE powered screen? Is it possible because of the electricity needed to power up the screen?
Hi, the shelly is a no-go for me because of the bottom toolbar like you said. Shelly is however a much better company than the sonoff (i use both in my house). My question is if there's a performance difference between them?
I use my old phone connected to a smart outlet that charges it up to 80% and let's it drain to 5% and then charges it back up again, the dashboard is displayed through the wallpanel app, and home assistant companion app is also running that helps regulate stuff like the screen brightness, turning it off and on when I'm in the room or not, for stuff not available through home assistant app, I use macrodroid webhooks, pretty satisfied with my setup so far, the biggest advantage is that nice AMOLED screen of my old phone, :D

I would say, not very accurate. But they sell a bundle with a remote Temperature and Humidity sensor that you can pair to it to get more accurate results.
It is a known problem, that the internal temp sensor of the shelly, got heaten by the processors. I think, this is the reason why a lot of users (EU) which bought a wall display, got a free code for an external sensor
I like the original NSPanel which has two relays and two physical buttons. It can't display the full lovelace ui but that isnt a dealbreaker for me as I use it mostly to control lights, monitor energy consumption and stuff like this. I use it to control my underfloor heating with on of the relays and have only the other relay toggled by one of the physical switches.

I have the ns panel pro and sideloaded the HA app on it. I also bought the stand and have it on my desk, that way I can control anything in my home from there. I also have my reolink wifi doorbell display on it when someone rings
This is excatly what I have been looking for to have small table stop screens around my house. I like your desk mount. Any chances they are posted to a 3d print site?
I used one for the NS Panel Pro from printables.com, there are a bunch of options there and it worked fine for the Shelly too... after a bit of filing and sanding 🤣
Sonoff NS. Followed the instruction but the WebView simply will not update or show other versions installed. Attempted various differing installs and versions so it looks like another thing for the bin. The Sonoff is brand new but with an old v60 WebView on it. Hey Ho.
Great video as usual 👍 I was wondering if the Shelly can be converted in the same way as the Sonoff, so it could be used in full-screen mode without the Shelly interface?
Does the Shelly only have a single relay in it? If it had two to act as a two gang light switch replacement, that would be a no brainer replacement for a few of my Aqara H1 switches.
Would the Shelly also display any other dashboard-URL eg openHab instead of HA..? 4:23 To me it seems that this is a pure browser-view of any entered website, correct?
The main reason I found is that power supply for tablet is usb so you would need to fit a usb adapter in the wall. Then you would also have the visible usb cable in the tablet with on the side of the tablet. If you get a fully enclosed wall mount, the bezels become too big. Also, it's not a seamless fit with a tablet compared to replacing a switch. You can just about find poe powered tablets but they are very low quality
Also it's not good to have tablets / phone charging 24/7. I used an old phone to run a music server and the battery ended up being so bloated it pushed the back panel off the phone. Of course this can be avoided by using a smart plug to only charge as needed, but then you've got a smart plug / charger / tablet rather than one device neatly fitted into the wall. Then again, those wall displays tend to need a neutral wire which light switches (at least in the UK) don't tend to have.
You don't need ferrules on stranded wires in such clamps. This is only necessary, if the screw goes directly on the wires. In most of these clamps, there is already a small piece of metal that is pushed down by the screw and clamps the strands, not the screw directly. (I wrote this, when I saw the clamps of the shelly.)
Ferrules do give it a nice look though, and if you're like many of us who try a few different devices before landing on one for a while, it keeps the tiny strands from being destroyed after a few cycles of product swaps.
If Unifi would just add the Connect display functionality to their Intercom Viewer, we'd have a nice POE powered display that could show a Lovelace dashboard, but they won't do it :(
I have an NS Panel PRo and have it log in to my HA from the web browser and it works, displaying my phone view that I set up. None of the extra stuff needed but if it is turned off I do need to click on to the web page to load it.
Both of those are just running HA in their browser, correct? What about running the HA app, which provides sensors that might be useful for some automations?
Yes, correct. They're running it in some sort of browser. The HA App can be sideloaded on the Sonoff with the adb install command quite easily, but I didn't see any value in adding all that overhead as I couldn't find a reason to use the sensors. Which sensors would you want to use and why? Maybe I can learn something!
@@jacek_790 having the Fully Kiosk and the Browser mod integrations installed you have everything you need to control the devices and make automations. There’s no need for the HA app.
@@HomeAutomationGuy I don't have anything in particular in mind, but I think there's a proximity sensor and a light sensor, both I imagine could be used in automations on a panel.
@@HomeAutomationGuy I wonder if you get better performances or unlock video streaming by using the app ? (I sideloaded the app from the start so I didn't try to compare)
how many different lighting groups can you control with these, ie traditionally you may have between 1 and 6 different switches to control different light groups in a room. Is that possible with these?
I wish these panels were available in the US, especially the Shelly. The Sonoff used to be at a reasonable price but I can’t find it anymore (at a reasonable price, anyway).
What would be the benefit of this vs tablet? Looks like tablet is not much more expensive while bigger estate and full configurability. Just wondering as I’m facing a decision on this.
Easier to power them on a wall, it's hard to get USB power to the middle of a wall. They can act as a switch to physically connect or disconnect the power to the light (for the Shelly anyway). They're not as conspicous as a giant tablet on the wall. I use tablets in other places, these are just great for some use cases - like the side of my bed.
I had dismissed these are not particulary useful for me as I always have my phone with me, however I am thinking this might make a good alarm panel display using Alarmo for use at the front door..
First off, I bought both my SONOFF NSPanel devices in the UK. They both have a relay to control lights the old-fashioned way. Yes, I did have to “hack” my panels. Yes, it is a pain to have to update the Blackymas blueprint and TFT with every update of ESP home. That being said, I find them to be themed better than the default home assistant panels. I can't compare responsiveness because I've not tried the Shelly, but the responsiveness is good enough for my living room.
@@HomeAutomationGuy i posted a comment and i think youtube ate it because it included a link. It's the difference between the NSPANEL and the NSPANEL PRO. I'm not sure what the PRO was in removing the switches? I guess more real estate?
They may be nice for the houses which have paper/Sheetrock walls, but here most of the people have concrete walls. There you cannot open a giant hole and connect a wire to that. A Tablet like device with battery would also be nice..
Which firmware you had on the nspanel pro? I just updated the os and the software to the latest and afraid it won’t be that easy to get access to the adb.
How dark do these go (can the screen be switched off completely)? My wife needs total darkness to sleep so would be a deal breaker even though they look ideal
It is still possible on nspanelpro, but you have guest delete files from the system partition as they (deliberately?!?) don't give you enough space now to side load.... Easy enough to delete some app files though and then you're good to go.
Sadly it doesn't look like Shelly is offering the Wall Display in the US .. yet? The Sonoff NS Pro 120 is available and I may try on of those, but I've had reliability issues with the Sonoff products I have, so they would definitely be a less desirable solution.
Mine were too, and thankfully there was enough room in the wall to get them replaced when I got my smart switches installed. It wasn't cheap though, and some of them only juuuust fit.
I'm missing an option to control the brightness of the shelly wall display. It would be nice, if I could rise the brightness, if a presence detects a person.
17 วันที่ผ่านมา
Would be nice if they provided backplates so they could be put on a stand or mounted on the wall with a plug for those of us with apartments where you can't just cut a massive hole in the wall 😅 I guess you can just wire up a plug and put a box on it, but something nicer would be great.
Not sure why you went through the convoluted ADB route for the Sonoff, all you need to do is run Home Assistant from the web browser that is built in and a Home Assistant panel displays perfectly. The only difference is that the web browser route has a small back tool bar across the top, but this can be filled with a title, such as Bedroom Control or whatever you want. But it gets the Sonoff up and running as a Home Assistant panel with minimal fuss and no need to follow a long list of instructions.
This is what i did too. Only downside is rebooting doesnt launch the browser again. And no presence detection to turn on the screen u have to tap it. Am using them as zigbee routers too would you loose this with ADB? I do wonder if the response time of the browser is faster with the ADB route?
The performance is better using Fully Kiosk, and it boots up directly to the Home Assistant dashboard. You can use the presence detection to turn on and off the screen using the NS Panel Pro Tools or the options in Fully Kiosk.
Does it work with HTTPS or does it also work with HTTP (even if it gives a cert error). I've set-up HA with DuckDNS but i only have a certificate for my duck dns url.
I've been looking at panels but the problem with all of them, including genetic smart pads, is obsolescence. Within a few years Home Assistant or it's add-ons or integrations will require a level of OS or browser that the panel no longer supports and then some features will no longer work. I have that issue now with the 10 year old wall-mounted mini iPad I've been using for my HVAC control and only recently converted to Home Assistant. Features like slide controls in the Home Assistant app don't respond at all and there are other annoying glitches that are not present on more recent devices. The only affordable solution I see is to limit the number of fixed panels and budget to replace them every 5 or 10 years and rely on personal smart phones for roaming control instead of fixed bedside/couchside panels.
Can you activate the shelly relay with the double click gesture when it is displaying the HA dashboard? How about dimming when not in use, is the panel always on or it turns on only when you go nearby?
I would prefer to have these panels with a hard switch like in NS Panel, so that even if home assistant is down, I can turn on or off the lights connected to the switch.
@@HomeAutomationGuy now that's what I like to hear. I do agree that the shelly does seem the better device but I do like the openness of sonoff to act as a mini web kiosk. You could have it look at a homarr web page for all the stuff.
The information on their website is very limited. it apprears you do NOT have access to both the NO and NC contacts of the relay. They name the connections (besides "L" and "N" - "O" and "SW"
No, but you can put a battery powered switch on the other "side", and create an automation that changes the Shelly switch when you press the remote button.
I'm amazed (and disappointed) that nobody has made a plug-and-play, android+chrome+fully kiosk ready-to-go device. Plug into power and enter the URL. Sure, the larger companies like Sonoff and Shelly want to keep you in their ecosystems (though unlike, say, Amazon) they don't have significant subscription revenue so I doubt they're subsidizing these displays. But what about the random Chinese companies that make these types of displays?
In many use cases (Like beside my bed) a giant tablet stuck to the wall looks bad and is very hard to provide power to. Tablets are great, just not everywhere.
Love how easy shelly makes it. Be nice if they gave an option for the bottom taskbar to minimise & to swipe up from the bottom if required.
Maybe if we hassle them enough with a feature request they'll do it
If they have a North American version with that feature, I'd purchase as soon as I knew it existed.

I have the ns panel pro and sideloaded the HA app on it. I also bought the stand and have it on my desk, that way I can control anything in my home from there. I also have my reolink wifi doorbell display on it when someone rings
I was in two minds about whether to use the companion app or Fully Kiosk. How is the performance of it?
This is excatly what I have been looking for to have small table stop screens around my house. I like your desk mount. Any chances they are posted to a 3d print site?
I used one for the NS Panel Pro from printables.com, there are a bunch of options there and it worked fine for the Shelly too... after a bit of filing and sanding 🤣
Sonoff NS. Followed the instruction but the WebView simply will not update or show other versions installed. Attempted various differing installs and versions so it looks like another thing for the bin. The Sonoff is brand new but with an old v60 WebView on it. Hey Ho.
I recommend sideloading nspanel tools, really opens up what you can do with the sonoff
I actually did do that too, I just ran out of time to add it to the vide.
Hi, is there any issues long term wiring the Shelly Wall Display upto a standard 3pin wall plug?
Great video as usual 👍
I was wondering if the Shelly can be converted in the same way as the Sonoff, so it could be used in full-screen mode without the Shelly interface?
Possibly, it is an Android tablet after all.
What advantage of using these panels rather than just wall mounting a tablet. Seems like what you would want since just using it to view ha dashboards
Ferrules are always better. You should always use ferrules
Great to hear! Thanks for the tip about using the built in browser.
Is the Shelly Wall Display avaliable in the US? I can't find it anywhere online, I've checked Amazon and Shelly's website.
That's a shame - maybe they'll import to there soon!
They will need to reengineer the panel for NA boxes. Can’t just import like the relays sadly.
It's nice for guests, and it also means I don't need to unlock my phone, open the app, find the right dashboard for that room ...
Did you get the NSPanel Pro devices? I didn't know they came with relays
@@HomeAutomationGuy i posted a comment and i think youtube ate it because it included a link. It's the difference between the NSPANEL and the NSPANEL PRO. I'm not sure what the PRO was in removing the switches? I guess more real estate?
but the NSPANEL is 67 quid right now, I'd rather not go PRO. :P
I think the taskbar at the bottom of the shelly goes against their ethos and would be a showstopper for me.
Do you know if the shelly display is available in US (as in UL rated)?
Is there an option to use the Shelly panel in home kit via matter?
They may be nice for the houses which have paper/Sheetrock walls, but here most of the people have concrete walls. There you cannot open a giant hole and connect a wire to that. A Tablet like device with battery would also be nice..
That shelly wall display is pretty cool!
I guess the relay can be controlled from Home Assistant?
It sure can, it works perfectly in HA like any other Shelly smart relay
I wish there was Australian switch size instead of square versions like the US I assume.
I can't find a single Shelly Wall display on Amazon to purchase. Can you please direct me to the link?
Sadly it's not available in the US
Great video, its a pain that all my wall back boxers are shallow. Wish all would good deep nowerdays.
Would be nice if they provided backplates so they could be put on a stand or mounted on the wall with a plug for those of us with apartments where you can't just cut a massive hole in the wall 😅
I guess you can just wire up a plug and put a box on it, but something nicer would be great.
This is where 3D printing might come in handy? But I am not sure the legality of using 3D printed stuff with mains voltage electricity.
@@HomeAutomationGuy How did you get the presence detection to work?
@@NeilSleightholm Using the NSPanel Pro Tools app. You can find it on GitHub
Bedside controls without the need to unlock and navigate around my phone a 5am, nice
It just feels so fancy
Does it work with HTTPS or does it also work with HTTP (even if it gives a cert error). I've set-up HA with DuckDNS but i only have a certificate for my duck dns url.
It works with HTTP as well
I've been looking at panels but the problem with all of them, including genetic smart pads, is obsolescence.
So the sonoff is more complicated, don’t have a relay and cost the same?
The Shelly wall display says: Power supply: 230 VAC, 50/60Hz
Which means it can’t be used in USA with 120v.
That's correct
Can you activate the shelly relay with the double click gesture when it is displaying the HA dashboard? How about dimming when not in use, is the panel always on or it turns on only when you go nearby?
You can adjust the dimming options in the device settings, and you can use any HA control or automation to control the switch.
@@HomeAutomationGuy Thanks :)
did you find that fully kiosk work better than HA companion app on he NSPanel Pro?
I find it works faster as there is less overhead, but you lose access to the HA Companion App Sensors.
what about the aqara ones?
I have not tried those yet - perhaps it's something for another video?
Does the Shelly work with out a neutral wire?
No, it does not
I would prefer to have these panels with a hard switch like in NS Panel, so that even if home assistant is down, I can turn on or off the lights connected to the switch.
I agree with that, it makes a lot of sense.
Will this work for Homey pro users too?
Sorry, I don't know. I've never used it
How new is the Shelly Wall Display? Their USA store doesn't even have it....
I don't think it's available in the US at the moment.
Do you feel like adb is opening it up in a dangerous way or can you turn it off once you have your works complete?
You can also firewall it off to only allow it from certain IPs
@@HomeAutomationGuy now that's what I like to hear. I do agree that the shelly does seem the better device but I do like the openness of sonoff to act as a mini web kiosk. You could have it look at a homarr web page for all the stuff.
Can you use this with a 2 way switch? I have 2 light switches in my living room that control the same light?
The information on their website is very limited. it apprears you do NOT have access to both the NO and NC contacts of the relay.
They name the connections (besides "L" and "N" - "O" and "SW"
Not really. Its only open or closed relay.
I don't see the Shelly Wall display sold on Amazon USA or Shelly USA. Am I missing something?
Same, I think they are for the UK or outside the US only right now.
@@Obtuse94 Thanks, I wondered that, too. Too bad!
They're for sure in the UK, EU and Australia. Not sure about the US sorry
Shelly wall display is the only certified wall display in Australia which is required for electricians certificate + insurance
Thanks a lot for this video, it's sad to see that Sonoff doesn't support HA natively, it's a lost opportunity for a lot more customers.
I agree, but it's nice to compare the options!
@@HomeAutomationGuy I agree.
Why would this be better than just using an android tablet, what advantage does it have?
Cleaner install, and it can run off 240v without having to be recharged. Leaving an Android tablet plugged in 24/7 isn't the safest option
i would like the Shelly Wall Display, but there is no US version of it
Will the steps work for the NS Panel Pro 120?
I've not tried it.
It would be cool if they were flashable with open source firmware, shellys usually are 🤔
What about for the US?
I don't know, sorry
2:43 nothing wrong with wiring in without ferrules. I'm a qualified electrician. You need to be worried about the cord grip
Just tie a knot in it, right? 😉
Do you have a link to that desktop mount?
I've added it to the description now
Thanks. I need it for my hive thermostat which has been laying on top of a cupboard for about 2 years now. 😢
@@JasGawera I've actually seen specific ones on printables.com for Hive thermostats. That may be a better solution
Does that smart switch work offline?
It does
Honest question. Why to spend 120 for such a small screen when I can get a whole tablet for the same price ?
In many use cases (Like beside my bed) a giant tablet stuck to the wall looks bad and is very hard to provide power to. Tablets are great, just not everywhere.
What was wrong with wiring it up that way?
Is this better then esphome?
ESPHome can't show the detailed dashboards from HA as far as I know.
I’m so sad you skipped my NSPanel pro tools app to mention.😢 😊
I was considering making it it's own video 🤫
I want a NA version that fits into a double gang box!
