I'm a little late to the game on this. I'm an avid Audioholic consumer, but I missed this. I have been running RBH 1266 towers for years. When I moved I lost wall space and the sub had to go. I set the towers to full range and bass plus but I was never really satisfied with the solution, even running with a power amp. I then bit the bullet, purchased a crown XLS 1002, decoupled the binding post and set the tower to small and use the built-in 12" drivers as dedicated LFE subs and my system sounds amazing again! Great explanation and options, Gene!

One thing to consider on the Def Tech towers and center channels when deciding how to set them up, either full range or small is this. Gene you mention setting them up as small with LFE will give you better bass control than having them set to large. But, at least on the Def Tech 9000 series, each left and right and center channel has bass management controls on the rear of each speaker. A dial with 1-10, to set the bass output. In my opinion, that negates the necessity to use the LFE out put. I don’t know if Golden Ear or other large fronts have this feature, but I like this feature on the Def Techs.

With my Polk RT3000p, after trying different options, I ran subwoofer cable from AVR to each of the towers. I incorporated a MiniDSP to tune them in with my 18" Marty's and the sound and bass was significantly better. The powered subs in the towers are no where near the other subs, but by adjusting them individually to work with more of the mid and higher bass in the 60-90 Hz range and the monster subs hitting hard in the 60 Hz with more pressureization and dig down to 14 jz in my room.

I have Def Tech BP7001sc mains, CLR3000 center, Def Tech BP/VXp sides and BP7002 rears with a sunfire true signature sub. I run all speakers as large because they all have powered subs and LFE out to the sunfire. However in running all speakers as large that allows me to control my crossover point without setting them to small and being stuck with 80hz. I bought large speakers to use them, if I set them to small I would've just bought satellites. I crossover the front mains at 40hz and everything else at 60. This was chosen after using RTA and FFT analysis for the smoothest blend with the sub.

I’ve been using the RBH SX-T2/R and SVT towers for a while. I set them to small, XO = 120Hz, connect speaker wires from pre-pro to top cabinets, connect line cable from Sub Output of Pre-pro to external sub amp then speaker wire from ext amp to the bottom bass cabinets.

I'm running 6 Paradigm Shift A2 powered bookshelves that get their signal from an Asus Essence STX II 7.1 sound card. The LFE goes out to a Paradigm DSP-3100 with a Paradigm MC1 powered by a Dayton "T" amp handling the center channel. I keep the bass management set at "small" with it crossed over at 69hz.

Thank you so much for the informative video! I recently bought a pair of definitive technology bp9060's for my L/R channels to match with the CS-9060 center. Using the Denon X4500H. Should I choose your 3rd option by setting them to Large, Sub On along with the small pioneer 8" subwoofer I currently use? Maybe disconnect the sub and just use the towers as my living room isn't that big. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Great video! I have been looking for this info for months. Current setup, denon x3200, lfe only at 120 hz to svs pb-2000, 8060 towers speaker wire only set to large at full band, cs8040 set to small at 60 hz. a60 set to small at 200 hz. dynamic volume off and dynamic eq on with reference offset to 0. I will try adding a splitter and lfe to the 8060 towers as well to see how that changes the sound. Great info! I have read you should set the crossover 10 hz above the lowest range of the speaker. So I set mine at 60hz. my reciever only gives my 40, 60, 80 or 120 and so on. Sometimes I notice port chuffing on the sub with dynamic eq on. I turned down the gain on the sub and this eliminated the problem.

I spilt one sub out to the powered towers and the other sub out to the free standing sub. I tried the 80hz and found it best for my chair at around 86 hz. Using Sony amp at 200 watts RMS . Speakers sent to large.

    • @IkariWarrior1701
      @IkariWarrior1701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tyson Hook right now I have it set to just LFE...I run the main as large to get some use out of the woofers in the towers and to help spread out some of the bass...it sounds fine but I am always tweaking it...getting powered towers and a large sub perfectly tuned in a small room is tough...it's not like video where there is a test pattern and you just calibrate it..with audio, and especially bass, there are just so many factors to deal with. Add to that that I only have one location I can put the subwoofer...it can be tough to balance everything out

Hello Gene ; I had 2 - 60 inch Pioneer Elite Plasma and a 60 inch Panasonic ZT 60 in my man cave above garage. On December 10, 2018 an electrical fire broke out. My Definitive Tech speakers and everything I owned burned to the ground. A 2200 square foot single family home was gone. Because I’m paralyzed from a broken neck in 3 places 30 years ago, I was trapped upstairs. With fire burning everywhere, I dove head first down the stairs and was knocked unconscious and woke in black smoke unable to see or breath. I heard a fireman yell my name and yelled - dont leave me and passed out - they found me but I’d stopped breathing and cpr was needed as they dragged me out the door and the home collapsed. I’ve lost everything and just returned home from UNC BURN CENTER after weeks in COMA and 3 months total. I’m looking at DEF TECH 9020,S AND PRO 1000S AND whatever you can suggest. Thanks
    William

I tried out your advice. I just got a pair of the Definitive Technology BP8080st's. My Marantz receiver is set to large for the towers. I set the subwoofer to "On". The "Subwoofer Mode" is set to just "LFE". I left the crossover at the default of 120hz. Then I ran the "Subwoofer Out" line level connection to the "LFE" input on the back of the speakers. I use the receiver controls under the "subwoofer mode" to raise or lower "LFE" level. The low level bass has a much greater impact like this. Thank you!

QUESTION: I like the idea of setting speakers to Large and allowing the subwoofer to focus exclusively on the LFE signal. But, I do realize speakers usually can't go lower than 35hz. So, I had a question about using two separate subwoofers to work with the Front Speakers. The LFE signal would still being going to the first two subwoofers. And the 16-gauge speaker wire would be going to the two Front Speakers that are set on Large. Would it be possible to use the Front Left Output to send the Front Left signal to the Front Left Subwoofer and use the Front Right Output to send the Front Right signal to the Front Right Subwoofer? ... This would theoretically allow the two LFE channels to output the LFE signal, while he Front Left and Front Right speakers set to Large would output sound as low as they can go, while the Front Left Subwoofer and Front Right Subwoofer would receive the entire Left and Right signals, but only output sound below the Crossover Frequency - which I would personally set at 50hz. ... Is that correct? ... Would that setup work as I described?

I am running 4 Def Tech BP2002 with a Def Tech PF 18 TL sub. I just updated to a AVR-X4700H receiver. Right now the best sounding hook up I have found is running LEF input, large speaker setting, and the low range jumpers removed. I have two questions, that Def Tech could not answer. The first question is can I run full range with the low and mid jumpers installed, while running LFE? My second question is if I have to take out the lower jumpers will my Frequency Response of 18Hz to 30kHz change. When I asked Def Tech they said it would not change. But I don't see how it can't change with the lowers removed from the circuit. The reason I asked is so I could determine the correct cross over range up the highs and mid when I have the receiver set to small speakers.

LSi 25s. Thanks for confirming my suspicions for proper setup of powered towers where the passive drivers are on a built-in HPF, and the system has a separate subwoofer(s).
There is an old Audyssey thread (audyssey.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/212345563-Polk-LSI-25-s-say-set-to-Large) where an LSi 25 owner is instructed to set to small. I think the rep from Audyssey didn't appreciate the fact that the passive drivers in these loud speakers roll off at 80hz.

Can fully powered / active speakers such as the Kii Three or the Dutch & Dutch 8c also be used in a HT setting? I would like to use those as "normal" speakers for 2-ch music listening but also as FL and FR speakers for watching movies and listening to multi-ch music recordings. The other multi-ch speakers would be passive, i.e. two used as SL and SR and four used as atmos / height channels. The setup would be 5.x.4; x obviously being the number of subs, still to be decided.
Assuming a certain latency because all the DSP calculations that need to be done in the active speakers, are surround sound processors able to correct for the difference between the active and passive speakers and the video (lip sync issues)?
    Thank you for your feedback.

Need your opinion. Finally settling after military retirement and looking to get a decent setup. I have a Marantz SR5010, Pair of DT 9040s (just picked them up on craigslist) and an SVS SB2000 as well as some other surrounds. My question is regarding the 9040s and SVS sub: The 9040s alone sound really good and provide surprisingly good base for their size. Would you recommend also adding the SB2000 to this system or use the 9040s without the SVS sub? If you would incorporate the sub, then how do you recommend connecting the speakers? Could you do a Y-splitter on one of the LFE outputs and use the other LFE for the the SVS Sub? Look forward to hearing from you or anyone else who might have some experience with this scenario. Thanks

I have DefTec 9020's in my starter home theater. Reading many articles about acoustic panels most recommend placing behind the main speakers. However these towers have rear firing 3.5" midrange speakers at the top where panels would be placed. in this case should i forgo the rear panels?

I'm running the DefTech ST powered sub speakers and they require a plug in for the bass. If I were to use the LFE connection from my receiver, do I still need to plug the speaker in or will the receiver now power the bass speaker? I use the Denon 4100. Thanks for the help.

Is there a way of using my active studio speakers as my front L & R from my home theatre Amp? I'm currently using my active speakers for my drum kit and passive speakers for the home theatre. I was hoping I could loose the passive speakers and just use the active ones. Any ideas ? Many thanks.

I have 2 Def tech bp9020 and I have them connected the first way you mentioned. I'm going to change it to your recommendation. (Low+lfe) I also have a def tech cs9040 and I'm trying to figure out what I should do for rear speakers. These are the 2 options I'm considering: 1. Buy 2 bookshelf speakers and a sub or 2. Buy 2 bp9080s and put them as fronts and move the 9020s to the rear and buy no sub. I have a Denton AVRX1400. What do you guys think? I'm a newbie btw so Intry to follow all your recommendations

I would recommend 2 bi-pole surrounds with high sensitivity (look at some Mirage Omni sats or their Nanosats or the Klipsch RP-150S)(remember it doesn't matter a lot if it's not the same brand for surrounds) and 2 12" subs, unless you want the 9080s for their Atmos modules.

So I have a Denon X6200W AVR. My mains at DT BP7002 and Center is DT CLR 2500. Right now running as SMALL. I do have a Klipsch SW-115. So I have SUB set to ON. I am using LFE only not LFE+Main. I have crossover for mains at 40hz and center 60hz. This sound about right? Also just using speaker wire connections to fronts and center.

I just bought the def tech 9060 towers, along with their center CS9060 and 2 SR9040's for the rears. Also bought a SVS PB 2000, still working on configuring them and don't really know what I am doing, any advice would be appreciated! Also using a Denon AVR-S920W receiver and I am using the LFE in the 2 towers, so total of 3 subwoofers for my setup.

Gene, does this video apply to me if I got powered towers with built-in subwoofers + 2 stand alone subs? If so, what's the best way you would think to hook it up to get max performance? thanks

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

This is challenging. I'd hook the internal subs of your towers and your 2 external subs all to the sub out of your processor. I'd recommend getting an mDSP unit to EQ and manage the bass.

If the subs built into your towers have similar output capabilities as your stand alone subs, use them as dedicated subs too.

I have four active Klipsch XF-48 speakers connected to the pre out of my Marantz 6010. Also I have a 450C center speaker and one Klipsch R-115SW in my setup. I did use Audyssey XT32 because this is a living room and not dedicated.

    Hello,
I wanna ask you something. My room has 300 square feet and the setup is Mains Definitive technology BP9060, Center channel BP960, all them sat to large in the AV.
In ceilling dolby atmos martin logan Helos 12. sat to SMALL, surrond back in ceiling Martin logan electromotion R paired with a Rel T5X FOR High Level frequency, SAT to LARGE and also this sub is connected to LFE to the AV.
I want to ad one more sub for LFE, to get more punch in my room, and i am thinking to install a REL HT1250 or a REL S510, i Cant install a 1510 predator because i dont have space betwwen the speaker and TV cabinet, would you ad one more SUB? and, which one would you install just for LFE input?
And Because that i already have a REL sub, is not fine to mix brands, because instead of the two rels that i asked you, i would install a SVS SB3000, but i think it wouldnt be a good idea.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Gene,
What are the risks and rewards of wiring GoldenEar Triton Three (Gen 1) towers (8 Ohms) with 6 Ohm Speakers (Aiwa SX-N999) to the Left and Right (shared on binding posts) of any amplifier.
Ideally I want to route LR signals twice one pair to GoldenEar Tritons, another to the Aiwa's. But the AVR software doesn't allow that, so I ended up using Aiwa SX-N999 as LR front presence speakers (on 1 foot stands). Which seems limiting and is DSP dependent. I rather have known LR sounds replicated twice.
I do this, because it creates a wall of sound with all speakers playing at the same time. This also allows me flexibility to sit on the floor or higher on a seat and sound envelope stays immersive.
Will parallel wiring damage either Triton Towers or Aiwa monitors?
Or damage the Yamaha RX-A840 AVR.
Is there a better way to achieve this? With wiring or with additional equipment?
I know this is an unusual setup, but it fills the room.
    HiFi Setup
    Yamaha RX-A840
    GoldenEar Triton Three (Front LR)
    Aiwa SX-N999 (Front LR Presence)
    GoldenEar SuperSat 50C (Center)

Fee like kid in a candy store who just won a porche and is scared to drive it!
(Also have an HK 330 "Nocturne" with Zone 2 capable reciever, and a RCA RT2911-1000w x 7 reciever if that can help in the integration. If its even possible to do without shutting down or blowing the grid...."

I'm going to be using Status Acoustic Titus legacy in a tri amped active set up bypassing all internal passive crossovers. Then Atlas on the rear each with a 12" sub. 6 10" Isobaric subs in each Titus. What is the best setting for this? I assume it is large/on. Then rear to small. Use the large fronts to send lfe to the deqx to distribute the signals and I can amplify the lfe there as needed. Then the sub on would have The processor lfe going to the two rear Atlas subs?

    • @Audioholics

Wow nice setup! Not sure I would bypass the XOVER as the designer put forth some great effort to get the drivers to integrate optimally. I would discuss this with RBH Sound. Call them and ask for the designer Shane Rich.

Sorry reposting because I need some urgent advice:
Hey Audioholics community. I'm looking to buy my first subwoofer and am looking at a used Boston Acoustics PV800. It's 12 inches, 300watts and $250 AUD which seems to be a pretty good deal. However I am concerned because the sub is about 15 years old. How would this factor into my decision? Could it be worn out? Is 300watts back then likely to be inefficient and not as powerful as 300watts today? I do have the opportunity to inspect before buying. Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Hello how you been!
I was wondering if you could answer some questions that i have... i have a 2 floor house not so big but i want to install a Onkyo TX-RZ810 in the second floor and for the zone 2 speakers ... cable to first floor many meters maybe 50m to reach my livingroom and then in this spot, set a pir of Definitive Tech tower speakers with subwoofer integrated... the thing is to keep my AV receiver on second floor and communicate by the wifi with my phone... and use the AV receiver also as a 5.1 home theater for movies upstairs...
The question is about if you have any idea of this equipment and if you recommend to do what i described or should i go for wireless systems like SONOS for example! ... i was wondering if zone 2 of the amplifier have sub woofer output too ... i am not sure...
Well hope you can answer me and give me an advice! Thanks!

I am running Def Tech BP8060's as my towers and CS8060 for a center. I also have a SVS PB13-Ultra as an additional powered sub. My amp (Marantz 7008) has 2 LFE outputs. I am currently running one LFE to the SVS and the other LFE to the 2 towers through a Y splitter. Is this what you would recommend for wiring and bass management? I have very good sound quality but am having a difficult time setting up the bass. Either not enough or too boomy (if that is a word) Really hard to find that sweet spot.

  • @Farfignewton29

    I have a 7.2 setup:
    Receiver: Marantz sr7008
    Center: DefTech CS-8080HD
    Fronts: DefTech Studiomonitor 65 (bi-amped)
    Side: DefTech SR-8080BP
    Rear: DefTech SR-8040BP
    Subs: SVS PC-12plus (x2)
I recently found a great deal on a pair of the DefTech BP-8080ST supertowers. I want to try and swap out the Studiomonitors with the supertowers and try to connect them so that the built-in subs will act as more of a "mid-bass" driver. The two Subwoofer outs on the back of the Marantz are currently consumed by the two SVS subs that are hooked up. How do you recommend I connect everything so that the built-in subs can be utilized and everything can sound its best? Also note that the center channel has a built-in sub as well with an LFE channel connection, so there's always that as well. Thank you.

    • @TysonHook-22-

Get two Y-splitter cables. Use one Y-splitter to connect your towers to your avr LFE out and the other Y-splitter and LFE to connect your SVS subs and then for go the center channel sub entirely.... If you want to power all of your subs the only option I can think of would be to Y-split your towers into one of the LFE outs, connect your center to the other LFE and then get a separate amplifier to run your subs.

Thank you
