I swear my cat remembers being deathly ill with pancreatitis several years ago. He was on deaths door but my vet and my family fought hard to make him well again. There were a bunch of nights I spent on the couch with him and many days that I was hand feeding him and giving him meds and fluids. He got better but now if he has to vomit, even just a hair ball, he comes to me and makes this heart wrenching cry of panic. We both get so upset recalling that experience all over again.
My deceased Siamese cat would make a gut wrenching sound or yowl, when he had to vomit. He would usually wait for me (mostly) until I grabbed a newspaper, unfolded it, and laid it on the floor under his head...to vomit on.
Tina, I'm so glad your cat got better. Our cat was diagnosed with pancreatitis also but did not get better despite meds. Eventually when he'd lost a pound or so of weight, the tumor was palpable. Anyone reading this, if your cat stops eating suddenly, ASK the vet to do a scan if they don't offer! We still might have been too late to save him, but if caught early enough, you might save your cat.
@@cognitogrrl So very very sorry for your loss. Wishing you peace & light. Hope that perhaps you have now adopted another wonderful little kitty 😺 😊 🙏🌠🌺🌻
When I was in high school I taught my kitty to roll over with the help of treats. She would only do it for me and just ignored everyone else who tried to get her to perform, treats or not. Then I went overseas for studies and didn’t come home until I graduated from university, and after all those years my kitty still remembered this trick. She came up to me, rubbed herself on my legs, and rolled over right in front of me as if to say: remember how we used to play together? It’s now been a long time since she passed away, and I miss her very much.
Yes, same thing happened to my friend. She had to leave and years later when she returned the cat greeted her with long meowing, almost as if why did u leave meeee?!! I will always remember this story. My cat is very clever too, he defo remembers stuff, and sometimes thinks he sees the future, and able to telepathicly communicate 😻
There was a feral and dangerously hostile cat who had a habit of populating our back yard with successive litters of kittens until we had her trapped and spayed. After her convalesence in our house we released her, and she disappeared for eight years. At 3 AM one cold wintry night I happened to look out my back window, and there she was, perfectly still and staring up at me, just as though she had never left. Now chastened by experience and transformed into as sweet a cat as you'd ever find, she lived out the rest of her life with us (and the four kittens of hers we had kept).
For a few years I looked after an outside cat brought in by the next door neighbors. Later, they moved out of town, and took Coco-Puff with them. It was almost six weeks later that I spotted her running back up the street to her old digs, on the final stretch of her Homeward Bound trek, noticeably leaner but still healthy.
This happened to me! I used to feed a street cat for months since she was 3 months old. I couldn’t adopt her coz my dad wouldn’t let me. After I left the country for 3 years due to my dad’s job, I came back and then a few days later I was outside just standing when she came to me meowing and jumping and trying to rub against me and I realized she didn’t do it to anyone else. She was excited as soon as she saw me. Now I’m gonna get a job and adopt her very soon.
I have a cat that was always sitting with or on my husband. He had a stroke and was in hospice here at home. The cat never left him, always on the bed with him. After he passed away the cat would not get off the bed, until it was removed from the house. Our cats grieved and cried and went from door to door, for days. About six months later I took one of my husband’s shirts to create a memory bear for my grandson. My husband’s cat, laid on the shirt and wouldn’t move for about an hour. I just gave him time. They absolutely remember!
So sorry for your loss🕯️. When my wife Vickie was battling covid, nurse lilly would not leave her side. She would only eat and potty when I was in the room taking care of her. Unfortunately after 5 days, she succumbed to covid. Lily has never been the same. She cries and looks for anything of hers to lie on 😭. Little cinnamon the Chihuahua, his heart couldn't stand it and he went to find mommy at rainbow bridge three weeks later. It will be a year September 24 and Lilly is still trying to cope.
My husband was at home for his last days and I was giving him his meds via a syringe and one of the cats jumped up on the bed and literally yelled nonstop at him. My husband struggled to lift his arm and I didn’t know if he wanted to pat the cat or push him away so I didn’t help, apart from still slow dripping the meds. He passed the next day and this cat kept a close eye on what was happening while keeping himself hidden. He and the other two cats were all upset so I carried them in to his room, one at a time to show them he was gone. They too have a favourite jersey to sleep on. Sometimes animals just amaze me and my condolences to all that have lost a loved one.
My brother and my cat used to have a strong bond. My cat was super scared as soon as strangers came into the house. As soon as the doorbell rings she was hiding under the bed until they were gone. My brother moved and came to visit like 10 years later. So she has never seen or heard him since then. She didn’t went away hiding but stood in the doorway, stared at him for a minute and jumped straight onto his lap and started purring. That’s all I need to know about cat & memories.
My mom,my son and I all fed my cat with a bottle when she was found as an itty bitty kitten. We are still the only people she really likes. I left for a year for work came back and she never missed a beat.
Almost 10 years ago now, I was working in a storage warehouse (at age 18) as I spotted a little, skinny, dirty calico cat. She was wide, meaning she was pregnant. The hair on her back stood up in spikes because she was so skinny, her spine was pushing her fur up. She was covered in what looked like a layer of soot, and she was desperately trying to find a hiding spot. I spent 4 hours trying to capture her. She was clever and fast, but clearly social. She didn't wish to be touched, or approached, but if I sat still long enough, she would come to me and headbutt me. As long as I didn't move or speak, she would be all up on me. But turning my head even the slightest made her shoot away into the rafters. I called her Suzi and kept singing this name to her. I fed her a whole tin of party sausages in order to lure her (it was all we had) and finally trapped her in a plastic crate. I called my mother who said "if you can get her home, she is yours to keep". The best choice here was the animal ambulance, because she needed to be checked for a chip and treated for a horrible earmite infection. Oh, and yeah, have the baby! So they picked her up. The lady said, "she's never going to love you. She's wild and mean and she will always keep running away." I called that night, she had had one baby, and she wasn't microchipped, meaning I could keep her. My parents picked her up a month later as she had regained some strength (baby included). She was wild the entire car ride. My folks were worried she wouldn't like any of us. But at home, we put her into a small side room, and opened the cage. She shot out and tried to hide, but when I said her name, she froze and her whole demeanor changed. She spotted me and immediately climbed onto my lap and laid her head against my chest. It took her a while to warm up to my parents, but she knew me. I *know* she remembered me from a month prior. Whether it was my scent or the sound of my voice, there is no other way she would have cuddled me if she didn't somehow remember me feeding and squinting at her. She's currently on my lap, the baby stayed with my parents and is now a burly 8 year old lad who's dating the other cat we have, Suzi is content and loves me still. Every night she sleeps in my arms and every morning we have breakfast together. She's my little soulmate.
My mom visited from overseas in 2009. Then she came again two years later. The moment she stepped in, my kitty ran towards her and meowed with joy. She remembered my mom.
Of course she did. I used to babysit a friend's cat when she traveled for work. She changed jobs. I didn't babysit him for 2 years. I was afraid he would forget us. After 2 years she had to travel again. She assured me he hadn't forgotten us. When she came to drop him off he seemed to remember us. He got right out of his carrier. I went to show him where we kept the litter box since it had been so long. Much to my surprise in the few minutes he had been there he had already used the box. So yes, they remember.
That is sooooo sweet!! What a lovely blessing! My cat is similar - one of my best friends used to look after him as a kitten when I was away, and he has never forgotten her and still loves to see her 13 years later.
@@lornarettig3215 I babysat him for 10 years. He died at the age of 13. He had better manners than any human house guest we ever had. That is the honest truth! He was always welcome.
Cats have excellent memories. Many years ago I used to look after my neighbour's two cats when they went on holiday, then she moved out and I didn't see her again. Meanwhile I had also moved. Walking home along my street after work one evening, about five or six years later, there was a black cat sitting on a wall. I spoke to it as I approached - I think it's rude not to - and as I passed the cat put out her paw and grabbed my arm, stopping me. When I looked I recognised the white marking over one eye. It was one of one my ex neighbour's cats. I had no idea she had moved into the same street and was amazed the cat remembered me (or my voice) after such a long time.
As someone suffering from schizophrenia who has two cats I'd still love to see a video on cats as emotional support animals. They've truly changed my life for the better by keeping me on a schedule and a budget, providing me with love and companionship (I don't live with any other humans), and even helping me recognize when things that I'm seeing or hearing aren't real. I'm sure people with other mental illnesses have benefited greatly from their feline ESAs as well and I just think it could be a really great, heartwarming, and educational video for you to put out there! Thanks Jackson! -Sierra
Do you know any good sources about what it's like to have schizophrenia or are you willing to share? I still don't really know what it's like outside of pop culture depictions which aren't usually the best.
I'd imagine that really impacts your life. That's great you've got some pets. Keep in touch with people so they can let you know if something is off from normal and help.
A cute story: my mom is a voice (singing) teacher who has her students come to their lessons in her home. A cat I grew up with (RIP Muschi as of a few years ago) absolutely LOVED one of my mom’s adult male students. She’d come running from wherever she was sleeping in the house to greet him as soon as he came in the door and his speaking voice filtered through the space. Well, anytime he’d leave a voicemail on the landline and my mom would play it back out loud, Muschi would perk up. We referred to this student as “Muschi’s boyfriend.” 😂 She’d remember his voice even if months had lapsed in his lessons where he wasn’t around.
I know my cat assumes i have short term memory on where his food is stored because he feels he has to show me everyday where it is and he must lead me the short walk to kitchen stopping and making sure i didn’t lose him
my cat leads me too! Sometimes she tackles my legs when I'm on the way to the bathroom (close to the kitchen) and then miaows to follow her to the kitchen.
@@pippastar1606 lol I don’t get tackled but whenever i go into another room my boy will get down from wherever he is and follow me or run ahead of me almost tripping me. Idk if he wants to try to get food or wants company while he eats
...me too...and if you listen closely, jackson's voice quivered slightly, he too was touched by his realization...you could hear the love he and his cat shares and how much those moments mean to him...definitely a teary eye moment
When our cat was still very young, we had to leave her with my grandparents who live about 5 min away for 3 weeks, because we went on a holiday. It was a one time thing and the cat never went back afterwards. 18 years later our cat was becoming a bit senile and suddenly she showed up in front of my grandparent's house. They let her in and she immediately ran upstairs. She went straight into the kitchen and sat down in front of the fridge and waited for my grandad to take out some food for her, as if she had never been gone.
After my sister passed I took her cat back to my parents house. My sister moved five years before that but the cat remembered everything in the house. She was confused because some furniture (including her former sleeping shelf) standing in different places. I think cats remember things better than persons.😁
@@crazyedo9979 I brought the cat I had at the time back to my parent's house just before we sold it, and she was apoplectic, and happy to leave at the earliest instance. All the furniture was gone and everything from the floors to the doors had been re-finished. She must have lost the sense of reference to her previous memories of the place.
Aww the end almost made me cry. My nineteen year old cat sleeps in my arms every night. Like a baby. Its the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. I’m so lucky to have him.
When I moved out of state, I had to leave my cat behind. I was so upset because he was my baby! Always followed me everywhere and ignored everyone else but my dad. My dad watched him for a couple of years and then moved to the state I'm in and gave him back to me. He instantly ran up to me and hasn't left my side since! If I go to the potty, he follows me and flops on his back and stares. If I'm sleeping, he lays on my belly. When I got pregnant, he instantly knew and snuggled constantly. He's my shadow. And whenever my dad visits, he always runs up to him and lays on my dads belly. He's now 15 years old, and still doesn't leave my side
When I was growing up in Japan, we had this intensely intelligent and compassionate former stray cat named ChaCha. He loved being held and he’d suck on our ears while purring. When my family and I immigrated to USA, my grandparents, aunt, and uncle took ChaCha in as their new family member. We visited them over 5 years later, and ChaCha immediately came to us, leapt up to be held over the shoulder like he’d always done, and sucked on our ears, purring like a very loud engine. He did that to all of us and my relatives were surprised to see that behavior. Although they were taking great care of ChaCha and spoiling him rotten, they’d never seen him do that to anybody. During the day, he would follow us wherever we went, and at night, he’d come to sleep with us. It was a very special time we spent together; he must’ve remembered us.
One of our cats was particularly close to our daughter, who left to live in another country 2 years ago. She took over our daughters room, and still gets excited if she hears her voice on a video call. I believe she still misses her & has not forgotten her.
The first time I spent three weeks at my college dorm and then I came home, one of our cats was super standoffish while my other cats were happy to see me like they were when I lived with them full time. I think he was mad that with no prior pattern, I left for weeks and maybe he felt abandoned. Now when I come home on weekends he’s his normal self. So I guess he committed my college stays to memory.
My niece came with my husband and I when we went to pick up one of our cats as a kitten for the first time. She spent the most time with him during that 1st day, playing and talking back to him (I have 2 very chatty Siamese). She would also stay with me when my husband had to go out of town to see his sick father. At least 6 months had gone by since the last time she had come over and we moved to a new house. My niece came to visit and the second he saw her, he jumped up on the couch to "tell" her hello. It amazed her as she has never had her own cat. I was not surprised.😊
Cats absolutely remember! We left SA and my kitty was too old to travel so she stayed with my Dad! I visited when I could. One time I got there and my Dad was worried because he had not seen her for 4 days and she was really old (also quite wild). About 15 minutes after I arrived- by Taxi - she appeared! Spent the evening purring on my lap - and then- curled up on my lap- she passed away!😿. It was the saddest, most touching moment of our life together!
when I rescued my kitty Vinny, he was a stray that would wonder around the block. when I first started feeding him, we barely knew each other. but it was funny one time I went to a CVS and saw him at the dumpster with some other cats and he recognized me, it was Soo cool! Now he is a full-time house cat and the biggest love bug. 😻😻😻😻
Oh they have memory indeed😻 Somehow if cats could talk to us humans, they would have plenty of stories to tell. And about the territorial behavior, how they know to stay between safe areas and safe people is something that has mesmerized me.
Great story!!! Love that your cat recognized you at the CVS dumpster. Perhaps you should tell the CVS they are a meeting place for cats & humans! So happy that your story had a happy ending! Have fun with your 😺. Mine has been my most faithful companion for 8 years - all through the pandemic! Love her so much! 🐱🐈🐈⬛🐯🦁🐴🦄🐑🐁
@@player4life11111 Yes! I always laugh when my kitty is meowing @ me so definitely & I just can't figure out what she wants, having gone through the usual with her! To joke, I say to her: If only the Egyptians had taught you English ***** & she looks @ me with attention & then meows again! *****Know that this is absurd - there are so many languages in the world! 🌍🌎🌏
That's cool. I feed a couple of strays in my front yard. If I see them in the alley when I'm taking out trash they usually just freeze like what are you doing here? :)
They definitely have an excellent memory. My cat's vet, who had a very high pitched voice, came to visit him at home twice. The first time, she fully vaccinated him as a kitten. Even though he had been relatively easy to handle while being injected, he ran away as far as he could in the house, after it was done. Two years later, the same vet once again came home to visit him. As soon as he heard her say "hello" to my dad at the entrance door, he rushed to hide under a cupboard. He had not seen her yet! He simply heard her voice, and he dashed. Another thing that he remembered was the sound of the pestle and mortar. My dad is a biologist who understands the importance of nutrition for health. Once, our cat seemed to have lacklustre hair for no apparent reason. My dad decided to give him some vitamins. He crushed a small fraction of a multivitamin tablet in the pestle and mortar, mixed it with water, put it in a syringe, and opened my cat's mouth to give it to him. He did it once a week for 3 weeks in the autumn and once a week for 3 weeks in the spring (this was all before Purina and the likes). After a month, our cat's hair was always extremely soft and shiny and he was super healthy, with long-lasting effects. That said, every single time, he ran away and hid somewhere, after the deed. Well, every time we used the pestle and mortar for something else (crushing mustard seeds for a salad, for example), our cat looked at us with that "not again" look in the eyes, and slowly but surely disappeared under a cupboard. He was such a bright kitty. I still miss him, after 20 years.
I remember when my Gremlin died, my other cat Aslan was so upset. A year later the person I lived with adopted a cat that looked almost exactly like Gremlin, and Aslan looked like he had seen a ghost the first time he saw her. Aslan knew Gremlin his whole life until he died. I firmly believe not only did he remember Gremlin, but for a minute I think he actually hoped it was him.
Definitely needed this. I'm a "dog" person. I've always had and loved dogs. Their "unconditional love" speaks to me. But, as fate would have it, I wound up with a kitty. My son had died at 36. I worked for the company he built. One day, about 2 years later, one of the workmen let me know they'd found something on the grounds under a piece of equipment. Turns out it was this tabby kitten. No sign of a mommy or siblings. The guys all said that Cliff, my son, had sent this gift to give me someone to love. For 3 weeks I cared for her, trying to decide whether I could be mom to a kitty, but I couldn't let go of the notion that my son was somehow connected to this little baby (she was so tiny that the vet couldn't tell her gender!). That was 8 years ago, and I still struggle with "what is our connection". I know she feel safe and she's very well cared for...your videos have helped me A LOT to be a god mommy to her. But she is very independent (though, like your kitty, wherever she may have been hiding before bed time, about 10 minutes after I get in bed, she crawls in next to me. I only hope that she feels love the way I intend it. I'm trying to understand her kitty love language, too!
@@t0m_mcc I guess when it comes to bedtime I am trusted and loved times four. they come from all corners of the house it's like they know I'm ready to sleep.
When you're in bed, you are safe to snuggle with as well as being cosy and warm. It took 2 years for my rescue girlie to be brave enough to do that, and another 2 to set a foot on me Your cat loves you, she is just emotionally independent. When a cat comes to you or snuggles in, it's love. It's not unconditional love, but all the sweeter because you've made that bond
Cats absolutely do feel love, and depending on how you treat them *some* cats will act a lot more like dogs than you expect. My old cat Ciri would literally be waiting for me at the door when I came home, follow me everywhere around the house, drag her toys to me when she wanted to play, and she even found me after (and this is a long story that I'm not going to fully go into) I had lost the house we lived in and her (absolutely not my choice and a wild situation outside of my control). But when I came back to the area and started feeding local strays she just appeared one day and walked right into my new residence like she owned the place, despite never being there before. Your cat may not do all of those things, but the fact that she seeks you out and chooses to sleep with you is definitely a sign this cat loves you. If you are looking for any advice on how to play with her more/better/get a closer bond, I'll just say to keep in mind that if you are playing with her with an active toy (like a wand with a string and feathers) just because she walks away does not mean she is done playing! Ciri would often duck around a corner to "hide herself" since cats are ambush predators. "Hiding" the toy (moving it around an object or out of her sight) would make her come running out instantly looking for it, and when she walked around a corner she was using the opportunity to rest and watch it's movements. It's best to have a wide open area to play with them in, but once that has several obstacles and boxes you can use for "cover".
This summer (2022), I had an experience with liver cancer. I think my cat, Merlin, does indeed remember this, because even now, in December, he gets in my lap, checks the scent of the spot where they put some TACE beads in my abdomen, and then settles down for a brief purr session each morning. Same sequence of events, every morning. I daresay he does remember the time when I was in pain and sick from the TACE therapy, even now. And now he checks, every morning, to make sure it's not happening again.
I was a drug addict who had to leave my kitty with an ex for a while until I got my life back together. The last time I saw him was on Jan 24th 2018. I vowed to get him back. 4 and a half years later, I have my own place, sober for 3 and a half years, car and job. The last missing puzzle piece was my Gabriel Goldschmidt. 🐈. I was finally able to get him last month and when I got him out of the crate and picked him up, he Instantly recognized my voice and started rubbing and purring and wanting to do a game that him and I played, that him and I ONLY played. We had a happy reunion and it was the best day ever. He doesn't leave my side and I am spoiling him for hopefully many years to come.
I believe that cats and dogs both have long memories of the ones that they loved I was a cat rescueer for many I have seen them mourn them selfs to death , or get very sad listless and withdrawn it's terrible to abandon them.. But you did great . Getting him back and letting him know that you have not abandon him..👍👍👍😸🐾✨
Returning home for winter break after my first semester at college, i had no idea how my cat would react. I’d known her for 13 years, but had never been gone for so long. She was sleeping under the couch, and I came in, and said “hi baby!”. She IMMEDIATELY started meowing loudly and came out to greet me. It was so special, like she was saying “oh my god, person, i had no idea when I’d see you again!” I graduated in May, and she just passed away last week. I’ll always cherish each moment that I came home to her.
I had a proper test of my cat's memory very recently. Almost a decade ago, when my cat was barely 1 year old my beloved came to visit me from another country. He stayed for only a couple weeks, but during that time my cat LOVED him. When he left, my cat kept looking for him for weeks, crying for him at the front door as he waited for him to come back any day. Well, life happens, school, work, and other events prevent him from visiting and vice versa until just a couple months ago I was actually able to move myself and my cat to go stay with him. My cat had not seen anything of my beloved in all that time. We both wondered if he'd have any memory of him at all but were ok with them just having to form a new relationship too. NOPE! It has been a couple months and it's been the same since the first day. My cat full out LOVES him. He does not care about anyone else who might visit or be in the house, even me. My adorable little dumb dumb cat just wants to scream at and follow my beloved and will instantly start purring the moment he gets attention from him. We 100% are convinced that my kitty remembers him and has been overjoyed to have his buddy back. Also yeah he is my cat, but I've fully accepted that my beloved is my cat's favorite person and I love it. So yeah, my cat has a pretty good memory I think.
My grandma had two cats, they were siblings. One experienced trauma (We don’t know exactly what) and the other didn’t. The cat that didn’t experience trauma was very friendly from the day she was adopted to the day she died. The cat that did experience trauma was skittish for many years, only when she was 10+ years old she started to accept affection from the family. It was interesting but also sad
Growing up, we adopted a cat that had been abused. Technically she was my brother's cat but in reality, Miss Kitty took to my mother. When she was sick, the cat would lay on her feet and only left to eat or go outside. After my mother died that cat ended sitting on her bathrobe for weeks.
Cats do retain some of their origin even after we take them in and love them. An old boyfriend of mine had two cats, a brother and sister. A feral cat had had kittens in his backyard shed and he'd brought two of them in as soon as they were old enough. The boy fared better; he accepted affection but was still skittish with new people. Once he got to know you he was a love bug. The girl, however, never got over her fear of humans. She would only come out of hiding when he was home alone. I was there all the time for over three years and I rarely saw her. She would come out of hiding sometimes to sleep with us, but as soon as I stirred she was off and running. She was a beautiful, long-haired white cat but her fear and insecurity kept her from grooming herself properly. She was always matted and would only let him brush her on rare occasions. These two cats had been brought in the house at 6-7 weeks of age and had no reason to be afraid. But those first weeks with their feral mother never left them completely. The beautiful female cat hid herself in the house one day and died, and it took him a long time to find her. He smelled what had happened and was devastated when he found her curled up in a tiny ball in a place he didn't know the cats could get to. Even in her last moments she was fearful. She lived to be about ten, while her brother lived a decade longer.
@@shadokat Oh gosh! That’s such a sad story. 😢😢 But the good part was that she was inside a loving home and I would imagine on some level, she knew how much she was loved. Still…Glad her brother lived many healthy years.
I have two cats, and they show the same pattern. One was given away to me for having diarrhea! She used the box, but it had a bad odor. She was sick, got treated, and is well now. She buries for an hour in the litter box, if you let her. We hold her and soothe her, and tell her it’s ok. She gets insecure when anybody leaves the house. She does not want to lose her family, again. Cats do remember!
Part of me always wonders if my cat remembers me finding her as sick malnourished kitten and then nursing her back to health, giving her a huge safe space to call her own, food and treats, and endless playtime . Even if she doesn’t all that matters is I remember and she’s happy and healthy 😊
Even us humans don’t remember the things our parents did for us when we were little that well. But we remember the feelings of warmth, happiness and protection. I bet your cat remembers the same 💕
I wonder that about mine too, but he was practically a baby. Just 4 weeks old. But, when I would feed him a slurry of formula and wet food his face would get messy, so I’d have a cloth and warm water ready, and I’d gently wipe his face clean. Immediately after, every time, he’d curl up on top of me and fall asleep. Now he’s 4 years old, but still if he gets in my lap to take a nap, he will put his face in the air expecting me to rub it in the same motion I used to wash his face when he was a baby. After I do he purrs, gets a peaceful expression, and falls asleep. So I feel like some kind of memory of babyhood is locked in there, even if it’s just a sense of comfort in his subconscious.
My father liked to garden every day and noticed a small cat following him around the garden. When he would rest on the swing the cat would sit on his shoulder while he rocked the swing. After some months my father developed dementia and could no longer garden. I thought maybe she would be a great therapy cat since they had a relationship. I spayed her and brought her inside. That cat ( monkey) stayed with him like a dog. When he became bedridden she slept with him. When he passed, she stayed outside his door. You could tell she was lost. My dad passed Oct 2021 and I still find her outside his door. I try to give her extra love, but she still looks like she feels displaced. I have my cat and my mom has hers. My heart breaks for monkey.
Both of mine do this. One is a bit hard of sight, so I have to take care of his eyes very well, and pushes his muzzle and eyes into my hand and clothes everytime he wants to lay on me
I think there are some memories. My boy remembers very well the blanket we brought him home with, between all of his baby blankets it was his favorite one. I now have it stored with my winter blankets because he filled it with holes, and the fall cleanout is one of his favourite day of the year. Also, my dad had him in his greenhouse all day long when he was there, since it was fall and it was chilli in the house before caleftion would turn on. Now he loves flowers, specially my dad's, and he goes and rubs his face against them.
My kitty has moved a bunch. And lived with a bunch of different people. But when he was a kitten, he lived with my dad and loved him. When he turned about 4, my parents got divorced, and he lived with my mom until he was about 8. Then he started living with me and my dad again. Once we brought him into the house for the first time he immediately recognized my dads scent, and ran to him. ❤
The best kitty memory story is the relationship between my mom and her cat Shadow. My Mom in her last 2-3 years of life was constantly in and out of the hospital with stays lasting weeks to months. Shadow was a very senior kitty who just waited for her returns home. Sadly he could not hang for the last time. He passed one month before her last return home, some 15 months before Mom died. I hope they are together now,
Great topic. As a shelter volunteer, and foster mom, I am often so heartbroken by the cats, particularly the older ones, who are owner surrendered or brought in as strays, who seem so shut down and sad. I worry that they are missing their families, are grieving and confused about where they are and what is going on. I want them to NOT remember. It really is hard for those of us who care for them and sometimes I think I can't take it anymore. Then I remember, my job is to help them and love them while they adjust. Someone has to do it, and it then warms my heart when they do come out of their shells and show they are ready to move on to a new family.
We have 2 cats, wanted to go on a short trip with my husband, took them to a cat hotel. The owner was posting pics on inst. the cats looked so miserable and unhappy we had to cut the trip short and came one day earlier. At that hotel cats were not sitting in cages, they had own rooms with glass doors and had a freedom to roam all over and sheltered outside all day and interact with other cats if they wanted. My cats didnt want. I will never leave them at any hotel, we will always be taking them with us. I can not understand people who surrender their pets. So cruel. It is even more cruel than to surrender children - at least to those u can explain something and find an excuse (lame, i know), but animals do not understand what happened and why their world just changed out of sudden.
Thank you Grace for all you do for the cats. You are right, it is hard to see so much pain and sadness in those little furry kitties. I've helped stray cats in Spain when I lived there for a while and many times I came home and cried, wanted to quit and not see so much suffering anymore. But than I thought that no one else would take care of the cats and that they were always happy to see me and I kept going on. Again, thank you. Please remember in difficult times that you make the difference..😻
Had to leave my kitty for 3.5 months or so to suddenly deal with family issues back in my home country. Left him in my place here, and some very nice people came and took care of him a couple of times a day. When I got back here, it was clear to all that he definitely remembered me and was very excited to have me back. He also stared at me and purred for hours that first evening. First meal with him, I tried our routine, which I’m sure none of the care givers did. “Wait,” which means to sit and wait. I set his bowl down. “Look at me.” Keep looking at me until I say, “Okay.” It was all there in his memory banks! And, then, he started “asking” for clicker training, which of course is snack time for him. He remembered it all. I was very pleasantly surprised! I need to go back to my home country this month to stay, so I’m taking him with me this time, of course, and I’m wondering how his memory will be for doing clicker training in a completely different location.
My cat has a really good memory. We go for walks every day, so its important that she remembers the rules of the road. No attacking yellow striped bugs, only chase birds away from traffic, don't go under cars, don't get the leash tangled and more of that kind of thing. She is familiar with all the people and dogs she's met. She remembers where she finds things and goes back later to took for them again. Some more than a year later. I can depend on her to catalog all the information she gets. She also remembers all the negative things, so I try to keep interactions always pleasant, although she'll hiss at me from time to time.
I do that - take my indoor cat for a walk on the pavement outside the house. She used to wander off into other peoples' front gardens and I had to fetch her back and say "No" After about 6 months or so, she does not even try to enter other peoples' front gardens (Yep - she's a slow learner)
I know my cat has memory. I went through a phase of eating prepackaged salads for lunch. I’d open the packaging and give the chicken or turkey to my cat. After about a month I got tired of the salads and moved onto something else. A couple of years later I decided to get some of those prepackaged salads again. The second I opened the packaging, my cat ran into the room all excited to get some chicken.
Cats absolutely have great memory recall. My boy Samson and I have an amazing connection because we both had trauma. He was rescued from a dilapidated building having lived outside for several years and he was in foster care for 9 months. He was approximately 6 years old and it seemed like he may have been someone's pet at one point but not sure. In any event, he was extremely loving from the day he was rescued and immediately cuddled into his foster mom's arms and purred so loudly when she took him home. He's a gorgeous black house panther, has FIV, several missing teeth and doesn't have a meow but more like a squeak. He's absolutely perfect!❤ It was love at first sight for both of us and the day after he went up for adoption, he was mine. His foster mom cried the entire day after bringing him to me because she just loved him that much but knew he needed his own home because she had 8 cats of her own that were all rescues. When Samson and I first met he immediately looked around my apartment curiously and then proceeded to take a nap in the kitchen well the two of us talked for over an hour. The next day I called her and told her how much in love I was and that it happened the first time since my son had passed, 4 months prior, that I actually had a full night's sleep. My son, Rio, was a stillborn when I was 6 months pregnant and I almost died. Can't even begin to tell you how that literally suck the life right out of me and I fell into a deep depression. I knew I did not want that to be the rest of my life and my son would want me to learn to love and be happy. So, I needed Samson just as much as he needed me. Our first night together he jumped up into my arms and cuddle with me. I'd look him in the face and I promised him that I would never leave him and that no one would ever hurt him again. Also that I would give him the best life ever. He looked me directly in the eyes and began to purr. I knew he understood. Fast forward four years and this is what we do every night still. I may have adopted him but he rescued me. He still comes to greet me at the door and the first thing I say is, Mama missed you all day and I tell him what a perfect boy he is!
Cuddling with my cat at night is the absolute highlight of my day. There's no better feeling in the world than him purring up against my chest and slobbering on my arm. We've had the same routine since the first week I got him. I used to suffer from night terrors and often felt anxious about going to bed, but since I got him, bedtime is something to look forward to.
My old boy Boris was the same. He was a senior cat who'd been tossed from home to home, and I was an insomniac kid with autism. We both needed structure and stability, so he would sleep at the foot of my bed every night without fail. He crossed the rainbow bridge in 2020, and I still miss having to curl my feet up so that he could snore me to sleep. Cats are the best.
A few years ago, I had a new cat who had never seen a new pair of reading glasses I had then. That cat hadn't seen me wearing glasses yet. I was in bed reading. My new cat approached and very cautiously investigated. So I took off the glasses to let my cat check them out further. I could see the wheels turning in his head as he tried to understand the shiny new thing, and why I would put that on my face. It was so clear that there was deep thought and curiosity going on there, investigating, trying to understand what this shiny thing was. Seeing that for those few minutes was an amazing window into cat logic, cat thinking and feeling, their reasoning process, their way of learning and playing and curiosity. I know they are cat-like, not human-lie, both similar and very different at the same time. But seeing that was so rewarding and intriguing for me. I knew that m cat ws studying everything about those glasses, working to understand this shiny new thing and why the human had them. :D There is an intelligence and a soul in there, a cat, a being as important in their own way as humans are in theirs. If only we could know more about them. They are such a blessing, worth all the wacky stuff and misbehavior. The things that make them who and what they are, are just as special as what makes us human. (And I miss that cat, long ago now.)
That story makes me think of Johnny Hutch. He was not a kitty but was our "mascot" when I was in college. A retarded 50 year old with the mental age of about 6. He loved our 6'7" track star but didn't know him with a Halloween mask. He was terrified. So off and on and off and on and encouraging Johnny to examine the mask as this gentle giant tried to explain he was still the same guy. Johnny finally kinda accepted the mask but still didn't like it and seemed relieved that it was temporary. And I had some critters years ago that had to look me over real good the first time out to barn to feed them in new winter coveralls!
My cat has a morning routine where when I open my bedroom door to let him in, he comes in - dragging his feather stick toy. He jumps on my bed with it EVERY morning, and we play 'feather' for 10-15 minutes EVERY morning while I'm waking up. :) That has definitely moved to his long-term memory.
As crazy as this may sound. I think my cat can "feel" or "hear" my thoughts. For example, remembering when my cat almost died from illness and the struggle to keep him alive while we're snuggling together, I sense he knows what I'm remembering. Or at least, he senses a change in my "mood". They're very perceptive
I've heard dogs can get a lot of info from smelling us - some can even sniff out an incoming epilepsy episode! - I wouldn't be surprised if our scent changes with our mood and cats can smell it.
Cats have a great sense of smell and can absolutely recognize stress and patterns and therefore your emotions or what you are about to do. Every cat is different and they won’t always act on it, but often they have some idea of your mood.
Cats are able to see spirits and auras. They are able to sense things most of us humans cannot. I have an altar in my bedroom filled with crystals, candles and delicate pieces. My cats will jump on every shelf and corner of my home, but do not even dare to touch that corner of my room. I believe they sense that it is a sacred place of meditation and practice. Really smart kitties!
They can smell your hormones and pheromones. They 100% know when you're sick. When I had my gallbladder removed, my cat was about 2 at the time. He would make sure not to lie on my stomach where I was hurting but he would still come onto the bed to check on me. He still sleeps by my head like he did when I was in recovery.
I travel and camp a lot with my cat. I’ve noticed he seems to remember spots. At new places he’s more cautious and checks things out from the truck for a while. If we’ve been there before he’s usually out and about immediately. I make a note of places he enjoys and we return when in the area. It’s fun watching his reaction. He gets excited and even seems to recognize some spots as we’re pulling up.
My three year old cat isn’t a lap cat and doesn’t like being held. Just recently when I laid on my bed, he climbed on my chest and started to purr while I pet him. I spoke to him the whole time and he looks at me and I swear he is communicating and listening to me. It’s very special to both of us now and he wants to lay on my chest all the time now. ❤
My oldest black remembers a lot. He has always watched the widows for frogs and lizards I would call him. We moved to a different state and I can still call him to a window in the new house and tell him frog and he will come running. He also realized that he had to go from a window in one room to a window in another room to see an animal walking in the yard outside. My cats are all inside, no frog or lizard was harmed in the game.
House Cats usually do not harm lizards or frogs, they just play with them. Pity your cat does not go for walks and lives in your prison. Buy harness and leash and let your cat experience life
My partner and I have a very close bond to our kitties and very strict routines in our everyday life - so usually every time we went on holiday (and some else had to feed our cats) it was pure horror for them and they got very stressed out. That changed when our new neighbour started to take care of them during our summer holidays. She is a real cat person and loved every minute she could spend with our cats - and our cats really loved her back. After two years of covid (without any summer trips) our neighbour visited us one evening - and our cats went crazy about her. They usually ignore every stranger - but they clearly recognized her after two years and spent the whole evening on her side/ on her lap. They both clearly remembered her and the good time they had with her - more than two years ago ❤
The thing that continues to baffle me is that my cat's relationship with me evolves continually, and I adopted her when she was already 12. Her vocalizations have gotten way more varied and complex, we have routines at different times of day, and I know that she feels 100% safe with me. That's very special.
Back when the meme of a guy holding his cat up to catch a bug was going around, some friends asked if I had ever tried it with any of my cats. Not long after, a moth came inside and was hanging out over the laundry room door. I grabbed the nearest cat, my Mustachioed Tuxie, Kova. He hates being picked up, but settled down with a few "steady" commands. (He enjoys obedience training with my dog) Then he spotted the moth and froze in my hands. Chatter commenced. I held him up and he grabbed the moth and held it until I put him back on his feet. HE STILL REMEMBERS! It was years ago and my Kova still remembers the one time I held him up to catch a moth. I open the laundry room door and he races inside, takes various positions, bobbing as he looks at the top of the door for prey. He may even paw at my leg to hold him up, looking up at the top of the door the entire time.
This was a lovely video! Thank you! My Mom watched over my cat when I was in the Army and then during the time I experienced a period of homelessness and every time I came to visit, he remembered me but his reaction was different. In fact, I picked up vibes that he felt abandoned or betrayed. He didn't seem happy to be there and he didn't seem to understand why he was there. When I went to pet him, he sniffed me as if for the first time. My Mom told me he kinda languishes about the house but on a few rare occasions, he jumps on her lap. My Mom loves cats but her patience was short with him. She likes to keep a tidy house and so I frequently would get phone calls how my cat "did something" like scratching her furniture, or jumping on the kitchen counter, or going after her plants, or puking his food and she would always tell me to come get him before she placed him in the shelter. It took me two years to finally get my own home and I was so grateful she held on to him for so long. I was always worried she was going to give up on him and I would never see him again. His first night in my new home was full of anxiety. But after sniffing every crook and cranny of my apartment and seeing how much independence he had compared to what he had at my Mom's house, his anxiety quickly went away and he became the old self I recognized again. I ended up moving from that apartment only six months in (long story) but this time I made sure we stuck together. We drove in the moving van together and he was surprisingly calm the whole way. I always wondered what was going through his mind while he was staring at the road going by but I felt confident this time he trusted that I wasn't going anywhere without him again.
I had a couple of kittens who’d been rescued from a garbage can filling with rain water. One of them ran to the bars of his cage in the shelter and purred his heart out - “Pick Me!” I was in university so I moved regularly. One time I was packing up and I looked around and he was trembling really bad. I picked him up and hugged him and we had some purrs and I got out the carrier. He hopped in and settled right down - just needed to know that he was coming too. Broke my heart that he could think I’d ever leave him, but at least I knew what he needed. It’s not the place - it’s you your kitty loves, and where you are is home ❤❤❤
I had to let my sweet girl, Smokey (17yo), go to the rainbow bridge last year. She was in my arms, very sick, and hooked up to an IV. We had plenty of time with her but eventually it was time for the vet to give her one more shot. I cuddled her close and said "Time to go night night, Smokey. Night night" That was our every night ritual before we fell asleep. I hoped that it would calm her...❤
Oh boy was I not prepared for your story to hit me like a damn truck. I had to say goodbye to my best boy a little over a year ago. His health began to decline after the death of our other cat and one night he started seizing and was struggling to breathe. I rushed him to the emergency clinic at 1 am, but I had a feeling our time was up. They were able to drain some of the fluid in his chest cavity to give him a bit of comfort but I could tell he was panicked by the situation and strange environment. Those few extra borrowed moments before the shot will always mean everything to me. I remember he didn't calm and lie down on my lap until I sang the dumb little "Night-Night Song" that was part of our evening routine. He would always settle up against me and I would say I loved him and would see him in the morning, but this time I said I would see him soon. Then he was gone. So yes, cats absolutely remember important things. And absolutely f*ck congestive heart failure.
@@PinksalmunI hope you find relief. Your boy thanked you loving him. I lost my own Himmie a little over a year ago and have since found love again with my Maine Coon. Love heals.
My friend knows exactly which cabinets his treats and catnip are kept. He is only about a 2 years old now however when he was about 6 months he watched me go to one cabinet for his treats and put it together that the yummies where kept in there knocking on that door when he wants one. Then around a year old I gave him catnip for the first time in a toy which were kept in another cabinet. The toy didn't last very long however some 8 or 9 months since tossing the catnip toy he still goes to that cabinet expecting the toy. Which does not prove life long memory but that is really an indicator of retention of long term memories.
My little girl is the same, I have to keep moving her treats, treats or catnip, and sometimes even I forget where I put them. I even had one kitty that could unscrew the catnip bottle to get, which that bottle disappeared and I had to put her treats in a screw top container because she would steal the bag and chew into it, that was before I learned she could open the screw top container, found it void of treats. I have fibromyalgia in my hands badly so, I can't use lock top containers. It's funny that I never get to catch them in the act but only the aftermath
@@deborahgraham6112 if the package was opened previously, I could see it being a scent thing, but on unopened packages mixed with other food items, not so much. She also hid packs until she was done, like saying, hey mom, I'm out of treats.
Same for my two! They have their own pantry and before I even go to it, I play a little game with with them and then ask “who wants some treatises?” They instantly light up and run to the pantry 💜
They have a decent memory for local geography, too. My past cats were indoor/outdoor jobs, and they knew how to get around for about a 2 block radius. Keep in mind how small they are and their physical capabilities - they'll remember where their are fences they can walk along the top edges of with their incredible sense of balance; they'll remember where the *dogs* are and where all the climbable trees are, and other pussycat stuff like that.
2 stories related to this: 1) I helped bottle feed our cat Tiger when he was a kitten, so I've always been one of his favorite people. I went to college out of state for a while, and when Mom was packing up a box to send to be that included my dress coat, Tiger hopped into the box, laid down, and looked at her like "this is my spot now". She emailed me the picture after she told me about it. 2) I was gifted a kitten 2 years ago after my cat went missing; his name is Bastion. My husband and I quickly realized that Bastion was too high energy for our older cat and started looking for a playmate for him. After 4 months of not having any luck-people kept claiming the kittens before us-we talked to my mother-in-law, who gave us Bastion, to see if any of his siblings were still available. His sister Celeste was, so after they got her spayed, we went to meet up with them and pick her up. Bastion's first reaction to a new cat in the house was guarded, until she got close enough that he could smell her. His mood instantly changed; the ears and tail came up, and he immediately wanted to play. They're still basically inseparable.
@@tripunk No, though I'm familiar with the game Bastion. My cat's full name is Prince Bastion and came about as a compromise when I wanted to name him something royal and my husband wanted to name him Sebastian. Celeste's full name is Celestial Grand Majesty.
My cat went to my open suitcase that was packed sunday at put a TOY in there for me. I gave it back and said thank you when we got home Tues and she carried it around all night.
Im just starting to learn this whole world about cat after rescuing one from our gyms parking lot. I don’t know how he did it but he remembered the sound of our cars because he would get out hi hi ding place every time the car would get there without us getting out. So much to learn! Thank you Cat Daddy. ❤
My cat was kept in a cage for 6 months and given to me when I moved to Puerto Rico. Whenever he heard his captors voice, he would run and hide. He was so traumatized by that experience. It broke my heart. My Blue (who was my first cat) passed away last August. I miss him every day. It still hurts like it was yesterday. Love and miss you my Baby Blue. I can't wait to see you again. 💔
I just adopted a tuxedo cat, and she already knows where the treats are located! If I walk into the kitchen she follows me to the cabinet where I keep them….stands there looking up, and meowing until I get them out! I believe they are extremely smart, as I am getting to know Luna!
@@sarasthoughts I was asked a little over a month ago if I could adopt a cat that had been at a re-homing shelter. They had spayed her, chipped her, and she had gone to a good home, but because of family issues …( the child in the family wanted to play a little too ambitious with the cat) I was asked if I could adopt her! I can’t say enough good things about this beautiful tuxedo cat! The most playful cat! My second cat! 7 years ago my first cat Tabby had passed at 17 years….so Luna is my second cat! Thanks for telling me your tuxedo is so affectionate! Luna sleeps next to me…on her own she has decided I am her person! It makes it nice the family still visits her! 🤗
tuxedos are so smart! at times it's like dealing with a 2 year old that will never grow up, ha! but they give so much love. when Miss Po passes over the Rainbow Bridge (she is 17) i will adopt another tuxedo
My cat sat behind me as I was washing up the pots and I stepped back fell over him and hit my head on the kitchen cabinet. He watched concerned as my husband helped me up sat me down on a chair and put a cold compress on my head. He now avoids sitting behind me in that way and if he’s anywhere near my feet and I go to step back he runs out of the way. He definitely remembers that incident. He also remembers that he once went on a long 2,000 mile road trip in a van, he found this stressful and if he sees a similar van he runs and hides this was 4 years ago and he definitely remembers that! Yes cats definitely remember things. X
My CatChild knows exactly where his treats are and have been hidden. He even ritually visits previous locations from rotations and "bangs the drum" upon the doors alerting us he is perturbed at the inconvenience. 🥰
_Childcat._ Lol Very cute. I recently heard the expression "feline life partner" and it's a perfect, modern way of expressing the relationship I have with my girl. 😺
My mom gave mine too many for a while and it ended up leaving her with a yelling, hungry kitty--so we tried moving them to a secret drawer in the bathroom and distracting kitty while getting them... Still only took her about 2 days. She's crazy for those things.
I've had my cat for 10 years now, and he's always been my light through every dark point I've been through with him. And I've always been thankful that I ever got him. 😊❤
So happy 😊 to know this! My beloved Flora too! She has been with me for 8 years - since my husband passed away - she actually adopted me, by meowing at me continuously when I visited a shelter - she is a Tuxedo kitty & the light of my life!
My kitties remembered their foster mom who bottle fed them for weeks when they were first rescued. I adopted them after she had raised them for about 10 weeks. When she comes to visit, they act completely different to her than to me, despite that I've had them for YEARS. They will come to her and snuggle and let her hold them, while they will not let me hold them at all. We haven't seen her for several years, now, but they still seem to recognize her voice when we talk on the phone.
I feel like my cats definitely care about the relationship we have. Partly because on multiple occasions when I’ve been upset they’ve come and sat near me. One time in particular they had both been avoiding me because I’d recently applied flea treatment. Then as soon as I started crying they came and sat either side of me. They don’t always come and snuggle when I want them to, but they are there when I need them!
Back when my husband and I were first married, his job sent us out of the country. We couldn't take our pets with us. The cat spent about 2 years living with my father. When we finally brought him home, he walked through the entire house, which was a different house than the one we'd lived in before. He sniffed everything. Then he walked back into the living room, jumped on my lap and began purring. It was not his custom to jump on my lap, so I was surprised. My interpretation was that he remembered us and our scent and was happy he was finally home.
I got my cat from animal shelter and he definitely has some bad memories with kids. He's super friendly to strangers except children. Even if they don't scream, he just see a kid and run away.
I think cats (like other animals) know more, understand more and remember more than most people think. Thank you, Jackson, for everything you do for cats (and humans!)
It''s amazing, because my cat not only remembers where we feed her at home, she also remembers her feeding spot when we stay at my parents place. Even during covid when we couldn't travel for an entire year she still went straight to her 'spot' as soon as we arrived for our holiday visit. Good memory for my 18 yr old kitty 🐈
Jackson, I'd like to just say thank you for a moment. You'll like won't see this in the sea of comments, but yea. Back in 2016 I was on a binge watch of your show MCFM, and lo and behold- shortly after that a little kitten was suddenly screaming her head off under our home. I gave mom about 16hrs to come back until I couldn't bear it anymore- especially knowing we still had some slight frost at night. So I took that lil 2 week old black kitten inside. Her name is Tink! And as much as she isn't a cuddle bub- she shows so much love I have learned to recognise thanks to you in so many other ways. And she makes my heart so incredibly happy. So anytime I catch your content- I just feel happy too. I appreciate it so incredibly much. That lil black cat is my entire world. Last December my mom surprised me with a ginger half bengal kitten. His name is Louie. I followed your steps to introduce them and within a week they were playing! Thank you Jackson- from the bottom of my heart! My life is quite difficult because of Multiple Sclerosis, disablity, trauma and other things- but with your video's for a little while I feel happy and at peace- and sorta at ''home'' in a silly odd way :)
My Houdini kitty magically "appeared" on my porch on December 27th, 2020, right after one of the saddest, loneliest Xmas ever. He was about 6 months old and a beautiful black and white tuxedo cat. He is very sweet, playful, and is obsessed with water. He would drop toys in his water bowl (or the toilet) so he could fish them back out again. He loves it when I drop an ice cube in the water dish so he can play with it until it disappears. The weird thing is I live way out in the boonies, my closest neighbor is over a mile away. There is a community about 5-6 miles away where a guy with a horse ranch lets his cats have lots of kittens so that the cats will kill mice. These kitties are often killed by predators, the lucky ones go looking for new, better homes. I think that is where he came from, because a lady over there was adopted by a female cat around the same time, about the same age who looks a lot like him. We both posted pics to compare, they are almost twins. Then another lady chimed in and told me, "Your boy looks just like the cat who stole the koi fish from my pond!" I think it's likely he was the culprit, especially considering how much he loves to eat fish.
@@theblackbaron4119 I wonder what he is sometimes! I've been owned by several cats in my 61 years, but he's been one of the most unique. He was feral before he came here, and would have likely had contact with racoons. Maybe they taught him how to hunt!
I took care of my sister's friend's cat for about 3 years. While she deployed. Sometimes when she was able to return she would always come and see her cat. This cat is so sweet and way too friendly. Incredibly happy social cat. While I had him she had returned and brought her sister. He hadn't seen the sister in a few years. In the past, while she was deployed, her sister had taken care of her cat. This cat's demeanor immediately changed when he saw the sister. He ran to hide. I went and got him brought him back he took off to hide. He hid and he waited until this woman left. I don't know what trauma this poor cat was subjected to when he was being cared for by this woman. He had never acted like that and the whole time I had him he never was anything but friendly and social. I don't know what she did to him.
The Santa Claus Effect you mentioned is how we got our bookstore's shop cat acclimated to customers. She's a rescue/foster fail who missed the window for easy socialization to humans, but she is curious about us. She dislikes petting from strangers and is super sensitive to how she's being petted (her whiskers are HUGE and it really irritates her when people brush against them). But she's SO FLUFFY that no matter how many times I warn people, about 10% of folks are gonna try to pet her anyway. It was easy to train her on scratch & bite inhibition because she's genuinely a sweet girl, but she's still very big on establishing her boundaries and she WILL slap someone who oversteps. And most people get nervous when a cat swipes at them or puts their mouth on them, even if the claws are in/the cat doesn't bite down. We had to teach her to knock it off. She's very food motivated, so each new customer is a new snack opportunity. She figured out VERY quickly that playing nice gets her a treat and not playing nice means I'll pick her up and move her to a different part of the store. She's free to come right back, so that may not sound like a huge punishment--but that's pretty much the only time I move her from one spot to another unless there's a safety issue, and for her it's kind of the equivalent of a parent saying, "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed." She's gone from avoiding customers or hanging out just long enough to get petted & swipe at them, to now greeting them at the door, accepting a quick bit of petting, rubbing against them (*sometimes* -- I think it's kind of a thank you if they did it right) and then running over for her snack. Then she'll peace out until the next person comes in. If we don't have many customers she sometimes even waits by the door for them 🤣 Our other shop cat is "just" a shorthaired black cat and is usually overlooked at first...but he's attention motivated, and is so loving and friendly that everyone who likes cats even a little bit ends up adoring him. We even have a handful of neighborhood customers who pop in once in a while just to say hi to him ❤
I once fostered a pair of bonded cats for two years. When their owner returned and I brought them back it didn't take them long to find their old perches (top of the fridge and on a particular stair). I was amazed over how quickly they made the transition. I think cats are such wondrous critters.
For humans, scent is also a big component of memory. Sometimes I walk down a street somewhere, maybe at a market, or I visit someones house, and I smell something that takes me back to a memory from 20 years ago that I had forgotten completely but due to that smell I remember it in every detail.
My youngest cat, Suzanne, has a bond with me like I've never had with a cat. And my other cat, Ollie is also bonded to me in some ways... But not like Suzanne. She cries for me when I leave the house. If I leave my bedroom (where we spend most of our time together) for more than 2 minutes she either stands at the top of the stairs and waits for me or comes down to find me, she sleeps in my room 99% of the time, if I go to the bathroom she whines for me to come out. She greets me every night when I come home from work and every morning when I open my eyes. I would like to think it's bc she was a stray before coming to live in my house. She just walked up onto my porch, sat at my feet, looked up and meowed at me. So maybe she remembers that I saved her and that's why she's attached herself to me. Either way, I'll never forget this bond. 🥰
Word for word this is me and my cat! AND SHE WAS A STRAY AS WELL. May be a coincidence, but I feel like they might be super grateful to know what love and safety is all in the comfort of our homes. They dont have to fight anymore just live their best kitteh life. I hope you, Suzanne, and the rest of your family live well with lots of love ❤
They certainly do remember their favorite humans - after two and half years of separation my cats recognize me firstly by the voice and secondly by the touch.
When I was a teenager my mom had a cat, well ok to be fair she was really my cat. I can’t really remember how long we had her, but it was years. So when I was 17 I joined the Army and left for basic and ait. I was gone for 6 months and went home for a short time before I left for my active duty station. I was really lookin forward to seeing Frisco, the cat, on my way home. I got home, picked her up, and she hissed at me then pee’d on me… lol I have no doubt she knew exactly who I was, and she was REALLY mad at me for leaving! Didn’t take her long to warm back up to me but I’ve never forgotten that greeting. She was a truly great cat, rip Frisky.
Kobe & Kasey… only 2 months apart in age. I adopted Kobe 1st, but soon realized he needed a play mate. Along came Kasey. They did everything together and we’re best friends. Just shy of 10 years old Kobe got cancer. We all said our goodbyes to him here at home with Kasey by his side taking his last breath. He walked around him, sniffed him, and then looked up at me with eyes that said “it’s ok.” That was three years ago. I kept some of Kobe‘s fur. Kasey will see me sad at times and it is like he’s asking me what’s wrong…. I grab Kobe’s fur and open the bag for Kasey…. There’s absolutely no question that he remembers and knows that is Kobe’s smell. And he gives me the same look “it’s ok”He’s the best.
The memory through scent almost made me cry. One of my cats got sick and when he came back from the hospital after several days my cats didn't remember him. Before they were best friends. It was absolutely heartbreaking, as the sick cat was suffering, and shortly after had to be put down. He wanted to cuddle one last time but the other cats simply didn't recognize him
That's so sad, I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope the pain of that memory fades in time. When my little Sophie had to be spayed, her big sister Stevie didn't recognize her and was hostile for a couple of days and that was tough enough to deal with, even knowing it would be fine in a couple of days.
I've experienced similar. To help alleviate this, I always have a blanket or towel from the house, used by the cat returning from the vet. I pop them in the carrier with the pre-scented textile and by the time we arrive home, sojourn kitty smells as expected and is recognized by their peers.
We recently had a very similar experience. It was sad and difficult to see that she no longer recognizer her (adopted) brother, and he ended up not having enough time left for her to accept him again. I had no idea that could even happen.
Back when I still lived at my parents' house, one day we had house painters over. My cat Mientje was very confident and social, and she always showed great interest in guests - she'd rub against any human's legs. One day I noticed that the painters barked at her to chase her off (I presume they wanted to keep her away from fresh paint, but I'm still not feeling particularly charitable towards them). Three years later, the same painters returned for another job - and Mientje just ran away at the sight of them. She remembered them only too well!
I remember asking you on a live stream if my cat who had to board in a cattery if she would remember me ? I got out of ICU a little while ago and picked her up, instantly after checking out her home she was bonded, that first night she cuddled up purring and cuddling, she’s 16 years and I had her since she was 3-4 weeks old, you reassured me she wouldn’t forget, thank you Jackson
This actually made me feel a little bit better. When I moved out of state from my parents house a few years ago I had to leave my cat with them since the place I'm staying at wouldn't allow her. She's 17 now and last night was just one of those emotional nights I couldn't sleep and missing her again, wondering if she even remembers me. Thank you for the video Jackson! Hoping to visit her someday soon.
I once returned to my cat after a long trip, I called out to him and he came running. I gave him pets and sat down with him for 15 minutes in the kitchen and you could see and hear his happiness and it even looked like he was smiling for a bit. He’s a senior cat and I’ve had him for 10+ years, he’s so cherished and loved at home even when he gets teased a lot. I honestly thought he was gonna forget who I was while I was away.
It's really adorable how my 13 year old cat will start purring as he sees the baby blanket my mother knit for me before I was born, every cat I have raised I would wrap them in this special blanket I have had my entire life.
Clarence, my orange male tabby, was brought into my life in December 2010 by my sister. She had 3 cats at the time. She was battling stage 4 breast cancer at the time and asked if I would take Clarence. He hid for 2 months after I got him home, I believe he was heartbroken as I had watched him play with my sister every evening when she went to bed. When my sister passed in July 2011, her daughters asked if I would then bring one of her other cats home, Sam. I was concerned about how introducing Sam with Clarence would be, since Clarence had been the only cat in my home for the past 7 months. I brought Sam into the house, still in the carrier and they immediately sniffed each other nose-to-nose. It was a revelation that there was no hissing, no posturing, or any other problems with their reunion! It was like, "Hey I know you, where have you been?" Clarence lays on my lap daily, and often sleeps with us as well. He and I have a more than special relationship, and I think of my wonderful sister everytime he loves me or plays with one of the other 3 cats who now bless our lives!
I adopted my sweet calico rescue when she was two years old, on June 3, 2017. I had found at the City adoption day, where her foster mom was offering some kitties for adoption. My cat was not present, she was still too sick to travel in a carrier for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I followed the evolution of her health condition until she was ready for adoption. Since adopting her, I have kept in touch with her foster mom. When she has a hard time, like losing a kitten, I give her news of one of her success stories to cheer her up. In ay 2019, on the City adoption day, I took my kitty to visit her foster mom. As soon as she held my cat against her heart, my sweet kitty knew whose arms she was in. She started sniffing her foster mom like she was the most beautiful perfume she could remember. Then, she settled in her saviour's arms, and she did not mind being in a crowded place. She has the same reaction to my daughter and her youngest daughter who both accompanied me to her foster mom's home, the day I adopted her. Somehow she knew that she was in good hands with us three. When I first took her home, she showed me immediately that she knew what to do with the carpeted roof of her kitty cottage. She had seen something similar before. She later showed me every time that she recognized something she had known in her previous life. Although I do not understand a lot of what she says, if I take the time to look at her when she makes her various sounds and moves, I can sense when she is telling me that she is experiencing something that reminds her of her past life.
My Motley remembered (and told his clowder) about the horrible cold outdoors. Literally, this cat got out in February in upstate NY and was gone for three days and nights. When he let me recapture him (a story unto itself), he was permanently an INDOOR CAT. In fact, if he got into a room with a door open to the outside, he would leave the room post haste. If he could not leave the room for whatever reason, he would huddle in the farthest corner from the open door and cry. Loudly. Motley Remembered.
My cats remember how to play with toys from ten years ago; remembered when someone brought them a gift and the following day reminded them about it; remembered tricks and furniture from a decade prior; they REMEMBER EVERYTHING
That tip about one partner stopping affection and care for the cat... thank you for the validation! We did this accidentally due to my partner becoming very sick (but getting better!) for a few months. His big boy kitty has finally come around to me, and we have a great relationship.
I have 2 rescue cats. One I got when she was still a kitten and the other when she was roughly a year old. I totally believe kitty (the older rescue) remembers that she was severely struggling to survive outside. She was all skin and bones when I brought her inside. And from how she is with me (separation anxiety and all) she is now a “Velcro cat”. I truly believes she remembers the poor situation she was in before she came into my life. And I also believe that’s why she’s a “Velcro cat”
Since my kitties came to me, they were fed and cared for mostly in my living room. Bottles, naps, litter training, everything happened in the living room. To this day, when I serve them food, they run to the living room. If I put it anywhere else, they look at me sideways.
My cat and I lived together for about a year before we moved in with my boyfriend. Ned loves Drew now, but he still has a special attachment to me and considers me his mama - and I think it has a lot to do with that first year where it was just the two of us!
I trained my cat to leave my plants alone, never get into the garbage can or on kitchen counters & table where food is served & let me sleep in on weekends. Impeccable. 3 months at my Mom's (a change of jobs), she did it all. Woke her up at 7am, got into the garbage, etc. Back to my place. Back to house rules immediately. I was really surprised. When I brought
I think the validity of our relationships is more than just memory. I know my cat knows and remembers me; when I'm gone for too long she's unhappy and every time I start getting dressed to leave she remembers to protest. But in the beginning, she chose me. I'd greeted the cats in the cages around her but she was lying on her pillow facing the wall so I walked passed and didn't bother her. But as soon as I passed, she got up and came to the front and asked for attention. The lady working said she had been there for a month and never moved to greet anybody else before. In the 12 years since, she's familiar with other people, romes the house, and occasionally visits other family members, but it's always my bed and my arms she comes back to cuddle in. And it's always under my bladkets that she relaxes the most.
Recently I've had to rehome my cats temporarily with family. I want able to visit them for a little over a month and I wondered if they would remember me. It turns out, yes they do remember me. Now I've gone to stay with that family for a short while and both cats are glued to me. They also fight over my lap, which I wish was big enough for both of them. I don't like them to fight. But I am very happy to know that they remember who mommy is and that they want to spend time with me. It will be a while before I can get a place of my own and bring them to live with me, but at least I know they still remember who I am. It would have broken my heart to come here and have them not remember. I love my boys.
Cats are Intelligent Beings, And They Respond to Care, Kindness, Events in their lives. They Remember who's Been Bad or Good to Them. Diffenetly They Experience Memories. 💚🖤♥️🐈
My cat had a memory so sharp that I was amazed. I imagine they have photographic memories, as mine would know if you moved even one thing in or from a room, no matter how small. He'd go to the area and investigate.
Omg my heart just broke hearing that. Poor babyyyyy X'c

My cat has an excellent memory of what time she gets fed.
She has no memory whatsoever of if she's already been fed.
Lmao
😂🤣😂
Very relatable
😂😂😂😂. Same with my kitty
😅😅😅😅😅
When I was in high school I taught my kitty to roll over with the help of treats. She would only do it for me and just ignored everyone else who tried to get her to perform, treats or not. Then I went overseas for studies and didn’t come home until I graduated from university, and after all those years my kitty still remembered this trick. She came up to me, rubbed herself on my legs, and rolled over right in front of me as if to say: remember how we used to play together? It’s now been a long time since she passed away, and I miss her very much.
Wow that is very sweet, she definitely was showing you the trick you taught her!
Sorry for your loss. It's tough to lose a pet
Sorry for your loss, hope you another awesome cats to make for its place
😢
oh my goodness
My cat didn’t see me for three years but instantly recognised me by my voice when I returned - the most moving moment of my life.
They also miss you!
So sorry for your loss, animals are a true blessing! What a priviledge to experience this kind of love
@@sarasthoughts they really are intuitive and wonderful companions!
@@paulday6875 I totally understand.
Emotions are a glue for memory.

Aw.
I love this story! Thank you for sharing! God bless you and your sweet kitty!!

My mom visited from overseas in 2009. Then she came again two years later. The moment she stepped in, my kitty ran towards her and meowed with joy. She remembered my mom.

That's so sweet 🥰
I love that. I also talk to every cat I see and have noticed that over time some neighborhood cats have gotten comfortable and playful with me
Omg it stopped you to say “hey you know me!” Haha so cute
I love when cats put out their arm to stop you.
-Sierra
I would love to see this as well. All the best to you and your kitties. :)
Do you know any good sources about what it's like to have schizophrenia or are you willing to share? I still don't really know what it's like outside of pop culture depictions which aren't usually the best.

That’s so awesome! What a great memory 😽
After my sister passed I took her cat back to my parents house. My sister moved five years before that but the cat remembered everything in the house. Ur very lucky. Cats are a huge gift in our life. We should never leave them no matter what. All the best
I was at my cousins for weeks when she adopted a kitten. He knows my voice and always comes to the phone and paws at me and talks when I call.
Oh wow....that's both miraculous and deeply touching. 🐾❤
WOW - SHE HUNG ON UNTIL YOU CAME BACK AND THEN SHE WENT IN THE SAFEST PLACE IN THE MOST PEACEFUL MANNER POSSIBLE
A very touching story, thank you.
So sad and so heartwarming at the same moment... Sorry for your loss
My heart....
when I rescued my kitty Vinny, he was a stray that would wonder around the block. when I first started feeding him, we barely knew each other. but it was funny one time I went to a CVS and saw him at the dumpster with some other cats and he recognized me, it was Soo cool!
To joke, I say to her: If only the Egyptians had taught you English *****
& she looks @ me with attention & then meows again! *****Know that this is absurd - there are so many languages in the world! 🌍🌎🌏
Somehow my reply ended up directed to another person. Just so happy that your story had a happy ending!!! 🐈🐈⬛🐱🦁
Gremlin sent a friend for Aslan 🥰
Not gonna lie, this story broke my heart a little. 💔
So sorry for the loss of your son.
Its a very good sign that your cat hops into bed with you, shows that they trust you and want to be with you
@@t0m_mcc I guess when it comes to bedtime I am trusted and loved times four. they come from all corners of the house it's like they know I'm ready to sleep.
👍
When you're in bed, you are safe to snuggle with as well as being cosy and warm. It took 2 years for my rescue girlie to be brave enough to do that, and another 2 to set a foot on me
Your cat loves you, she is just emotionally independent.
That I s truly awesome 😅
I believe that cats and dogs both have long memories of the ones that they loved I was a cat rescueer for many I have seen them mourn them selfs to death , or get very sad listless and withdrawn it's terrible to abandon them.. But you did great . Getting him back and letting him know that you have not abandon him..👍👍👍😸🐾✨
Good on you for kicking the habit and good on kitty for waiting for you to do it.
You just made me cry! Beautiful recovery and reunion. Congratulations on having him back in your life. ❤
Amazing. My cats my kid. I love him to the extreme levels
Yeah cats seems to fall hopelessly in love instantly with some persons :)
That's a good sign if your pets love your significant other! That means they're a keeper.
Cats do remember!
oh they remember for all of their lives, if need be. Trauma or joy or rescue, they respond.
I hope they are together now,
I believe with all my heart that they are ❤
Now im crying 😭
Yes they are together and happy. ❤️❤️
They are together and now i'm crying too 😭
Great topic.
You are a kind soul.
Thank you for doing that for them.💙🙏 Blessings to you and your beloved ones.
Thanks for what you do, fellow animal lover
Thank you 😻😻 How old is she
Thank you for being a responsible cat parent and using a leash! Those walks must be so fun :)
I do that - take my indoor cat for a walk on the pavement outside the house. She used to wander off into other peoples' front gardens and I had to fetch her back and say "No" After about 6 months or so, she does not even try to enter other peoples' front gardens (Yep - she's a slow learner)
@@boelschenlaer she's two years old in a month. Thanks for asking :)
He's absolutely perfect!❤
It was love at first sight for both of us and the day after he went up for adoption, he was mine.
So envious, mine won’t cuddle. At least not yet. Maybe never. My last one was a big time cuddler so I miss that. You are blessed!
Best thing in the world. Can't be bought.
Same here Teth... I don't sleep well unless I have Marble purring and nuzzling !
@@Dustandfuzz AWWW... I bet you DO miss it! 🐱 Don't give up Sylvester ! 😉
Our cat never got used to me wearing a motorcycle helmet. He would run and hide!
@@stldebbie2008 MOTHER WHY IS YOUR HEAD WEIRD D:
Shadow passed on Dec 4 2023, Ollie passed on April 25, 2024. I miss you guys...
Just wanted to tell you how cool that is. My cats stay in the home but it would be great to have them go places with me like a dog. 👏
Yep, they do
They're better than Watch Dogs for that. Awesome to hear 👍
My cat loves a good car ride. Freaks people out at 1st. Lol
My cat always knows when were pulling up to Chick-fil-A lol
GREAT!
Thank you for telling 😻😻
My cat seems to know/ remember certain words & phrases, too: mousie, birdie, food, treats, window, outside, & everyday phrases. p.s. "Mama loves you, baby" always gets him purring. 🙂
@@suraya1224 yes I agree
Hey Sue
Can be friends?
Let more moths in. ;)
Haha! What a funny image!
Moth-man is going to be surprised!
I hoped that it would calm her...❤
That’s beautiful ❤❤❤
😢
How precious you could be there with her
Oh boy was I not prepared for your story to hit me like a damn truck.
@@kellyfoster8903 could it be scent and not really memory?
@@deborahgraham6112 the catnip scent won't be there 9 months later.
Whenever I watch one of Jackson's videos, I'm compelled to have an extra, impromptu play session with my cats, regardless of my mood.
Same 😁
They have a decent memory for local geography, too.
2 stories related to this:
1) I helped bottle feed our cat Tiger when he was a kitten, so I've always been one of his favorite people.
By any chance, did you name your kittens after the video games?
@@tripunk No, though I'm familiar with the game Bastion. My cat's full name is Prince Bastion and came about as a compromise when I wanted to name him something royal and my husband wanted to name him Sebastian. Celeste's full name is Celestial Grand Majesty.

My cat was kept in a cage for 6 months and given to me when I moved to Puerto Rico. Whenever he heard his captors voice, he would run and hide. He was so traumatized by that experience. I just adopted a tuxedo cat, and she already knows where the treats are located! If I walk into the kitchen she follows me to the cabinet where I keep them….stands there looking up, and meowing until I get them out! I believe they are extremely smart, as I am getting to know Luna!

Nothing more pleasurable than my cats even the 2 I lost last year that I remember each day.
Seriously, Jackson Galaxy helped me raise A LOT of Cats over the years. He's so helpful and really helped me out.
Hello 👋 can I ask you a question if you don’t mind?
Cat or mermaid? Have you a new species, a real CAT/FISH?
Tuxedos are just that special!
Maybe double check of you didn't accidentally adopt a racoon ;)

She's free to come right back, so that may not sound like a huge punishment--but that's pretty much the only time I move her from one spot to another unless there's a safety issue, and for her it's kind of the equivalent of a parent saying, "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."
She's gone from avoiding customers or hanging out just long enough to get petted & swipe at them, to now greeting them at the door, accepting a quick bit of petting, rubbing against them (*sometimes* -- I think it's kind of a thank you if they did it right) and then running over for her snack. Then she'll peace out until the next person comes in. If we don't have many customers she sometimes even waits by the door for them 🤣
Our other shop cat is "just" a shorthaired black cat and is usually overlooked at first...but he's attention motivated, and is so loving and friendly that everyone who likes cats even a little bit ends up adoring him.

He walked around him, sniffed him, and then looked up at me with eyes that said “it’s ok.”
That was three years ago.
@@jasonarthurs3885 Great idea!

My cat had a memory so sharp that I was amazed. I imagine they have photographic memories, as mine would know if you moved even one thing in or from a room, no matter how small. He'd go to the area and investigate.
