My god, look how quick that driver could drive tram down the line! That's insane fast but yeah there wasn't much traffic in those times or perhaps it was a sunday as well. I'll never know what this was like (I can only imagine the thrill of the ride). Too late....I miss 80's melbourne so much...
Batman Avenue, I lost count on the number of times I drove on this memorable road to the city centre. After the converted and closed part of it, I was saddened. I used to own an aquarium shop in Mordialloc at the time and delivered fish for people in high rises who had aquarium tanks, including South Melbourne (now Southbank) and Port Melbourne. The beautiful Melbourne I remember. Nice video, Tressteleg1.
There’s a bike shop next to the old Burwood east tram stop termination corner of Burwood hwy and station street called Waddell bicycles, got my first bike as a teenager there in 1983, not sure if it’s still there, used have to to get the tram from there into to school at st Kevin’s when there was a train strike, it took ages, to cross torak road before they put the freeway in. I wonder how long it will be until they take the tram down to Knox city shopping centre, and then maybe all the way to ferntreegully.
Thanks! The original reason for the orange colour was so that waiting passengers would know immediately that they had to board at the front door, unlike all the W‘s which had centre entrance doors only. Over the years, they eventually were re-painted in what was originally bright green and bright yellow. They are now in a variety of colours for various reasons.
Still vaguely remember traveling on the W trams on the West Preston line to the city and back with mum, and buying tickets from the conductor. Does the restaurant tram still run? I never got a chance to try it out, will have to when I'm back in town next.
Anyone with a camera, especially movie or video did stand out more than today as so few of us had them. This is evidenced by things like video of the Harris Trains which, on TH-cam at least, there is next to nothing besides mine. I was taking colour slides and movie film while other fans still were taking black and white photos. And what do most fans prefer to look at today?
I drove the West Preston Ws plenty of times 1988 to 1994. I also drove the Restaurant tram 442 occasionally. Now there are 3 restaurants but the route they follow is barely a shadow of what it used to be.
You are obviously interested in Melbourne transport in earlier times. Check out my Melbourne Trams 1965 - 1983 silent movie and one on Tait trains with added sound, Taits, Harris Trains and Parcel Vans.
10:09 that's Moonee Ponds Junction? unbelievable. it looks almost empty, none of the pubs and shops I remember going to are there. crazy to see how much this city has changed
You realise this was 1985? Are your memories older or more recent? Every shopping centre changes with time. I walked the length of Wollongong’s main street recently. Of all the businesses that were active when I left in 1987, only one, a travel agency, is still working as such. Every other shop does something different from then. That’s normal.
Hoped to see and hear a Melbourne Leyland National with the ZF 2 speed gearbox but scored this CM Valiant taxi instead 12:03, a sight I haven't seen since 1988, though spotted an ex cab still in its company colours in the late 1990s.

Unbelievable seeing Melbourne the way it was. I’m a bees dick off 30 and I vaguely remember how it was in the 90’s. I’m still perplexed at how different it is now.
Heavens know why. I suppose it was a mix of wanting to bring the 70 Wattle Park trams a bit more into the city, and also make more parklands. I really don’t know if that was a benefit or step backwards. Certainly that nice track through the parklands was rather nice.
tressteleg1 definitely a step backwards because it used to go along the yarra which would of being good for tourists and go past Olympic park which now would of being beneficial for aami park
Hi Matthew. I knew the driver so he was showing me what a Z1 would do. But around 1990 all trams were governed to 65km/h. It may be less now. And I think it was Easter Sunday afternoon.. The job would be so boring and restricted today.
Back then before smart phones and what not, it was obvious when someone was filming or videtaping you so people would turn and look ifthey noticed. Now you don't know if people are taking photos, filming or just looking at their phones.
Yeah it's changed so much that we're a pandemic lockdown capital now, we've come to the end of the line of melbourne being the worst hell hole to live in after a near 32 years which isn't that long when you really think about it. Joy and thrills.
The Z1 and Z2 had a lot of character and made great sounds. And several years later when I started driving them they became my favourite tram. They had been governed by then but there would not have been anywhere on Lygon St etc to wind them up like what you saw.
For many years, all of Melbourne’s trams were green and the doors were in the centre. Around 1970, prototype Z class tram 1041 was built and front door loading was compulsory to pass the seated conductor. This and the later Z class were painted orange (later yellow) to give passengers plenty of warning that they must be ready to get on at the front door. Later the Z class lost seated conductors and passengers could board anywhere, so gradually most were painted green and yellow.
Wow. In 1985 and i have just started school. Looking at this footage just over the hill behind the tram at the traffic lights on Burwood rd I catch a glimpse of the macdonalds I will eat at during lunch break from work 2 doors down later in life. Later the in the vid there is the orange tram terminated at Latrobe university, the same uni i would attend and graduate at. Now the 86 tram extends to RMIT Bundoora. Melbourne has certainly changed yet still remains the same, Melbourne.
Yeah, the mind wants to carry on as always but in some thing the old body says “Naaaa, slow down.” But I still ride my bicycle to the Gold Coast tram. Just slower than you would 😉
Nowadays, Tram drivers have luxurious adjustable cushion seats with aircons and buttons, they put their legs up on the control panel and driving , protesting for even more money ..
Apparently the B-class trams there would of been brand new and no older than a few weeks as they were first rolled out into service the year this was filmed! :)
Not exactly. When I moved to South Melbourne Depot early 1987 there were none apart from the 2 prototypes, B1 2001 & 2002. I started driving August 1988 and just then the first few B2s were arriving from Comeng. I drove all the earliest ones when they were extremely new.
tressteleg1 Okay so that must mean that some of the shots in your video were actually filmed later than Easter 1985 like probably 1988 at earliest though the A class trams would of been in operation in 1985 as they first went into service sometime around 1982 or they were first announced that year as I once did come across an old magazine article from 1982 that was advertising the new upcoming A class trams! :)
It’s amazing seeing those historic trams, with. No driver protection or OH&S , wouldn’t be allowed today...I wonder what people bought back then of a guy (or girl) taking a bulky video camer and following trams 🚃 around the City Network. This was before vlogging was a thing...
In those days and earlier, public thuggery was a bit less common than today. I suppose there were a lot less drug users around as well, as they seem to be a major source of problems. By the time I drove there in 1988, all the drivers’ cabs had full height doors. I was too busy taking video of trams to notice whether anyone was watching me. Some may have thought I was from a TV station while no doubt others thought me just strange. But that was their problem. 😄
At the rate Melbourne goes through trams and train sets they will have the worlds first Hyperloop or gravity vacuum passenger train system. Just imagine moving from anywhere in Melbourne to anywhere in the Sidney or Gold Coast in less than 10 min.

The current foreign operators of Yarra have no interest in the history of Melbourne trams, or anything else Melbourne for that matter. They just want minimum problems to reap the greatest profits.
