    I actually shed a tear at the sight of this. When Melbourne was still Melbourne and Swanston Street was vibrant and alive instead of the empty windswept desert it became. I moved to Melbourne in 1981 and this is the city I fell in love with. I have watched all 3 of the series and the nostalgia is almost overwhelming. How I loved riding down St Kilda Rd on a warm sunny day, sitting in the drop centre section with all the blinds up and the gardens going by. Thank you.

      Agreed. I grew up in Sydney and theirs was/is much simpler. Generally speed limits were set by little boards beside the track, not part of signalling. You may enjoy a future video on the Frankston line where I add a refresher to the Signals Explained video.

      Oops! Somehow that reply attached to the wrong Comment.
      Re yours, Melbourne has changed a lot and become more standardised (and boring). But if you want to really go back in time, check for my earlier video Melbourne Trams 1965 to 1983 if not already seen.

    I'm a real fan of road infrastructure, such as lights, poles and the like. It's awesome seeing the old stuff still in place and in use. Thank you!

    Great footage from the good old days, thanks for filming it all back then and uploading on here. Great to see the Z's and W's and also when they had the trolley poles. And all the older cars too are good to see.

      Believe me! The Z1 and Z2s were by far the most fun to drive of all Melbourne tram classes (at least when the Bs were the newest trams).

    I used to know Barry Jones quite well, I’d love you to get in touch with me and let me know what happened to him. I went off to Uni in 1980 after being at Preston depot with Barry and didn’t see him more than a few times after that.

      In 1994 I bought a house which happened to be literally across the road from Barry Jones. He lived with his mother and neither was in good health. They moved to Western Victoria and first his mother died, and then he did in the early 2000s from memory. I visited him once at that location.

      @@tressteleg1 thank you so much, I really appreciate that you replied. I’ve had an amazing time watching his 3 videos this afternoon, I’ll treasure them ! I’ve subscribed to you too. Barry had an (ex) wife and 3 kids, I’d live to find them too. I don’t suppose you know where abouts in Western Vic he moved to? It was great to hear his voice again.

      @@fortressepiphany9068 Yes he captured a unique period of Melbourne Tramway. I can’t remember the name of the town he moved to but the only motel it had was full that night and I stayed at Dunolly. It was only a rented unit and so long ago he would be gone without trace. in the several years I lived across the road, I can’t especially recall any visits by his children. I don’t particularly recall much mention of them at all either.

      Yes. And I don’t even remember how I came to have it from my late neighbour. It took me some time to work out who gave it to me, but there is no doubt now that it was Barry Jones. More in a few weeks.

    My first visit to Melbourne was on the Spirit in 1978. W2s seemed to make up over 50% of the trams I saw operating. I recall being astounded at seeing my first Z1 pull up near Flinders St in a sea of W2,5 and 6 classes.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About right with W2s although they would have been starting to thin out a bit as new Z class arrived.

      I love the 2’s. cold in the winter, the smell of over heating asbestos pads in the summer and 3mm, non-laminated windows.
      I saw a conductor lurch at the window when the tracks on Balaclava road opposite Caulfield park were very rickety and put his hand through it. Blood everywhere but he kept on checking tickets.

    True melbourne right here! City now feels so dead and lackluster without our W's but the least of melbourne's problems now days. There's a certain vibrance that only 1980's melbourne could provide back at that time, feel SO alive just by viewing this so I know it's not me but melbourne itself now in the 21st century. The restaurant W-class cars are now gone and all we have are the city circle W-class variants but it's not enough to save melbourne now in 2019+. Thank you for these memories....

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At least one of the next W8 upgrades will be modified for Restaurant tram use. At least the ‘plastic trams’ keep the track and overhead in use ready for the day a more enlightened management allows vintage trams to run once again. You have to also be thankful that the trams are not replaced by many more smelly buses.

      Sorry I missed this before. Excuses, rather than reasons.
      Melbourne trams are operated under a regime of Fines for late running, early running cancelled services etc. Bonuses for service completed and on time. My guess is that the company does not understand old trams and fears they will easily break down, delay a timetabled service, and thus cause a fine. Yarra seems not to want anything running that is not an electronically controlled tram, even though they are more likely to break down.

      Yarra is not likely to be the least bit interested in any of Melbourne’s tram history. You may have to go to the tram museum in Sydney although 111 does not run every open day. facebook.com/SydneyTramwayMuseum/photos/a.648088675231509/1797362476970784/?type=3&theater
