Honestly? I really like them! I'm among the minority who *likes* toys to look somewhat different from their animated counterparts -- screen accuracy just wasn't a thing when I was growing up, and often (understandably) the toys had *more* sculpted detail than the animated characters. There's something neat and very much "of the time" about these. Also, I *have* that Ironhide, and your video reminded me that there's another reason I like him so much -- he was among the first figures I modded and visibly improved. If you cut a bit away from the grey spinal column, you can press the torso down all the way, which lets the waist sit flush and pops the head up straight. I want to say I did something else to him, but I can't recall? At any rate, I was proud enough of having "fixed" him that he occupied a place of honor in my collection for quite some time. (He may even still be on display, rather than in a storage bin with so many of my other TFs from back then!) And Galvatron was worse. Bloody hell was he worse. I feel like I did something to him, too, but there was no fixing that figure.
I still think it's absolutely hilarious how, despite the fact we've only really had two arcee toys, people are already like "okay we should stop getting G1 Arcee, it's just impossible to get a good toy of her (even though people love the generations one, but okay)", just because she had ONE toy that people didn't like, yet with Ironhide and Ratchet, who's been actively getting toys since the 80s, it took until 2019 for them to get decent figures, even with masterpiece.
I adore arcee and I want better toys of her, I was shocked to find out how little there actually are. The only one I have that I can confidently say I really like is the ss bumblebee movie version which I was pleasantly surprised with. I’ve never had a good version of her otherwise and it makes me sad :(
@@claires1063it’s good but not great. They screwed up the legs/feet and they are still too squatty. They needed better silhouettes but they are an improvement
I had that Universe Ironhide toy and he was my main ironhide for a while until I got the voyager offroad recolor of bayverse Ironhide. Then the legs broke on my Universe Ironhide and he became my "dead background character" for most of my set ups.
As someone who got into Transformers collecting only recently, I hate how hard the SS figures are to track down for a reasonable price given how sought after they are now. Really hop Hasbro decides to reissue them along with 86 Hot Rod too.
William "Bill" Rawley was the designer of this toy, he has robot hero’s, lots of the horrible and amazing universe toys, Leader Starscream and the Animated Activators. So he’s worked on the good, the bad, and the ugly… I had Ironhide for awhile, and turned it back in for store credit a couple months later…. I kinda miss them, but not really 😂 I also still have Hot Shot and Cheetor from Universe, oof
I have Henkei Ironhide, and yeah, the paintjob is better, but he's still a load of Taco Bell induced waste. Ironically, Henkei advertised Ironhide and Galvatron together. The two worst Universe figures.
I get how you dislike these but their build feels right for them imo. Especially your Ironhide impression 😭 I wish we got more unique versions of these two
I feel like the Reactive toys were the closest we've come in recent years to redesigned G1 character toys, unless Hasbro decides to make more IDW designs.
Eh, the weight fits ironhide as a heavy bruiser type of character. I dunno, I think that if they spruced it up it would look better than his G1 design.
He has no abdomen One of his main attributes in terms of design is the very visible differentiation between the abdomen and the front of the vehicle Even the movie one which looks super different has that attribute
This might be a controversial take but I genuinely think these look fine. It has bothered me without end for years how everyone will complain for hours about these figures. The worst part about either of them is the screws on the front of the arms might look off to some and vehicles are a bit scuffed. I wish people would cut my Fellas some slack and find a different mid 2000's Uniclasserations mold to dogpile (not Galvatron, also overplayed)
J4 the only Transformers classics figures I have are Optimus Prime and Mirage. And I’m okay with that. But I wouldn’t mind having Jetfire, Sideswipe, and Hound
They do look like 💩….but, IRONHIDE’s license plate says OREGON, my hometown state. So I’ve been wanting to get one in the package still and leave it that way. I appreciate the video, cuz now I will definitely shy away from an open version! Lol
I don’t believe it’s help you too, I believe it’s help us, a reference to when ratchet and Megatron were melded together in the marvel comics. The cover has the creature holding a card saying help us with the S being backwards, like a 2
I only wish the '86 Vanbros would come with separated skirt pieces out of the box, as well as maybe some better color matching for Ironhide. Otherwise, they're quite magnificent.
Quite a few of those universe releases in that time has issues with parts coming off in transformation. These two were not ideal considering the anticipation we all had for finally a decent figure of them.
@Jcc2224 I definitely think you should to keep the entertainment value there because the ambience can drag on a bit, but keep it low so it doesn't overpower your voice!
Before you even start a transforming them I was just like..... Those look like they're unpleasant. They look like they would not be any fun. Sometimes you can just look at a transformer and just immediately know that it is not going to be enjoyable at all
Back in the day, I bought ironhide off ebay for $40. Then I decided to try to paint him better. (It did not work) ended up selling him for $3 at a yard sale. Such a waste of money.
the only problem i have with ss86 rachet is that mine broke when i got him out of the box the whole leg fell off and hasbro refused to give me a new one and when i asked for a replacement part they never sent it
i know Universe ratchet was originally part of henkai henkai which was Japanese chromed bits release of classic and later on in line universe molds just either more g1 cartoon accurate color schemes with chromed bits on theme either through vehicle/beast mode or just there weapons on them while fiction is interesting is that doesn't take place in g1 cartoon universe instead own thing imagine plot of first bayformers movie with g1 and sitting of earth is japan and yeah
I have the Henkei versions and really like them, the transformation is clever and fun to do, and they look nice. Theres worse Universe Figure like Dinobot and Cheetor that dont transform well at all and look terrible in both modes…
Nope, really don't like this mould, even though I also bought the Shattered Glass Soundwave version, too. Gotta say, the best Ironhide & Ratchet I've ever seen are still the iGear "Specialist" versions. Just don't like the massive hinges protruding at odd angles that the modern vehicle modes have.

Thirded 🤔🤣
They’re trying their best 🥺
They’re not trying hard enough

As an Oregonian im proud that ironhide has a chest tattoo of the 33rd state! 🦫
Oregon was where most of the early G1 comics took place too!
@MrRcn23 and more specifically Portland(PDX)!
@PdxToycollective takes place in Portland yet somehow not a single Autobot got keyed by a hobo with a used needle
@super3vil710 Great mystery of the Pacific Northwest
As a staunch defender of this mold in the past, I am glad we’ve gotten more G1-ish Ironhide and Ratchet options now than back then.
when i see that ironhide figure i think of absurdly awesome
Those skits were iconic! lol
I genuinely don’t see the problem with these other than the screws 🤷♂️ I think they’re fun

Ethan Klein's brain melted after 10/7/2023
Random thing but I love your channel you’re probably in my top 2 transformers creators I love your stuff !

If they do the better make em the dead ones minus the dead. No clear plastic and their proper colors that were missing
The "Are you sure about that?" was spot on perfect for the comparison. 🤣

The designs themselves are cool but man they should get an updated figure, but i doubt we're ever getting neat G1 reinventions again 😭

What’s funny, everything you said doesn’t tab in on the old figures…. Won’t tab in on my SS86 Ironhide. QC is terrible
silver lining maybe fat ratchet served as an unconscious inspiration for animated ratchet being grumpy and slightly overmass

"Why is his face blue" shout out to classic Thew

I never thought of it that way! I think both interpretations are pretty cool! One of the few things I'll say good about this Ratchet lol
I only wish the '86 Vanbros would come with separated skirt pieces out of the box, as well as maybe some better color matching for Ironhide. Otherwise, they're quite magnificent.
I like them they look kinda bayverse with g1 heads
the best possible defense for these two is that they can be pulled apart easily enough to act as background dead guy fodder.
Quite a few of those universe releases in that time has issues with parts coming off in transformation. These two were not ideal considering the anticipation we all had for finally a decent figure of them.
Yo J4, how's the collection video coming along?
It's like 3/4ths the way edited! And I still haven't decided on if i wanna add background music...
