Christmas '82 the last thing expected was, that this tiny one would still matter 42 years later. Back then I've painted it with a pink touch up pen & even opened it to find out that touching a circuit slows and distorts the unit in an extremely musical way. I've even tried to find a way using it as a keytar but my stuck on stubbles fell off! 🫠
It only survived until '85. I'd have rebought it back then but there weren't any VL tones exhibited in my country's shops anymore, just the PT20 with kind of similar sounds but without ADSR. Just the SK1, I've been given one year later, had the power to console about VL-1's loss that I nonetheless rebought in new.condition, with any accessory, even an unscratched box, somewhere in the 2000s for the same price as new. The previous owner told, only having used it once in '81, repacked afterwards & stowed away!
There's a good old wave song on yt by Helen Schneider called "Out For The Night", no fun song like "Da Da Da", but real music by quality musicians. It starts with the "Rock 2" pattern
What do you think of it?

You were adventurous to open that little machine and great that you were able to buy it in new condition, which is hard to find in 2024. I will check out the Hellen Schneider song. I like the machine, it is fun to generate ideas in your bed with headphones. I am sure the Teenage Engineering people got some ideas from this when building the OP-1.

@@NostalgicExplorer You'll perhaps be surprised by the song. Helen was US-born but mainly successful in Eurooe. Pat Benatar covered her "Shadows Of The Night" (you surely know) blew it up to a huge sounding anthem. (To me one of the most catchy & touching mastierpeces of all time)
Anyway, back to "Out For The Night". The yt-source might come from a record, perhaps not even a great turntable & sounds comparably thin compared to today's standards but it's anyway still a creative example of using VL-1 "Rock 2" as metronome thru the entire song. A whole band's playing in sync with it. Synth parts are Pophet 5.

I love the old CASIOs. I wanted to have an SK-1, but it was always overpriced, and then accidentaly found one very cheap SK-200 on facebook marketplace. It was only £100, and even delivered to my door 😁

That's a great deal! Who delivers a small Casio to your door? I am seeking an SK-1 too, but waiting for a reasonable price.

Cheers! Just picked one up off a gentleman for $50 dollars! So excited. My father had one of these when my sister and I grew up! My sister was born in 79, myself in 83 ... so this way a toy we were NEVER allowed to play with lol! Now I have my own!

So bad they didn't allow you to play it. I have always thought that you should always let kids use musical instruments and explore it's sounds. I am glad you have your own now.
