    To anyone about to venture on this task, I have a few tips from our friend hindsight.
    - A strip of clear parcel tape across the keys/buttons will save you a few fiddly minutes further down the line.
    - The slider tips for volume and balance should be removed before opening as they're a pain to find on the floor.
    - If your symptom is a crackling/quiet speaker try some contact cleaner in the volume/balance sliders combined with some back and forth motions before going any further.
    - The LCD ribbon is extremely fragile as it is glued rather than soldered. To restore functionality without heating up the glue & re-sticking, I used the shaft of a cotton bud to lay over the contacts for the screen, combined with a lolly stick cut to size to apply some additional pressure on the rear of the circuit board once closed. (If you're from the future and find a lolly stick with "LCD Pressure Fix" written on it... Hello!)
    Thank you for putting this video together. It's always reassuring to have something to reference. Despite my issues with the LCD, after some TLC with contact cleaner a few stubborn keys were sorted and the VL-1 was loud and clear instead of whisper quiet. I also realised that the OP-1 was inspired by this device too.
    Thanks for the nostalgia trip with some of the other videos!

      Thanks for the tips, I got one yesterday from market for 41 bucks It was working really well with great looking body and LCD fully functional no bad keys suddenly today it had crackling/quiet, on and off sound after I changed my batteries, I thought my batteries was bad but it's not I cleaned it up and end up made my LCD looking worst with missing numbers. and still couldn't fix it, Everything on the board looks fine and I don't wanna go so far as replacing chips sadly.

      I just tried some contact cleaner in the vol/bal sliders, and flicked the pots a bit (w/o c.c.), as mine was crackly and very low in volume. Now it's dead. Everything worked before the cleaning, apart from crackling and volume. Now, no life. Wat do? :/
      A tip on opening it: no need for a tool, do this instead: push the plastic just under the swing/3-key, while carefully pulling the bottom part open. The "shell" is attached in one spot on both sides, in the middle of the keyboard, so just be careful and use just enough force and it will open quite easily (just remember that it's also attached on the backside)

    • @Liliedugg
      @Liliedugg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fragile LCD ribbon is interesting. Were there sound when the problem occured? Guess I'm diving deaper into this tomorrow, although I'm a novice. I really hope it'll arise from the dead.
      The ribbon cables on mine are green btw. Also, the capasitators between the volume slider and the line out are placed a bit differently

    Wow. 1979/80. Surface mount technology and switches that are built exactly as they are still used today on mid-range keyboards. I wish that a device from today could be found in 44 years with the same frequency that these keyboards are offered today. Greetings from Germany!🇩🇪🤝

      Sorry for the delay in responding and sorry to hear of your Casio problems. It is rumoured that nothing can be done to fix LCD display. I am unsure if this is the case. I do have one with a faulty display so one day I might try to fix it. The crackle may just be dirty sliders which might be fixed with a potentiometer cleaning spray for lubricated switch cleaner. I'm not expert in repairs so this isn't advice, just what I might try. Thanks for your comment.

    Great work. Your video gave me hope and then, after seeing what was required for the fix, despair! My VL-TONE which I’ve had from new has almost identical symptoms: stuck in calculator mode and wont power off.I do though have every single calculator button working, so I must have a pin or two more than you still live on my chip. Unfortunately it’s beyond me to fix this by replacing the chip. Occasionally I’m giving it a vigorous shake an slap and trying the batteries again - but I don’t suppose that’s really likely to help! Enjoyed watching your success though - good job..

    I case it's useful info for anyone working on these... you don't need to jump any of the switches while testing. The only switch you need to operate is power and this is a logic-level toggle since the device seems to be always-on. You can just touch the switch briefly onto the pads in any position and it will toggle the device into any on-mode, or off. It will stay in that state that until you toggle a different state. No permanent jumpers required...

    Excellent video, despite production problems. I was wondering however as only 3 lines were silent on the VL-1's processor did you check to see if those lines were used on the FT-10. It may be possible to have the FT-10 working to some degree even if you were forced to hard wire the octive and instrument selection. (I have been known to talk crap at times, I am aware that this could be one of those occasions). Best of luck ;)

    • @RetroTechRepair
      @RetroTechRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very interesting point. The actual repair was a while ago now and my memory is a bit hazy as this video took ages to edit. I think I did confirm the signal on the lines of the PT-10, and all the lines that had failed on the VL-1 were definitely used on the PT-10. When I bridged the VL-1 switches i essentially hard-wired octave and instrument so I doubt it would have worked.... I like your thinking though. Got me thinking too. Thanks for the comment!

    Great Video. Just got given a Casio VL-Tone. The battery compartment is quite corroded, although it looks a bit different from yours, as there are only Two Springs at one end, whilst the top edge has Two brass looking strips, which have fallen out, am not sure how they fit back in. Having messed about with it for a while, it doesn't appear to be working, on batteries. I have discovered by connecting a DC Power supply that it Jumps into action and does indeed function. Do note the DC supply should be Reverse polarity. -ve Centre. I have a Casio CTK-670 Keyboard, which also uses reverse polarity, as opposed to my Yamaha, which used a similar voltage, although the polarity is different, +ve Centre. So beware folks.

    • @RetroTechRepair

      Hi yes. I discovered the polarity issue to my cost on a Casio SA21 (it's in a different vid). You can buy various spring contacts on eBay, that you can sometimes make fit. Super cup football, galaxy invader videos of mine have examples. Good luck with it and thanks for taking the time to comment. Really appreciate it 😊👍

    What do you think it is ?

    • @RetroTechRepair
      @RetroTechRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I do not have it anymore so I can't check. Sometimes these devices have a switch built into the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphones are plugged in. These can "stick" open disabling the speaker. I don't know if the VL1 is this way, but if I were looking at it, that's where I would start. Hi Aeson. I am not an expert in these repairs so I can't really give you advice. My guess is it was not to do with the keys falling out, but that perhaps some of the connections to the display were damaged during the assembly/disassembly process. If it were mine I might try gentle pressure to the ribbon cable at each end to see if the situation improved. If things got better I might try some foam of something to keep pressure on the cable when assembled. This is not advice just what i might try of it were my own. Good luck

      Hi sorry for the delay in responding. I doubt you'd have blown the speaker or damaged anything just by plugging in a speaker to the line out. Hi I'm not an expert in these repairs so please don't consider this advice, but I suspect the speaker socket has a built-in switch that disconnects the internal speaker when an external speaker is plugged in. • @RetroTechRepair

      I would check all of the tracks with multimeter, you may have a cracked track from flexing. Note down all the the keys that don't work and see if they share the same track. The LCD is run directly from the processor. Other than the ribbon/solder joint Lt the LCD there isn't much to check. If the joints and ribbon are good it could be a faulty processor or LCD. Good luck with the repair and thanks for the comment.

I've tried the AC adapter socket, cleaned the battery contacts, and inspected internally (only thing close to an issue was some dust, no visibly dodgy components), yet nothing on the screen and no noise - I'm a little stumped. I found the same - removed the board and found the ribbon completely separated from the PCB. looks like it was like that before I got there but not great to see. pressing the ribbon onto the pads doesn't revive it either so it might have failed at both ends. The main fault preventing sound was elsewhere but would have been nice to have the display working too...
