  • The 2023 Mazda6 mid-sizer might not be long for the world, with traditional passenger cars increasingly on the nose in the face of the SUV phenomenon. Point being, it doesn't look long for this world.
That said, the Skoda Octavia rival has received a model-year update, one that ushers in a special-edition 20th Anniversary that comes alongside a welcome power boost for the sedan and wagon's 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week the Mazda6 20th Anniversary wagon to find out if more buyers should be flocking to the model. After all, it ticks a lot of boxes.

Despite it's age it's still one of the smartest looking wagons around. A great all rounder.

Rear seat only has storage pockets and cup holders.
Proceeds to show an unmentioned storage space when talking about the heated seats

Is it true that in Japan they have an option of AWD?

    • @jdmguy44
      @jdmguy44 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah that's true of quite a lot of mainstream models in Japan. You could have a Mazda 2 with AWD for example. Not sure if that's still the case though.

the sedan somehow has a longer wheelbase than the wagon...which has a better rear legroom

    I have a 2018 Mondeo 1.5l 165hp and a 2022 Mazda 6 Wagon 2.0l 165hp.
Both cars are similar trim level (second trim level). There are only single feature that is better in Mazda, the adaptive cruise control, however, this adaptive cruise uses brakes a lot, so in the end I will need to turn it off, I can do all these things with minimal brake use using regular cruise control. I don't want to replace brakes unnecessarily, and using brakes obviously will influence fuel economy. There are also many situations where this adaptive cruise is breaking, while there is really no car in front , but there is a car on the other lane. A decent driver can predict these things much better, and maybe not having adaptive cruise makes a driver more aware. In the end it's a complicated topic, but it's probably very much true that adaptive cruise may reduce accidents on average, because an average driver suffers from concentration problems on a long drive. But it's not true that this improves things much for everyone and in every scenario, in many cases it's actually quite annoying.
Both cars have stock audio, Ford audio is great, while Mazda 6 audio is on the edge of being unacceptable, the frequency response is very unpleasant and the controls are very primitive. I am planning to upgrade it, because I can hardly listen to it. But, if your only music device has been the smartphone, or if you're partly deaf, then perhaps Mazda stock audio is ok for you in the sense that it does produce sound of the appropriate volume.
Btw. I used to have 2012 Mazda 6 with BOSE, and 2008 and it was just fine, nothing spectacular (of course, subwoofer makes some difference, but I don't need umpf umpf in my car, I just need a normal bass response). I also had a 2008 Accord with premium sound, and it was similar to my 2018 Mondeo.
Ford has keyless entry for all doors, Mazda does not have it at all, and even if it was there, it would be for the driver door only. Another issue with not having keyless entry, is the Mazda 6 key, with tiny open/close buttons, the designer of this key must have hated the buyers of Mazda entry-trim cars ;-)
The noise level is much lower in Ford at highway speeds. Somewhere around 160km/h the difference is really clear. At 100km/h both cars are OK.
Mazda's 165hp 2.0l is in real life way less powerful compared to Ford's 1.5l 165hp Ecoboost. Essentially Mazda has no power at all at lower rpms, and it is quite unpleasant to spin it to 6000rpm each time one want to quickly accelerate. This is probably just cutting the corners, because it is just cheaper to make a non-turbo engine, even with the high compression ratio. This high compression ratio does not help much.
Infotainment system is quite basic for today's standards in both cars. This is fine for 2018 car but it's not fine for 2022 car. And in some cases Ford is better, e..g. Mazda cannot display tire pressures, while Ford can. Both cars have parking sensors, butFord only has a rear camera, while Mazda has 360 deg camera. But this 360 deg camera anyway has large blind spots at the corners of the car (so it's not a true 360 in this sense), so in the end it does not allow really precise maneuvers. For tight parking ti's all about corners. So this 360 deg camera is more like a toy, it's just poorly made and it's not a game changer.
Ford also has heated windshield with small wires inside the glass. But actually I think these things should be forbidden because they compromise the visibility. Also, there are very few real-life scenarios where this heated windshield helps, by the time it's works one can easily remove the ice from the windshield by hand.. So I'm happy not to have the heated windshield in Mazda.
In summary, I believe that Mazda 6 is a solid car, but it is way behind the competition in most respects. 10-20 years ago Japanese D-segment cars could perhaps compete with similar level German-based brands like VW or Ford. But this doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and probably the only advantage of Mazda could be slight advantage in reliability.

The 2012 Mazda and the 2022 are quite different, especially when it comes to equipment, fit&finish and HNV. And the lack of low end torque is easily fixed with the auto box. Still, I'd agree that for today's standard the 2.5 is far mor suitable.
And despite its age, it's still the best handling fwd saloon.
