My husband is from the area so I've been to all these places, it's just funny to see it on TH-cam! I didn't know about the paint dyes inside the mosque downtown. I actually lived there for a few months with his family and let me tell you... learning Gheg Albanian is hard enough but then doing anything outside of the Albanian villages and downtown Tetovo trying to deal with the Macedonian language... I'm just glad my husband was always there to translate. Learning more about Albanian culture and the Albanian diaspora, though, is incredibly interesting. Because of COVID we post-poned having an actual wedding, so I'm excited to be wearing dimija handmade by his mom this summer for our wedding in the area! My favorite Albanian foods, though have to be ajvar (goes with EVERYTHING) and peppers in gjizë (I'd go through one of those small buckets of it they sell in the grocery store in a week haha
Macedon dates about 7 centuries BC (until 2nd century BC when Rome conquered the area), Slavic migration in the region occurred about 7 century AD. Today's NM majority is Slavic people. You'd have to go to UN to change the the national composition from being designated as "Slavic" people to Greek (?)... there is no lineage from Ancient Macedonia to Slavic Macedonia and there are over two thousands of years in between to resurrect Ancient Macedonia. Any heritage to Ancient Macedonia is represented within the wider Hellenic culture heritage, and Greece is the only representation of the Macedonian heritage.

Then Tito happened, and he made Macedonia.... The recent census showed that Albanians in NM are at 29.5% (NM 2021 census) - that makes them a CONSTITUTIONAL minority there. There can't be a NM state without participation of Albanian fraction in the small nation of two million residents including Albanians. I have studied ancient Greek culture and history, and also have studied Ancient Greek language in University. The socialist regime taught ancient Macedonian history separate from ancient Greek history, probably as advised by Mareshal Tito. The problem is that you have to prove your Macedonian-ness with something... your DNA is south Slavic similar to Serbs and Bulgarians, you speak Bulgarian or a easily mutually intelligible dialect of Bulgarian. Your customs, music, folklore, costumes, language and history is Slavic. UNO, and all other international organizations consider you a south slavic nation. Not sure what ancient Macedonians spoke, probably a language between Thracian/Illyrian and Greek or something in between, but for sure they did not speak what you speak today. Alexander the Great was taught by Aristotle, and conquered the world and spread the Hellenistic culture all over the provinces he conquered. Soon after his death in 196BC Rome took over and Greece fell never to be heard of again until 1821/25; so did ancient Macedonia; nothing. After the fall of ottoman empire Greece acquired the lands that were inhabited by ancient Macedonians and considered their culture as part of Greek heritage, just like Sparta and other regions of Greece were considered part of Hellenistic culture and not only Athens. Four small states in the Balkans and three prime ministers are Albanians, plus one deputy prime minister in North Macedonia. If not for Albania, FYROM would not have lasted for two weeks under the Greek blockade in 1992.
Last census (open Wikiepda page on Tetovo) shows the city at 57% ethnic Albaninas, not 80% as your friends told you. When you do a video, try to talk with different people of different origin. And do your own research. Because if you do, as you do here, talk just with limited people from only one background.. you risk to hear just one side of the story. In other words, you risk to become a mouthpeace of their ethnic propaganda narrative. You risk of spreading wrong information to your public, and generally not understanding the city. The Western powers made it complicated. The creation of borders in 1913 left Albanians outside Albania. That obviously creates conflicts in Kosovo and N.
