So I can tell you from experience being a part of the DSM community your gonna see why this car is so underrated. The 4G63 is a great motor which can handle a lot of abuse, and yes DSM are temperamental and that’s due to being beat and abused over time like this poor car has, but luckily it’s on the right hands and being able to make 350whp on the janky set up it’s on its very impressive. With some love and a stand-alone ECU and some E85 you’ll make fast and easy power, and the big plus is that it’s AWD even if the swap is dog shit, it’s gonna hell you big time. I’m super excited to see this girl come to live and rip down the streets. Just be patient w the car and get to know its character, welcome to the DSM community!
@@onecleangtiI wouldn't say that was the fault of the platform. For me It should be counted as a poor job of the previous owner for sure. A shame actually, some nice parts were up there, if you know what I mean.

Over the years, I go to Gears and Gasoline when I'm itching for high quality car videos and find myself even more surprised by how great the production value is and how knowledgeable these guys are.
Love me an Eclipse ! Sad to see it in such a rotten state, though... I know it's a lot of work and money, but I really hope you try and save this car. Can"t wait for the next episode.
Unfortunately that's how most of them are now, unless you're willing to drop a ton of money on an increasingly rare example. It's a shame, because I'd love to pick up another 1G.
Thats easy. Rebuild it from the ground up with a proper budget. They are unreliable because $20 and a trip to home depot would net you 50hp. Then you could boost around until you found a bigger turbo for $300 and slapped it on. Make sure you set the boost to 21psi on the new turbo since thats what you were running on the stock one. Then when your maxing out the injectors and overunning the stock BOV (if you haven't switched to a crushed metal BOV) it blows up. Not sure why it died it was only 300hp or so
As a moron who bought a rusted and clapped out impreza coupe, I completely understand the pain and frustration. A good body shop that’s willing to help will save a lot of heartache! Love all the videos guys! Now we need a New York to California series with the RX-8 and GST
Im excited to see what happens when the car gets a proper 3" exhaust and some more work, since its on dsmlink v3 and it obviously isnt using a MAF that means the MAF signal is free to use for a ethanol sensor, means getting the car onto E85 wouldnt be hard as its now got giant injectors and a solid fuel pump. TLDR a 3" exhaust and some e85 would let this car easily pickup alot of power very easily IMO
This is a good build, a little of the basics of how to make an older/someone’s else’s project work. Even though the body is bad, he definitely got his money’s worth on a built engine that didn’t pop at 33 psi. 6500 for a 33 psi 4g63....
I’m 2017 before the gsx raised in value I took my cousin to go look at a 98 gsx. It had a beautiful paint job and ran pretty good and and appeared fairly visible. It had a questionable strut tower repair. But looking under the car you were greeted with appeared to be a fresh black undercoating. Well we bought the car for 5k and needed to jack it up. The frame rail disintegrated. We realized the entire underbody was covered and behind repair. Eventually the rear control arm mounting point on the body disintegrated. The car was mechanically totaled. Now it’s my donor for my gst.

Ayyyyeeee welcome to car rebuilding/restoration! Get it stopping, get it running, make your structural mods, then strip it down and fix all rust. Then build the car using new bushings, seals, and consumables where possible. Then you get to spend the next year chasing down gremlins... it's fun!

i LOVE the Rx8 ... by far my favorite cheap sport car and the best part 90% of the ppl who bought those didnt know how to maintain them so now they re almost free ...
Yeah I have 3 eclipses and the trunk, the rockers, strut towers and where the seat bolts too all were rusty and had to be repaired luckily I weld so it was all done properly.
Drove a ‘95 eagle talon ESI and eventually got a ‘97 talon TSI AWD. That was the first time I had held a crank in my hands and then drove that same engine after rebuilding it. Needless to say I’m very fond of these money pits. (My mom also has an rx8 that I grew up driving when she let me lol)
I did a conversion like this before. The rails are weak, and you have to use a 2 by 4 to jack it up. A gsx 3 inch exhaust is expensive and hard to find in stock. I used the gst exhaust which was cheap ebay thing and moved a bend in the dp to clear the transfer, also fabbed the axle back to be straight.

Hey guys I've owned several DSMs. Take it easy on that transmission AFAIK no one builds them anymore and parts are scarce. That rust is bad but not the worst I've seen Usually they rust on the strut towers and rear rocker panels.
I'm excited for this build. I know there is a lot of rust which is unfortunate, but I know what you guys are capable of building and I can't wait to see what you do with this one.
Just sold my 2g gs-t and I miss it so much 😢 I sold it for 5k, no rust virtually at all running and driving amazingly too and the interior was in such great shape I loved it so much only blemish was a 3 inch sized dent in the quarter. Still in stock turbo and side mount I took pride in keeping it stock, within 4 days new owner sent me a picture of a new turbo swap and a front mount intercooler with no supporting mods. I wanted to cry. I regret it so much
Could have went dodge stealth and chased electrical gremlins till the end of time I guess. I love it and yet very sad that rolling dumpster fire cost 6500
As the owner of a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX I can say from personal experience that they are a fucking money pit. But god damn when it is running right it is just insanely fun to drive. DSMlink is really old but it could do self tuning with a wide band, at least close enough to get you drivable but you will need a dyno tune, I went from around 300 whp off the learned tune to around 400 whp and damn near doubled the gas mileage. The sunroof in those cars is known to leak and it gets the floor and back seat well, that gas tank access is factory but there should be a rubber boot over it.
This is one of, if not, my dream car. Its really sad to know most of them are rusty like that. Still, someday I hope I will be able to build one. Nardo gray. Carbon fiber hood. Bout 300 HP. Some cool wheels and thats it. I dont need much more than that. Street built.
I respect the diversity of your projects, the research education and fun you gents put forward. Horsepower isn’t everything for me. Thank you very much
Omg I f-ing love it. That's the most dsm thing I've ever seen. "No tune, but I put all the wastegate springs available in so it should make all the power" I remember back in the day people welding the wastegate flapper shut on the stock turbo for all the boost. Hahahaha this is the exact dsm experience I could have hoped for you.
As a current dsm owner 7 to be exact I'm super pumped to see this build. Your cars still not as rusty as my winter beater tsi awd jack stands go right through my frame rail. If I'd have known you guys were looking for one I could have sold you a rust free California gst bone stock with mint interior for far less then 6.5k. Fuck in rust belt canada they aren't even that pricy
I love this alongside the RX8 restoration/build. Maybe I just romanticize cars more than most, but I love "saving" a car and making it as great as it can be
when I got my Dsm I researched it a lot, and found a track test of gs-t and gsx. The gs-t was quicker around the track so that's what I got. 13 years later and I don't really have any regrets.
This is definitely my new favourite/top TH-cam build. I really hope the rust issue can be solved (economically) and this car saved. High horsepower builds are fun and all but there is an opportunity here (like most of the G&G builds) to save this iconic car. Best of luck to you. Also, we gotta go back to 2 videos a week please 🙏
11:19 Hey Ben👋🏽 It's a great platform to track. I think you should restore the Evo and track the eclipse. Just like the other Ben have the Subbie and track the civic, you should restore and have the Evo and track the eclipse along with the na MR2 so you have a na and turbo track car with a beautiful Evo
I found out my sunroof was leaking, or had been leaking for months. Clogged drains. It was a huge project to pull the interior out in order to remove the water. That and the carpet has tons of foam so I had to squeeze all of the water out. Then had to run a hairdryer and sit by it for a few hours to evaporate the dampness.
As a person who had been in and around DSMs for over 15 years none of this is surprising nor out of character for our community. This is absolutely what you get when a chassis like this can be had for so cheap and can essentially make power for even cheaper. It attracts a certain type of owner and leads to our beautiful cars ending up in this state. Remember the rust you see is like the tip of an ice burg where the majority of it is below the surface out of sight. Ben best of luck and I know this car is in capable good hands. I'm sure you get this often but if you need anything I'd be happy to lend advice/help or most likely know someone who can.
These 2nd gen Eclipses were favorites of mine growing up. Wanted a '99 GS-X for the longest time. Could never afford one when they were new, and nowadays I don't have the time, space, or mechanical know-how to properly bring one back to life. Instead I'm going to live vicariously through this series.
I LOVE this new eclipse series. I bought a 95 Talon right after graduating high school in 2013 so I could learn how to drive stick. I loved that car, it was so much fun to drive, and it also rusted away into oblivion to the point of it being a danger to me and everyone else on the road. Can't wait to live vicariously through Ben and see him stress out like I did 11 years ago lol
i bought a 1999 eclipse gs and got really lucky, it was owned by an older guy who was looking to get rid of it so the inside was good, a lil rust but thats basically common on an eclipse now and i got it for 3k so it isnt an awd or turbo'd but i am going to do those things to it eventually and it hasnt broken yet as ive had it for 1 year already
Man this is a dream build for me. I had 2 talson tsi awds and a gst. Had to sell them for college courses. Miss them so much. Hopefully one day i can build one again. Cant wait to follow this series.
Love to see you guys picking up my dream car and yes ( it’s horrible I know but it is what it is). I couldn’t believe you picked this up and I was so excited like a little kid when I seen the cover. I hope to see more
I still have my 98 Eclipse Spyder Convertible bought and lives to this day in VA. It's lived it's life mostly ungaraged with a leaky top and it doesn't have rust like that. WTF?! lol
When that guy chimes in saying "my buddy has a built motor eclipse with a big ass turbo making 650 hp and will come gap all of you tonight" this is usually what the car actually is.
okay yeah i bought a GS eclipse about 3 or 4 years ago and had no rust at all, 90K km and also sat in a heated garage, sold it unfortunately but about your feeling when seeing the rust bucket you bought and pretty sure didn't planned to deal with that much rust i know how it feels. I bought 2 years ago my mr2 sw20 and spend about 1 year and a half restoring ALL the holes it had because of the rust and various couple of owners it had before me and i still fighting against rust. It's def a Trust the process
I have 3 eclipses and watching your rust inpectuon started giving me major anxiety about my gst that I’m converting to a gsx with a donor car that’s rotted out. I know the gst has some rust( primarily rocker) and this just got me all sorts of anxiety rethinking about it.
I’m currently completely restoring a GST and converting to AWD. I also just got my Galant VR4 driving. My advice to you when it comes to DSM’s is: 1) DON’T cut corners 2) Use OEM as much as possible
I love these model car, best looking Mitsu out there, looking forward for more episodes of this build, hopefully you guy put some heart into it, I know is a lot to ask due to the conditions it is in, but is like polish a rough Dimond, it will come out very nice.
I love builds like this keep it coming . i personally own a 1998 garaged GSX . no rust and full of modes making over 400HP . Having a mechanic back ground i do all the work myself. Its fun to launch it and leave a 4 wheel burn out.
Love this series of builds (RX8 and Eclipse). Its going to be interesting to see how far you guys go with these two cars. Hopefully they both get brought back to life, and saved.
It'd honestly be super cool to see a collab with Do It With Dan if you're both willing and interested considering what he has learnt from the rust issues in his camaro. The eclipse seems in much better shape than his camaro is or at least was.
get running good and re-shell into a lighter less rusty 90s mirage FTW! this is THE move!!😎 but if you keep and repair, that'll be cool to see too. Best of luck whichever route you go, DSM life! Merry Christmas Ben
The frame rails are smashed because people put jacks there, but the rails is not made for that, they are made out of really thick metal. Don't just change the bushings on the front lower arms, the ball joint on the lower control arm fails quite commonly even if everything seems fine.
Please PLEASE check the shifter arm, I owned a gst in just as bad condition and one day thanks to the Mitsubishi Chrysler quality the weak ass weld on the shifter broke while driving and I had to hold the lever together with a nut and bolt that would loosen up and require tightening every few shifts. Went to a junkyard and found another shifter that had been rewelded because the high quality build Mitsubishi and Chrysler are known for requires it or else you will have no gears
i don’t remember where, and i could possibly be wrong, but i’ve heard that it’s pretty common for sound deadening to hold moisture which is quite obviously shown on this car with the way all the rust was directly under where all the sound deadening was. While it is unfortunate that the rust got that bad, it was basically inevitable as long as there was sound deading in the car
Buy a welder, get some metal and start fixing the floor pans. It’s not the end of the world. A journey of learning to weld and fixing this would be an awesome series to watch. I’d love to have this car as a project. Spent a ton of time in a gsx in high school.
Now you're speaking my language I love my 1 gtsx eclipse and I recently just sold my rx8 i miss it dearly... Still have the evolution and two turbo rx7 tenth AE
Definitely excited to watch this build series, but it definitely looks like a chassis swap is needed with the rust on this one. Super weird to have THAT much rust under the seats; probably had water sitting in the car.

I respect the diversity of your projects, the research education and fun you gents put forward. Horsepower isn’t everything for me. Thank you very much
Omg I f-ing love it. That's the most dsm thing I've ever seen. "No tune, but I put all the wastegate springs available in so it should make all the power"
I remember back in the day people welding the wastegate flapper shut on the stock turbo for all the boost. Hahahaha this is the exact dsm experience I could have hoped for you.
I really enjoyed this episode and I reallly enjoyed Ken.. super awesome guy. ❤
Im an eclipse owner and im starting to love my eclipse more because of this video 😂
Okay, I'm stoked for this build and I knew that exhaust was going to be a problem 😂
I like how Mark said he is a "Mitsubishi guy" and asked if the smashed framed rails are a Mitsubishi thing. 😅
Thats how you know hes always had too much money for a DSM😂
@@BrokeWrench he doesn't even know what DSM is.
Enjoying this build😅
WE MAKING IT OUT THE UNDERGROUND WITH THIS ONE 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️💯💯💯💯
Cringe
These 2nd gen Eclipses were favorites of mine growing up. Wanted a '99 GS-X for the longest time. Could never afford one when they were new, and nowadays I don't have the time, space, or mechanical know-how to properly bring one back to life. Instead I'm going to live vicariously through this series.
you might immediately regret it but i dont! looking forward to more content!!
Mark is funny asf and very entertaining, same to both Ben’s of course
There is my boi Kenny, BlackSheepTuning !!! Yes Sir!!
Now this is something that I can get behind. Love the work and yes... Every northeast DSM is a sunken ship.
i bought a 1999 eclipse gs and got really lucky, it was owned by an older guy who was looking to get rid of it so the inside was good, a lil rust but thats basically common on an eclipse now and i got it for 3k so it isnt an awd or turbo'd but i am going to do those things to it eventually and it hasnt broken yet as ive had it for 1 year already
My advice to you when it comes to DSM’s is:
1) DON’T cut corners
2) Use OEM as much as possible
the tuner guys are so nice
I a 98 and 92 GSX currently. Likely grabbing another soon. I've built and tuned quite a few over the last 12 years or so.
6500$ for it is crzy. i totally didn't expect that! it looks more like a 1500$ car initially
My S14 had rust straight through the floor on both sides. We cut out and replaced the entire floor pan. Lots of work but it is doable! Save this car!
Very nice to see a RX8 and a eclipse being revived together on te channel…cannot wait for the rest of the build series🙏🏻
It'd honestly be super cool to see a collab with Do It With Dan if you're both willing and interested considering what he has learnt from the rust issues in his camaro. The eclipse seems in much better shape than his camaro is or at least was.
I absolutely love this!
I'm a sucker for DSMs!!
I want that car now😭😭😭😭 in my eyes
It's the most beautiful thing ever!!!
get running good and re-shell into a lighter less rusty 90s mirage FTW! this is THE move!!😎 but if you keep and repair, that'll be cool to see too.
Kenny’s the man !!
