    You'd swear you're hearing oboes, clarinets, strings, and brass. Saxophones have such an incredible range. They were designed to be this flexible. What vision Adolphe Sax had!

      I was actually looking for that clarinet they had hidden in the back. Amazing. And the alto player's sound was beautiful, if my eyes were closed I'd swear it was an oboe. And she plays super high and sounds just like a piccolo, superb.

    The arrangements really exploit the unique sounding ranges of the different saxes. Alto can sound like a clarinet or a French horn. Soprano like an English horn -- or a flute/piccolo, depending on the register. Baritones and Bass and Contra-bass saxes can mimic bowed or pizzicato cellos or bass violins. Truly amazing group. Dynamics, tuning, and control are top-notch. Bravo! What a treat to listen to.

    I only have two questions: Who transcribed this, and when was it first published/performed (though I'll venture that 2013 is the first publication/performance date). Truly, and coming from a clarinetist who has played all six clarinet divisions (from Eefer to contrabass) and saxophones (from soprano to bass), saxophones can best capture the essence of the full orchestra better than any instrumental family -- including clarinets and strings -- and I still want to hear a full clarinet choir, a full double reed choir, a full sting ensemble capture this beautiful and essential movement in the Repertoire for comparison's sake.
    It is of my opinion, as a clarinetist, that a saxophone choir blends better with itself than a clarinet choir does, and still manages to upstage a string ensemble or bassoon/double reed choir. And I've heard a phenomenal (if amateur) bassoon choir perform the Finale of Tchaikovski 4 live.

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Christopher Steig I don't think you can do as many things with a saxophone ensemble as a string orchestra. You can mimic orchestral colors well with saxophones, if you have a lot of saxophones and if it's very choral music such as this. But you wouldn't we able to get any sharp attacks, hair-raising scales, pizzicatos etc. Strings have a much bigger variety of textures. This is a very wind and brass dominated piece, so of course the saxes are better suited to it than a string orchestra. But similarly, I don't think this ensemble could play something like souvenir from Florence convincingly.

    • @matthewmunoz4318
      @matthewmunoz4318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Arrogance on the part of Adolphe Sax and others during his time. Sax would often challenge orchestras and other musicians to play against his saxophones. These orchestras then forbade the use of saxophone in their orchestras. The Belgian Army, however, used the saxophones for their marches. This led to the Saxophone to be associated with marching bands, and consequently furthered orchestras’ distaste towards the Saxophone. Furthermore, many Blues and Jazz musicians had used the Saxophone for its ability to imitate the sound of a wailing singer. As a result of the association with both marching band and jazz, hardly any composers wrote orchestral pieces with saxophone in mind.
      Hope I answered your question :)

      I don't know that you can say it sounds better than a normal orchestra. It has a unique sound, and so does an orchestra. One isn't better than the other.

      The saxophone is capable of notes of any length, ranging from very fast repetitions, or staccato, to sustained notes for as long as you want. For the latter, circular breathing is used. They should have been a standard part of classical orchestras, but a campaign against them was waged by French clarinet manufacturers, from the 1800's until the last Century, who saw the sax as a threat to their business.

This is a lollipop of a piece, and it can be so ordinary after so many listenings, but this gets the original thrill back.
