Hey guys I’m glad you enjoyed the video here’s the video of me attempting this challenge Is right here I tried to play it as perfectly as I could come check it out th-cam.com/video/_8ncOBQsaKg/w-d-xo.html
Still boggles my mind we grew up with him... Went to church with him....hung out... And never really knew fully how talented he was until now. This is incredible!
Would have been funny if he listened to the whole thing and then had absolutely no idea what to do. Like he wasn’t even a drummer, just like an accountant they found on the street.
He’s placing memory markers throughout the song, counting bars, marking the solos, vibe changes, buildups... Very interesting. Very smart. We should all be doing it for everyday task.
Francisco Roseta Vaz Monteiro Sure. In the video, when Larnell is about to start writing down notes on paper instead of making mental notes in his head, he says, “The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory.” What he means by that is, it’s important to take notes on paper and not just take mental notes. While the pencil you’re writing with might be very short, the words that you put down on paper will last as long as you keep the piece of paper. A person’s memory, on the other hand, doesn’t last forever no matter how good their memory is. Did that help? He’s talking about the words that a pencil can write on paper; even a short pencil. I really like the meaning. He’s saying how important it is to write stuff down when preparing to play a new song. If you write it down you won’t forget. I hope that helped. If not let me know and I’ll try again.
I have been playing drums for like 10 years, but I can't even do 1% of what he just did. It's like we are playing a totally different instrument... The dude is awesome.
I’ve been playing for about 10 years now and can’t do that either. I even took a short break from playing the drums and started picking up guitar, but now I’m rusty again and struggling to play certain songs I like.
He is a pro. Not simply a person that does it for pay, but highly proficient in his craft. I am impressed. Natural talent plus training plus experience.
I’m with you subvet67, and I notice your username and my ex is a sub vet, 9 years subs, 11 sub-related or DOD after he didn’t achieve promotion. Many good, bad, and indifferent memories. Wouldn’t trade it but at the same time only because I see the end blessings God has brought through holding onto Christ, especially with endurance and patience and humility and sacrificial love, even if my ex never seemed to possess those qualities, or even if others think I don’t. God is faithful in all things and at all times, even when people aren’t, even when the “evidence” of this world and the fools in it seems to show otherwise. God bless and God speed.
Ashton Lyons - you’re both right because thousands of hours of practice still doesn’t necessarily result in that level of talent. He has definitely practiced forever as you suggested but he also has an extremely high level of talent. A good example is I could practice all of the same basketball drills as Lebron James but my lack of talent would never result in my playing like him. Even if I practiced three times as long as he does.
Dude....you ain't never lied. The one thing about music and talent is it is truly color blind. Sticks, strings, keyboards, horns, footpedals don't have a clue what u look like. I wish the whole world could mimic an instrument.....what a planet we could be🙂🙂🙂
Snarky Puppy recorded their album "We Like It Here" with an audience wearing headphones inside the studio. Their regular drummer, Robert "Sput" Searight, forgot to renew his passport and didn't realize it until he got to the airport and wasn't allowed onto the flight. They called Larnell at the last minute, and he learned the entire album ON THE PLANE from Toronto to Amsterdam! He arrived at 7:00 AM, went straight to the studio to setup his drums, had a rehearsal with the band that afternoon, and played two shows that evening. They ended up doing three more nights in a row of two shows every evening and he absolutely KILLED IT, so I'm not surprised that he was able to do this with such ease! Check out the album if you haven't. It's great!

@@imblackie9772 he doesn't even play a pitch based instrument lol. what I was getting at, though, was that his talent is a product of massive dedication and commitment to the craft and not a freebie from the Lord
From me, someone who loves listening to great music, and who has only an elementary knowledge of music, watching this man analyze this piece and go to it doing what he does is CRAZY!!!!!!!! Unbelievable
@@justinslogar5770 bruh, I'm a drummer. I've been pounding sticks for over 20 years. I give respect where its due. I have a bachelors in music from the UofA and I teach bass guitar lessons. And yes, there's a difference between a drummer and someone who's a full on musician. Somebody can play half ass a couple songs and say they're a drummer. A musician is someone who studies the music, listens to the beat pattern, listens to scales, breaks it down (music comprehension) listening to a song once and playing it perfectly is a musician. Rewinding a dozen times trying to play it, that's just a dime store drummer.
I learned to do this playing karaoke night at Chez Wayne. Guys would come up and hum songs I'd never heard before and, shortly after, the band would be accompanying them for their mo in the spotlight. When where you sleep and if you eat is dependent on it, you get good at it real fast. Thx and a big "up" to Wayne.
tubby town I worked ina studio in Nashville. The studio musicians they would bring in for a session would just blow me away. They would sit down and listen to the artist play his song the. They would go and track it first tome and it sounded like they had been playing together forever. Truly amazing talent.
Had d opportunity and privilege of meet Larnell while I was volunteer aid-d-camp for Snarky Puppy in Jazz Plaza Festival in Cuba, well the best drummer performance I have watched, listened and enjoyed was his part during the closing session of Festival, no words describe that moment, all the theater standing, just out of this world, and he is not just a pro artist he is also so humble and nice person like all the other great artists from Snarky including Michael League, examples of greatness and talent!!!
We all humans can do this, but you bad habits, Incorrect life style and depression that this 2000s era gives to people makes most of humans practically useless.
I can do this when I'm playing saxophone. I love playing with someone who's playing the keys. I don't know music theory but I just developed an ear for improvisational notes, chords, melodies.
He played it once after listening to it a few times. Which is AMAZING. Practicing mentally without having to use your instrument and then killing it when its showtime. Those type of musicians are valuable 👍🏾
@@julianjohnsen6956 Oh for sure....that's awesome that you can play like this because that's a gift from God. I also love jazz and I was first chair alto sax in All Star and Jazz Lab. I can agree....I never heard someone play out a drum set sooo efficiently to the sound of the other instrument like he does..like his whole sound of the drums was perfect for the other instruments......that was really awesome....

Yes I mean even if you are musically inclined most people would not be able to pull everything he did from this! Amazing I will share this with everyone
He’s lifted heaps of kilos too
Ugh, don't put ad breaks in the middle of the song. That's just wrong.
ads on youtube? wow must've been 10 years ago for me, get an adblocker lol
John Doe u can’t on a phone
Use youtubevanced.
@@jonsan8626 was about to comment the same thing
Jon San whats TH-camvanced?
The brother's skill and sensitivity are incredible. I would like to have this "gift of God" like him. Congratulations my brother Larnell, my eyes are filled with emotion to hear such a wonderful performance. Very beautiful to see and hear.
My sentiments exactly
that ain't a "gift", dudes.
E3
mackhomie6 actually it is a very small percent of people have perfect pitch even with training you still wouldn’t be as good as larnell he is on a different level everyone has a gift but there not the same
@@imblackie9772 he doesn't even play a pitch based instrument lol. what I was getting at, though, was that his talent is a product of massive dedication and commitment to the craft and not a freebie from the Lord
From me, someone who loves listening to great music, and who has only an elementary knowledge of music, watching this man analyze this piece and go to it doing what he does is CRAZY!!!!!!!! Unbelievable
This guy isn't a drummer, he's a true musician.
So.... Are you telling me what I think you're telling me?
Idiot. So drummers can not get a Bachelor in Music?
@@LeonydaCruz and what is it that you "think" I'm saying?
Just Me well your first comment implies that you don’t think of drummers or at least most drummers as real musicians
I’m a simple man, I see raw talent and I smash that like button. I tip my hat to you sir.
A had a friend that played guitar that was like this. What ever song we wanted to jam to he would listen to the song once then play it like wrote it.
Its like a second language. Thats not a joke
Where is this friend?!
Tengiz Dzhishkariani sadly he passed away in 2009. Died in his sleep.
"The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory"
- Larnell Lewis
That part was gold. It showed HOW he has developed the memory he has. Love that.
Had to replay to catch that quote, if he has a quote for writing shit down you know it’s something he’s been working on for awhile
@@christophergonzalez3152 Indeed
He was quoting it himself, its a famous quote, a proverb almost.
The music is in his heart and soul. Insane man.
So this is what Draymond Green does in his spare time.
Thats fuckin hilarious lmao
😂😂😂😂
You will have thousands of likes in a few days😂
Lmfaooo
hahahahahaha
Everybody hears a song differently the fist time. This guy is obviously a master of his instrument.
Simply.... amazing. That dude has talent, and skill beyond anything I've ever seen to be able to do that after only listening once.
That's insane how quick he did that and how perfect it was for the song.
Regardless if he listened to it once or twice this is still impressive. I forgot what i ate for breakfast yesterday 🤷🏾♂️
We all humans can do this, but you bad habits, Incorrect life style and depression that this 2000s era gives to people makes most of humans practically useless.
Aaron Hunt so true even if he heard it 10 times.. then played it perfect . That’s real talent
M CHRIS what are you talking about
@@2close4missiles88 not everyone understand, thats actually a point of my comment.
@@mchris5054 There are more skilled people than ever though
I absolutely loved this! I haven't been on a set in decades and this just warms my heart.
God-given talent plus hard work plus training = BOSS.
I can do this when I'm playing saxophone. I love playing with someone who's playing the keys. I don't know music theory but I just developed an ear for improvisational notes, chords, melodies.
That's amazing
That's so cool! Do you come from a family of musicians?
“The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory” Best quote ever
That man is beyond believing.
Super talented 👏
Without music the world would be so wack
@C.B Turncoat pretty much 🤣🤣🤣🤣 cus my gawd the unseasonedness would be global
Drummers would be unemployable, that's for sure.
Ohh this world is still wack! Just a lil less with good music!
@@trooperdee1970 i actually agree with u
The universe couldn't exist without music.
I imagine this dude when someone says "I'm professional musician"
How about drake with a ghostwriter?
Exactly
His drum take, seemed like it was originally part of the song.
I'm not sure I've ever been more impressed and amazed. Righteous...
He listened to it way more than once...still amazing.
He makes it look so easy, like, just no effort required. It just flows like a river.
He played it once after listening to it a few times. Which is AMAZING. Practicing mentally without having to use your instrument and then killing it when its showtime. Those type of musicians are valuable 👍🏾
This is absolutely phenomenal!!! Dude is a genius with sticks! New fan!
This MAN is anointed. What a wonderful experience. I’m not even a drummer however I have a brand new reverence for them!!!!
I can barely play the radio without getting static. Don't know why TH-cam recommended it but I'm not disappointed. I can truly appreciate this.
I see how he learnt the Snarky Puppy songs so quickly now. My favourite drummer Larnell is the truth 💯
I know it may be said all the time....but out of every genre of music, I must say he is by far the best drummer I've ever heard.
agreed.
@@julianjohnsen6956I'm going to have to check out more vids by this awesome guy.....he could play any genre of music probably at the drop of a dime.
@@julianjohnsen6956 Oh for sure....that's awesome that you can play like this because that's a gift from God. I also love jazz and I was first chair alto sax in All Star and Jazz Lab. I absolutely love Gospel....one of thee' finest groups to me is
The Mississippi Mass Choir.
I am also German, born in America tho👉💯
I can agree....I never heard someone play out a drum set sooo efficiently to the sound of the other instrument like he does..like his whole sound of the drums was perfect for the other instruments......that was really awesome....
@@rashardlafayette399 Very well stated my bro....Keep up fam
That by far was one of the hardest songs to play after Because of all the drops .. he killed it
