You have conveyed to me through your videos with Irish whistles and songs the pleasure or even the "sickness" of playing the whistle and buying and having a collection! Through you, I rediscovered my childhood pleasure of playing the flute! I haven't played the flute since I was 10 years old, now I'm 41 years old. Perfect video for trying to figure out what to get next. Definitely a lower whistle, most likely a Chris Wall. Those sound the best to me. Really appreciated the lack of post processing on the sound. 4 Years later and this is still super helpful! As a complete beginner, I don't want to get anything too fancy just yet. The Clarke Sweetones actually sound really nice for so cheap. I think I'll pick them up in D and C to test the waters for now. That said though, all the Chris Wall Celtics really stand out to me. The deeper, mellower tone sounds so nice. I'll definitely be looking towards some of these in the future if I take to the instrument well! Thanks for the excellent comparison, what a nice collection you have!
Dear CutiePie, I also have a huge collection of whistles(almost a hundred) and I’ve been playing whistles for almost half a century. I developed a way/ method to avoid squeaking. Cut a little piece of drink plastic straw, insert a full one, or half or less than half into the wind hole mouthpiece and you’ll see the result. Your lessons are really great! I wish I had listened to them 50 years ago, but even now I’m learning from you. Thanks for you work and keep it up!
Thank you for the video. The favorite of my collection is an Oak in C. I make Native American style Flutes as a hobby, and that got me into whistles. I made a fipple flute in Bb, to play along with a Bagpiper friend of mine. The second octave is a little squirrelly, but I never really needed it! The thing about whistle collecting is you can scratch that itch without breaking the bank. Have a wonderful week!

People in the middle ages and antiquity played with homemade instruments, modern manufacturing tech is much better than what people back then had. It's only your impression that the expensive one is better

Just a tip I've found helpful to help with clogging: Colin Goldie suggested using regular (smooth) toothpaste on the fipple windway. I've carefully cut a piece of plastic (e.g. old credit card), rubbed some paste on it, and gently rubbed the wind-way. Then wash out with warm water. Previously had tried food-industry silicone spray - but this actually makes it worse! Also, for those with WAS, the Killarney Whistle (high D nickel) I have is utterly amazing. So responsive and clear in both octaves. It really helps me brush up my ornamentation techniques!
Killarney whistle definitely has THE best price/value ratio out there. It is sweet, in tune, doesn't clog, you can hit 3rd octave D and E without much trouble. You can record with it without any trouble. Only "flaw" is it's not a session whistle, but it is so perfectly crafted in all other aspects that you wouldn't touch any other for home practice or even recording.
Clarke original D does need a lot of air, especially getting to the second octave. And I thought it was just me playing tin whistle for the first time and not being able to play well yet! Thanks for clarifying. I should have watched this review first! Keep up the great videos 👍

I went to a used music store and asked for a pennywhistle. They pulled out an old cardboard box of whistles and I grabbed a Clark Original in a beat up package for $16. This is my first whistle and I’m looking forward to learning to play. :3
In Mexico, all us in middle school ( secondary school) must take a music class, and yes along with it learn to play "the flute" along with the (Do Re Mi Fa Sol La ti Do). Yet, the flute it is a plastic made, and yamaha brand...Great Clip!!! Gracias

So so many choices of whistles available! Thank goodness for reviews like this. There’s a home here for any whistles you don’t want 😆 seriously there is, I once completely emptied a skip full of broken guitars and repaired them for friends kids to use. I lost sleep knowing all them guitars were just waiting to be dumped!
I also suffer from W.A.S. (Whistle acquisition syndrome) I have about 25 at the last count. If you could find a Generation whistle made before 1983 I think that may change your mind about them.You can tell the old ones by a line that runs up the mouthpiece. I got a couple from ebay last year after months of searching. One of them is the most tarnished beaten up old thing you ever saw and only cost me £1. It is fantastic, I have a Killarney, a few Dixon whistles and a Chris Wall in my collection, but that old "Genny" has become my favourite. By the way if you remove the mouthpiece from a new Generation whistle and fill up the hollow section under the windway with blue-tack that does often improve them quite a bit and make the second octave a little bit sweeter. When we see old footage of players in the 60's and 70's they almost always had Generation whistles and I think sounded great.
@@CutiepieTinWhistle Go for it, hopefully you'll see a difference. A quick tip, if you put some water from the kettle in a mug and let it cool for a few minutes then dunk the mouthpiece in for about three minutes that should melt the glue a bit so the mouthpiece comes off without too much trouble. If it's boiling the mouthpiece may crack. If you go for it, a before and after would be a great post.
CutiePie Yes this is an old trick with Generations. I have done exactly the same thing with my B flat Generation and the sound certainly seems to have improved noticeably. There is now no more instability in the second octave. Just needs no more than five seconds or so in very hot but not boiling water (you should be able to put your fingers in the water). Then twist head to remove. You may need to repeat the dipping once more to get the glue loose enough. Use a thin pen to ram the blue tack down the tip under the wind way as firm as possible taking care not to damage the delicate blade. The line of blue tack should be smooth, firm and level with the start of the hole in the head. You may then wish to adjust the head in or out a bit according to your preference for tuning pitch. Have fun!
Beautiful! Some amazing playing! Only thing, when playing high d in the second octave on the d whistles, why don’t you take your to finger off? It gives you a much crisper sound, rather than the textured voice. As a whistle player, I love what you are doing, and love your videos! Keep it up!

Instead of being a crazy cat lady, you are going to be the Crazy Whistle Lady! ~ :^) You definitely have me sold on Chris Wall's whistles. My boyfriend has said he will buy me one for my birthday, (which is not till September :( . ) But Chris Wall's whistles are roughly about an 8 week wait at the moment anyway. (I'll try sweet talking him into getting me one sooner!) ~ :^)
You are absolutly right about the warming and the cool down on the MK pro, i've recieved mine the past week and at first I thought that it had some issue, maybe some manufacturing error or something like that, because the sound gets softer and softer and with a bit of noise after a while, and that occurs a lot faster than in my chieftain v3 or my dixon, but as you have pointed up, it seems a common "issue" in the MKs, so you have to warming it up a LOT at first, and clean the mouth with a strong blow, covergin the mouth hole, with frequenci, and even so it can clog anyway. Besides that, it has indeed a strong and clear tone, and my favorite part: it has a sound between a low whistle and an irish flute (the side blow ones), and that makes the MK unique and different of any other lows out there.

Nice comparison of whistles. I have been playing whistles for about 24 years since I was 8 and have a few now. I stopped playing for a while as I started playing saxophones 2 years ago, and going back to playing whistles again, it hit me instantly the lack of resistance compared to playing a saxophone which has a lot more. I have all the Generation whistles in brass and nickel and never really like them, squeaky so don't like the sound except for the Bb which I like more. I have two Chieftain whistles an old non tunable Chieftain high C V3 and I find the high notes don't come out unless I push harder which makes the notes loud and I sometimes get low notes instead but the fipple area has started to show signs of corrosion on it, and I have a non tunable Chieftain low D V3 which I don't mind, except the bigger holes on it due to having slightly short fingers. I have two Tony Dixon whistle/flutes in plastic a low G and a high C with interchangeable heads. When I have the flute head on both I find I can't get rid of a breathy sound especially on the high C which I can't get a good sound on but the whistles heads are good. Another I have is a Susato high A tuneable and it's a nice sweet tone and I have tried its head on the Dixon low G flute/whistle body and find it sounds nice, but I really have to control my air and play softly with that combination or it just squeaks or squeaks out high notes and I don't think it is in the key of G anymore. I do want to get a few more and thought about a low Bb or bass G if I could find one but the are very big and I am thinking of maybe getting a Jerry Freeman tweaked Generation whistle which might be better than the standard Generations. I do want a low Eb though. If there was any I could get, it would be one made by Pat O'Riordan as he redesigned the mouthpiece fipple so his have a nice tone through 2 octaves but they are very hard to find and any I have seen were very expensive since he stopped making whistles and then died last year.
Thanks for the reviews. Similarly I got a few high Ds as well, but mysteriously I favor Clarke Sweetone the best even though it could be the cheapest among all... My chieftain A and low F are on the way, the video just makes me feel so satisfied of choosing this brand. If I can get back to China in the summer I would probably consider bringing you one or two privately made and sold whistles from Chinese craftsmen. If such chance permits, I will drop a message for you to decide what tone would be preferred.
Greetings from Ireland, I find it probably an advantage living in Ireland to find out which are the best whistles. They are not always the most expensive brands. You want consistantly good whistles throughout the range of keys. I believe there are 15 different keys one can get. At the start I had the Generation whistles. And the only one I like is the first oneI bought, the high C nickle, though at the 2nd octive not great. I quickly realised I need good whistle to be able to play with other instruments and be in key Oh, I did want to mention my old 34 year old original Clark still works but, isn'tload enough and I get out of breath. I have a Clark Sweet tone that is clear & sounds pretty but, from day one completely out of tune. So I can only play it alone. And strangly I found the Generation high F and high Eb to be quite nice. But for consistent good professional whistles I go to the tin whistle and flute maker Tony Dixon. I have an Alto brass A that is nice, and the others I go for are the tuneable aluminium whistles. I just ordered a high D. I wanted the best high D that is clear in 1st and 2nd octives. The next BEST high D is " Wild Irish Whistle" a little pricey, but it's sound and action is so perfect. In fact all his whistles sound beautiful. I will put up demonstearmtion of a few of them. You may want to check them out. McNeela Irish instruments makes them. . But I find "Tony Dixon" range of whistles wonderful and what I can afford.. The polymer ones are mellow and clear too. I have a lovely aluminium low G. Sounds awesome. There is a inexpensive high quality high D you can get that is still great quality and sound clear and bright throughout, that is a Tony Dixon DXTRND tuneable nickel copper whistle. Clear as a bell. A great whistle for the price. And you can get it through the Irish music instrument maker of the "Wild Irish Whistles" and seller of many Irish instruments and had his own line of very fine fine flutes and violins", It is nice that thoughhe has his own line, he sell all the To y Dixon whistles and flutes as well as other very fine whistle makes. The melody from the song called "down by the Salley gardens" was used in one of the Norwegian artist Kurt nilsen's songs called "gje Meg handa Di venn" even tho you probably won't understand what he sings about I recommend it (I'm Norwegian and at least in my eyes that's a "Christmas" song 😅

Aho Stephanie, I was glad to see your post today. I noticed that you took last Friday off from doing a video. I hope you were able to get some quality R & R. Everyone needs some down time once in awhile to recharge you know. My wife and I are planning some recharging time in the near future. There's this little vacation spot we get away to every so often. One of the shops I like to frequent when we're there sells dulcimers. They are also a dealer for a Native American style flute company and they also sell whistles. I bought my Clark traditional D there. I've also purchased a few N.A.F.'s there. As far as whistles go I'm not really satisfied with my Clark traditional. Last time we were there they had some Clark sweet tones also Fedogs and I think the other brand I saw was Walton. I will be buying a sweet tone from one of the three companies as my Clark's holes are too small and too close together and the darn thing is way too breathy. Do you know anything about the Walton whistles? I'll be rewatching this video several more times as reference for my decision. The information you present here will help alot. Thank you Stephanie. I don't know a lot about Walton whistles and have never tried one, but they have good reviews from what I've heard :) I imagine they're similar to a Feadog...

Wow -that mustve felt like a marathon! Very helpful video as ever. A while back you suggested a CW lowF for me- and you were so right!! Wonderful joy to play - even allows really gentle second octave notes! Unfortunately I did weaken waiting for it to come though and indulged in an MKPro - thus far probably a big mistake ( really lovely tone to it but clogs up like mad- contrary to many claims- perhaps as one has to virtually spit into it to get it into the second octave!!) But the Chris Wall whistle is an absolute joy to play- think I might have to have a CW lowD now!!
The Sweetones hold up surprisingly well in the mix, and so does the Chris Wall Celtic. I have the Dixon Pro, but I don't like it as much as the now-discontined original brass Trad. There's a slight scratchiness in the 2nd octave that I hear on yours as well. The Chris Wall Sweetbrass is the nicest, in my opinion. But when you sell off some of those other whistles you'll need to try a Killarney high D and see what you think.
This is a great video. I'm wanting something a step up from the Generation/Feadog type. Can I suggest though, D in the middle register sounds clearer with your top finger off. It's a Boehm flute fingering but works on whistle too. It cuts out the low harmonic that can make that D hard to get clear. Also great for tunes with big jumps, because that upper D pops out effortlessly.
Over and over and again, and finally this video confirms that I love how Chris Wall's whistles sound!! So far all of his whistles's sound is appealing but there is a waitlist uuurrrggghhh!!! I really want to buy his sweetbrass or celtic high D but seeing as I need to wait 6months, as a beginner what whistle would you recommend? Clark's Sweetone seemed nice here but I was told that Dixon's Trad was a good afforable choice for beginners as well. What's your opinion on Dixon's Trad? Btw do you think there's a different between Dixon'a Trad and DX004?

Very nice demo! Chis wall d all around best. I had a two pice walnut whistle in D that looked like a recorder but configured ax a 6 hole. Sweet mellow sound on lower and upper registers. Got from big store in Michigan ( online too, Eldsrly is name). Sadly in one of many house moves the bottom is lost. Tryed fitting it to various whistle, no luck. But suggest you try a carpenter or woodworker to make one using tin whistle as guide. Just smile and melt his heart. Like your fine vids and playing. I notice the chanter on your sofa, assume you are a piper too.
I got me the normal 10euro clark sweettones whistles and learned some melodies on that one. But something was 'missing' last week bought me a Susato for 70euro and i have to admit, my playing has gotten a lot better. ;) So for beginner fluteplayers, i highly recommand this flute. You have to blow , you CAN blow harder on it, its really loud ( i come from recorder playing so i intend to blow somewhat harder) and with a Susato you really do have to blow hard to get the high notes. they are a little less sensitive. I find him great to progress further with !! A lot better sound then with those sweettones!! and a decent price for if you dont play professionlly. xxx love it
ps i also got a Clark wooden whistle (so with wooden mouth) but that one was terrible as it never seemed to be able to make up which was a high note and which a low note. I see you play on it a lot, though its not my fav. cost me around 30euro and the same day i bought it i resold it again because i just couldnt get my mouth around it. LOL. for me a hideous flute. the form of the mouth of the Susato is really really nice. and the thumbholder a plus. fast easy pick up and play, no need to warm up.

Perfect video for trying to figure out what to get next. Definitely a lower whistle, most likely a Chris Wall. Those sound the best to me. Really appreciated the lack of post processing on the sound. Hearing their true sound made a world of difference.

As a complete beginner, I don't want to get anything too fancy just yet. The Clarke Sweetones actually sound really nice for so cheap. I think I'll pick them up in D and C to test the waters for now. That said though, all the Chris Wall Celtics really stand out to me. The deeper, mellower tone sounds so nice. I'll definitely be looking towards some of these in the future if I take to the instrument well!

Dear CutiePie, I also have a huge collection of whistles(almost a hundred) and I’ve been playing whistles for almost half a century. I developed a way/ method to avoid squeaking. Cut a little piece of drink plastic straw, insert a full one, or half or less than half into the wind hole mouthpiece and you’ll see the result. Your lessons are really great! I wish I had listened to them 50 years ago, but even now I’m learning from you. Thanks for you work and keep it up!
Thank you for the video. The favorite of my collection is an Oak in C. I make Native American style Flutes as a hobby, and that got me into whistles. I made a fipple flute in Bb, to play along with a Bagpiper friend of mine. The second octave is a little squirrelly, but I never really needed it!
The thing about whistle collecting is you can scratch that itch without breaking the bank.

Just a tip I've found helpful to help with clogging: Colin Goldie suggested using regular (smooth) toothpaste on the fipple windway. I've carefully cut a piece of plastic (e.g. old credit card), rubbed some paste on it, and gently rubbed the wind-way. Then wash out with warm water. Previously had tried food-industry silicone spray - but this actually makes it worse!
Also, for those with WAS, the Killarney Whistle (high D nickel) I have is utterly amazing. So responsive and clear in both octaves. It really helps me brush up my ornamentation techniques!
Killarney whistle definitely has THE best price/value ratio out there.
It is sweet, in tune, doesn't clog, you can hit 3rd octave D and E without much trouble.
You can record with it without any trouble.
Only "flaw" is it's not a session whistle, but it is so perfectly crafted in all other aspects that you wouldn't touch any other for home practice or even recording.
Update. My Chris Wall arrived. It's an excellent whistle!
Clarke original D does need a lot of air, especially getting to the second octave.

I went to a used music store and asked for a pennywhistle. They pulled out an old cardboard box of whistles and I grabbed a Clark Original in a beat up package for $16. This is my first whistle and I’m looking forward to learning to play. :3

There’s a home here for any whistles you don’t want 😆 seriously there is, I once completely emptied a skip full of broken guitars and repaired them for friends kids to use. I lost sleep knowing all them guitars were just waiting to be dumped!

I also suffer from W.A.S. (Whistle acquisition syndrome) I have about 25 at the last count. If you could find a Generation whistle made before 1983 I think that may change your mind about them.You can tell the old ones by a line that runs up the mouthpiece. I got a couple from ebay last year after months of searching. One of them is the most tarnished beaten up old thing you ever saw and only cost me £1. It is fantastic, I have a Killarney, a few Dixon whistles and a Chris Wall in my collection, but that old "Genny" has become my favourite. By the way if you remove the mouthpiece from a new Generation whistle and fill up the hollow section under the windway with blue-tack that does often improve them quite a bit and make the second octave a little bit sweeter. When we see old footage of players in the 60's and 70's they almost always had Generation whistles and I think sounded great.
I'm planning to 'tweak' one and see what happens 😎
@@CutiepieTinWhistle Go for it, hopefully you'll see a difference. A quick tip, if you put some water from the kettle in a mug and let it cool for a few minutes then dunk the mouthpiece in for about three minutes that should melt the glue a bit so the mouthpiece comes off without too much trouble. If it's boiling the mouthpiece may crack. If you go for it, a before and after would be a great post.

CutiePie Yes this is an old trick with Generations. I have done exactly the same thing with my B flat Generation and the sound certainly seems to have improved noticeably. There is now no more instability in the second octave. Just needs no more than five seconds or so in very hot but not boiling water (you should be able to put your fingers in the water). Then twist head to remove. You may need to repeat the dipping once more to get the glue loose enough. Use a thin pen to ram the blue tack down the tip under the wind way as firm as possible taking care not to damage the delicate blade. The line of blue tack should be smooth, firm and level with the start of the hole in the head. You may then wish to adjust the head in or out a bit according to your preference for tuning pitch.

You are absolutly right about the warming and the cool down on the MK pro, i've recieved mine the past week and at first I thought that it had some issue, maybe some manufacturing error or something like that, because the sound gets softer and softer and with a bit of noise after a while, and that occurs a lot faster than in my chieftain v3 or my dixon, but as you have pointed up, it seems a common "issue" in the MKs, so you have to warming it up a LOT at first, and clean the mouth with a strong blow, covergin the mouth hole, with frequenci, and even so it can clog anyway.
Besides that, it has indeed a strong and clear tone, and my favorite part: it has a sound between a low whistle and an irish flute (the side blow ones), and that makes the MK unique and different of any other lows out there.

Nice comparison of whistles. I have been playing whistles for about 24 years since I was 8 and have a few now. I stopped playing for a while as I started playing saxophones 2 years ago, and going back to playing whistles again, it hit me instantly the lack of resistance compared to playing a saxophone which has a lot more.
I have all the Generation whistles in brass and nickel and never really like them, squeaky so don't like the sound except for the Bb which I like more. I have two Chieftain whistles an old non tunable Chieftain high C V3 and I find the high notes don't come out unless I push harder which makes the notes loud and I sometimes get low notes instead but the fipple area has started to show signs of corrosion on it, and I have a non tunable Chieftain low D V3 which I don't mind, except the bigger holes on it due to having slightly short fingers.
I have two Tony Dixon whistle/flutes in plastic a low G and a high C with interchangeable heads. When I have the flute head on both I find I can't get rid of a breathy sound especially on the high C which I can't get a good sound on but the whistles heads are good. Another I have is a Susato high A tuneable and it's a nice sweet tone and I have tried its head on the Dixon low G flute/whistle body and find it sounds nice, but I really have to control my air and play softly with that combination or it just squeaks or squeaks out high notes and I don't think it is in the key of G anymore.
I do want to get a few more and thought about a low Bb or bass G if I could find one but the are very big and I am thinking of maybe getting a Jerry Freeman tweaked Generation whistle which might be better than the standard Generations. I do want a low Eb though. If there was any I could get, it would be one made by Pat O'Riordan as he redesigned the mouthpiece fipple so his have a nice tone through 2 octaves but they are very hard to find and any I have seen were very expensive since he stopped making whistles and then died last year.

Thanks for the reviews. Similarly I got a few high Ds as well, but mysteriously I favor Clarke Sweetone the best even though it could be the cheapest among all... My chieftain A and low F are on the way, the video just makes me feel so satisfied of choosing this brand. If I can get back to China in the summer I would probably consider bringing you one or two privately made and sold whistles from Chinese craftsmen. If such chance permits, I will drop a message for you to decide what tone would be preferred.

I find it probably an advantage living in Ireland to find out which are the best whistles. They are not always the most expensive brands. You want consistantly good whistles throughout the range of keys. I believe there are 15 different keys one can get. At the start I had the Generation whistles. And the only one I like is the first oneI bought, the high C nickle, though at the 2nd octive not great. I quickly realised I need good whistle to be able to play with other instruments and be in key Oh, I did want to mention my old 34 year old original Clark still works but, isn'tload enough and I get out of breath. I have a Clark Sweet tone that is clear & sounds pretty but, from day one completely out of tune. So I can only play it alone. And strangly I found the Generation high F and high Eb to be quite nice. But for consistent good professional whistles I go to the tin whistle and flute maker Tony Dixon. I have an Alto brass A that is nice, and the others I go for are the tuneable aluminium whistles. I just ordered a high D. I wanted the best high D that is clear in 1st and 2nd octives. The next BEST high D is " Wild Irish Whistle" a little pricey, but it's sound and action is so perfect. In fact all his whistles sound beautiful. I will put up demonstearmtion of a few of them. You may want to check them out. McNeela Irish instruments makes them. . But I find "Tony Dixon" range of whistles wonderful and what I can afford.. The polymer ones are mellow and clear too. I have a lovely aluminium low G. Sounds awesome. There is a inexpensive high quality high D you can get that is still great quality and sound clear and bright throughout, that is a Tony Dixon DXTRND tuneable nickel copper whistle. Clear as a bell. A great whistle for the price. And you can get it through the Irish music instrument maker of the "Wild Irish Whistles" and seller of many Irish instruments and had his own line of very fine fine flutes and violins", It is nice that thoughhe has his own line, he sell all the To y Dixon whistles and flutes as well as other very fine whistle makes. Aho Stephanie, I was glad to see your post today. I noticed that you took last Friday off from doing a video. I hope you were able to get some quality R & R. Everyone needs some down time once in awhile to recharge you know. My wife and I are planning some recharging time in the near future. There's this little vacation spot we get away to every so often. One of the shops I like to frequent when we're there sells dulcimers. They are also a dealer for a Native American style flute company and they also sell whistles. I bought my Clark traditional D there. I've also purchased a few N.A.F.'s there. As far as whistles go I'm not really satisfied with my Clark traditional. Last time we were there they had some Clark sweet tones also Fedogs and I think the other brand I saw was Walton. I will be buying a sweet tone from one of the three companies as my Clark's holes are too small and too close together and the darn thing is way too breathy. Do you know anything about the Walton whistles? I'll be rewatching this video several more times as reference for my decision. The information you present here will help alot. Thank you Stephanie. Wow -that mustve felt like a marathon! Very helpful video as ever. A while back you suggested a CW lowF for me- and you were so right!! Wonderful joy to play - even allows really gentle second octave notes! Unfortunately I did weaken waiting for it to come though and indulged in an MKPro - thus far probably a big mistake ( really lovely tone to it but clogs up like mad- contrary to many claims- perhaps as one has to virtually spit into it to get it into the second octave!!)
But the Chris Wall whistle is an absolute joy to play- think I might have to have a CW lowD now!!

CutiePie Oh it was here on TH-cam- well before Xmas last year! ( as you know it takes quite a while to get a CW whistle!) Well worth the wait though!
The Sweetones hold up surprisingly well in the mix, and so does the Chris Wall Celtic. I have the Dixon Pro, but I don't like it as much as the now-discontined original brass Trad. There's a slight scratchiness in the 2nd octave that I hear on yours as well. The Chris Wall Sweetbrass is the nicest, in my opinion. But when you sell off some of those other whistles you'll need to try a Killarney high D and see what you think.
I know, that's the plan! :D haha. My Dixon didn't used to squeak...until I dropped it :(

I bought a tin whistle to play old French Canadian tunes like La Bastringe. I like this video by the way.
This is a great video. I'm wanting something a step up from the Generation/Feadog type. Can I suggest though, D in the middle register sounds clearer with your top finger off. It's a Boehm flute fingering but works on whistle too. It cuts out the low harmonic that can make that D hard to get clear. Also great for tunes with big jumps, because that upper D pops out effortlessly.
Over and over and again, and finally this video confirms that I love how Chris Wall's whistles sound!! So far all of his whistles's sound is appealing but there is a waitlist uuurrrggghhh!!!
I really want to buy his sweetbrass or celtic high D but seeing as I need to wait 6months, as a beginner what whistle would you recommend? Clark's Sweetone seemed nice here but I was told that Dixon's Trad was a good afforable choice for beginners as well. What's your opinion on Dixon's Trad? Btw do you think there's a different between Dixon'a Trad and DX004?

Still can’t decide which one to buy for my first D whistle
Very nice demo! Chis wall d all around best. I had a two pice walnut whistle in D that looked like a recorder but configured ax a 6 hole. Sweet mellow sound on lower and upper registers. Got from big store in Michigan ( online too, Eldsrly is name). Sadly in one of many house moves the bottom is lost. Tryed fitting it to various whistle, no luck. But suggest you try a carpenter or woodworker to make one using tin whistle as guide. Just smile and melt his heart. Like your fine vids and playing. I notice the chanter on your sofa, assume you are a piper too.
My favorite is the Mellow Dog. $40 range. Jerry Freeman whistle.

I got me the normal 10euro clark sweettones whistles and learned some melodies on that one. But something was 'missing'
last week bought me a Susato for 70euro and i have to admit, my playing has gotten a lot better. ;) So for beginner fluteplayers, i highly recommand this flute. You have to blow , you CAN blow harder on it, its really loud ( i come from recorder playing so i intend to blow somewhat harder) and with a Susato you really do have to blow hard to get the high notes. they are a little less sensitive. I find him great to progress further with !! A lot better sound then with those sweettones!! and a decent price for if you dont play professionlly. xxx love it
ps i also got a Clark wooden whistle (so with wooden mouth) but that one was terrible as it never seemed to be able to make up which was a high note and which a low note. I see you play on it a lot, though its not my fav. cost me around 30euro and the same day i bought it i resold it again because i just couldnt get my mouth around it. LOL. for me a hideous flute. the form of the mouth of the Susato is really really nice. and the thumbholder a plus. fast easy pick up and play, no need to warm up.
